COAL MOUNTAIN - Mar-gie Maynor, 82, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Tamcliff Tabernacle. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Elmet G. McKinney
Elmet G. McKinney, 71, of Stotesbury, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, after an extended illness.
Born Aug. 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Kelly and Virgie McKinney.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served his country in the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of Gospel Tabernacle Church at Soak Creek and had been a resident of the Raleigh Center Nursing Home for nine months.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela; a brother, Shirley; and a sister, Doris.
He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Atha and husband, Steve, of Beckley and Sharon McKinney of Florida; a son, Kevin McKinney and wife, Anna, of North Carolina; four sisters, Garnet Mills of Bud, Hester Miller of Basin, Haley Bonds of Stotesbury and Joyce Lynch of Beckley; and two brothers, Russell McKinney of Amigo and Wibur McKinney of Corinne.
Also to mourn his passing are eight grandchildren, Cyndee, Jennifer, Jonathon, Misti, Emily, Jessica, Sabrina and Seth.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with the Rev. Terry Hatcher officiating.
will follow at Spruce Grove Cemetery, Basin.
Nephews Bob Cox, Eddie Mills, Tony McKinney, Tommy Cox, Rusty Cox and Burt Nelson will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends may gather 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ira Oakes
YPSILANTI, Mich. - Ira Oakes, 76, formerly of Ypsilanti, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at a local hospital.
Mr. Oakes was born July 14, 1927, in Michigan, the son of the late Charles Oakes and Fanny Elizabeth Oakes.
Mr. Oakes was retired from General Motors-Willow Run, Union No. 1776, of Ypsilanti.
Mr. Oakes was preceded in death by three sisters, Maudie Williams, Phyllis Calhoun and Berniece Daily; and a stepson-in-law, Jerry Toney.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Mildred "Jean" Oakes of Beckley; three stepchildren, Sharon Toney, Cheryl Williams and husband, Sammy, and Lyle "Kevin" Gardner, all of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Lila Bailey and husband, Otto, and Freda Presller, all of West Memphis, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Gardner of Detroit, Mich., and Lyle "Skid" Gardner, Samantha Williams, Rickie Toney and wife, Trena, Kristi White, Brien White and Krissy White, all of Christiansburg; five nieces; and nine nephews.
Service will be held in Michigan by Starks Funeral Services, Ypsilanti.

Dannie Lee Phlegar
RONCEVERTE - Dannie Lee Phlegar, 57, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, following injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born July 13, 1946, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Hunter and Wanda Mae Bowling Phlegar.
Mr. Phlegar had been a resident of Ronceverte for 34 years, formerly of Beckley, and was a member of Rhema Christian Center at Fairlea, where he was a faithful servant of the church and music department. He was employed by the West Virginia Department of Transportation as a weight enforcement officer. He was a former employee of First Citizen Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Joyce Phlegar; a daughter, Joann L. Phlegar and friend, Jason Whanger, of Waynesboro, Va.; four sons, William B. Phlegar and wife, Jamie, of Lewisburg, David D. Phlegar and wife, Gina, of Shady Spring, Aaron K. Phlegar and friend, Melinda Wilson, of Elyria, Ohio, and John A. Phlegar and wife, Alicia, of Eagle River, Alaska; a stepsister, Vicky Basham of Beckley; a stepbrother, Melvin Basham of Beckley; and six grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rhema Christian Center, Fairlea, with Pastor Stewart Farley and Pastor Lewis Moyer officiating. will follow in Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Organ Cave.

FAIRLEA - Betty Jean Steele, 64, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at her home in Fairlea.

Laura Elizabeth Biggs
RESTON, Va. - Laura Elizabeth Biggs, 68, of Reston, Va., formerly of Beckley, died on September 27, 2003 at Reston Hospital.
Born November 6, 1934 in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Edna Thomas Roston.
Laura was the beloved wife of the late Benjamin Biggs.
She was the loving mother of Shirl Bunzol of Arlington Heights, Ill, Gloria Forsythe of Manassas, Va., Sharon Betty of Herndon, Va., Vickie Biggs-Pewitte of Clarksville, Tenn., Michael Ramsey of Washington, D.C, and Stephen Biggs of Bassett, Va.; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett Street, Herndon, Va., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Loncoln Cemetery.

