Carl L. Cutlip
Carl Lewis Cutlip, 60, of Brandywine, WV, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. Mr. Cutlip was born July 15, 1943 in Sutton, a son of the late William Henry Cutlip and Mary Jane Lewis Cutlip. He was employed at Roger Shifflett's Junkyard for eight years and was a line hang supervisor at Wampler's from 1975 to 1992. Surviving are his wife, Marcia McCord Cutlip; two daughters, Jeanette M. Miller of Franklin, WV, and Janet K. Bennett of Tioga; two sons, Carl 'Bucky' Cutlip of Franklin, WV, and Bobby Joe Cutlip of Goochland, VA; a sister, with whom he made his home with for the last two years, Virginia Pearl Kline of Brandywine; four brothers, Jack Cutlip and Bruce Cutlip, both of Franklin, WV, Ralph Cutlip of Goochland, VA, and Ira Cutlip of Cleveland, OH; nine grandchildren. A graveside service was conducted on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Exchange, with the Rev. Rob Burrel and Donnie Stout officiating.

Betty Jo (Skidmore) Kniceley
Betty Jo (Skidmore) Kniceley, of Nitro, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ, on Friday, November 28, 2003, after a long illness. She was 68 years old. Betty and her husband Kenneth have been residents of Nitro for the last 45 years. Born on January 20, 1935 in Bergoo, WV (Webster County), Betty was preceded in death by her parents Isaac R. Skidmore and Virgie M. (Grimm) Skidmore. She and her eight brothers and sisters lived near Caress, Braxton County. She was a 1953 graduate of Sutton High School. Betty and Kenneth K. Kniceley, also of Braxton County, were married July 22, 1954.They later moved to the Kanawha Valley where they raised three sons. As a resident of Nitro, Betty was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. In addition to owning a beauty salon, Betty was active in supporting many school and community organizations. After raising her three sons, at the age of forty-two she pursued a career in cosmetology by attending Capital City Beauty College, where she also served as an instructor for two years upon graduation. She owned and operated Kniceley's House of Beauty and Boutique for 14 years until her retirement in 1994. Betty Kniceley was a talented and creative lady who enjoyed; arts and crafts; sewing, painting, embroidery, cross-stitch, interior decorating, fashion design, and of course hair-styling. She served as a judge for Miss Teen World as well as hosted her own fashion shows. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth K. (of Nitro, WV); her sons, Steven K. (of Myrtle Beach, SC), Joseph K. and his wife Tamara (of Centerville, OH), and Andrew B. and his wife Tammy (of Fairmont, WV); her brothers, Theodore Skidmore (of Caress, WV), Robert Skidmore (of Millersville, MD) and Jim Skidmore (of Charleston, WV); her sisters, Helen Crane (of Mobile, Al), Lorine Morton (of Sutton, WV) and Karen Kniceley (of Nokesville, VA). Mrs. Kniceley was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Skidmore (of Silver Spring, MD) and one sister, Edith Helmick (of Willowick, OH). In addition, Betty was the beloved Grandmother of nine grandchildren: Todd Elliott, Jodi Marie, Christopher Scott, Katlyn Nicole, Zachary Adam, Joshua Kenneth, Alex Cameron, Kaci Renee and Samuel Cole. The Funeral Service was held at 11am at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church in Caress, WV on Monday, December 1, 2003. Services were officiated by Rev. Tom McDowell. Betty's final resting place will be in the Kniceley Cemetery in Corley, WV.

Anna Belle Cottrill
Anna Belle Cottrill, 55, of Hurricane, WV, died January 18, 2004 in Putnam General Hospital. She was born February 12, 1948. She was preceded in death by her mother Rhoda Barnett Lewis. She is survived by her father, Minter Cottrill and step mother Rosa Cottrill, both of Linn, WV; one sister, Goldie Holmes of Sand Fork, WV; two half-sisters, Betty Anderson of Glenville, and Neva Cottrill of Linn, WV; one step-sister, Jane Hickman of Burnsville, WV; one half-brother, Larry Cottrill of Glenville, WV; one step-brother, Buster Collins of Glenville, WV; and caregivers, Nancy and Jim Adams of Hurricane, WV. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, WV, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in the Scott Cemetery near Birch River, WV. Funeral arrangements are by Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, WV.

