Robert Uel Marion
White Sulphur Springs-Robert "Bob" Uel Marion, 87, passed away Friday evening, Sept. 27, 2002 in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea after an extended illness. Born May 4, 1915, at Green Sulphur Springs, he was a son of the late David Preston and Minnie Callison Marion. Raised on his parent’s 80-acre farm at Green Sulphur Springs, he graduated in the Class of 1934 from Green Sulphur District High School, attended and pursued agricultural studies at West Virginia University, then returned home to operate the family farm until he was called to serve his country. Mr. Marion was of the Pentecostal faith. He was a professional fireman, retiring in 1973, holding the rank of Captain in the Paterson, NJ Fire Department, a position he held for many years. He was a member of the Paterson Fireman’s Benevolent Association, was a former member of the White Sulphur Springs Rotary Club and was a World War II Army Air Force veteran. While serving his country, he was educated in several training schools for airplane body and engine repair which included the B-29 engine and the auxiliary system and also became an instructor for the airplane and engine mechanics classes. Preceding him in death were: his first wife, Adrian K. Marion in 1987, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include: his wife of 15 years, Gladys Feury Marion, at home; daughter, Margaret M. Schollaert and husband, Robert of Chambersburg, PA; son, Robert H. Marion and wife, Nancy of Mancos, CO; five stepsons, Charles Feury and wife, Wilma of Covington, VA, Lonnie Feury and wife, Barbara of Hopewell, VA; Larry Feury and wife, Neva; Jimmy Feury and wife, Mahala and Gary Feury and wife, Carol, all of White Sulphur Springs; two stepdaughters, Donna Miers and husband, Robert of Hopewell, VA and Linda Davidson and husband, Aaron of Rainelle; four grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Oct. 1, in the First Pentecostal holiness Church at Covington, VA, where the Rev. Charles Feury, Rev. Gene Sizemore and Rev. Aaron Davidson officiated. Expressions of sympathy may be made to: the First Pentecostal Church, 610 S. Allegh-any Ave., Covington, VA 24426. A private burial will be held at a later date in the Green Sulphur Springs Cemetery at Green Sulphur Springs. Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs was in charge of the arrangements.

Theresa Lynn Ware Drennen
Fairlea-Theresa Lynn (Ware) Drennen, 46, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born Jan. 12, 1956, at Richwood, she was the daughter of the late Oral "Shorty" and Margaret Ann Mathes Ware. Mrs. Drennen was a resident of Fairlea for 11 years and was of the Baptist faith. She was a cashier for Wal-Mart in Lewisburg and was a 1974 graduate of Greenbrier West High School. Survivors include: her husband, Larry D. Drennen; daughter, Stevi Anette Gray and husband, John, of Rupert; two sisters, Linda Hall and husband, Lionel, of Newton Falls, OH, and Kim Keaveney and husband, Gene, of Fayetteville NC; brother, Larry Ware and wife, Robin, of Elyria, OH; three grandchildren, Aryana, Cassie and John Lee; eight nephews; and nine nieces. Services were Sept. 30, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where the Rev. Jim Nicely officiated. Burial will be at Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Serving as pallbearers were: Gene Keaveney, Gary Michael Facteau, John Gray, Earl Drennen and Larry Warf.

Edward Steven Hayes
Plainfield, In-Edward Steven Hayes, 42, formerly of Fairlea, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, of injuries received in a automobile accident at Clayton, IN. Born Feb. 21, 1960, in Lewisburg, he was the son of Joetta Hayes and the late Thomas A. Hayes, Sr. Mr. Hayes was an Air Force veteran and a Fed Ex driver. Survivors include: three daughters, Holly Marie Hayes, Kelsi Lynn Hayes and Shelby Renee Hayes, all of Westfield, IN; his mother, Joetta Hayes of Fairlea; sister, Karen Hanna of Lewisburg; brother, Thomas A. Hayes, Jr. of Lewisburg; and grandmother, Ethel King Hayes of Fairlea. Graveside service and burial were held Oct. 3, at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg where the Rev. Stewart Farley and Rev. Lewis Moyer officiated. There was no visitation. Pallbearers were: G. Scott, Wayne Pennington, Jimmy Holcomb, Pat Ferrell, Pete Hanna and Robert Hanna, Jr. Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea, was in charge of the arrangements.

