He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, was a retired research chemist from Union Carbide and helped develop the insecticide Sevin before becoming assistant director of research and development. Surviving: wife, Margaret Hammons Fitzpatrick; son, John Francis Fitzpatrick of Chappaqua, N.Y.; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fitzpatrick of Alexandria, Va.; brother, Joseph M.