Guy Walter Collins
Guy Walter Collins, 68, of Burnsville, WV, died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at Tolers Fork, WV, after a sudden illness. He was born February 20, 1935, at Sand Fork, WV, a son of the late Oda and Eva Casto Collins. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Cecil and Clifford Collins, and sister, Nora Tomblin. For the last 20 years, he was the manager at the Burnsville Gulf Station and a Protestant by faith. Surviving: daughters, Janet, Karen and Robin; sons, Wayne, Brad and Jeff; sisters, Ruby Carson and husband Ray of Gilmer, WV, Ruth Tomblin and husband Monroe, and Betty Baker and husband Edgel, both of Pennsboro, WV; brothers, Lewis Collins of Heaters, WV, and Harold "Gabe" Collins and wife Mavis of Wheeling, WV; brother-in-law, George Tomblin of Stouts Mill, WV; extended family, Catherine Ratliff, Jack Ratliff, David and Cherry Ramsey, Brad and Caitlyn Moyers; extended grandchildren, April, Karl and Karlena Boyce, C.W., Casey and Lucas Ramsey, and Mary and Amy Ramsey, all of Burnsville, WV. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2004 at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, with Rev. Darrell Ramsey officiating. Burial followed in the John's Cemetery at Stout's Mill, WV.

Nancy Jane Johnson
Nancy Jane Johnson, age 56, of Flatwoods, perished in a house fire on January 21, 2004. She was a 1966 graduate of Sutton High School and an avid writer for the Braxton Citizens' News and Braxton Democrat for many years. Nancy was a member of the Stone Run United Methodist Church, Methodist Women, and loved to keep in contact with family and friends. She enjoyed going to the Senior Center and visiting with all the folks there; a friend to all, and the family historian. Her parents, Harry Howard and Mavis Eubank Johnson and her sister, Glenda Johnson, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Linda Brown and husband, Roy, of Flatwoods; niece Stephanie Brown Arden and husband Jeff of Flatwoods, and nephew, Eric Brown and wife Kendra of Weston. Also surviving is aunt Jane Eubank Prince and husband Red of Jane Lew; aunt Glenora Eubank of Ohio; great uncles Gaylord Eubank, Charles Eubank and wife Ruby of High Knob, and Paul Eubank and wife Clara Mae of Heaters, as well as numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held in late Spring.

Glenda Sue Johnson
Glenda Sue Johnson, 49, of Flatwoods, perished in a house fire on January 21, 2004. She was a 1972 graduate of Braxton County High School, graduate of Glenville State College, and earned her Masters Degree from West Virginia University. She was employed as a second grade teacher at Sutton Elementary School. She was a member of the Angus Cattle Association; she was Leader of the Stone Run Busy Beavers for many years and was a 4-H All-Star and attended Stone Run Methodist Church. Her parents, Harry Howard and Mavis Eubank Johnson and her sister, Nancy Johnson, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Linda Brown and husband, Roy, of Flatwoods; niece Stephanie Brown Arden and husband Jeff of Flatwoods, and nephew, Eric Brown and wife Kendra of Weston. Also surviving is aunt Jane Eubank Prince and husband Red of Jane Lew; aunt Glenora Eubank of Ohio; great uncles Gaylord Eubank, Charles Eubank and wife Ruby of High Knob, and Paul Eubank and wife Clara Mae of Heaters, as well as numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held in late Spring.

Cleva Mick Linger
Cleva Mick Linger, 92, of Palm Bay, Florida, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 in the Carnegie Gardens Nursing Center in Melbourne, FL. She was born December 19, 1911 at Burnsville, WV, a daughter of the late Albert B. Mick and Ida Hawkins Mick. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wirt Linger, and son, Richard Linger. Cleva graduated from Glenville State Teachers College in 1938 and taught in the West Virginia school system for 24 years. She moved to Florida in 1962 and taught there until she retired in 1977. She was an active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, Fidelis Iota Chapter for retired teachers for many years and an inactive member for the past five years. She was known for her witty personality. Even in difficult times, she could come up with something to make you laugh. She had many students through her long career, who always remembered her for her witty remarks. Cleva loved teaching and all her students remained special to her through the years. Surviving: son, Arron Linger of Palm Bay, FL; grandchildren, Tracy Russell of Sebastian, FL, Leslie Delisa and Megan and Amee Beth Linger; great grandchildren, Aaron Joseph, Dean Joseph, Carly and Dina Delisa, all of Palm Bay, Florida. Funeral service was held at 1 p.m., Monday, January 26, 2004, at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, with Rev. Eugene Bourgeau officiating. Burial followed in the Newville Cemetery.

