Nancy Jo Jarrell
Fairlea-Nancy Jo Jarrell, 35, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born Nov. 17, 1966, in Howell, she was the daughter of Carolyn Patterson Cyr of Princeton and Homer D. Jarrell of Alderson. Ms. Jarrell was a graduate of Greenbrier East High School and Concord College with a bachelor of arts degree in travel industry management. While attending Concord College, she served as president of the Student Government Association and president of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She also received her master’s degree in justice leadership from Marshall University. She was a homemaker and a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Kyle and Edith Jarrell; and her maternal grandfather, Roscoe Patterson. Survivors include: three sons, Albert Alexander, age 3-1/2, Jackson Allen, age 2, and Nicholas Ross, age 2-1/2 months, all of Fairlea; her father, Homer D. Jarrell of Alderson; her mother, Carolyn Patterson Cyr and companion, Ronald D. Fink, of Princeton; maternal grandmother, Pearl Patterson of Woodbury, TN; two sisters, Susan Jarrell Brumfield and husband, Jonathan of Charlottes-ville, VA and Janet M. Jarrell of Lewisburg; niece, Lauren Ashley Brumfield of Charlottesville; nephew, Christian Andrew Brumfield of Charlottesville, VA; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Services were held Aug. 6, at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson where the Rev. Dan Stemple officiated. Burial was at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Serving as pallbearers were: Ronnie Cruse, Jonathan Brum-field, Jim Dick, Roger Baker, Rich Canterbury, Doyle Law, Ben Fink and Joey Fink. Anna Sue Humphreys Nickell
Sinks Grove-Anna Sue Humphreys Nickell, 93, passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in the Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home, Fairlea, after a long illness. Born Apr. 4, 1909, in Ronce-verte, she was the daughter of the late Rutherford A. and Martha Reynolds Humphreys. Mrs. Nickell was a lifelong resident of Sinks Grove, a member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church of Sinks Grove, a member of the Women’s Christian Circle and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl James Nickell; son, Edward Bayne Nickell; and four brothers. Adger, Sidney, Other and Harry Humphreys. Survivors include: sons, Robert Nickell and Thomas W. Nickell, both of Sinks Grove; half brother, Stanley Humph-reys of Ronceverte; and two grandchildren. Service were held Aug. 7, at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel in Fairlea where the Rev. Gary Baker officiated. Burial followed in the New Lebanon Cemetery, Pickaway.

Lennie Roberts
Marlinton-Lennie Roberts, 83, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. Born Mar. 30, 1919, at Leonard, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillie Roberts Lewis. Mrs. Roberts was of the Baptist faith and was a former health service worker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bolivar Roberts; sisters, Estel Rudd and Tempie Baldwin; and three brothers, Tom, Delbert, and Gale Lewis. Survivors include: daughters, Bennie May Emenheiser of Pennsylvania and Alice Roberts of Lebanon, VA; sons, Van Roberts of Renick and Leland Roberts of Hephzibah, GA; sister Miriam Roberts of Marlinton; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. The body has been cremated, and graveside services will be held at a later date. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Judy LaFon Holliday
Organ Cave-Judy LaFon Holliday, 58, passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002 at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home in Fairlea. Born Mar. 11, 1944 at Ron-ceverte, she was the daughter of Sallie McMann LaFon of Organ Cave and the late Edward LaFon. She was a lifelong resident of Organ Cave, a member of Salem Presbyterian Church, Organ Cave Homemakers, 4-H of Organ Cave Ruritan Club. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward LaFon; and a sister, Patricia Wade. Survivors include: her mother, Sallie McMann LaFon of Organ Cave; daughter, Lori Deskins of Maxwelton; son, Jeff Holliday of Organ Cave; and three grandchildren. Services were held Aug. 8, at the Salem Presbyterian Church in Organ Cave where the Rev. Doyle Kester officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. There was no visitation. Martha Turner McMurray
