Elmer W. Burns
Fort Spring-Elmer W. Burns, 90, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2002, at his home after a long illness. Born Apr. 25, 1912 at Fort Spring, he was the son of the late Michael and Minnie E. Massey Burns. Mr. Burns was a lifelong resident of Fort Spring, attended the Fort Spring Missionary Baptist Church, was a World War II veteran and retired from Acme Limestone Co., Fort Spring. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Pauline Bostic Burns, in 1984; son, William Elmer Burns, Jr.; grandson, "Butch" Terry; great-grandson, Shane Terry; sisters, Marie Hunt and Eta Terry; and four brothers, Mike, Kelly, Dick and George Burns. Survivors include: four daughters, Geraldine Terry and husband, Lester, Viola Burns, Marlene Pitsenbarger and husband, Eugene, and Patsie Thompson and husband, Hershel, all of Fort Spring; brothers, Richard Burns of Ronceverte and John (Jay) Burns of Fort Spring; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services were held May 12, at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, where the Rev. Ronald Cobb officiated. Burial followed in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Fort Spring. Men of the church served as pallbearers.

Kerwin D. Boone
Judson-Kerwin D. Boone, 45, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2002, at Summers County ARH Hospital, Hinton, following a short illness. Born Apr. 14,1957 at Judson, he was the son of Dicie Adkins Boone of Judson and the late James N. Boone. Mr. Boone was a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by brother, Seldon Boone. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Patty A. Mills Boone of Judson; daughter, Savannah Boone of Judson; son, Jason Boone of Judson; sisters, Dalana Grimmett of Wayside and Doris Ward of Judson; six brothers, Delano Boone of Judson, Lynwall Boone of Desputanta, VA, Milan Boone of McConnelsville, OH, Steve Boone of Clayton, James Boone of Stockport, OH, and Milton Boone of Judson; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, where Pastor Bobby Reed officiated. Burial was in Tempa Baptist Church Cemetery, Tempa. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Teddy G. Harris
Washington, DC-Teddy G. Harris, 92, formerly of Clayton, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2002, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. Born Apr. 13, 1910 at Clayton, he was the son of the late James Henry and Anna Laura Graham Harris. Mr. Harris had lived and worked in Washington, DC, since 1933, first for the Naval Gun Factory and later for the Naval Ordinance Laboratory from which he retired in 1970. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Wilma J. Walthall Harris, on Aug. 8, 2000; daughter, Laura Joy Guglielmi, on May 9, 2002; three brothers, Paul Graham Harris, James Arnold Harris and Cary Harris; and four sisters, Jessie H. Williams, Ora H. Hill, Georgia H. Smith and Neva H. Boone. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include: a son, Harold L. Harris and wife, Jean J. Harris, of Berwyn, PA; daughter, Janice H. Shanks and husband, Samuel L. Shanks, Jr. of Cobbs Creek, VA; six grandchildren, Dr. Mark L. Harris, Laura H. Hughes, Theodore L. Harris, Mary Lee S. Walden, David Guglielmi and Timothy L. Guglielmi; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held May 17, at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, where the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiated. Burial was in the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson.

Carol Jean Carola Gadd
Ronceverte-Carol Jean Carola Gadd, 50, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2002, after a courageous fight with cancer. She was born Jan. 11, 1952 at Ronceverte. She was the owner and operator of the Fashionique Beauty Salon in Fairlea. She was preceded in death by: her maternal grandparents, Mary Webster Church and Clarence Webster; and paternal grandparents, Mable Livesay Carola and Joseph Carola. Survivors include: her parents, Bobbie and Ruby Carola of Ronceverte; sister, Caren Dodway and husband, Jim of Lewisburg; brothers, Joe Carola and wife, Betty of Ronceverte, John Carola of Asbury, and Robert Carola and wife, Candace of Ronceverte; niece, Jennifer Winters and husband, Mark of Ronceverte; nephews, Joey Carola and wife, Peggy, of Glace, Jason Carola stationed with the U.S. Marines in Yuma, AZ, Eric Eggleston of Lewisburg, Trey Cochran and Andy Carola both of Ronceverte; and great-nieces, Hannah, Autumn, Mary Rebekkah and Victoria Grace of Ronceverte. Services were held May 6, at Rhema Christian Center in Fairlea, where Pastor Lewis Moyer and Pastor Rick Allen officiated. Interment was in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Tavane Lynn Hudson Kirchner
Sterling, VA-Tavane Lynn Hudson Kirchner, 44, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2002, at her home after a long illness. Born Feb. 22, 1958 at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of Oran W. Hudson of New Mar-tinsville and Retha Rudd Bryant of Fairlea. Ms. Kirchner was formerly of Fairlea, a graduate of Greenbrier East High School in 1976, attended BYU where she studied commercial art, and was employed for 14 years as assistant manager for Hunterswoods Fellowship House, Reston, VA. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include: daughters, Kiana Daine Kirchner and Jasmine Keila Kirchner, both at home; sisters, Alta Tilley and husband, Winston, of Braden-ton, FL, and Paquita Griffiths of Erin, Ontario; and half sister, Taunia Hudson of New Martinsville. Services were held May 7, at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, where Bishop Terry VanNutter officiated. Burial followed at Ketron Cemetery, Rockland Road, Ronce-verte.