Ronald Keith "Tony" Shuman
Ronald Keith "Tony" Shuman, 72, died January 21, 2004, following a long illness. Mr. Shuman was born July 2, 1931, in Hastings, Wetzel County. He graduated from Pine Grove High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After service, he attended Glenville State College, graduating in 1957. A retired teacher with experience in Canton, Ohio, Calhoun County and Braxton County, Shuman more recently served on the Braxton County Board of Education. During his early teaching career, Shuman was active as an organizer for the concerns of educators and served as chairperson of the West Virginia Education Association's Legislative Committee. During his teaching career, he served as freshman football coach and assistant wrestling coach at Braxton County High School. Shuman is survived by his wife, Shirley James Shuman of Gassaway; daughter, Mary Anne Backus of Frametown; and sons, Brian Mark Shuman of Ronceverte, WV, Christopher Ronald Shuman of Gassaway, Philip Allan Shuman of Gassaway, Thomas Keith Shuman of Gassaway, and Joel James Shuman of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren. Visitation was held at the Gassaway Baptist Church, Friday, January 23 from 6:30 til 9 p.m. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at the Gassaway Baptist Church on Saturday, January 24 with Rev. Allen Donaldson officiating. Burial followed in the James Family Cemetery at Frametown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tony Shuman Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Bank of Gassaway, P.O. Box 40, Gassaway, WV 26624. Richard M. Roach Funeral Home handled the arrangements for the Shuman Family.

Goldie Bea McTheny Brady
Goldie Bea McTheny Brady, 96, of Gassaway, died January 23, 2004 at Braxton County Memorial Hospital. She was born June 15, 1907, a daughter of the late Dow and Emma Hollinsworth McTheny. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church for many, many years. She married James Minter Brady in 1929, who preceded her in death in 1968. They had eight children, James J. Brady and wife Mildred of Little Birch, Vivian Martino of Hamburg, MI, Emma Bebout of Alliance, OH, Philip Brady and wife Becky of Alliance, OH, Lenore Duffield and husband Cam of Avon, OH, David D. Brady and wife Joyce of Rome, NY. Daughter Mary McDavid and son John Brady preceded her in death. Also surviving are sister, Freda Perrine of Gassaway; 25 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Eight brothers and sisters also preceded her in death. Service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 26 at the Sugar Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Joe Brown and Pastor Jeff Hanna officiating. Burial followed in the Sugar Creek Cemetery.

Ora May Linger Rogers
Ora May Linger Rogers, 82, went home to be with her Lord and family on Friday, January 23, 2004 at her home after a short illness. She was born August 18, 1921 at Newville, WV, a daughter of the late Augustus D. Linger and Ella Murphy Linger. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Edith, AuraJane, Mary and Amelia; brothers, French, Wirt, Harison, Claude, Leonard and Samuel. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Ora May was also preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Everett Lorraine Rogers on November 20, 1994. She was employed by the Braxton County Board of Education for 37 years as a teacher and administrator, life member of the WV All-Stars and National Educators Association, member of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi State for Educators, member of the Newville United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher, secretary and treasurer for many years, member of the Onward Homemakers, Past Matron of the now defunct Sutton Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star #144 and Past Noble Grand of Hillcrest Rebekah Lodge #12. Surviving: sisters-in-law, Kathern and Pearline Linger, both of Ohio; brothers in law, Lako, Lincoln and Lester Rogers, and a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the following caregivers: Jacob, Candi and Sydney Fairburn, Allen, Pauline and Doug Cogar, Joyce and Paul Hankins, David Fowler and Lena Fulks, as well as a host of many special friends. Funeral services were held Monday, January 26, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, with Rev. William E. Griffin and Rev. Eugene Bourgeau officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rogers-Bickel Mausoleum at Newville, WV, at the family's convenience.