Annie V. Bragg
Annie V. Bragg, 97, of Daniels, formerly of Abraham, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at the Raleigh Center at Daniels following a short illness.
Born at Abraham on June 15, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Alice Plumley Adkins.
Mrs. Bragg was a homemaker, and was of the Pentecostal faith. She had lived the greater part of her life at Ab-raham, having made her home with her nephew, Lew-is Coey Adkins and wife Brenda at Shady Spring before entering the Ral-eigh Center at Daniels.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bragg; her son, Victor Bragg; four brothers, Burman, Basil, Voil, and Cecil; infant brother, Zina Adkins; and a sister, Ida Bragg.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Ilene Bragg; three grandchildren, Bobby Bragg and wife Linda, Juanita Bragg and husband Loren, and Randy Bragg and wife Lisa, all of Sheffield Lake, Ohio; seven great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Violet Radford of Daniels; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Jesse Adkins officiating. will follow at the Garten Cemetery at Bragg.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Nephews and great nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Myrtle E. Kessler Davis
ANDERSON, S.C. - Myrtle E. Kessler Davis, 89, of Anderson, S.C., formerly of Mt. Hope, died Friday, September 26, 2003 at the Ellenburg Nursing Center in Anderson, S.C. following a long illness.
Born May 4, 1914 at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late J.L. and Lollia Howell.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her first husband, Luray Kessler, Sr.; her second husband, Charlie Settles; and her third husband, Archie Davis.
She was a retired store manager for Kessler Market and was actively involved in church services, being a devoted member of the First Church of God at Mount Hope. Her life was an example to others.
Survivors include a son, Luray E. Kessler and wife Lois of Anderson, S.C.; a granddaughter, Terri Owens and husband Steve of Waterloo, S.C.; a grandson, Ray Kessler and wife Cheri of Mauldin, S.C.; grandsons, Danny Cook of Abbeville, S.C. and Tim Cook and wife Lisa of Anderson, S.C.; five great grandsons who were precious to her heart, Brandon, Chris, and Devin Kessler, Elijah and Aaron Cook; her siblings, Hazel Warden of Princeton, Gladys Kerstetter of Richmond, Va., Howard Howell of Colorado, Margaret Cook and Evelyn Wilbur, both of Manassas, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Ronnie Stapleton officiating. will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
Family members and church friends will serve as pallbearers.

Sedrick N. Holliday
SMOOT - Sedrick N. Holliday, 68, of Smoot, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2003 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea following a long illness.
Born February 17, 1935 at Smoot, he was a son of the late Wilson B. and Myrtle Holliday.
Mr. Holliday was a member of McClung Memorial United Methodist Church of Smoot, a retired coal miner of Island Creek Coal Company, a member of the U.M.W.A., a member of Rainelle Moose Lodge #1647, the Kanawha Valley Moose Legion #123, and a former member of the Smoot Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Ann Holliday; and three sisters, Lucille Martin, Anne Hundley, and June Guyer.
Survivors include his wife Cleo Lilly Holliday of Smoot; a daughter, Teresa L. Holliday Lively and husband Jack of Rainelle; two sons, James N. Holliday and wife Lisa of Smoot and William E. Holliday and wife Lois of Grassy Meadows; step-mother, Betty L. McClung of Rainelle; two brothers, Bernard W. Holliday and wife Sharlet of Lewisburg and Leonard C. Holliday and wife Charlotte of Smoot; four grandchildren, Ashley Lively, Katelynn Holliday, Emily Holliday, and Brandon Holliday; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Wallace and Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Pastor H. James Luchsinger officiating. will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Olive May Tillson Miller
FLAT TOP LAKE - Olive May Tillson Miller, 90, of Flat Top Lake, died Friday, September 26, 2003 at the Greystone Inn at Beaver following a long illness.
Born August 18, 1913 at Arlington, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Ward and Jane Olive Vessey Tillson.
Mrs. Miller was a graduate of the Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing in 1936, and received her post graduate studies at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, N.J. Mrs. Miller had served as president of the American Home Department of the Beckley Women's Club and also as president of the Raleigh County Medical Auxillary. She was treasurer of the Beckley Child Care Center for many years. She had also served as president of the Women's Society of Christian Service.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the United Methodist Temple since January 13, 1952, where she had taught Sunday school for several years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George A. Miller, whom she had married on June 7, 1940; a son, Lawrence Edward Miller; and two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include a son, Vincent W. Miller and wife Frances of Ghent, and their daughter, Jennifer Miller of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Carol J. Huffman of Beckley, and her children, John of Florence, S.C. and Deborah of Bowie, Md.; her sisters, Erna Harrell of Arlington, Va., Grace Richardson of Vienna, Va., and Elizabeth Alexander of Georgia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Temple with Rev. Dan Johnson and Rev. Sara Lamb officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum A.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.
Pallbearers will be Fred and Christopher Burroughs, Tom Ward, Fred Hill, Kelly Sponaugle, and Walter Winant.

LEXINGTON, Va. - James Patterson, 85, of Lexington, Va., formerly of Quinnimont, died August 17, 2003 in a Lexington health care center.