Roy M. Crone
Lewisburg-Roy M. Crone, 91, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2002, at Greenbrier Manor due to natural causes. Born Dec. 20, 1910 at Lewisburg, he was the oldest of ten children of the late Jacob and Emma Clingman Crone. Mr. Crone was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church. He was a lifelong resident of Muddy Creek Mountain. His professions included sawmill yard boss and stone quarry equipment operator, but he spent most of his life as a carpenter. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and traveling. He was preceded in death by brothers, Okey, Milton and Paul Crone; and sister, Kathleen McLaine. Survivors include: his wife of nearly 70 years, Margaret Crone; sons, Walter and Everett Crone; daughters, Frances Erskine and Loretta Kelly; sisters, Gertrude Jones, June Hodges, Bessie Lotts, Barbara Shifflet and Elsie Jones; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services were held May 6, at the Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg, where the Rev. Dexter Taylor and Dr. Susan Sharp Campbell officiated. Entombment followed at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lewisburg.

Karen A. Cooke Pritt
Frankford-Karen A. Cooke Pritt, 47, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor, VA, following a three-year battle with cancer. Born Dec. 31, 1954 at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of Katherine Yates Cooke of Anthony and the late Ted Cooke. Mrs. Pritt was a member of Anthony Baptist Church, and a seven-year employee of B.F. Goodrich Aerospace Plant, Union. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lacy and Bertha Yates, and Ted and Helen Cooke. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include: her husband, Robert Pritt of Frankford; and brother, Walter Cooke of Anthony. Services were held May 8, at McCraw Funeral Home Chapel, Frankford, where the Rev. Clarence Griffith officiated. Burial was in Frankford Cemetery.

Robert M. Greenway, Sr.
Fort Spring-Robert "Bob" M. Greenway, Sr., 76, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2002, at his home after a long illness. Born Aug. 9, 1925 at Hinton, he was the son of the late Leo and Minnie Young Greenway. Mr. Greenway was a lifelong resident of Fort Spring, a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church of Fort Spring, a World War II veteran, a member of Masonic Lodge #158, Chelyan, and a retired construction worker. He was preceded in death by: son, Robert M. Greenway, Jr.; and two sisters, Ruth Stanfield and Ruby Greenway. Survivors include: his wife, Lula "Buzz" Greenway of Fort Spring; daughters, Margaret Octavia Young of Teays Valley and Louise Lizanna Fleshman of Smoot; sons, Roger Dale Green-way of East Bank and Kenneth W. Greenway of Fort Spring; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were held May 8, at Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring, where the Rev. Gary Gourley officiated. Burial followed in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Eliza Lillian McClintic
Williamsburg-Eliza Lillian McClintic, 95, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at The Brier Nursing Home in Fairlea. Born Mar. 28, 1907 at Hughart, she was a daughter of the late Joseph W. and Biddie C. McClintic. Miss McClintic spent most of her life on the family farm in Rader's Valley, Williamsburg. She taught school in Greenbrier County from 1925 through 1968. From 1925 through 1956 she taught in 10 different one-room schools and completed her career at Williamsburg Elementary. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Lewisburg Chapter. She was preceded in death by: brothers, Lawrence "Jack" McClintic and Charles E. McClintic; sisters, Polly McClintic Graybeal, Nettie McClintic Withrow and Margaret McClintic Fauss. Survivors include: nephew, Jack and wife, Evelyn Graybeal of Blacksburg, VA; great-nephews, Daniel L. Graybeal of Melbourne, FL, David E. Graybeal of Longmont, CO, and Dale K. Graybeal of Raleigh, NC. Services will be held Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg with the Rev. Leroy Crane officiating. Burial will follow in Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Williamsburg.