Julia Hazel Ware Rhodes
Julia Hazel Ware Rhodes, 23, of Centralia, WV, died on January 19, 2004 from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was born October 12, 1980 in Marion, Ohio. Mrs. Rhodes attended the Centralia United Methodist Church and was a nurses aide at Braxton County Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by grandmother, Bulah Clutter, step grandfather, Charles Cutlip, grandfather, Oliver H. Melvin, and great grandmother Melissa Sandy. She is survived by her husband, Jason Paul Rhodes of Centralia, WV; daughter, Natalie Maris Rhodes, at home; parents George E. and Deloris E. Ware of Centralia, WV; brother Charles Patrick McCourt and wife Karen, and their daughter Patricia of Centralia, and grandmother, Amy B. Ware of Centralia, WV. Funeral services were held Friday, January 23, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, with Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Burial was in the Centralia Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, WV.

Joan Lassiter
Joan Lassiter, 68, formerly of Braxton County, passed away peacefully at home on February 16, 2004 in Canoga Park, California. She was born March 1, 1935 to the late Letcher S. Stonestreet and Anna Susan Carroll Stonestreet. She grew up and attended elementary school on Triplett, WV. She graduated from Gassaway High School in 1954 She was a Protestant by faith. She graduating from nursing school as an LPN, and practiced nursing at California State, North Ridge, California, until her retirement. Those left to cherish her memories were two daughters, Heather (Todd) Kindig of Simi Valley, California, and Lori (Dean) De Stefani of Fallbrook, California; four grandchildren, Kyle and Tayler Kindig, Brittney and Haley De Stafani; brother, Earl Stonestreet, Rootstown, Ohio; six sisters, Hazel Faust, Needles, California, Susie Kuhn of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Opal Smith of Gassaway, WV, Gladys Metz of Fairmont, WV, Glenda Lemon of Smithville, and Alma Boles of Ravenna, Ohio. She is also survived by a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Letcher S. Stonestreet and Anna Susan (Carroll) Stonestreet; two brothers, Russell Stonestreet, all of Gassaway, and Virgil Stonestreet of Auora, Nebraska. Services were held February 20, 2004 at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel in Chatsworth, California. Burial was in Chatsworth Cemetery, California.

Forest O. Hoard
Forest O. Hoard, 78, of Akron, OH, passed away March 24, 2004, after a courageous battle against cancer. Forest was born August 27, 1925 in Flatwoods, West Virginia, to the late Frank and Faye Hoard. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired long-distance truck driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Earl and Junior; sister, Janice; and sister-in-law, Carol. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Sandra Hoard; children, Karen (Ken) Howell, Timothy (Dana) Hillier, Christina (Greg) Stanton, Mary (Mike) Windle, and Edward Hillier; brothers and sisters, Jean (Tom) Brown, Dixie (Paul) Felix, Dale (Rose) Hoard, Herman (Ginny) Hoard, Sarah (Phil) Crews, and Bencil 'Butch' Hoard; sisters-in-law, Lillian Hoard and Mary 'Susie' Moneypenny; brothers-in-law, Steven Thomas (Linda) McCracken and Earl Osborn (Natalie) McCracken; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michelle, Cory, Andrew, Mike, Melissa, Matthew, Jeremy, and Kayla; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home, Ohio. Interment followed at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rondal E. Brown
Rondal E. Brown, 73, of Sutton, WV, died March 22, 2004 in CAMC, Memorial Division, Charleston, WV. He was born in Rivesville, WV April 15, 1930, the son of the late Raymond Paul and Elsie Bly Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of the Union Park Baptist Church in Orlando, FL. He was a former construction worker and manager of a hardware store and later retired from Hayman Safe Company in Ovledo, FL. He is survived by his wife Muriel Brown of Sutton, WV; two sons, Harry Dale Brown of Shreveport, LA and Rondal E. Brown II of Warrenton, VA; two daughters, Patricia White of Orlando, FL and Janice Turbeville of Lake City, FL; four brothers, Frank Manna and Anthony Perkins of Sumter, SC, Jerry Perkins of Jupiter, FL, and Raymond Perkins of Summersville, WV; four grandchildren, Derrek Brown, Toni McCumbers, Tonya Brown and Amy Caulder; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, WV with Rev. Mark Stump and Rev. Thom Malcomb officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery near Gassaway, WV. Donations may be made to the Sutton Public Library Building Fund, 450C Fourth Street, Sutton, WV 26601. Funeral arrangements were by Greene-Robertson Funeral Home.