Janie Inez Fox
Ronceverte-Janie Inez Fox, 76, passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in the Lewis Gale Medical Center, Roanoke, VA, after a long illness. Born Apr. 10, 1926, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Harry William and Nettie Ruth Hamilton Martin, Sr. Mrs. Fox was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte, a cook and supervisor for the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Fox; daughter, Drema Bohanon; sister, Alice Faulkner; and two brothers, Mike Martin and Harry W. Martin, Jr. Survivors include: son, Charles "Butch" Fox of Ronceverte; three sisters, Thelma Jackson and Ruby Stone, both of Ronceverte and Betty Moore of White Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held Oct. 3, at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel in Fairlea where the Rev. Donald Weikle officiated. Burial followed in the James Memorial Chapel Cemetery, Hokes Mill Road, Ronceverte.

Gregory A. Crosier
Salem, VA-Gregory A. (Crow) Crosier, 52, formerly of Sweet Springs, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002. Mr. Crosier was the son of the late Clinton Roscoe and Vida Gertrude Baker Crosier. He was retired from Salem Contracting Company where he had been an employee for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by; sister, Minnie Humphries; and three brothers, Roscoe "Sonny," Eric and Herdon Crosier. Survivors include: his wife, Diana B. Crosier; son, Greg Upton and wife, Melanie; stepson, Paul B. Allen; grandson, Dylan Upton; step granddaughter, Kendyl Brenemen; two sisters, Phyllis Martin and husband, Odell, and Norma Bales and husband, Ivan, all of Pearisburg, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held Oct. 4, in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs. Burial followed in the Mountain View Cemetery at Sweet Springs.

David Alexander Fleshman
Blue Sulphur Springs-David Alexander "Little Man" Flesh-man, 9, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, following a short illness, Born Jan. 24, 1993, in Fairlea, he was the son of David Lewis and Pamela Carol Yopp Fleshman. Alex was a member of The American Dairy Goat Association, 4-H, and Young Bucks Outdoors and attended the Blue Sulphur Church of God. His favorite things were Elvis the pig, Maggie "Good Girl" and Molly Molly, his dogs; Ott the kitty; Pony Pony, his pony; and his special friends. Alex loved all kinds and colors of flowers. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Helen C. Fleshman; and his maternal grandfather, Ermil F. Yopp. In addition to his parents, survivors include: his paternal grandfather, Lewis A. "Bud" Fleshman, Jr. of Alderson; his maternal grandmother, Bonnie Yopp of Summers County, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Services were held Sept. 24, at the Alderson Presbyterian Church, Alderson where the Rev. Sam Groves and the Rev. W. M. Hoylman officiated. Burial was in the End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville. Serving as pallbearers were: Mike Yopp, Noel Adkins, Paul Howard Brooks, Tony Hiser, Mark Livesay, and Justin Shockley. Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson was in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie E. Boyce
Winchester, VA-Jessie E. Boyce, 95, longtime resident of Greenbrier County, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Winchester, VA. She was born Sept. 20, 1907, in Auto. Mrs. Boyce was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil H. Boyce; and a son, Nelson Boyce. Survivors include: daughter, Sybil Reynolds of Lewisburg; son, Milton Boyce of Stephens City, VA; two sisters, Fayree Malcomb of Marlinton and Erma Anthony of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren, Craig Boyce, Cynthia Boyce, Eric Boyce, Tom Reynolds, Dawn Boyce, April Boyce and Shirley Boyce; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held Sept. 25, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where the Rev. Julian Sulgit and the Rev. Patricia Jarvis officiated. Burial followed in Rosewood Cemetery. Lonnie S. Craft
Alderson-Lonnie S. "Steve" Craft, 53, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Charleston Area Medical Center General Division, Charleston, following a short illness. Born Mar. 11, 1949, at Alderson, he was the son of the late John Paul "Red" and G1enna Virginia Grimmett Craft. Mr. Craft was a disabled construction worker. Survivors include: two sisters, Anne of Dallas, TX, and Sue of Cleveland, TN; five brothers, Bobby and Benny, both of Dallas, TX, Johnny of Cleveland, TN, Melvin of Alderson, and Dennis of Greenville; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. At his request, there will be no services. The family requests that contributions of sympathy be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson.