Leslie E. Hefner
White Sulphur Springs-Leslie E. Hefner, 81, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a short llness. Born Sept. 23, 1920 at Neola, he was the son of the late Arthur W. and Flora W. Hefner. Mr. Hefner graduated from White Sulphur Springs High School and served in the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps. He was employed by the West Virginia Liquor Commission and worked at The Greenbrier for 37 years. He attended Oakhurst Episcopal Church, White Sulphur Springs. He was preceded in death by: his first wife, Pauline Perkins Hefner; second wife, Ellen Carter Hefner; and brothers, John A. and Lonnie W. Hefner. Survivors include: daughter, Louise Dowdy and husband, Dale of White Sulphur Springs; brother, Joe Hefner and wife, Debbie of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four sisters, Annabelle Barker of Greensburg, PA, Wilma H. Stump and husband, Hillard of Roanoke, VA, Nellie H. Doan and husband, Lee of Warren, OH, and Janie H. Boggs and husband, Emmett of Ligonier, PA; special friend, Eva Crookshanks of White Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Chris and Sheena Dowdy and friend, Adam Humphrey; one niece; and several nephews. Services were held May 9, at Shanklin Funeral Home Chapel, White Sulphur Springs. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington, VA.

Chloe B. Littlepage
Ronceverte-Chloe B. Littlepage, 86, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2002, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA, following ccmplications from a car accident. Born Feb. 22, 1916 at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Granville and Cynthia Pauley Morgan. Mrs. Littlepage was an active member of the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church, former Sunday school teacher, member of the Ladies Circle, and a retired laborer from the Greenbrier Laundry, once located in Ronceverte. She was preceded in death by: her husband, John Littlepage; sister, Relda Massey; three brothers, Robert Morgan, Emory Morgan, and Alfred Morgan; and stepbrother, Dewey Morgan. Survivors include: daughter, Betty L. Masters of Organ Cave; granddaughters, Beverly Traino and husband, Scott, Dianne Beale and husband, Tim, and Jennifer Young and husband, Roy; six great-grandchildren, Nathan Traino, Nicole Young, Dustin Young, Matthew Beale, Michael Beale and Sarah Beale; sister, Alice Wykle of Ronceverte; sister-in-law, Garna Morgan of Watertown, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held May 9, at Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church, where the Rev. Tim Dillon officiated. Burial was in the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church Cemetery. Jerry William Landis
Ronceverte-Jerry William Landis, 39, passed away on Monday morning, May 6, 2002. Born Apr. 7, 1963 at Marlinton, he was the son of the late Harold and Berry Piotrowski Landis. Mr. Landis was a carpenter and a home repairer with the Landis Land Company. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Teresa Lynn Piotrowski, Cindy Carol Landis and Heather Louise Sharp. Survivors include: sons, Michael King of Yorktown, VA, and Jeremy Landis of White Sulphur Springs; grandmother, Charlotte Piotrowski of Ronceverte; sister, Drema Moore and husband, Jimmy of Marlinton; brothers, Harold "Buck" Landis, Jr. and wife, Judy of Ronceverte and Robert McClure of Atlanta, GA; aunt, Ann Lowry and husband, Bob of Arkansas; uncles, William Piotrowski and wife, Ann of Indiana and Chuck Landis of California; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at Campbell-town United Methodist Church, Marlinton, with the Rev. Gerald Kincaid officiating. Burial will be in Ruckman Cemetery. Virginia Dare Burdette
Smoot-Virginia Dare Burdette, 90, passed away Sunday, Apr. 28, 2002, at the home of her care-givers Glenna and Larry Parrish of Smoot. Born Feb. 16, 1912 in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Leah Carter Harris. Mrs. Burdette was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg and was a retired school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ray Burdette. Survivors include: son, Paul Edward Burdette of Lewisburg; brothers, Fred Harris of Springfield, VA, and Buck Harris of Florida; and special friends, Larry and Glenna Parrish of Smoot, with whom she made her home. Graveside services were held Apr. 30, at New Dublin Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dublin, VA. There was no visitation. Mary W. Eggert
