Elder Golonza Wyatt Young, Sr.
White Sulphur Springs-Elder Golonza Wyatt Young, Sr. 79, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at the Charleston Area Medical Center. He was the son of the late Newton Harrison Young, Sr. and Ida Young Holmes. Elder Young was born Dec. 20, 1923 in White Sulphur Springs where he attended Bethune Graded School. He graduated from Bolling High School in Lewisburg and received an Associate of Science in General Education degree from Bluefield State College. He earned a Bachelor of Christian Ministry degree from Christian Bible College and Seminary and had many other interests including radio and television servicing, automotive tune-up and electrical systems, custom furniture upholstery, and professional/advanced locksmithing. He was a personal computer specialist, attended the Washington School of Art and graduated from the American Bible Institute with a Doctor of Divinity degree and had other Bible courses. He served in both the Army and Air Force. He was employed at The Greenbrier, serving in various positions for 25 years, retiring as a Bellman. Elder Young served in a pastoral capacity at the New Life Missionary Baptist Church in white Sulphur Springs where he preached, taught Bible classes and served in whatever capacity where he was needed, instructing and encouraging the members. He was Associate Minister and a member of the First Church Of God in Christ in White Sulphur Springs where he taught Bible Class and served in a pastoral capacity, preaching and teaching Bible Class. He also served as a Trustee. Over the years, he preached and served in a number of churches in the area including St. James Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, House of Prayer and Believers Under Grace and in other church. He had the community at heart and would say "everything is going to be all right." He was preceded in death by a daughter, Machelle Irene Young of White Sulphur Springs and all his brothers and sisters. He leaves to mourn his loss: his wife, Anita Marie Young; a son, Golonza Wyatt Young, Jr. of Deland, FL; two granddaughters, Natasha Lynette Young of White Sulphur Springs and Quana Montez Walker and her husband, Patrick Walker of Ronceverte; one grandson, Harry Lomons Ligons and his wife, Rebecca Ligons of Fairlea; four great-grandchildren, Tyshaun Walker, Juana’e Young, Mark Schoensee and Lyric Walker; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The family will receive visitors at the Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Church of God in Christ, 980 Tuckahoe Road, White Sulphur Springs on Monday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Josephine Baldwin McMillion
Renick-Josephine Baldwin McMillion, 97, passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea. Born Apr. 20, 1905, at Cordova, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Jenny Crouse Baldwin. Mrs. McMillion was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben McMillion; sister, Nina; four brothers, Philip, Verner, Lionel and Dave; and great-grandchild, Stephen. Survivors include: daughter, Inez Brown of Renick; four sons, Howard, Charles and Alden McMillion, all of Renick, and Harold McMillion of Cedar Lake, IN; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Oct. 29, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where Rev. Robert Hefner, Jr. officiated. Grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Ina B. Jenner
Temple, GA-Ina B. Jenner, 85, formerly of Sweet Springs, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 after an extended illness. Born Sept. 9, 1917 at Sweet Springs, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Elma Griffith Baker. Mrs. Jenner was a member of the Sweet Springs Baptist Church, and a retired waitress living in Temple, GA since 1975. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents was a daughter, Sue Botkin. Survivors include: daughter, Sharon Cox and her husband, Garland of Dallas, GA; three sons, Ed Goodall and wife, Lourdis of Long Beach, CA, John Goodall and wife, Donna of Plymouth, NC and Bobby Edwards and wife, Gail of Westminster, CA; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Overstreet of Richmond, VA. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Sweet Springs Baptist Church where the Rev. Bob Ratliff officiated. Burial was in the Mountainview Cemetery at Sweet Springs. Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs was in charge of the arrangements.