Emma Conrad Pfrommer
Lewisburg-Emma Conrad Pfrommer, 89, formerly of Green Lane, PA, and Virginia Beach, VA, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Brier Rehabilitation Center in Ronce-verte after a brief illness. Born Feb. 20, 1913, in Montgomery County, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Welker Conrad. Survivors include: daughter, Constance Trumbauer of Hereford, PA; granddaughter, Denise (Trumbauer) Kennedy Graves and husband, Dr. Jeffery Graves, of Lewisburg; and six great-grandchildren, Erin, Lauren, Patrick, Brad, Elizabeth and Eric. Services were held Sept. 26, at St. John’s Lutheran Church where the Rev. Charles Eiss officiated. Burial followed in the Trinity Great Swamp U.C.C. Cemetery in Spinnerstown, PA. Kellie V. Crum
Lewisburg-Kellie V. Crum, 84, passed away Tuesday morning Sept. 24, 2002 at the Raleigh General Hospital. Born Mar. 19, 1918 at Meadow Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Faye Shuck Fitzwater. Mrs. Crum was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Bardel "Buck" Crum; and two brothers, Lonzo and Everette Fitzwater. Survivors include: daughters, Phyllis Patton Brem of Pittsburgh, PA and her sons, Robb Watts of Pittsburgh and Joey Watts of Bethesda, MD, and four great-grandchildren and Susan Crum Dixon and husband, Mike of Lewisburg and beloved grandsons, Neil and Scott Dixon; three sisters, June Fitzpatrick of Layland, Merlene Bentert of Dennison, OH and Jenevie Bennett of Niagra Falls, NY; and four brothers, Dallas Fitzwater of Meadow Bridge, Calvin Fitzwater of Beckley, Jesse Fitzwater of Rupert and Roy Fitzwater of Elkins. Norma Joyce Chambliss
Nashville, TN-Norma Joyce Chambliss, 54, formerly of Ronceverte, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 in Nashville. Born Oct. 19, 1947 at Nashville, she was the daughter of Otis Chambliss of Nashville, TN and the late Elizabeth Temple Chambliss. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Douglas Chambliss. Survivors, in addition to her father, include: son, Charles L. Krystynak, Jr. of Caldwell; five daughters, Myrna Elizabeth Harrison of Hot Springs, VA, Myona Charlene Shepherd of Mechanicsville, VA, Shirley Darlene Krystynak of Nashville, Mellissa Krystynak Strunk of Wewoka, OK, and Bridgett Krystynak King of Virginia Beach, VA; sisters, Shirley A. Withrow and Myrna L. Ivey both of White Sulphur Springs; brothers, Ross Chambliss of McPherson, KS and Raymond Chambliss of Mt. Juliet, TN; and 13 grandchildren. Charles Edward Reese, Sr.
Alderson-Charles Edward Reese, Sr., 69, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at his home in Alderson following a long illness. Born Nov. 13, 1932 at Minden, he was the son of Margaret C. Smith Sawyers of Alderson and the late Samuel Edward Reece. Mr. Reese was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, retiring as Staff Sergeant and having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam era. He attended the Alderson Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Tri County Memorial VFW Post #6723, Alderson, the Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF & AM, the Alderson Lions Club and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was preceded in death by: his father; sister, Nancy Reece Masters; grandson, Mitchell Lee Phillips; and stepfather, Robert Sawyers. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Mary Ellen Christian Reese of Alderson; son, Charles Edward "Chip" Reese, Jr. and companion, Diane of Alderson; four daughters, Barbara Brooks and husband, Jerry, Nancy Smith and husband, George, and Chrissy Harris and husband, Roger, all of Alderson and Donna Martin and husband, Rick of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter, Kiera Jade Phillips, expected in November; three step great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. George Dale McCoy
Friars Hill-George Dale McCoy, 47, passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at home. Born Mar. 15,1955, in White Sulphur Springs, he was the son of George McCoy and Eleanor Garnette, both of Ronceverte. Mr. McCoy was a heavy equipment operator for Nickell Paving. Survivors include: his wife, Laura; daughters, Tina McCoy of Charles City, VA and Cynthia McCoy of White Sulphur Springs; sons, Adam McCoy of Columbus, OH and Jack McCoy at home; maternal grandmother, Christine Morgan of Pence Springs; three brothers, Tommy McCoy and Gary McCoy, both of Ronceverte and Tim McCoy of Fort Spring; and five grandsons, Shawn, Cameron, Bailey, Devron and Lavon. Services were held Sept. 16, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg where the Rev. Gary Baker officiated. Burial followed in the McCoy Family Cemetery at Friars Hill.