Lewisburg-Martha "Monna" Turner McMurray, 77, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in Genesis Family Care Center in White Sulphur Springs after a long illness. Born Feb. 21, 1925, in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Alexander Scott and Martha Rader Turner. Mrs. McMurray graduated from Greenbrier College for Women, attended North Carolina University, and graduated with a major in art from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH. She worked as a commercial artist in Washington, DC and was a homemaker. She was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church where she coordinated the women’s operation of the American Thrift Shop, served as a deacon, and was active in P.E.O., A.A.U.W., and many other organizations. She was preceded in death by a brother, J. Alexander Turner. Survivors include: her husband of 52 years, William H. McMurray; sons, John Moore McMurray and wife, Michele of Monument, CO and Edward Turner McMurray and wife, Jan of Raleigh, NC; sister, Nancy Turner Snodgrass of Nashville. TN; sister-in-law, Shelia Clark Turner of Lexington, OH; and four grandchildren. A private graveside service was held Aug. 7, at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg. A memorial service was held Aug. 7, at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg where the Rev. J. Dexter Taylor officiated. In lieu of flowers gifts may be given to the Old Stone Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Juanita Mildred McGinnis
Lewisburg-Juanita Mildred McGinnis, 85, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea. Born Feb. 2, 1917, at Sistersville, she was the daughter of the late Olive and Ophia Ernest Richards. Mrs. McGinnis was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lester A. McGinnis; sister, Joyce Ann Lyons; and two brothers, Bud and Junior Richards. Survivors include: son, Bruce R. McGinnis and wife, Paula of Lewisburg; two grandchildren, Gregory and Brian of Hilton Head, SC; and sister, Lenora Pancake of Sistersville. Upon her request, the body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. A private memorial service will be held for the family. All donations of sympathy are requested to be made to the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, 214 E. Washington Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901. Mary Lenettia Cox
White Sulphur Springs-Mary Lenettia Cox, 70, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at home after an extended illness. Born June 19, 1932, at Clymer, PA, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Guy and Mary Lenettia Spencer Painter. Mrs. Cox was retired from The Greenbrier and was a longtime member of the Peniel Pentecostal Church in White Sulphur Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew P. Cox on Mar. 8, 1998; sisters, Elizabeth Painter and Monabelle Pantall; and five brothers, Lester, Alfred, Thomas, James and Richard Painter. Survivors include: sister, Sylvia M. Peiffer of Saronburg, PA; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held July 29, at the Peniel Pentecostal Church in White Sulphur Springs where the Rev. Okey King officiated. Robert Browning Range
Alderson-Robert Browning "Crip" Range, 76, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2002, at home following a long illness. Born Sept. 11, 1925, in Morristown, TN, he was the son of the late William Arthur and Daisy Hobbs Range. Mr. Range was a retired self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, in combat in South Pacific invasions. He was a member of Tri County Memorial VFW Post #6723, Alderson, and was of the protestant faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Burt Range and a sister, Katherine "Sister" Grimmett. Survivors include: his wife, Shirley A. Still Range of Alder-son; daughter, Anne Marie Richardson and husband, Greg of Raleigh, NC; son, Edward Glen Range of Alderson; sister, Daisy Range of White Sulphur Springs; two grandchildren, Zachary Richardson and Ashley Richardson, both of Raleigh, NC; sisters-in-law, Mary Still of Burke, VA and Lois Range of California; brothers-in-law, Joe Still of Miami, FL and Jack Still of Alderson; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services and interment were held July 31, at the Fletcher Addition of the Alder-son Cemetery where Jim Eskins officiated. Military graveside rites were conducted by Tri-County Memorial VFW Post #6723, Alder-son. Lobban Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ocie Ella Nicely
Williamsburg-Ocie Ella Nicely, 92, passed away Monday, July 29, 2002 in Genesis Family Care Center, White Sulphur Springs. Born Aug. 1, 1909, in Braxton County, she was the daughter of the late Warrick and Dora Barb Cogar. Mrs. Nicely was a homemaker and a member of Trout Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Nicely; two grandsons, Curtis Nicely and Robert Hinkle; great-grandson, Robert "Tinker" Hinkle; and sister, Nelva Zimmerman. Survivors include: daughter, Glenna Hinkle Taylor of Will-iamsburg; son, Denzil Nicely of Victoria, TX, 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Aug. 2, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg where the Rev. Roger Williams officiated. Burial followed in Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.