Elaine Virginia Deskins Vass
Sinks Grove-Elaine Virginia Deskins Vass, 74, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital of complications from a heart attack. Born Nov. 11, 1927 on the Knobs in Monroe County, she was the daughter of the late John and Allie Sarver Deskins. Mrs. Vass was a lifelong resident of Sinks Grove and was a member of Sinks Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Brown Lee Vass in 1995; and brothers, Joe in 1998, Herman in 1937 and Clyde Deskins in 1928. Survivors include: daughter, Sylvia Cook and husband, Henly of Renick; sons, Steve Deskins and wife, Brenda of Ronceverte and Rick Vass and wife, Jane of Beaver; companion, Oather Brant of Sinks Grove; brothers, Garlin Deskins and wife, Martha of Baltimore, MD and John Deskin of Fort Lauderdale, FL; sisters-in-law, Martha Vass Helvey and husband, Wade of Sinks Grove and Pat Vass of Zion, IL; six grandchildren, Edward Lee Harvey, Jr. and companion, Terry of Charlotte, NC, Melanie Wills and husband, Ray of Nimitz, Leanna Sluss and husband, Arliss of Jumping Branch, Jeffery Deskins and wife, April of Ronceverte, Detrah Deskins of Princeton and Mary Beth DeLauder and husband, Joe of Rock Hill, SC; six great-grandchildren, Crystal Meadows, Alyssa Wills, Donovan Harvey, Justin Sluss, Kaithalin Deskins and Tyler Deskin; four step-grandchildren, Cynthia Cook, Wade Cook, Wesley Cook and Megan McCoy; step-great-grandchild, Jacob Wade Cook; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Lena Karnes Feamster
Alderson-Lena Karnes Feamster, 85, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness. Born Aug. 1, 1917 in Logan, she was the daughter of the late Henry Whitten and Cora Jane Smith Karnes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband of 64 years, George Samuel Feamster, Sr. on May 20, 2002; daughter, Martha M. Feamster; two brothers, Henry Whitten Karnes, Jr. and Kyle Anderson Karnes; and four grandchildren. Mrs. Feamster was a homemaker. She was a 1936 graduate of Alderson High School, Alderson, and was a member of the Alderson Presbyterian Church, Alderson. Survivors include: four sons, Frank Feamster and wife, Susan of Nags Head, NC, Richard Feamster of Gloucester, VA, Henry Feamster and wife, Sonnie of Ronceverte, and George S. Feamster, Jr. and wife, Sandy of Hinton; four daughters, Marjorie Sharp of Grafton, Mary Phillips and husband, Jim of Forest City, NC, Rebecca Loudermilk and husband, Donald of Frankford, and Rachel Goodall and husband, Kenneth of Alderson; 14 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Deana M. Armstrong officiating. Mary Ruth Andrews
Alderson-Mary Ruth Andrews, 97, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at the home of her cousin in Arlington, VA, following a sudden illness. Born Dec. 30, 1904 in Sharon, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Milton and Della Ewart Andrews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death be a sister, Josephine Andrews Farmer. Miss Andrews was a retired teacher having retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Alderson, and was also a former school teacher in southern West Virginia. She was a 1923 graduate of Alderson High School and attended Alderson Junior College. She graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and received a Masters degree in mathematics from Duke University. Miss Andrews was a member of the Alderson Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Association of University Women, Phi MU Fraternity, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Greenbrier Historical Society, and the Alderson Womans Club. Miss Andrews is survived by several cousins. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Deana M. Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson. Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.

Aldine Beery Darnell
Lewisburg-Aldine Beery "Curly" Darnell, a longtime Lewisburg resident, passed away Oct. 22, 2002, at the age of 92. She was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Dewitt A. Beery. Rev. Beery was at one time pastor of the Lewisburg Methodist Church. Born in Summit Point, Mrs. Darnell lived as a child in a number of towns and cities in West Virginia and Virginia, where her father was called as minister. She graduated from Emory and Henry University in 1930 and subsequently worked as a laboratory technician at the University of Virginia hospital in Charlottesville as part of the medical team that discovered the blood-clotting properties of vitamin K. She married Dr. Leslie M. Lisle in 1933 and they had two children, Leslie and Beth. This marriage ended in divorce. She was the widow of Joseph Marion Darnell, also of Lewisburg, whom she married in 1961. Mrs. Darnell taught English and psychology for several years at Greenbrier college in Lewis-burg and after that was head librarian of the Greenbrier County Library in the same city. In the 1950s she was Director of Religious Education for the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church in Charlottesville, VA. Mrs. Darnell was known for her gentle nature, her willingness to help others and her great love of singing. She is survived by two children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service was held Oct. 26, in the Little Fork Episcopal Church in Rixeyville, VA. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Greenbrier County Library in Lewisburg.