Alice G. Sawyers
Alice G. Sawyers, 78, of Gassaway, died March 24, 2004, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital. She was born September 12, 1925, a daughter of the late David and Sarah Friend Nicholas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Little Otter United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by sisters, Beulah Faye Tucker and Betty Clowser, and brother, Ernest Nicholas. Surviving: husband of 54 years, Denzil Sawyers; sons, Tom Friend of Chapel and John Sawyers of Gassaway; daughter, Velma Seal of Exchange; brother, Charles Nicholas and wife, Mary, of Gassaway; sister-in-law, Lila Nicholas of Gassaway; sisters, Ida Stout, Wilsie Cottrell, Mary Duckworth and Alma Duffield, all of Gassaway; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with Rev. Lorous Roberts and Rev. George Hamrick officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery, Chapel.

Robert Fisher Bright
Robert Fisher Bright, 65, died after a long illness on March 14, 2004, in Dover, Del. He was born in Fairmont, W.Va., the son of the late C. M. 'Cute' and Nancy Fisher Bright. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Hall Bright, and two brothers, Franklin and John, and two sisters, Colleen and Jo Ann. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his daughter, Bobbi Kay Hensley and her husband, Kevin, of Scottsville, Va.; two grandsons, Will Smith and Hunter Hensley of Scottsville, Va.; sisters and their husbands, Mary and Ed Aldridge of Scottsville, Va., and Sue and Ivan Bailey of Georgetown, Del.; sister-in-law Marilee Bright of Sutton; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on March 18, in Flatwoods, W.Va., with burial in the Fisher Family cemetery near Sutton. Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Henry Hugh Hutchinson
Henry Hugh Hutchinson, 81, of South Center Church Rd., Thurmond, NC, passed away Monday, May 17,2004 at Yakin Nursing Care Center. Mr. Hutchinson was born December 20, 1922, in Heaters, WV to William Finley and Edna Skidmore Hutchinson. Mr Hutchinson was retired from Allowy Steel Company and attended Elkin valley Baptist Church. Was a member of Berry Fork United Methodist Church at Heaters, WV. He was a member of United Steelworkers of America. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Josephine Stonestreet Hutchinson of the home, two stepdaughters; Alice Staples and husband Larry of Thurmond, NC and Faye Alexander and husband John of Roaring River, NC, two sisters; Thelma Lively and husband Charlie of Heaters, WV and Audrey King of Sutton,WV. Four stepgrandchildren; Shonn Ross, Amy Hardy, Frances Staples and Andrew Staples, four step great grandchildren; Dustin Shores, Zachary Hardy, Tanner Hardy and Alexia Tyson. Funeral services were held at 11:00am on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Johnny Blevins. Burial was followed at old State Road Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Old State Road Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin served the Hutchinson family.

Florence Sarver Strange
Florence Sarver Strange, 89, of Sutton,WV died May 24, 2004 in Braxton County Memorial Hospital, Gassaway,WV following an extended illness. She was born June 10,1914 in Roane County the daughter of the late Rev. John W. & Laverne Rogers Sarver. Mrs. Strange was a 60 year member of Stump Chapel Church, Tesla, WV, past member of Silver-haired legislature and was very active in Braxton County Senior Citizens. She was a homemaker. Also preceding her in death was her husband Earl (TyCob) Strange who died April 3, 1981; 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by one son Earl 'Bucky' Strange of Sutton,WV; tow daughters Betty Lou Lake of Sutton and Sue Streifender and husband Mark of Cleveland, OH; four grandchildren Bret Wright, Rebecca Stewart, Susan Kvak and Cynthia Carman; 10 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. at Stump Chapel Church, Tesla, WV on Friday, May 28, 2004 with Rev. Linn Schiefer officiating. Burial was in the Strange Cemetery, Tesla, WV. Funeral arrangements are by Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton,WV.

