Barbara Carney Williams
United Way leader Barbara Williams dead at 63
Barbara Carney Williams, a two-term board chairwoman of the United Way of Kanawha Valley, died Saturday of liver cancer at Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Division.
Williams, 63, was known for her devotion to United Way, the Charleston Housing Authority, Make A Difference Day, Day of Caring and more.
"You'll be a better person for it," Williams often said to others when confronted with a challenge.
When United Way's National Service Center faced scandal in 1991 because an officer squandered money, Williams stepped forwardto say the local United Way was not involved.
She was one of the first in the country to withhold dues to the national group until the scandal was resolved.
Because of her stance, she was elected one of 15 people in the country to serve on the expanded board of governors for United Way of America, said Jack Blair, executive director of the local organization.
During her 15 years with United Way, Williams was a huge force in building One United Way Square and paying for it in three years, rather than the 10 it was expected to take.
Blair said he has known only two people, including Williams, in his 35 years with the United Way organization who accomplished so much for the community.
"She was not a person who did things for recognition," Blair said. "But because she felt they needed to be done."
For instance, Williams always paid for her own travel to conferences.
She was a retired staff assistant from the Social Security Administration and was a member and Sunday school teacher at West Side United Methodist Church.
She was a founder and president of the West Side Neighborhood Association and involved with Glenwood Elementary School's Family Resource Center, West Virginia Public Broadcasting, Charleston Job Corps and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. In 1997 she was one of 25 state delegates to the President's Summit for America's Future and the Governor's Summit for West Virginia's Future.

Carney of Charleston; brother, James Jackson Carney of Royal Oak, Mich.; nephews, Peter Allen and Jonathan Scott Triplett, of Charleston, Christopher Dove of Carey, N.C., Timothy Dove of Lillburn, Ga., Jeff Carney and Craig Carney of Michigan; niece, Claudia Carney of California.
