He graduated from Montgomery High School and attended West Virginia Institute of Technology. Don proudly served in the United States Air Force as a fire protection and aircraft rescue specialist from 1962 to 1966. He devoted his life to the fire service, joining the Fremont Fire Department on Jan. 3, 1967, and retired in December of 1998. His retirement at the rank of fire engineer ended close to 70 years of the Nowviskie family's active fire service. Following retirement, Don continued to work part-time for the department as an operations support officer until July 2000.
His hobbies were all regulated to the fire service; he collected publications, fire-engine collectibles, photography and other memorabilia. He was a firefighter for almost his entire life. His father was fire chief in Montgomery, W.Va., and Don grew up in the fire station. From the age of 6 until he retired, he spent almost all of his time at a fire station or in fire related activities. By the age of 13, he had met all of the educational and certification requirements to be a fireman in West Virginia. Upon graduation from high school in 1960, he became a part-time fireman in Montgomery, a position he held until enlisting in the Air Force.
Don was a role model, mentor and inspiration to many. He was truly loved by all who knew him and he will sorely be missed.
Don was a member of the Fremont Firefighter Local 1689 IAFF and the St. Francis Hook and Ladder Society and was president of the Mission Valley Fire Associates, an organization that provides canteen service to southern Alameda County fire departments. He attended Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Burlingame.
Although he never married and had no children, Don was extremely close to all of the children in his immediate family and was "Uncle Buffy" to several children of his fellow firefighters. For many years, he portrayed Santa Claus at an elementary school in Fremont.