Pearl DeViese Miller
Pence Springs-Pearl DeViese Miller, 96, formerly of Wyoming County, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Summers County ARH Hospital following a short illness. Born June 19, 1906, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Cordelia Painter DeViese. Mrs. Miller was a retired school teacher having taught in Lincoln, Fayette, Boone and Wyoming counties. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pence Springs Community Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Clell E. Miller; brothers, Howard H. DeViese and James E. DeViese; and sisters, Clara Mae Vaught, Ruth Huffman, and Helen Buckland. Survivors include: son, Robert C. Miller, Sr. and wife, Joy of Berea, KY; two grandsons, Dr. Robert C. Miller, Jr. and wife, Lesa of Rochester, MN and Bennett M. Miller of Melbourne, FL; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Miller, Robert C. Miller III and Henry Miller, all of Rochester, MN; brother, Lloyd DeViese and wife, Kathryn of Titusville, FL; special friend, Naomi Ryan of Pence Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held July 31, at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, where the Rev. Roger Persinger officiated. Burial was in Haven of Rest Cemetery, Pence Springs. Howard H. Kellison
Hillsboro-Howard H. Kellison, 91, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002, in Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in Marlinton. Born Aug. 18, 1910, he was the son of the late Jud and Nancy Hagy Kellison. Mr. Kellison was retired from the Forest Service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Dean Kellison. Survivors include: sister, Erma McClung of Columbus, OH; brothers, James "Roe" Kellison of Columbus, OH and Elba Kellison of Archdale, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held July 27, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg, where the Rev. Jim Anderson officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery at Hillsboro.

Brack L. Campbell
Lewisburg-Brack L. Campbell, 90, passed away Friday, July 26, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea. Born Mar. 26, 1912, at Dawson, he was the son of the late John and Lillie Woollard Campbell. Mr. Campbell was of the protestant faith and was a former member of the WV House of Delegates. He was also a charter member of Lewisburg Lions Club and Rupert Rotary Club, a member of Lewisburg Elks Lodge, and the Greenbrier County Historical Society. He was a retired state auditor with the West Virginia Department of Tax and Revenue. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Mildred Smith Camp-bell; sister, Mildred Jones; and brother, Delvin Harrah. Survivors include: daughters, Marilyn Carney and husband, Charles of Frankford and Sue Moss and husband, Bruce of St. Albans; sister, Mary Quillen of Smoot; brother, James Richard Campbell of Keyser; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were held July 29, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, where the Rev. Ron Miller and the Rev. Paul Bresnahan officiated. Burial was in End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville. Delbert Edsel Hammons
Fairlea-Delbert Edsel Hammons, 80, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002, at his home following a long illness. Born Feb. 15, 1922, at Renick, he was the son of the late Jink and Lockie Meadows Hammons. Mr. Hammons was preceded in death by: sons, Bobby and Ray; sister, Marjorie; and brothers, Melvin, Ralph, and Delmas. He was a retired equipment operator for the city of Bel Air, MD. Survivors include: his wife, Ada Blankenship Hammons; three daughters, Bonnie Palm of Satellite Beach, FL, Linda Hammons of Bel Air, MD, and Pamela Hammons of Portsmouth, VA; two sons, Franklin of Davenport, IA and Timmy of Fairlea; five sisters, Gwendolyn Black of Biggs, CA, Ruth Sawyer and Shelby Scanlon, both of Oroville, CA, Shirley Blasser of Wrightsville, PA and Audrey Boyd of Pasco, WA; three brothers, Marvin and Junior Ray of Gridley, CA and Gene of Royce, TX; grandson, Russell Simmons of Edgewood, MD; and special friends, W.R. and Mary Burdette of Fairlea. Margaret Davis Friedman