Lewisburg-Mary W. Eggert, 75, passed away Sunday, Apr. 28, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a short illness. Born Dec. 27, 1926 at Monroe, NC, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Annie Gould Porch Wells. Mrs. Eggert was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Lewisburg, where she served on the Altar Guild for several years. She was a member of Lewisburg Chapter No. 108 Order of the Eastern Star, having joined in 1945 and when moving to Lewisburg in the 1970s, transferred her membership. She was presented her 50-year pin in 1998 at the Lewis-burg Chapter where, over the years, she served as a faithful member, serving many offices of the chapter. On the state level from January 2000 until January 2002, she represented the state as grand representative of Indiana in West Virginia. She was also a member of Tri City Continuing Education Outreach Service and Greenbrier Valley Medical Center's Senior Friends Program. Survivors include: her husband, W. F. Eggert of Lewisburg; sons, William "Bill" Eggert, III and his wife, Susan of Denver, CO, and Robert Eggert and his wife, Connie of Frankford; daughter, Ann Brown of Richmond, VA; sister, Jean Prather of Georgetown, KY; and four grandchildren. Memorial services were held May 2, at St. James Episcopal Church, where the Rev. James Conyers officiated. McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Franklin Ramsey
Lewisburg-Paul "Frank" Franklin Ramsey, 76, passed away Thursday, Apr. 25, 2002, at his home after a long illness. Born Sept. 3, 1925 at Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Emery J. and Nannie C. Blake Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was formerly of Ronceverte and had lived in Lewisburg for several years. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Ronceverte, member of the United Methodist Men, Treasurer of the church, chairman of the board, a trustee, chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relationship Board, former Mayor of Ronceverte, member of the Greenbrier County Planning Commission, American Legion #69, Ronceverte Rotary Club, Veterans of Foreign War, and worked part-time for the Longanacre Funeral Home. He was a World War II veteran, served in the European Theater with the U.S. Army, received the Bronze Star and the rank of Chief Warren Officer 3 before joining the WV National Guard (150 Howitzar Battery), Clifford Armory, Ronceverte, where he retired with 36 years of service. He was preceded in death by: his sister, Emma Jean Sydenstricker; and three brothers, Richard Ramsey, Lester Ramsey and James Ramsey. Survivors include: his wife, Mary Alice Ramsey of Lewisburg; sons, Gary Ramsey of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Anthony "Tony" Ramsey of Roanoke, VA; Mary's two daughters, Lois Hanna of Frankford, and Lori Honaker of Ronceverte; five brothers, Cecil Ramsey of Peterstown, John Ramsey of Elyria, OH, Robert Ramsey of Sparta, TN, Bill Ramsey of Lewisburg, and Ernest Ramsey of Roanoke, VA; and nine grandchildren. Services were held Apr. 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Ronceverte, where the Rev. Mike Estep officiated. Burial followed at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Lewisburg. Madeline Martha Hartsell
White Sulphur Springs-Madeline Martha Hartsell, 83, passed away on Monday, Apr. 29, 2002, at her residence following a short illness. Born Mar. 15, 1919 at White Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late James Wallace and Eula Mae Burns Bostic. Mrs. Hartsell was retired from the United States Government, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Franklin Hartsell, in 1985. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Services were held May 2, at the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Kingwood.