Donna Kay 'Katie' Vines
RADFORD, Va. - Donna Kay "Katie" Vines, 50, of Radford, Va., formerly of Beckley, died Sunday September 21, 2003 at her home.
Born September 30, 1952 at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Donald Eugene and Lyda Grace Lilly Vines.
Katie spent her childhood on Vine Street. She was a 1970 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a graduate of Concord College with a BA Degree in Psychology. A resident of Radford for the past 26 years, she was formerly affiliated with HCMF and was currently a computer programmer for EchoStar. She held a great love for animals.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Eugene Shannon of Charleston; her dearest lifelong friend, Patti Pientrantozzi Price and her family of Huntington; a special cousin, Ann Vines Basham of Cool Ridge; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In keeping with Katie's wishes, she will be cremated. Services will be private.

Christopher Shawn Wise
Christopher Shawn Wise, 5-year-old son of Timothy and Pheobe Minor Wise of Daniels, died Saturday, September 27, 2003 at his home following a long illness.
Christopher was born in Beckley on September 21, 1998.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Walter Wise; and maternal grandfather, James Minor.
Survivors include a brother, Michael Wise at home; paternal grandmother, Diana Dowell of Beaver; maternal grandmother, Shirley Minor of Beckley; paternal great grandparents, June Long of Massillon, Ohio and Glen Starcher of Barberton, Ohio; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley. will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Wilson Wood
Wilson Wood, 84, of Grandview Road in Daniels, died Friday, September 26, 2003, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born November 15, 1918 at Fireco in Raleigh County, he was the son of the late James Alexander and Arminta Hornsby Wood.
He served in the CCC camps in West Virginia and California. He was a retired miner, having worked for most of his career at the Slab Fork Coal Co., and was a 50-year member of the UMWA. He was of Protestant faith. He was a charter member of the Big Buck Hunting Club, was a former constable for the county during the 1950s, and was formerly elected to serve on the Raleigh County Democratic Executive Committee. An avid outdoorsman, the Wood family patriarch loved hunting and fishing, working in his garden and cooking for his family. And though he was called "Pops" by his children and "Papaw" by his grandchildren, he took great pride in his great-grandchildren: Austin, Amanda, Lacie, and Bretton Wood, all of whom referred to their great-grandfather as "Big Papaw."
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ursula Wood; four brothers, Franklin, Lewis, Bryan and Newton Wood; five sisters, Viola Hatcher, Ora Calloway, Opal Cooper, Dorothy Stump, and Rachel White; one sister-in-law, Nora Bowen.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Davis and husband John of White Oak; two sons, Frank Wood and wife JoAnn, and Danny and wife Karen Wood, all of Daniels; four grandchildren, Shaun and wife Erin, Eric and wife Amy, Adam and wife Angie, and Ryan Wood; one brother, Jim Wood of Beaver; one sister, Nancy Foster of Beckley; one sister-in-law, Nellie Moye of Beaver; one brother-in-law, Stephen Tolliver of Cool Ridge; four sisters-in-law, Minnie Sweeney, Lizzie Shively, Ruth Matherly and Ellen Lilly; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home at Shady Spring with the Elder Tommy Pack officiating. will follow at the Tom Lilly Cemetery at Flat Top.
Pallbearers will include grandsons, Shaun, Eric, Adam and Ryan Wood, and grandsons' friends, Sean Lilly, Chris Moore, David Burgess, Chris Genge and Tim Armentrout.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Beckley Area Foundation, for youth activities in the Shady Spring District, P.O. Box 5092, Beckley, WV 25802.