Ronceverte-Margaret Davis Friedman of Nether Mills Farm, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at home. Mrs. Friedman was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. She was a retired registered nurse, having trained at St. Johns Hospital and Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. She served as operating room supervisor at McMillan Hospital and Director of Nurses at St. Francis Hospitals in Charleston and served 18 years as a Red Cross nurse in Wood County. Mrs. Friedman was president and life member of Camden Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg and past State President of the West Virginia Auxiliary. She served as President of the Parkersburg Arts Center and was a member of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Society of the National Arts and Letters. She had also served on the Board of Directors of the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace Foundation since 1974. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Friedman and a son, Robert Brown Friedman. Survivors include: sons, Charles F. Friedman, Jr. of White Sulphur Springs and Davis W. Friedman of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren, Charles Frederick Friedman III of Frankfurt, Germany, Foster S. B. Friedman of Alexandria, VA, Frank W. Fried-man of Lexington, VA, Margaret Christie London of Vienna, VA, Lisa Carter of Lewisburg, Robert Friedman of Lewisburg, Wells Friedman of Lewisburg, and Elizabeth Richmond of Fort Spring; 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, Alfred J. Davis of East Palestine, OH. A Memorial Service will be conducted Sunday, Aug. 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg where Mrs. Friedman served as a Deacon and as an Elder. The Rev. J. Dexter Taylor and the Rev. Susan Sharp Campbell will officiate. The body has been given to the West Virginia Medical Center in Morgantown. The family requests no flowers. Carrie E. Erskine
Fairlea-Carrie E. Erskine, 96, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea following an extended illness. Born Mar. 8, 1906, at Pence Springs, she was the daughter of the late William Robert and Margaret Ann Reed Bennett. Mrs. Erskine was a retired seamstress and a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairlea where she was a member of the Missions Group. She was also member of the Senior Friends of Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy G. Erskine; eight brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include: daughters, Edith Ann Pritt and husband, Tom of Crown Point, IN and Betty Jo Giudice and husband, Frank of Southern Pines, NC; brother, George Bennett of White Sulphur Springs; sister, Colleen Walton of Ronceverte; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services were held Aug. 2, at the First Baptist Church in Fairlea where the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiated. Burial was in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens. Theodore W. Arbaugh
Muddy Creek Mountain-Theodore W. Arbaugh, 72, passed away Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home following a short illness. Born Oct. 20, 1929, at Alder-son, he was the son of the late Price and Mary Ball Arbaugh. Mr. Arbaugh was the owner and operator of Arbaugh Industrial Engine, Fort Spring. He was also a mechanic at the former H. Frazier Company, Fort Spring for 30+ years. He was a member of the Alderson Church of the Nazarene and was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Tri County Memorial VFW Post #6723, Alderson. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Doris Phillips Arbaugh; brothers, Preston and Keith Arbaugh; and sisters, Virginia Rider and Joyce Phillips. Survivors include: three sons, William Phillips and wife, Alice, Jack Arbaugh and wife, Kathy, and Jeffery W. Arbaugh, all of Alderson; two daughters, Libby Harvey and husband, John of Alderson and Carol Varney and husband, John of Surveyor; brother Lloyd Arbaugh and wife, Alma of Moses Lake, WA; sisters, Louise Highlander of Fort Spring and Melissa Richmond and husband, Melvin of Oak Hill; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Services were held July 22, at the Alderson Church of the Nazarene, Muddy Creek Mountain, where the Rev. Ed Midcap officiated. Burial was in the Phillips Family Cemetery on Muddy Creek Mountain. Serving as pallbearers were: Lucky Richmond, John Henry Cooper, Ray Cutlip, Henry Carter, B.J. Phillips, Cotton Walker and James Carter. Rev. Kermit Leslie Newberry