James Edward Brown
Staunton, VA-James Edward Brown, 65, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA. Born Apr. 19, 1937 at Renick, he was the son of the late Pryor and Mable Scott Brown. Mr. Brown was of the Baptist faith and an Army veteran. He was a meat cutter for Safeway Foods. Survivors include: his wife, June Lawrence Brown; daughter, Tracy Wray of Manassas, VA; son, Doug Brown of Warrenton, VA; brother, Joe Brown of Staunton, VA; and five grandchildren. Services were held Sept. 20, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where Rev. Jonathan Comer officiated. Burial was in Morningside Cemetery at Renick.

Samuel P. Levan
Frankford-Samuel P. Levan, 72, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea. He was born Sept. 7, 1930 in Virginsville, PA. Mr. Levan was a route driver for 15 years for the Charleston Newspapers. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: his wife, Joanna Levan; daughters, Rachel Levan of Frankford and Naomi Morgan and husband, Jeff of White Sulphur Springs; son-in-law, Kris Copenhaver of White Sulphur Springs; brothers, Paul, Russell, Clarence, Arthur and George all of Pennsylvania and Freddie of New York; sister, Ruth of Pennsylvania; and grandchildren, Laura, Andrew, Regina, Megan and Kristen Copenhaver. Services will be Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

Warren K. Patterson
Lewisburg-Warren K. "Red" Patterson, 74, passed away in The Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fairlea on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 following an extended illness. Born Nov. 5, 1927 at Hughart, he was the son of the late William and Ada V. Williams Patterson. Mr. Patterson was of the Protestant faith. He received his early education in the Williamsburg School and was a retired self-employed demolitionist. An avid horseman, he was a former Ring Master in the Bluegrass Bowl at the State Fair of West Virginia. He held membership in the Masonic Lodge No. 42 AF & AM. He was a former member of the Maxwelton Ruritan Club and an honorary member of the West Virginia Sheriff's Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arla Patsy Hines Patterson in 1962. Survivors include: daughters, Deborah Jean Graham and husband, Patrick of Bluefield, VA and Melissa Ratliff of Fairlea; son, Warren Allen Patterson of North Carolina; two brothers, Carl A. Patterson and wife, Kathleen of Fairlea and Jimmy Dale Patterson and wife, Kay Ellen of Murrells Inlet, SC; granddaughter, Adrienne Hines Graham of Bluefield, VA; seven other grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Bedford and Carol Hinkle of Lewisburg. Funeral services were held Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home where the Rev. Jay Hicks officiated. Burial followed in Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. From Sam Black, his body will be transported to the cemetery by horse and wagon by his friend, Bedford Hinkle.

Houston M. Preston
El Paso, SFC Houston M. Preston (Ret.), 58, entered into rest on July 21, 2002. He was a longtime resident of El Paso, TX, formerly of White Sulphur Springs. SFC Houston M. Preston served in the U.S. Army 22 years. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, and both the First and Second Oak Leaf Cluster. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers, and a sister. Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Preston of Texas; stepfather and mother, John L. and Alice G. Banks; sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Fred Carter; sister, Sharon M. Banks all of White Sulphur Springs; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry W. and Jan Preston of Tacoma, WA; daughter, Danielle and son, Willis both of Washington, DC; eight stepchildren; a host of grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Funeral services were in El Paso July 26. Interment was at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors.