Marguerite Hunter McClung
Fort Spring-Marguerite Hunter McClung, 89, passed away Sunday, Apr. 28, 2002, at her home after a long illness. Born on Jan. 16, 1913 at Second Creek, she was the daughter of the late Charles Clayton and Helen Campbell Hunter. Mrs. McClung spent most of her early life in Monroe County, graduating from Union High School in 1930. She began teaching in one-room schools when she was 18. She taught for five years at Curry, Hylton, Sunset, and Sugar Stump schools. In 1936, she married Thomas H. McClung, from near Ronceverte and they moved to his farm near Ft. Spring where she resided until her death. She attended Alderson Junior College and received her degree from Concord College. She taught at Greenbrier High School, White Sulphur, Organ Cave and Lewisburg. Mrs. McClung was a very active member of the Grace United Methodist Church at Ft. Spring. She taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class for about 45 years and was church organist for 35 years. She served as a church trustee and was a member of the United Methodist Women for 60 years. She was the first president of the Ft. Spring Extension Homemakers' Club (now C.E.O.S.) and was a member for 60 years. She was the Greenbrier County "Belle" for the Homemakers in 1985. She served as a 4-H Club leader and belonged to the Union Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving a term as Worthy Matron. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Thomas H. McClung in 1955; and four brothers, Durward Hunter, Lee Hunter, Roscoe Hunter and Frank Hunter. Survivors include: daughter, Mary McClung Fullen and husband, Floyd of Ft. Spring; grandchildren, John Fullen and wife, Amy and Elizabeth Reynolds and, husband, Keith, all of Ft. Spring; five great-granddaughters, Katlyn, Rebecca and Sarah Fullen and Abigail and Molly Reynolds, all of Ft. Spring. Services will be Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m., at the Grace United Methodist Church, Ft. Spring, with the Rev. Gary Gourley officiating, Burial to follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery, Pickaway. White Sulphur Springs-Clarence Thomas "Chappy" Allen, 76, passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 30, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. Born July 4, 1925 at Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Lucille Cousins. Mr. Allen was a retired employee of The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, a member of St. James United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, and was a World War II and Korean Conflict U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include: his wife, Hazel Robinson Allen at home; sons, Thomas Allen of Scarbro and Keith Allen of Greenville, NC; daughter, Annette Rogers of Mt. Hope; stepdaughters, Valerie H. Damon and Mary Alice Beverly, both of White Sulphur Springs; brothers, Carl Haynes of Ronceverte and Donald Haynes of Silver Spring, MD; five sisters, Cornelia Bush of Dayton, OH, Doris Fitts of Columbus, OH, Joyce Rhodes and Mary Ann Cousins, both of Ronceverte, and Wanda Boggs of White Sulphur Springs; 21 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Emory Hanna officiating. White Sulphur Springs- Helene Mae Hager, 76, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following an extended illness. Born July 29, 1925 at Cumberland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Daisy Porter Reed. Mrs. Hager was a member of First Presbyterian Church, White Sulphur Springs and the church circle, a member of the White Sulphur Springs Woman's Club and a trustee of the Greenbrier County Youth Camp at Anthony. James L. Walton
Talcott-James L. Walton, 77, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the VA Medical Center, Beckley, following a long illness. Born Feb. 10, 1925, in Alleghany, VA, he was the son of the late John Letcher and Annie Blue Warren Walton. Mr. Walton was a retired Civil Service employee having retired from the Andrew S. Rowan Memorial Home, Sweet Springs, with 22 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of Tri County Memorial VFW Post #6723, Alderson. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 51 years, Clara Virginia Wickline Walton on July 14, 2001; sister, Fronna Feury; and three brothers, John Lewis Walton, Delbert Walton and Julian Walton. Survivors include: daughter, Susie Huffman and husband, Donnie of Oceana; four sons, Roger Walton of Talcott, Larry "Squeekie" Walton and companion, Lorry of Hilldale, Richard Walton and wife, Judy of Hollywood, and Randy Walton and wife, Cathy of Taylorsville, NC; sisters, Florence Huffman of Creamery and Geneva Ellis of Oak Hill; three brothers, Berman Walton of Charleston, Charlie Walton of Covington, VA, and Leslie Walton of Winston Salem, NC; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services and interment will be Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Campground Cemetery, Creamery, with the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiating. William Ernest Bostic
White Sulphur Springs-William Ernest Bostic, 82, passed away Monday, Apr. 15, 2002, in Allegheny Regional Hospital at Low Moor, VA, after a long illness. Born Apr. 3, 1920, at White Sulphur Springs, he was the son of the late Leslie A. and Allie Mae Alexander Bostic. Mr. Bostic was a lifelong resident of White Sulphur Springs, attended the White Sulphur Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was a World War II veteran. He worked for the C&O Railroad and was retired from The Greenbrier with 30 years service in the Engineering Department. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Blanche Violet Huffman Bostic, Apr. 13, 2001; a daughter, Wanda Jean Bostic in 1966; and two sisters, Mona Bollinger and Anna Belle Carper. Survivors include: three daughters, Debbie Neff and husband, Bob of White Sulphur Springs, Violet Harrison and husband, Cleveland of Caldwell, and Nora Shirley and husband, Bill of White Sulphur Springs; son, William Dale Bostic of Franklin; three sisters, Ruth Wachter of Westminster, MD, and Bonnie Carper and Marie Kirkpatrick, both of White Sulphur Springs; and two granddaughters, Michelle Harrison and Kimberly Shirley. Services were Apr. 17, at the White Sulphur Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church where the Rev. Cleveland Harrison and Rev, Gene Sizemore officiated. Burial was in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg, Arrangements by Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea.

