Carla Jean Lovenstein, 74, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Charleston, W.Va. died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Wake Medical Center. She was a registered nurse and member of the Cadet Nurse Corps from 1944 to 1947 at McMillian Hospital in Charleston. She was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church and the St. Raphael Church Altar Guild. Surviving: sons, Thomas L. Lovenstein of Raleigh, Larry Carl Lovenstein of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Kimberly Sue Mackey of Pittsburgh; brother, Jack Eldridge Surrette of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sisters, Marjorie Parson of Raleigh and Helen Myers of South Charleston, W.Va. He was a retired operator from Union Carbide with 32 years of service, a member of First Baptist Church, Avon Park, and was an Army veteran of World War II, where he was recipient of American Defense and Theater Ribbon, Asiatic and Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Bronze Star. Surviving: wife, Dorothy McCoy; sons, Joe McClung Jr. of Charleston, Gary McClung of Alpharetta, Ga.; daughters, Donna Price of Beckley, Barbara Slack of North Augusta, S.C., Pam Beheler of St. Albans; nine grandchildren. He was a retired bellman at the Greenbrier Hotel and was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, White Sulphur Springs. Surviving: wife, Delilah Carter Newsome; son, Louis H. Newsome of White Sulphur Springs; daughters, Alice M. Gore and Charlotte Gooch, both of White Sulphur Springs, Julia I. Newsome of Lynchburg, Va.; nine grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped in the construction of the Babcock State Park and Hawks Nest State Park Overlook. He was a minister for over 50 years. He was a native of Pond Gap, W.Va., was four-time West Virginia Fiddle Champion and was National Fiddle Champion when he was 12. Surviving: wife, Mariam Donnally; sons, Chad of Ormond Beach, David of Lake Worth; daughter, Sharon Leed; mother, Elsie Donnally of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Glennon; four grandchildren.