Henry H. Deal
Lewisburg-Henry H. Deal, 92, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born Nov. 18, 1909, in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Lawrence David and Lucredia Wood Deal. Mr. Deal was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lewisburg and was a retired welder and mechanic for Imperial Coal & Construction Co. He was also self employed businessman and co-owner of Deal & Sullivan Texaco in Morgan-town. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brad Miller, two brothers, Wilson and Roy Deal; and a sister, Mabel Smithson. Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn Hoylman Deal; four daughters, Betty Sullivan and husband, Frank, of Summersville, Beatrice Crist of Morgan-town, Barbara Miller and husband, Morris, of Hansford, and Bernice Brackens and husband, Archie of Lewisburg; sisters, Lois Jenicek of New Mexico, MO, and Nadine Phillips and Lucy Irvin both of Wilmington, DE; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held Sept. 12, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where Father Roy Crist and the Rev. Jonathan Comer officiated. Burial was in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg.

Allen H. Jeter
Lewisburg-Allen H. Jeter, 75, of Lewisburg and New York City, passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. Born Aug. 15, 1927, in Rainelle, he was the youngest son of Charles Jeter and Lorena Morrison Jeter. Mr. Jeter graduated from the University of Illinois where he began a career as a jazz saxophonist. After graduating with a degree in business, he moved to New York City. He also began a career as an investment banker and became executive vice president of Textile Bank. In 1989, he created "Al Jeter’s," a gourmet jazz restaurant on New York’s West 58th Street. After retirement, he returned to Greenbrier County to look after his aunt, Margaret Garner, and formed the Greenbrier Corporation to develop Highland Springs. In Lewisburg, forming jazz groups was a large part of his current work, from the Ghost Town Swing Band to his own collaborations with colleagues Gary Klein, Frank Spicer, Gary Moran, Larry Rockwell, Ron Free, Bob Peckman, and Tony Hayworth. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles. Survivors include: his aunt, Margaret Garner of Greystone Manor in Lewisburg; and several cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to MusiCares, 156 West 56th St., Suite 1701, New York, NY 10019. Established in 1989 by the Recording Academy, Musi-Cares ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical or personal crisis. A memorial service will be held Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg with the Rev. Dexter Taylor officiating. Interment will be in End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville. McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Marie Adwell
Lewisburg-Dorothy Marie Adwell, 59, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea. Born June 1, 1943, in Fairlea, she was the daughter of Mable Morris and the late Dana Bryant. Mrs. Adwell was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Morris. Survivors include: her husband, William T. Emma G. O'Farrell
Chevy Chase, MD-Emma G. O’Farrell, 88, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2002, in Gaithersburg, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. O’Farrell in 1990. Survivors include: daughters, Cecelia O’Farrell Murphy and Mary O’Farrell Ludewig; sons, Robert Haller O’Farrell, Daniel Edge O’Farrell and John J. Ruth C. Morgan
Ronceverte-Ruth C. Morgan, 75, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at her home. Born Jan. 1, 1927, in Ronceverte, she was the daughter of the late Randall and Mamie Morgan. Mrs. Morgan was a homemaker and a member of the Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church near Organ Cave. She was preceded in death by two sons and a daughter. Survivors include: her husband, Gerald O. Morgan; son, Roger L. Morgan of Ronceverte; two grandchildren, Angela Remley and Stephanie Williams, both of Ronceverte; two great-grandchildren, Corey Morgan and Joseph Remley, both of Ronceverte; sister, Lottie Morgan of Ronceverte; and two brothers, Dallas Morgan and Jimmy Morgan, both of Ronceverte. Services were held Sept. 1, at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church where the Rev. Mike Estep and the Rev. Gary Baker officiated. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Ronceverte. Edwin H. Ridgeway
