He was a Methodist, Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired regional sales manager for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. He was a Mason, a graduate of Milton (W.Va.) High School and attended Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va. Surviving: wife, Lano Johnson Blackwood; daughter, Rande Ellen Blackwood of Columbus; sister, Mary Handley of Milton. SINKS GROVE -- Clayborne Deaton Campbell, 89, of Sinks Grove died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness. He was a retired Monroe County Vocational Agriculture teacher with 30 years' service, retired dairyman and a charter member of Bluegrass Ruritan Club, Pickaway. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and Berea College, Berea, Ky. He was a member and officer of West Virginia Dairy Herd Improvement Association, West Virginia Teachers Association and attended Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Sinks Grove, where he was a former Sunday school teacher. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served on the Monroe County Board of Health and the Monroe County Health Center Board of Trustees for 29 years. Surviving: wife, Virginia Callison Campbell; daughters, Ruth Sturgill of Ronceverte, Helen Graves of Sinks Grove; sister, Ellen Eversole of Deputy, Ind.; one grandson. William B. Caruth Jr.
ATHENS -- William B. Caruth Jr., 60, of Athens, Mercer County, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, in Duke University Medical Center. He was a native of Mount Hope, W.Va., and received a bachelor's degree in music education from Concord College and a master's degree in music education from Marshall University. He was director of bands and taught music at several West Virginia schools, including Princeton junior and senior highs, Marshall University and Martinsburg High School. Since 1973, he had been assistant professor of music and director of bands at Bluefield State College. He was director of the college jazz ensemble and had performed many local concerts and other events including the West Virginia Jazz Festival. He performed with symphony orchestras in Bluefield, Huntington and Charleston, and also composed and arranged music. Surviving: brothers, James D. Caruth of Kitty Hawk, N.C., Donald T. Caruth of Athens; sisters, Nancy Vandeusen of Columbia, Md., Linda Sockriter of Harbeson, Del.; 11 nieces; two nephews; one great-nephew. He was a member of Coopers Creek Advent Christian Church, West Virginia Genealogical Society, Elkview Has Been Club, Second District Advent Christian Conference and Advent Christian General Conference, where he also served as secretary/treasurer. He was a vice president of Elk-Blue Creek Historical Society and was a graduate of Elkview High School.
