HUNTINGTON HIGH SCHOOL - HUNTINGTON, WV
CLASS OF 1927
GIRLS' BASKETBALL - SCAN
--------- Coach Clarissa Williams is the skipper of the Red and Blue basketeers and through her stable coaching they have won the high honors achieved this year. Miss Williams has been the girls' cage coach for seven years and always places first class combi? nations upon the hardwood floor. Captain Francis, leader of the high girls this year, was the stumbling block for all of the other clubs. Ray is very tall and easily got the tip-off on the other clubs, which meant quite a bit in some of their contests. Irma Jeffers, veteran forward on the Red and Blue squad, played fine on visiting courts but did not show up so well on the home court. Elenora Bick starred at the guard post this season. Elenora was captain of last year's sextet. The Pierce sisters, Lucille and Louise, were stalwart forwards on the Red and Blue and never failed to show plenty of class in any contest. Helen Poindexter had no trouble in receiving a berth on this year's fine combination after playing so well at Enslow Junior. Dorothy Poynter saw her first year of action this season after successfully playing forward on the Central sextet. Hattie Hurt displayed a whirlwind of speed this year at the guard post. "Tiny" Harmon, another yearling, started at the forward post for the Red and Blue tossers despite her small size. Marie Scarberry was a shining light at the guard position. Marie did not play the first part of the year. Hazel Sumpter, who alternated at forward and center for the high girls, ranked high among the leading scorers this year. Gladys Clark, who played on the Lincoln Junior champion six last year, saw much action at the guard post. |