Ronceverte-Edwin H. Ridge-way, 76, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at the Genesis Family Care Center. Born Mar. 15, 1926, at Hollywood, he was the son of the late John and Mamie Van-stavern Ridgeway. Mr. ridgeway was a member of the Nazarene Church of Ronceverte, a World War II Army veteran where he was awarded the victory medal and was retired from Hercules. He was preceded in death by daughter, Shirley and brother, Clark. Survivors include: his wife, Ella Moody Ridgeway of Ronceverte; five daughters, Mamie Adams and husband, Roger of Union, Ethel Wilson and husband, James of Alderson, Kathy Nida and husband, Earl of Glace, Rose Kirby and husband, Junior of Alderson and Irene Ward and husband, Jerry of Clintonville; six sons, Jim Ridgeway and wife, Patricia, John Ridgeway and wife, Lucy and Bill Ridgeway and wife, Ruth, all of White Sulphur Springs, Charles Ridgeway and wife, Brenda and Paul Ridgeway and wife, Evelyn, all of Lewis-burg and Roy Ridgeway and wife, Sharon of Fairlea; sister, Nellie Boggs of Sinks Grove; 24 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Liv Knudson
Lewisburg-Liv Knudson, 79, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at her home after a long illness. Born May 30, 1923 in Troms, Norway, she was the daughter of the late Halldis Haugen. Mrs. Knudson had been a resident of Lewisburg for the past four years. She was a member of the Clifton Presbyterian Church of Maxwelton and was a retired registered nurse. Survivors include: her husband, Knud Knudson of Lewis-burg; daughter, Halldis and husband, Dr. Tom Sayvetz and son, Leif of Fort Spring; and son, Tore Knudson of Atlanta, GA. Deland, FL-Frances Louise Lewis, 85, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Deland, FL. Born Sept. 15, 1916, in Columbus, OH, she was the daughter of the late Willard Brett and Elizabeth Tanner Wilson. Mrs. Lewis was a resident of Deland for 14 years and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul B. Lewis; son, Karl Fremont Hundley; and two brothers, Raymond Wilson and Owen Wilson. Elmer Lee Honaker
Fairlea-Elmer Lee Honaker, 47, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 at his home. Born June 24, 1955 at Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Ralph Lee and Madeline Long Honaker. Mr. Honaker was an employee of Rescare, a member of Rhema Christian Center and Tahoe Farm Club and a former member of the Fairlea Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his companion, Annavee Morgan. James William Hall
Alderson-James William "Billy" Hall, 84, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, after a long illness. Born Sept. 8, 1917, at Ramage in Boone County, he was the son of the late Archie and Pearl Ball Hall. Mr. Hall was a World War II Army veteran. He was of the baptist faith and was retired from Union Carbide in South Charleston, with 48 years of service. He was preceded in death by: a sister, Louise Williams; three brothers, Howard Ray Hall, Archie Hall, Jr., and Frankie Hall. Survivors include: a daughter, Sherry Hall of Alderson; a son, Mick Hall of St. Albans; his wife, Ruth Hall of St. Albans; three sisters, Lillian Reynolds of Huntington, Emogene Borders of Coal Grove, OH and Helen Ball of Ramage; two brothers, George (Park) Hall of St. Albans and Johnny Hall of Cape Coral, FL; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Ernestine W. Bailey
White Sulphur Springs-Ernestine W. Bailey, 76, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea. Born Sept. 21, 1925 in Botetourt County in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Melvin V. and Arvilla Waldron. Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker and housewife. She accepted Christ early in life and was of the Baptist faith, and was a member of Chapter 671 of the AARP and the National AARP. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, George Bailey in July 1993; and one brother and one sister. Survivors include no relatives, but many friends. Services were held Aug. 29, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg where the Rev. Bill Ballard officiated. Burial followed at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg. Rev. Simon M. Nester
White Sulphur Springs-Rev. Simon M. Nester, 74, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at his home following a brief illness. Born Oct. 11, 1927, at Glace, he was the son of the late Montague O. and Virginia Huffman Nester. Rev. Nester was the minister at the Pentecostal Free Holiness Church at Caldwell. He had radio ministry on the Ronceverte-Lewisburg station WRON for 55 years. He was a heavy equipment operator on the grounds of The Greenbrier, retiring after 51 years of service. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 51 years, Evelyn Faye Nicely Nester; three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include: two sons, Charles Nester and his wife, Judy of Rainelle, and Kenneth Nester and his wife, Carla, of White Sulphur Springs; four daughters, June Walton and her husband, Lonnie of Homer, Linda Mullens of Salem, VA, Connie Wykle and her husband, Bruce of Smithfield, VA, and Sharon Glass and her husband, Micheal of Roanoke, VA; a special friend, Shairlenn Wykle of Caldwell; five sisters, Eunice McMann and Grace Bostic, both of White Sulphur Springs, Elva Parrish and Lorena Henderson, both of Indianapolis, IN and Viola Campbell of Troutville, VA; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three dogs, Penny, Jackson, and Cheba. James Robert Jeffries