Jack Duane Thompson
Alderson-Jack Duane Thompson, 67, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the home of his sister in Alderson, following a long illness. Born June 10, 1935, at Wolf Creek, he was the son of the late James Ralph and F. Evelyn Pittenger Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a retired carpenter. He was a 1953 graduate of Alderson High School and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He was a member of local Union No. 1911 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Thompson Perry. Survivors include: daughter, Kathy S. Withrow and husband, Shawn of Lewisburg; granddaughters Madison and Bailey Withrow of Lewisburg; sisters, Vera A. Thompson of Columbus, OH, and Elizabeth R. Thompson of Jensen Beach, FL; brothers, James Paul, Edward L. and Ralph D. "Bud" Thompson, all of Alderson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Oct. 22, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson where the Rev. Frank Jones officiated. Burial was in the Thompson Family Cemetery at Wolf Creek. Serving as pallbearers were family and friends.

Charles Wayne Alexander
White Sulphur Springs-Charles Wayne Alexander, 44, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA, after an extended battle with cancer. Born Oct. 6, 1958, at White Sulphur Springs, he was the son of Vernie Ruth Morris Alexander of White Sulphur Springs and the late Glen Robert Alexander. Mr. Alexander was a self-employed logger and was a member of the Glace Presbyterian Chapel at Glace. In addition to his mother, survivors include: his companion, Patty Boggs of White Sulphur Springs; daughters, Erica Alexander and Charlene Alexander, both of White Sulphur Springs; three sisters, Wanda Dowdy and husband, Phillip of White Sulphur Springs, Robin Terry and husband, Toney and Margaret Cook and husband, Jeff, all of Covington, VA; two nieces, Allie Dowdy and Chelsea Cook; and two nephews, Phillip Dowdy and Robert Cook. Funeral services were held Oct. 21, in the Glace Presbyterian Chapel at Glace where the Rev. Emory Hoke officiated. Burial followed in the Feury Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs. Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs was in charge of the arrangements.

Bessie E. Wood Humphreys
Alderson-Bessie E. Wood Humphreys, 72, formerly of Baltimore, MD, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at her home in Alderson from natural causes. Born June 6, 1930, at True, she was the daughter of the late Henry D. and Annie Hill Wood. Mrs. Humphreys was a retired payroll clerk having retired from Olin Chemical Corporation, Baltimore, MD. She was a 1949 graduate of Talcott High School and was a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Humphreys; and a brother. Survivors include: daughter, Judith Stacks and husband, David of Aberdeen MD; three grandchildren, Kim Rivera of Belcamp, MD, and Becky Stacks and Eddie Stacks, both of Aberdeen, MD; two sisters; three brothers; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Oct. 23, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson where the Rev. Earl Snuffer officiated. Burial was in the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Mary Agnes Forren Hayes
Lewisburg-Mary Agnes Forren Hayes, 81, passed away on Monday, Oct. 21, 2002 at Charleston Area Medical Center. Born Jan. 7, 1921 at Ronceverte, she was the daughter of Lonnie and Dora Forren. Mrs. Hayes worked as a bookkeeper for Agnew Joseph Construction Company and retired from the Greenbrier County Board of Education. She was an active member of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, serving as circle chairman and the Chairman of the Spiritual Enrichment Committee, Council for Presbyterian Women. She was awarded a lifetime membership for her service to Presbyterian Women. Mrs. Hayes was also an active member of the Greenbrier County Retired School Service Association, having served as its president. Survivors include: her husband, Joe Blackburn Hayes; son Joe Blackburn Hayes, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Barbara, and grandson, Jay; and daughters, Carol Cales and Linda Hayes, all of Lewisburg; brother, Walter Forren and wife, Libby of Charlottesville, VA; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Old Stone Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg.

Kendall L. Wilson, Sr.
Lewisburg-Kendall L. Wilson, Sr., formerly of Marion, MD, died at home in Lewisburg Oct. 23, 2002. He was 87-years-old. He was born in 1915 on a farm at Burnettesville, near Marion, MD. He was the son of John Coulbourne Wilson, Sr. and Harriet Williams Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a graduate of Marion High School where he was considered to be a star baseball catcher—being extremely accurate in his throws from home plate to second base. Later, he played that position for several years with the Eastern Shore Baseball League. In his early years, he became active in Maryland State politics, primarily through his long friendship with schoolmate, Miles Tull, Maryland’s youngest Secretary of State. The sudden death of Tull ended a strong group in Democratic politics in the area at the time. He remained active in state politics at the country level throughout his life as long as he was living in Somerset County. For the last five years, he had been living with his son, Kendall, Jr., in Lewisburg. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 44 years, Sally Lawson Wilson in 1991; four brothers, Horace, John C. Jr. Leonard and Woodrow T. Wilson; and sisters, Hilda Smith, Ethel Massey and Mildred Hart. He is survived by: a son, Dr. Kendall L. Wilson, Jr., of Lewis-burg; three granddaughters; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in Crisfield, MD on Saturday, Oct. 26. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Cemetery near Crisfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions of sympathy may be made to the Fairlea Rescue Squad and/or Greenbrier Valley Hospice. Local arrangements are being handled by the Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