Ilonda Lou Riffle
Ilonda Lou Riffle, 46, of Rt. 1 Orlando died unexpectedly at her home May 28,2004. She was born March 25, 1958 at East Liverpool, Ohio. The daughter of the late Ordie and Lovie Nicholson. She was married to Charles Junior Riffle November 9,1991, who survives with the following; two sons, Charles Staunton Riffle at home, John W. Carter of Weston, three daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel Tietz and Mike of Weston, Molly Ramsey and Rev. Jeff of Bridgeport, Teresa Dotson and Donnie of West Union. Two sisters and one brother survives also six grandchildren; Andrew and Aaron Ramsey of Bridgeport, Steve and Donnie Dotson of West Union, Dorothy and Ashley Carter of West Union. Several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Riffle was a loving wife, Mother and grandmother. She dedicated many years of her life working as an aid for the Braxton County Senior Citizens. A graduate of Braxton County High School, and was a active member of the Orlando Baptist Church where she served as secretary. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Orlando Baptist Church with Rev. Lonnie Ramsey officiating. Burial followed in the Heater Cemetery. Morris Funeral Home of Jane Lew was in charge of the arrangements.

Orpha Skidmore Hyer
Orpha Skidmore Hyer, of Flatwoods, WV. passed away at Braxton County Memorial Hospital on May 30, 2004 following a long illness. She was born Dec. 12, 1901 a daughter of the late Samuel J. Skidmore and Phoebe Jane Skidmore of Flatwoods Run, WV. Preceding her in death were her husband Orville Burton Hyer, brothers Oley Skidmore, Charles Skidmore, and Jim Skidmore, and one sister Effie Skidmore. She was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and a member of the Flatwoods United Methodist Church, and was recognized as Flatwoods Centurion during the Flatwoods Centurion Days Celebration. She attended Valley Dale Grade School, Flatwoods High School finishing at the Sutton High School. She received a Standard Normal Teaching Degree from Glenville State College and taught in Elementary Schools throughout Braxton County. She is survived by: Two daughters, Janet L. Burnside of Dunbar,WV., Mary Ann Rogers and husband Jim of Flatwoods,WV. Four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, WV with Rev. Vaughn James officiating. Burial will be in the Flatwoods Cemetery.

Lenard Matthew King
Lenard Matthew King, 65, of Gassaway, died May 27, 2004 at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg. He was born May 21, 1939 in Gassaway, a son of the late John and Gladys Brown King. He was a draftsman, a member of the Timmonsville Southern Methodist Church in South Carolina; a Mason and an Air Force veteran. In addition to his parents, Lenard was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. He is survived by sons; Lenard Matthew King Jr. of Lawrenceville, GA, Christopher Gregg King of Mt. Pleasant, SC, John Scott King of Florence,SC, Michael Phillip King of Gassaway, WV; daughter, Brenda Jordan of Florence, SC; brothers, David King of Birch River,WV and James King of Cleveland,OH; sisters, Helen Ross of Weston,WV, Estel Hughes of Alexandria, KY, Nellie Lockhart of Gassaway, Norma Hashman of Lucedale, MS, Linda King of Clarksburg, WV and Phyliss Jones of Gassaway; six grandchildren. Services were held on Sunday, May 30 at the Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Wesley Jones officiating. Burial was in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

David Michael Friend
David Michael Friend, 49, of Gassaway,WV, was dead on arrival Monday, May 24, 2004, at the Braxton County Memorial Hospital at Gassaway, WV. He was born September 16, 1954 at Sutton, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Lee & Virginia Victoria Hoover Friend, sister Brenda Kitsmiller & brother Jackie Friend. David accepted the lord August 28, 2001 and was a timber cutter and electrician. Surviving; companion, Patricia McHenry of Gassaway,WV, sisters; Opal Conrad of Orlando, WV, Vickie Hacker, Paula Stout and Angela Stout all of Exchange, WV, brothers; Rick Friend of Flatwoods, WV, Ronnie Friend of Parkersburg, WV and Gary Friend of Exchange, WV, also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Woods officiating. Burial followed in the Sugar Creek Cemetery near Gassaway,WV.