Lewisburg-James Robert "Bob" Jeffries, 92, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002 at his home in Lewisburg after an extended illness. Born Jan. 7, 1910 at Lewisburg, he was the son of the late Theodore Anderson and Mattie Knapp Jeffries. Mr. Jeffries worked for Ford Motor Company in Lewisburg for 60 years under three dealer-ships: Lewisburg Motor Co., Martin Ford Sales and Griffith-Bryant Ford. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Richlands Ruritan Club and Calvary Cemetery Association and held various offices in each. He was preceded in death by: two sisters, Agnes J. Munsey and Willie J. Collins; and three brothers, G. Button, E. Mason and Richard T. Jeffries. Survivors include: his wife, Jannet Wood Jeffries; sister, Ora Mae Folden and husband, James of Delmont, PA; sister-in-law, Delsia Jeffries of Charleston; 18 nieces and nephews; a host of great and great-great-nieces and nephews; and a large circle of friends. Services were held Aug. 20, at Calvary United Methodist Church at Richlands where Rev. Gary Gourley and Rev. Paul Suttle officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Larue Benton Morgan
Ronceverte-Larue Benton Morgan, 86, passed away Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness. Born Oct. 10, 1915 in Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Will and Maude Master Morgan. Mr. Morgan was a lifelong resident of Ronceverte, a WW II veteran as Private First Class of Company "G" 513th parachute infantry, member of the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, Ronceverte and was retired from the Greenbrier Valley Memorial Vault Co., Inc., Ronceverte. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Clifford, Paul and Herskel Morgan. Survivors include: his wife of 52 years, Lottie Morgan of Ronceverte; four daughters, Boot Morgan and husband, Eddie of Salem, VA, Bonnie Hall and husband, Freddie of Wirtz, VA, Annabell Loomis and husband, Jack and Sharon Buzzard and husband, Jackie all of Ronceverte; two sons, Tom Norman and wife, Twila and Tony Morgan and wife, Sebrina all of Ronceverte; sister, Georgie Morgan of Culpeper, VA; brother, Orby Morgan of Ronceverte; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services were held Aug. 22, at the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, Horseshoe Bend Road, Ronceverte where Elder Timothy Crane and Rev. Gary Baker officiated. Leonard E. Terry
Ypsilanti, MI-Leonard E. Terry, 52, passed away at his home of a sudden illness on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002. Terry was a former resident of Bentree. Born at Bentree on Jan. 9, 1950, he was the son of the late Nolan E. and Mary Louise McGraw Terry. Mr. Terry attended Clay County High School and was a 33-year employee of the Ford Motor company in Wayne, MI. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle Terry. Survivors include: his wife, Vicki Terry; sons, Matthew and Jon, both of Ypsilanti; sisters, Janet Spangler of Ronceverte, Nola Faye Jones of Aurora, CO and Betty Joyce Allison of Montgomery; brothers, John Terry of Dale City, VA and Mike Terry of Clendenin. Harriet M. Williams
Lewisburg-Harriet M. Williams, 82, passed away in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002 following a short illness. Born in Lewisburg Apr. 17, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Mary Page Kelly. Mrs. Williams was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church where she was a member and secretary of the United Methodist Women. She was a former Sunday School teacher and superintendent. Mrs. Williams retired from The Greenbrier in November of 1991 following more than 35 years of service. She was a member of The Laborers International Union of North America Local 1182, a member of Greenbrier Valley Medical center’s Senior Citizens and a former member of Carnation Chapter No. 9, Order of the Eastern Star. She graduated in the class of 1936 from Bolling High School and held membership in the Bolling Alumni Association as corresponding secretary. She was noted for her civil services to the community among which was the "‘Honor of the Year 2002" award on behalf of the thousands of hospitalized veterans throughout the United States, the Help Hospitalized Veterans organization, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by: her first husband, Clarence Miller, Sr. and her second husband, Warren G. Williams, Sr.; son, Michael P. Williams; sister, Dora K. Miller; and brother, Samuel Kelly, Jr. Survivors include: two sons, Clarence M. Miller, Jr. of Richmond, VA and Warren C. Williams, Jr. of Cerritos, CA; sisters, Sarah M. Spurlock of Charleston and Ruby J. Clarke of Lexington, KY; two foster sisters, Bernice Sears and Scharlotta Garner; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ella Dorsey and Carl Renick. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Marguerite Jane Berkley Swoveland