Ruth Ester Bragg
Ruth Ester Bragg, 92, of Springdale, passed away Sept. 20, 2003, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a long illness.
Born April 17, 1911, in Dry Branch, Campbell Creek, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Lucy Hudnall Mullens.
Mrs. Bragg was a member of the Church of Christ of Springdale and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Viven David Bragg of Springdale; daughters, Thelneda Clark of Elkview and Theda Jo Foreman of Ravenswood; sons, Sam Mason of Lewisburg and Howard B. Mason of Florida; sisters, Levirna Haywood of Gallagher and Zelma Stevens of Quinwood; and 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Service was Sept. 23 at the Wallace and Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with the Rev. Lewis Michaels officiating. followed at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Sarah Leotia Rucker Burwick
Sarah Leotia Rucker Burwick, 97, of Minden, died Sept. 15, 2003, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a short illness.
Born June 27, 1906, in Devon, Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late William Henry Rucker and Claudie Workman Rucker Browning. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Burwick; a son-in-law, Marlon Workman; brothers, Andrew and Frank Rucker; a sister, Dorsia Craft; and two infant brothers, Lloyd and Addia Rucker.
Mrs. Burwick was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Frankie Gaynell Workman, who was born at Rush Run and now resides at Gatewood; sister, Billie Jean Withrow of Weston; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was Sept. 17 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Bill Menefee officiating. followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Gary Davis
Gary Davis, 63, of Gnadenhutten, Ohio, died Sept. 18, 2003, following a brief but courageous battle with acute monocyclic leukemia.
Born May 6, 1940, in Kingston, he was a son of Virginia Estell Hyden Davis and the late William Dallas Davis.
Gary was raised in West Virginia, where he graduated from high school in 1959 from Collins High in Oak Hill. Gary worked in the tire test division of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron prior to a career-ending injury. Prior to working at Goodyear, he worked at the former Mechanical Mold & Machine, and Ace Machine Company of Cuyahoga Falls. He was a member of the Popular Rotorcraft Association, and the Local Chapter #1077 of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Gary was also a member of the National Rifle Association, and the American Bowling Congress. In fact, he was very proud to have bowled a 300 no tap game (nine strikes and three no-taps) in the Wednesday Bowling Gang on Jan. 15, 2003, at Alpa Lanes in Uhrichsville.
He loved talking and learning about aviation, from experimental aircraft to airports to air shows. He was a member of the Fence Pilot Association, a group of guys who got together in fellowship regularly at Harry Clever Field.
Gary was also a talented musician who enjoyed singing and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, the former Virginia Lee Owens Davis, whom he married June 26, 1960; sons, Keith A. Davis of Dover, and Bryan E. (Linda) Davis of Newcomerstown; a granddaughter, Emily Sue Davis; one step-grandson, Adam Glazer; brother, Glenn (Barbara) Davis; nieces, Wendy (Charles) Derr, and Heather (Matthew) Brown and nephew Aaron D. Davis, all of Gnadenhutten; brothers-in-law, James R. Owens and Troy R. (Sherry) Owens, all of Akron; and niece, Julie (Mike) King, and nephews, Dwayne (Vicki) Owens and Todd (Rora) Owens, Troy (Michelle) Owens, Thimothy (Jeannie) Owners, all of Akron.
Funeral service was Monday, Sept. 22 at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, Ohio, with Pastor Roger Bourne officiating. followed at Gnadenhutten-Clay-Union Cemetery in Gnadenhutten.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Edward B. 'Skip' Day
Edward B. "Skip" Day, 69, of Beckley and Ansted, died Sept. 16, 2003, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness.
Born Oct. 19, 1933, at Amigo, he was the son of the late Francis Alonzo and Cora M. Vipperman Day. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Regina Dobbs; and a brother, Willie Day.
Mr. Day was a former cabinet maker for Tidwell Mobile Home of North Carolina and a former U.S. Marine.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Rice Day of Rockwell, N.C.; son, Gerald Day and wife, Sarah, of Crab Orchard; sisters, Marcella Thornquest of Florida, Jo Dean Perry of Huntington and Loretta Shaddix and Rosemary Sloan, both of Ohio; brothers, Donald Day of Mullens, David Lee Day of Ohio, Jim Day of North Carolina and Doug Day of North Carolina; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
There was no service. At Mr. Day's request, his body was cremated.

Martha Drennen
Martha Drennen, 93, of Victor, passed away Sept. 15, 2003, at Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born May 31, 1910, in Beattyville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Ruben and Nannie Mays Newman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Dana Drennen, on May 28, 1972; two infant daughters; three infant sons; and a grandson, Dana Mitchell Skaggs, on Oct. 13, 1972.
Martha was a Sunday school teacher and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, Victor. She was a homemaker and was previously employed by Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Skaggs and her husband, Wallace, of Victor; grandchildren, Mark Edward Skaggs and Connie of Victor, and Darren Lee Skaggs of Victor; great-grandchildren, Shawn Mark Skaggs and Steven Edward Skaggs of Victor; and sisters, Mary Wooldridge of Ansted and Sylvia Waggoner of Lewisburg.
Service was Sept. 18 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with Pastors Don Walker and Stephen Fridenmaker officiating. followed in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lovers Leap Baptist Church, Hopewell Baptist Church or the Ansted Fire Department.

Juan A. Faria III
Juan A. Faria III, 47, of Ponce, Puerto Rico, formerly of Oak Hill, died Sept. 10, 2003, in Puerto Rico from the result of a truck accident.
Juan was the son of Carolyn A. Hill of Oak Hill and the late Juan A. Faria Jr. Besides his father, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Fernando C. Faria.
Mr. Faria was owner of a trucking company.
Juan was a graduate of Collins High School and attended Marshall University.
Other survivors besides his mother include his children, Carolyn Marie Faria, Juan Jose Faria and Patricia Nicole Faria, all of Ponce.
Service was Sunday, Sept. 14, in Ponce. followed in Coamo, Puerto Rico.
Donations of sympathy may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 250 Central Ave., Oak Hill, WV 25901.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Oak Hill.