Nancy Katherine Houck Murdock
Midway-Nancy Katherine Houck Murdock, 79, formerly of Scranton, PA, and Alderson, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2002, at her home in Midway, following a short illness. Born Feb. 6, 1923, at Sophia, she was the daughter of the late Luke Mason and Virginia Elizabeth Houck. Mrs. Houck was a retired licensed practical nurse, having retired from the hospital in Scranton, PA, after 20 years of service. She attended Mark Twain High School and was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orla Clifford Murdock; son, Richard Henry Murdock; and three brothers, Henry Alexander, Glen Charles and Mason Dixon Houck. Survivors include: daughters, Mary Etta Murdock of Midway and Connie Susan Adams and husband, Robert, of Lewisburg; brother, Baxter McLinden Houck of Mabscott; three sisters, Mary Alice Kinsley and husband, Dave of Midway, Betty Jo Miklovic of Hereford, AZ, and Ruth Eller Barrett of Chester, VA; five grandchildren, James Richard Flannery of Columbus, OH, John Joseph Flannery of Richmond, VA, Michael T. Flannery and Cindi Britt of Dameron, Dawn Granier of Oceanside, CA, and Jason Kohut of Scranton, PA; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson with the Rev. Fonnice Murdock officiating. Forest Beuford Hoover
Fresno, CA-Forest Beuford Hoover, 76, formerly of Greenbrier County, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Fresno, CA. Born Oct. 21, 1926, at Kingston, he was the son of the late Forest B. and Ruby Hoke Hoover. Mr. Hoover was a World War II Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Robert and John Hoover; and two sisters, Virginia Stone and Jean Grady. Survivors include: daughter, Vicky Whitt of Lewisburg; four sons, Jerry Hoover of Frankford, and Tim Hoover, David Hoover and Robert Hoover, all of Fresno, CA; two sisters, Margie Frame of Rainelle and Carolyn Ratliff of Lewisburg; four brothers, Melvin Hoover and Jim Hoover, both of Lewisburg, Bill Hoover of Asbury and Kenneth Hoover of Sutton; six granddaughters; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Ronceverte Baptist Church, Ronceverte, with the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Arrangements are by Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home.