Hilldale-Marguerite Jane Berkley Swoveland, 61, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002 at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, following a long illness. Born Apr. 23, 1941 at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Ira Luther and Beatrice Alice Hogan Berkley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mayna Gayle Swoveland. Mrs. Swoveland was a retired cook having been employed at the Riverside Inn and the Pence Springs Hotel, retiring after 10 years. She was also a homemaker. She was a 1958 graduate of Shady Spring High School, Beaver, and attended the Pence Springs Community Church, Pence Springs. Mattie R. Kinnison
Lewisburg-Mattie R. Kinnison, 91, passed away at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a long illness. Born June 5, 1911 at Spice Run, Pocahontas County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Henry and Emma Frances (Perkins) Perkins. Mrs. Kinnison received her early education in Greenbrier County and earned her Masters degree in Education from West Virginia University. She retired from her teaching career after 37 years of service in both West Virginia and Arizona. She was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and a member of Circle No. 1. She was preceded in death by: her husband, H. Guy Kinnison; brother, Joseph Mastin Perkins; and sisters, Nellie Turner and Ada Coffman. Survivors include: son, Harlan and wife, Phyllis Kinnison of Hillsboro and Kay Kinnison of Lewisburg; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons. Freddie M. Boone
Lewisburg-Freddie M. Boone, Sr., 74, passed away Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a long illness. Born May 28, 1928, in Frank-ford, he was the son of the late Evert and Edith Boone. Mr. Boone was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a mechanic, truck driver and auto parts salesman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Seldomridge Boone; and brothers, Danny and Bill Boone. Survivors include: sons, Freddie M. Boone, Jr. and wife, Jessie of Maxwelton and Lewis F. Robert Isaiah Jones
Lewisburg-Robert Isaiah "Robbie" Jones, 18, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Pocahontas County Hospital. Born Nov. 21, 1983 at Kansas City, MO, he was the son of Ronald David and Sherry Lynn Gutshall Jones. Robbie was a 2002 graduate of Greenbrier East High School. He was awarded a scholarship for soccer at Sheppard College. He attended the First Baptist Church in Fairlea and worked at Movie Starz in Lewisburg. Survivors include: his parents, Ron and Sherry Jones of Elkins; maternal grandparents, Charles and Charlotte Gutshall of Liberty, MO; paternal grandparents, Sam and Linda Jones of Rogersville, MO; and Pat Broom of Wichita, KS; and sister, Maggie Jones of Elkins. Brownie L. Gladwell
Coal City-Brownie L. "Bee" Gladwell, 93, formerly of Lewis-burg, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 in Coal City. Born in Gladwell, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Stella Gabbert Loudermilk. She was the widow of former Lewisburg Mayor Arthur R. Gladwell, who died in 1993. Mrs. Gladwell was a graduate of Lewisburg High School and Charleston Business College, and was employed by C&P Telephone Company before moving to Lewisburg where she and her late husband owned and operated Bee Jewelry Company for 25 years. She was a Past Worthy Matron of O.E.S. Chapter #108, Past President of WV O.E.S. Matron and Patrons Association, Past President of Lewisburg Business and Professional Women's Club, a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church and for many years a member of its choir and Guild Circle. Survivors include: daughter, Nancy Lee Ritchie and husband, Garry of Huntington; son, Dr. David A. Services will be Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Longanacre Funeral Home in Fort Spring with the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery, Second Creek.

White Sulphur Springs-Kathleen Marie Wilson, 46, passed away suddenly Sunday night, Aug. 11, 2002 in a Roanoke hospital after an extended battle with cancer that she seemed to be winning. Born Dec. 20, 1955, at Clifton Forge, VA, she was a daughter of William Edmond and Esther Mable Ibisch Wilson of White Sulphur Springs. A very strong and motivated person, she was valedictorian of her Greenbrier East High School Class of 1974, earned a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia, and also earned a black belt in karate. In addition to her parents, survivors include: four sisters, Joan of Baltimore, MD, Barbara Wilson of White Sulphur Springs, Ruth of Pitman, NJ, and Susan of Centreville, VA; and two brothers, Robert and Peter Wilson both of Lewisburg. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Lewis Brooks officiating. The family will receive their friends from 10 a.m. until time for the services on Saturday at the funeral home.