Martha Mae Plumley
White Sulphur Springs-Martha Mae Plumley, 78, passed away Monday, Apr. 15, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following an extended illness. Born Sept. 5, 1923, at White Sulphur Springs, she was a daughter of the late Simon Peter and Georgia Mae Higginbotham Jarvis. Mrs. Plumley was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Roscoe Carl Plumley; a brother, Gordon Woodrow Jarvis; and three sisters, Anna Lee Scott, Lillian Cardillo and Genevieve Ethel Coulter. She is survived by: three daughters, Gladys "Penny" Fitzpatrick of Jumping Branch, Gloria Glover of White Sulphur Springs and Sharon K. Napier of Lewisburg; two sons, Barry Allen Plumley of Marion, NC, and Randall Plumley of Beckley; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Apr. 18, in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs where Pastor Jonathan B. Comer officiated. Interment was in Whatcoat Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.

Walter J. Sheets
Lewisburg-Walter J. Sheets, 73, passed away Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born Sept. 9, 1928, in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late Joe and Lucy Gandee Sheets. Mr. Sheets was owner and president of the Walter Sheets and Sons Trucking Company. He was a retired salesman for the Motorcar Supply Company and a member of the Edgewood Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the Mission Committee. Survivors include: his wife, Marguerite Wickline Sheets; daughter, Carolyn Sheets Napier of Lewisburg; sons, Donald Lee Sheets and wife, Phyllis, and Mack M. Sheets and wife, Jane, all of Lewisburg; sisters, Margaret Hanna of Staunton, VA, and Alese Sizemore of Jefferson, OH; brothers, John and Bessie Sheets of Ocala, FL, and Galon and Ruth Sheets of Pueblo, CO; grandchildren, Paul Shannon Napier, Dana Renick, Angela Sheets, Deadra Laxton, Michael Sheets, Chad Sheets and Debra Sheets; great-grandchildren, Shannon Honaker, Wyatt Renick, Josie Renick, Kassidy Renick, Alicia Napier, Skyelar Alice Sheets and Samuel Laxton; and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors. Services will be held Saturday, Apr. 20, at 11 a.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewis-burg with Rev. Sally Woodard and Rev. Arnie Maynard officiating. Wallace Edgel Jack
Covington, VA-Wallace Edgel Jack, 41, passed away Wednesday, Apr. 17, 2002, at his home. Born Apr. 21, 1960, in Pearisburg, VA, he was the son of Rev. Charles C. and Margaret Young Jack of Alderson. Mr. Jack was formerly of Alderson and had lived in Covington, VA for the past 12 years. He was of the Baptist faith, a 1978 graduate of Greenbrier East High School, Fairlea, and attended Potomac State College. He worked for Coastal Mart for 15 years; 3 years in Ronceverte and 12 years as Manager in Covington. VA. Survivors include: his parents; wife, Diane Miller Ryan Jack of Covington, VA; sons, John and Travis, both of Covington, VA; sister, Merriam Cole and husband, John "J.J." of Asbury; brother, Malcolm Jack; special friends, Patty, Amanda and Sissy Stuart of Forest Hill; nieces, Letisha and Amanda Cole; nephew, John "J.J." Cole III; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Services were held Apr. 19, at Longanacre Funeral Home, Ft . Spring, where the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiated. Burial followed in the Gwinn Cemetery, Alderson. Pallbearers were: Jeff Taylor, Ernie Taylor, Phillip Miller, Stevie Miller, Johnny Miller, John Ryan, Travis Ryan, and Roger Allen Carr. James O. Meadows