Waukee Mae Hunter Sweetwood
Lake Alfred, FL-Waukee Mae Hunter Sweetwood, 88, formerly of Alderson and Mims, FL, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Lake Alfred, FL, following a short illness. Born Aug. 12, 1914 in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Ada Lloyd Hunter. Mrs. Sweetwood was the last survivor of 15 children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Arnold Sweetwood, Sr.; son: Karl Arnold "Jim" Sweetwood, Jr.; and 14 brothers and sisters. She is survived by: daughter, Marjorie Sweetwood Witcher and husband, Richard of Lake Alfred, FL; son, C.K. Sweetwood and wife, Mary Elizabeth of Kansas City, MO; daughter-in-law, Barbara Sweetwood of Ronceverte; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Private burial will be in Alderson Cemetery. Harold Lee Wood
Caldwell-Harold Lee Wood, 74, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a long illness. Born Jan. 15, 1928 in Caldwell, he was the son of the late William A. Wood and Ettamae Wood Graddick. As a child Mr. Wood attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Caldwell. In his later years he attended the Grassy Meadows Gospel Lighthouse Church. He was a former employee of the Ford Motor Company in Parma, OH and was a caddie at The Greenbrier for many years. He was preceded in death by his second wife Gail Williams Wood. Survivors include: brothers, Bane Wood of Homersville, OH and William Kemper Wood and wife, Shirley of Columbia Station, OH; and caregivers, Keith and Billy Jean Bryant of Rupert. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m., at McCraw Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William "Dutch" LeGrand and the Rev. Dr. Walter Lee Wood, Jr. officiating. Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Thomas Anthony Carter
Ronceverte—Thomas Anthony Carter, one month and eight days old, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 in the Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Charleston after a short illness. Born Sept. 15, 2002 in Charleston, he was the son of Mark Wayne and Traci Annette Crump Carter of Ronceverte. Survivors include: his parents, Mark and Traci Carter of Ronceverte; three brothers, Christopher Lee, Mark W. II and Nathen M. Carter, all at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Boyer of Cape Canaveral, FL, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd W. Crump of Canvas, and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wayne Carter of Ronceverte; great-grandmother, Norma Jean Carter of Lewisburg and James Sizemore of Cocoa, FL. Marie Patton Coleman
Alderson-Marie Patton Coleman, 73, formerly of Charleston, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA, from injuries she sustained from a fall. Born Aug. 27, 1929 at Lawton, she was the daughter of the late Noah Layphual Burnette and Sarah Anne Harmon Burnette Grimmett. Mrs. Coleman was a seamstress and a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her first husband, Melvin L. Patton; her second husband, Charles Coleman; and six brothers, Fred, John, Layphual, Orville, Frank and Melvin Burnette. Survivors include: daughter, Sandra "Snookie" Patton Elam and husband, Robert O. Elam, Jr. of Old Hickory, TN; grandchildren, Robert Elam III of Paoli, PA and Melissa L. Elam of Nashville, TN; sisters, Hattie Burnette Painter of Meadow Bridge and Della May Grimmett Coberly and husband, Jim of Lambertville, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Oct. 15, at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson where the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiated. Burial was in the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson. Minnie Louise Weikle
Alderson-Minnie Louise Weikle, 60, passed away Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long illness. Born Mar. 29, 1942 in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Etta Burns Terry. Mrs. Weikle was a lifelong resident of Alderson. She was retired from BF Goodrich and was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: son, Joseph Weikle; and five brothers, Elmer, Walter, Richard, Wesley and Lacy Terry. Survivors include: her husband, Donald G. Weikle of Alderson; four daughters, Novelee Morgan of Ronceverte, Nutenna Weikle and Janet Buckland both of Alderson and April Weikle of Newport News, VA; four sons, Robert Terry, Tim Terry and Donald Weikle, Jr. all of Alderson and Benjamin Weikle of Meadow Bridge; sisters, Dreama Hylton and Ella Weikle both of Alderson; brother, Charles Terry of Maryland; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services were held Oct. 15, at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring, where the Rev. David Spencer officiated. Burial followed in the Mount Vernon Cemetery, Fort Spring.

Raymond L. Pettyjohn, Jr.
Lewisburg-Raymond L. Pettyjohn, Jr., 72, passed away Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. Born June 11, 1930 in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late Raymond L. and Minnie Roberts Pettyjohn, Sr. Mr. Pettyjohn was a former member of the Odd Fellows and Lions Clubs. He served a term in the U.S. Marine Corps and was retired from the Hanover Shoe Factory in White Sulphur Springs and Middletown, MD. He had worked with the Hughes Network System in German-town, MD. While living in Lewisburg, he worked with the Colonial Ford dealership. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dale. Survivors include: his wife, Mildred Gottshall Pettyjohn; four daughters, Donna Fulker-son of Lancaster, PA, Diane Rose of Ronceverte, Debbie Wheaton of Inwood and Dawn Razzaghinejad of Mount Airy, MD; three sons, R. Allen Pettyjohn of Ephrata, PA, Terry Pettyjohn of Beckley and Mark Pettyjohn of Middletown, MD; sister, Joyce Loercher of Lititz, PA; brothers, Russell Pettyjohn of Lititz and Warren Pettyjohn of Red Lion, PA; 19 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Services were held Oct. 16, at the Richard H. Heisey Funeral Home in Lititz. PA. Burial was in the Moravian Cemetery in Lititz, PA. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of the local arrangements.

Nanna Belle Cochran
Lewisburg-Nanna Belle Cochran, 92, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 in Upper Chesapeake Medical Center at Bel Air, MD. Born July 20, 1910 at Cordova, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Priscilla Grose Workman. Mrs. Cochran was a homemaker and was selected as the Mountain Messenger's "Mother of the Year" in 1987. She was preceded in death by her husband, Taft Cochran on Sept. 25, 1977. Survivors include: four daughters, Wanda Taylor of Rising Sun, MD, Barbara Smith and husband, Jack of Baltimore, MD, Vera Ingool and husband, Ronald of Cardiff, MD, and Carol Reid and husband, Pete of Clifton Forge, VA; five sons, William J. "Bill" Cochran and wife, Helen of Forest Hill, MD, Ralph Cochran and wife, Janet of Bel Air, MD, Melvin Cochran and wife, Janet of Havre de Grace, MD, Marshall Cochran and wife, Evelina of Frankford, and Gary Cochran and wife, Debbie of Frankford; three sisters, Flora Scott of Edgewood, MD, Ivy Corbett of Whiteford, MD, and Texas Adams of York, PA; brother, Fred Workman of Lewisburg; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Oct. 17, at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Frankford where Pastor Marshall Cochran officiated. Burial followed in the Old Droop Church Cemetery near Hillsboro. Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg was in charge of the arrangements.