Alderson-The Rev. Kermit Leslie Newberry, 85, passed away Friday, July 19, 2002 at his home following a short illness. Born July 28, 1916, at Wolf Creek, he was the son of the late Floyd Jackson and Katherine Smith Newberry. Rev. Newberry was a retired steamfitter, having retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Alderson, after 23 years of service. He was also a former employee of the Goodyear Aircraft Plant in Akron, OH. In 1978 he became an ordained minister and pastored at the Sinks Grove Baptist Church and at the Bethel Methodist Church. He was a member of the Flint Chapel Baptist Church and was a 50-year member of Alderson Masonic Lodge #70 A.F. & A.M. He was preceded in death by a brother, Travis Newberry; and a grandson, Marvin Andrew "Andy" Newberry. Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Ethel Faye Bowyer Newberry of Alderson; son, Marvin Newberry and wife, Nancy of Akron, OH; daughter, Hazel Burns and husband. Rick, of Alderson; brothers, Roy J. "Jack" Newberry and wife, Frieda, and Joe Dale Newberry and wife, Judy, all of Akron, OH; sisters, Marjorie Bostick of Akron, OH, and Margaret McCaulley of Crossville, TN; two grandchildren, Jill Bennett and fiance, Todd Trent of Maxwelton and Zachary Burns of Alderson; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held July 23, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson where the Rev. Nathan Adkins and Pastor Charlie Taylor officiated. Burial was in the Alderson Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were members of Alderson Masonic Lodge #70 A.F. & A.M. Honorary pallbearers were: Buddy Thompson, Ed Thompson, Bill Banton, Tom Farren, Clyde Barker, and Charles Arbaugh. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by Alderson Masonic Lodge #70 A.F. & A.M.

R. Eugene Hanger
Alderson-R. Eugene Hanger, 85, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2002, at White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center following a short illness. Born May 12, 1917, at McKendree, he was the son of the late Charles Dana and Margaret Virginia Lively Hanger. Mr. Hanger was the former owner and operator of Hanger Radio and TV Sales. He was a research technician at Appalachian Electronic Instrument, retiring after 20 years of service. He was a graduate of Alderson High School and was a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson. His hobbies included playing the violin, astronomy, photography, electronics, and radio-controlled model aircraft. He was preceded in death by a brother, E. Sterling Hanger. Survivors include: sister, Dorothy E. Hanger of Alderson; sister-in-law, Mary Frances Hanger of Alderson; niece, Kimberlee Hanger White of Alderson; nephew, E. Sterling Hanger, Jr. of Alderson; great-niece, Lacey Dana White of Alderson; and several cousins. Services were held July 22, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson where the Rev. Dan Stemple officiated. Burial was in the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson.

Henry Christian
Lewisburg-Henry "Slick" Christian, 65, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2002 at his home. Born Nov. 4. 1936 at Keister, he was a son of the late Roy and Christine Wykle Christian. Mr. Christian was a retired machinist for Business Executive Machines in Hickory, NC, an Air Force veteran and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Fogus Christian; daughters, Donna Christian and Debbie Carroll and husband, Neil of Hickory, NC; stepdaughters, Teresa Byers and husband, Gary of Atlanta, GA and Tina Martin of Dublin, VA; stepsons, Timmy Hall and wife, Sandra and Tommy Hall, all of Lewisburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 22 step-grandchildren; brothers, Junior and Irene Christian of Petersburg, VA, Joe and Polly Christian, and Sam and Linda Christian of Lewisburg; and sisters, Gerlie Orion of Vermont, Lorrine and John Dartt and Norma and Gary Carter of Ronceverte, and Doris and Curt Scruggs of Mt. Sidney, VA. Services were held July 25, at Enon Baptist Church at Frankford, where the Rev. Everette "Hat" Defibaugh and Rev. Lula Collins officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of the arrangements.