Alderson-James O. Meadows, 86, passed away Friday, Apr. 12, 2002, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, following a short illness. Born Mar. 4, 1916, at Hinton, he was the son of the late Omer Lake and Frances Ball Meadows. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Kathleen Sims Meadows; a daughter, Shelley Jean Meadows; a sister, Nadine Houchins; and brothers, Eugene Meadows and Leonard Meadows. Mr. Meadows was a retired labor consultant and the owner of Meadows Consultant Service, Alderson, retiring after 27 years of business. He was also an airplane pilot for: Panagra Airlines, Lima, Peru from 1943-1946; TWA, New York from 1946-1948; and Peruvian International Airlines, Lima, Peru from 1948-1950. He was also a former employee of the U.S. Department of Labor, Charleston. He was a 1934 graduate of Talcott High School, Talcott and a member of Alderson Presbyterian Church, Alderson. Survivors include: son, James Omer Meadows, Jr. of Easton, MD; daughter, Carole Meadows McCrone of Yamhill, OR and Martinborough, New Zealand; brother, Robert Joseph Meadows of Moneta, VA; sisters, Dorothy Casdorph of San Diego, CA, Margaret Houchins of Winter Haven, FL, and Sara Miller of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren, D. James McCrone of State College, PA, John McCrone of Annapolis, MD, Suzanne Meadows Hogan of Stevensville, MD, Mary Anne Meadows of Princeton, and James Omer "Jay" Meadows III of Waitsfield, VT; five great-grandchildren, Fiona, Annie and Jake McCrone and Emily Anne and Conor Hogan; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Apr. 20, at 2 p.m. at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Deana M. Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Ballengee. Virginia E. Erwin
White Sulphur Springs-Virginia E. Erwin, passed away Thursday, Apr. 18, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness. Born in Greenbrier County, she was a daughter of the late Rumsey David and Leonora Perry Grogg. Mrs. Erwin was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Harrington Erwin in 1989. Survivors include: daughters, Linda Brammer and husband, Billy of Auto and Janice L. Grimmett and husband, Eddie of White Sulphur Springs; brother, Irie J. Grogg of Wood-bridge, VA; sister, Gussie H. Boggus of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Michael Reynolds, Lt. Markus Reynolds, Staff Sgt. Greg Brewster and wife, Julie, Lori Brewster and Eddie "Poco" Grimmett; four great-grandchildren, Leslie, Michael, Aaron and Hannah. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, Apr. 22, at 1 p.m. at Little Creek Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Billie Joe Woolwine
Ronceverte-Billie Joe Wool-wine, 72, passed away Thursday, Apr. 4, 2002, at his home in Ronceverte. Born May 1, 1929, he was the son of the late Opal Arthur and Pearlie Mae Underwood Wool-wine. Mr. Woolwine was of the Baptist faith, a stock clerk and retired from the Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Mary Frances McQuade Woolwine; a son, James E. Woolwine; and a sister, Freda Patton. Survivors include: daughter, Kathy Jean Walton of Taylorsville, NC; three sons, John A. Woolwine of Lewisburg, OH, Joe Woolwine of Appomattox, VA, and Jerry Ray Woolwine of Ronceverte; sister, Phyllis Sue Johnson of Luray, VA; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held Apr. 7, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte where Rev. Youel Altizer officiated. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.

William Franklin Burger
White Sulphur Springs-William Franklin Burger, 77, passed away Sunday, Apr. 7, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following an extended illness. Born Jan. 19, 1925, at Healing Springs, VA, he was a son of the late Roland and Elizabeth Dolan Burger. Mr. Burger was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, a retired assistant manager of The Greenbrier, a Mason and a World War II Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland Burger, Jr. and Charles L. Burger. Survivors include: his loving wife of 54 years, Pearle Burger, at home; daughter, Barbara B. Dinwiddie and husband, Jim of Proctorville, OH; sons, William R. Burger and wife, Kathy of Raleigh, NC, and Andrew Burger and wife, Denise of Clinton, NJ; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Apr. 10, in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, where the Rev. Brent Sturm officiated. Interment followed in Alleghany Memorial Gardens, Low Moor, VA. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Memorial Fund of Emmanuel United Church in Mr. Burger's name.

