Elizabeth “Lily” Bouldin Higgins, 84, of Montgomery, WV, died in her sleep on December 8 at the Montgomery home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Connie Higgins, after a day spent with family members by her bedside, singing hymns she requested and holding her hands.
Lily was born to the late Agnes R. Lackey and William O. Bouldin on July 26, 1921, and lived at Keith, Burnwell and St. Albans, before moving to Winona and finally to Lookout, where she lived in the old Boone estate on Rt. 60 with her brother, sister and parents. She graduated from Nuttall High School where she was a cheerleader and drum major and where she met her husband, the late James F. Higgins, Sr., a band director in Fayette County for over 40 years. After a brief stint as an operator for C&P Telephone in Charleston, she married and began the prime career of her heart and life — being a homemaker for her husband and their seven children.
In addition to her indefatigable work as a homemaker, she generously offered her time and talents in countless church projects. As a Presbyterian, she sang in the choir, served as an Elder, and taught adult Sunday school and Circle; as a Catholic, she served as a lector and member of the evangelization committee, led a morning prayer group, and teamed with her husband in prison ministry; as a Charismatic, she led prayer groups for college students and adults in her home. At the end of her life, rather than being identified with one faith community, she saw herself as a Christian Charismatic with deep roots and ties to many congregations — especially the Presbyterian, Catholic and Episcopalian.
Lily was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband of 58 years, James F. Higgins, Sr., and by her brother, Bill Bouldin, Jr.
Those of her family who remain and are the legacy of her life are many: Daughters and spouses, Margaret and Ron Lindsey of Lookout, Agnes and Ivan Stafford of Alabama, Mary Jane and Larry Cole of Ansted; sons and spouses, James Jr. and Connie Higgins of Montgomery, Bill and Glenda Higgins of Washington, Tom and Vivian Higgins of Montgomery, and Rob and Barbara Higgins of Virginia; one sister, Agnes R.