M. Annie McBride Edds
Alderson-M. Annie McBride Edds, 85, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center , Fairlea, following a long illness. Born Nov. 14, 1916 at Ellison, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Philena Arabelle Farley McBride. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Audrey Lewis Edds on Jan. 4, 2002; brother, Drewry McBride; sisters, Icie Gentry and Lessie Meadows; and great-granddaughter, Lindsey Nichols. Mrs. Edds was a homemaker and a member of the Flat Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Alderson. Survivors include: daughter, Shirley A. Nichols and husband, Larry of Alderson; son, A. Nathan Edds and wife, Carol of White Oak; sister, Bonnie Mills of Shady Spring; three brothers, Johnny McBride of Ohio, Spurgeon McBride of White Oak and Emory McBride of Nashville, NC; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service were held Oct. 18, at the Flat Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Flat Mountain Road, Alderson where Pastor Dave Spencer and Rev. Nathan Adkins officiated. Burial was in the Edds Family Cemetery on Flat Mountain, Alderson. Serving as pallbearers were: Thomas Nichols, Larry Nichols, Jr., Nathan Edds, Jr., Patrick Edds, Dennis Workman and C.J. Smith. Ruth Virginia Persinger
Charlottesville, VA-Ruth Virginia Persinger, 78, passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, in a local nursing home. Mrs. Persinger was a former resident of Ronceverte. She resided there for 50 years. Born Sept. 15, 1924, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Blaine and Laura Jane Bennett Lilly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Gordon D. Persinger; sister, Loreene Frogale; and brothers, Dale and Ray Lilly. She was a retired lighting decorator. She was also an active volunteer for the 4-H, the Girl Scouts, and the American Cancer Society. She bred and trained AKC Yorkshire Terriers and Pomeranians. Survivors include: daughter, Jane P. Birckhead of Charlottesville, VA; granddaughter, Ashley Birckhead; numerous nieces and nephews; her faithful pet, "Molly"; sister, Sandra Gillespie; and brother, Andrew Lilly. A graveside funeral service was conducted Sept. 25 in Monticello Memory Gardens. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Char-lottesville Albermarle S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 7047, Charlottesville, VA 22906. Teague Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Elta S. Bland
Ronceverte-Elta S. Bland, 42, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division. Born July 12, 1960 at Cleveland, OH, she was the daughter of Edgar E. and Marguerite Scott. Mrs. Bland was a checker at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include: her husband, David L. Bland; daughter, Robin Honaker of Ronceverte; son, James Honaker of Ronceverte; brother, Todd Scott of Ronce-verte; niece, Tia Scott of Crows, VA; and special friends, Tondi Holt of North Carolina and Doug Wickline of Ronceverte. Services were held Oct. 11, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg where Rev. Robert Hefner, Jr. officiated. Burial was in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Memorial donations may be made to the First National Bank Savings in Elta Bland's name.

Roger William Hull, Sr.
Lewisburg-Roger William Hull, Sr., 55, formerly of White Sulphur Springs, passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, following a brief illness. Born Dec. 28, 1946 at Alvon, he was a son of Glenna Hull Pauley of White Sulphur Springs and the late Ronald Nasby Hull, Sr. Mr. Hull was a logger and he attended the Neola Church of God, Neola. He was former assistant coach for the Midget Football Team in White Sulphur Springs. He was preceded in death by: son, Roger Hull, Jr.; and brothers, Lacy Lee and Robert Eugene Hull. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: his wife, Lilliam Adwell Hull; brother, Ronald Hull, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Caldwell; and sister, Charlotte Feury and husband, Lloyd of White Sulphur Springs. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at Shanklin Funeral Home Chapel, White Sulphur Springs with the Rev. James Estep officiating. Interment will follow at Dowdy Cemetery, Glace. The family will receive their friends Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs. The family requests expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations toward the funeral service.