Virginia L. Boggs
Auto-Virginia L. Boggs, 81, passed away Sunday, Apr. 7, 2002, at Charleston Area Medical Center. Born Sept. 22, 1920, at Auto, she was a daughter of the late Dan and Mary Loudermilk. Mrs. Boggs was a retired nursing assistant at Denmar State Hospital and also worked at The Greenbrier and was of the Baptist faith. She was a wonderful mother and a special friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by: her first husband, Lee Louder-milk; her second husband, Willie Boggs; a grandson, Leroy Agee; two sisters, Lucy Brant and Martha Loudermilk; and a special nephew, Dan Loudermilk. Survivors include: daughter, Eva Jean "Jeanne" Agee and husband, Hank of Auto with whom she made her home; grandsons, Ron Agee of Roanoke, VA, and Rodney Agee of Auto; a great-grandson, Luke Agee of Frank-ford; a stepson and stepdaughter; several step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Graveside services were held Apr. 11, at Woodland Community Cemetery at Auto where Rev. Jim Anderson officiated. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the American Red Cross or the Cancer Society.

Aretta Lena Hughes
Caldwell-Aretta Lena Hughes, 82, passed away Sunday, Apr. 7, 2002, at home. Born Oct. 3, 1919, at Unus, she was a daughter of the late William and Bessie Estep. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and a member of Shuck Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Early Hughes on Dec. 1, 1992; and her twin sister, Arenna McKeever in December 1982. Survivors include: son, William Hughes and wife, Rosemarie of Caldwell; daughter, Jeanette "Jean" Brightbill and husband, Jim of Caldwell; grandsons, Charles Hughes and wife, Rhonda, Daniel Hughes and wife, Missy, Jim Brightbill, Jr. and granddaughter, Deborah Sullivan; and great-grandchildren, Kimberly Reed, Krystal and Colby Hughes, Shannon and Michelle Sullivan, Amy, Jim and Tim Brightbill. Services were held Apr. 10, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewis-burg where the Rev. Johnny Zeboskey officiated. Burial was in Rosewood Cemetery in Lewis-burg.

Lambuth E. Nutter
White Sulphur Springs-Pastor Lambuth E. Nutter, 87, passed away at home Tuesday, Apr. 9, 2002, of heart failure. Born Sept. 2, 1914, in Mount Hope, he was the youngest child of Newman Lloyd and Lucy Etta Nutter. Mr. Nutter graduated from Morris Harvey College at Barboursville and began teaching in Greenbrier County at the age of 19. After teaching for about 10 years, he and his brother, Lloyd A. Nutter, established the Nutter Brothers Cash Store and MacMary's Wholesale Gift Shop. In 1942, Pastor Nutter began his ministry at the Community Tabernacle in White Sulphur Springs and continued until his death. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 51 years, Mary Bronaugh Nutter; a son, Lambuth Lee Nutter; a grandson, Lambuth David Nutter; brothers, Leslie, Lloyd A., and Herbert Lee Nutter; and a sister, Lelia Fife. Survivors include: daughters, Mary Sandra and Glee Lelia Nutter both of White Sulphur Springs; sons, Leslie Dee and wife, Frances of York, PA, and Newman Lewis and wife, Deborah of Poca; daughter-in-law, Gayla of Lexington, SC; eight grandchildren, Lynette, Scott, Lambuth Alan, Justin, Andrea, Evan, Ryan and Drew; and eight great-grandchildren, Gary, David, Brittany, Hanna, Jeremy, Malachi, Madelyn, and Elizabeth. Services will be held on Saturday, Apr. 13, at 11 a.m., at the Community Tabernacle Church with Pastor John Kelly officiating. The church will be open one hour prior to the service. Shanklin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Joe Scott
White Sulphur Springs-Joe Scott, 73, passed away Monday, Apr. 8, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following an extended illness. Born Aug. 17, 1928 at Renick, he was a son of the late Winters and Elizabeth Jane Cochran Scott. Mr. Scott was a retired carpenter and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Clifford and John Scott; and three sisters, Net Martinia, Mable Stidom, and Emzie Walton. He is survived by: his wife, Wanda Spinks Scott, at home; three sons, Ronnie Scott, Joey Scott and his wife, Brenda, and Jimmie Scott, all of White Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Carolyn Ware and her husband, Barry, and Anita Martin and her husband, Wendell, all of White Sulphur Springs; five grandchildren, Joey, Jr. and his wife, Miranda, Melissia, Kevin, Kimberly and Aaron; one great-granddaughter, Timber Lynn; sister, Grace Church of Akron, OH; and sister-in-law, Audrey Scott of Greenwood. Funeral services were conducted Apr. 11, in the Whatcoat United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, where the Rev. Paul Suttle officiated. Interment was in Mapledale Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, was in charge of the arrangements.
