Eleanor B. Cobbs, 83, of Scott Depot, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Teays Manor, Hurricane. She was retired from Union Carbide Corporation, Tech Center, South Charleston, a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, Scott Depot, a member of the choir and loved to play bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Cobbs, Sr.; stepdaughter, Jackie Jarrett. She is survived by her sister, Anna B. Dunlap, Scott Depot; niece Becky Elliott and her husband, Jack of Huntington; nephew Roy Dunlap and his wife, Linda of Sparta, N.J.; stepsons, Herbert L. Cobbs Jr. and his wife, Diana of Wirtz, Va., and William David Cobbs and his wife, Mary of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mr. Eads was born February 22, 1926 to the late Verlie Bertrim and Anna Belle Harris Eads. He was retired from Beth Energy after 37 years of service. He attended Cedar Grove Baptist Church, N.C., and was a Deacon at Colcord Presbyterian Church, Colcord, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George M. Joe Ingram; second husband, Carmen Guzion; grandchildren, George Eric Taylor and Denika Lynn Ingram; parents Violet and Waldo Gilkerson; brother, Cecil Gilkerson; and sisters, Mary Frances Shelton and Mayola Lanning. She is survived by her loving children, Penny Turley of Morgantown, George Ingram of Alum Creek, Pam Kanis of South Charleston, and Cindy Whanger of Charleston; grandchildren, Tracy Conaway, Midge Harper, Joellen Trippet, Matt Turley, Meredith Taylor, Janeene Foster, Jamie Whanger, George M. James R. Gwinn
James R. Gwinn, 81, of Rainelle, passed away at his home, Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, following a long illness. Born on August 3, 1920, at Quinnimont, W.Va., he was a son of the late Russell Buel and Lula Elizabeth Smith Gwinn. Mr. Gwinn was a member of the Lions Club, the Midland Trail Masonic Lodge #166, a past president of the Rainelle Golf Club, past president of the Park Board, and former Commanding officer of the 811th Ordnance of the United States Army Veteran, and served 22 years in the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Gwinn was a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Rainelle, and a former Mayor of Rainelle. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Harford Gwinn of Rainelle; two daughters, Martha Gwinn Miller of Louisville, Kent., and Patricia Gwinn Wright of Union, W.Va.; one sister, Leta May Harford of Rainelle; three grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Rainelle with the Rev. Dana Gatewood and Rev. Keith Shumaker officiating. Entombment will follow at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum in Clintonville. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Leonard Eugene Harmon, 44, of Evergreen Hills Community, Cottageville, W.Va., departed this life, Oct. 19, 2001, at his home. He was born April 1, 1957 in Sandyville, W.Va. He was a 1976 graduate of Ripley High School, and was a welder, employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways with 19 years of service. He was and active member of the Ripley Church of Christ. Surviving him are his wife of 23 years, Karen (Tolbert) Harmon; sons, Michael Tolbert Harmon, Chadwick Wade Harmon, both at home; parents, Leonard and Marie (Raines) Stultler of Ripley; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Joann Harmon of Pearisburg, Va.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith and Carl Barnett of Parkersburg, Betty (Cole) and Michael Vicra of New Bedford, MA., and Joyce and John McClain of Barnwell, S.C.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard and Maxine Tolbert of Cottageville. Service will be Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Parchment Valley Baptist Church, Ripley, with minister Clifton McLawhorn and Pastor Mark Price officiation. She was a retired school teacher from Putnam County Board of Education., a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, a graduate of Morris Harvey College and Marshall University. Helen M. Whittington Matthews, 88, of Nitro, formerly of Buffalo, died Oct. 19, 2001 at Sunbridge Care of Putnam County, following a long illness. She was born at Buffalo, December, 11, 1912, the daughter of the late Harry B. and Madie Martin Whittington. She and her late husband Joe L. Matthews were long time residents of Nitro. She was a member of Otter Branch United Methodist Church at Buffalo and attended the Nirto Nazarene Church. Survivors include, son, Donnie Joe Matthews Sr. and wife, Gay of Buffalo; grandsons, Donnie J. Matthews II and wife, Lee Ann of Buffalo, William L. "Bill" Matthews and wife, Melody of Buffalo; granddaughter, Melissa Smith and husband Deg of Buffalo; great grandson, Jacob Matthews of Buffalo; great granddaughters, Hannah Matthews of Buffalo, and Cali Ann Smith of Buffalo. Orval William Morris, 85, of Bentree, Clay County, W.Va.passed away Oct. 19, 2001 at CAMC General Hospital. Mr. Morris was born, May 7, 1916 at Bentree to the late William and Lina Harvey Morris. He was retired from Roseville Charcoal and Manufacturing Company in Bentree. He was a member of Ida Missionary Baptist Church, Bentree. He is survived by his wife, Louanna Marie Osborne Morris; daughters, Nina Morton of Bentree, Anna Adkins of Gauley Bridge, and Lynn Taylor of Fola, W.Va.; son, William J. Bill Morris of Bentree; sister, Mary Hypes of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren. Service will be Monday, Oct., 22, 2001 at 1p.m. at Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Chruch, Lizemores, W.Va. with Rev. Darrell H. Peyatt, 70, of Warren, Ohio and Craigsville, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct.18, 2001, at Forum Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio, after a long illness. He was a retired Steel Inspector for Copperweld Steel, Warren, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert, and Bill Peyatt, and one sister, Eloise Milam. He is survived by his wife, Lula Peyatt of Warren; three sons, Carson Peyatt and his wife, Kathleen of Georgia, Ray Peyatt of Warren, Roger Peyatt of Richton, Miss.; two brothers,Chester Peyatt of Warren, and Howard Peyatt of Madison Heights, Va.; three sisters, Christine Hinkle of Craigsville, W.Va., Barbara Peyatt of Warren, Ohio, and Betty Thornton of Concord, Ohio; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Nell Ray, 96 of Indian Trail, N.C., formerly of Poca, W.Va. died October 18, 2001 in Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after a long illness. Mrs. Ray was born February 8, 1905 and a member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her son, Perry J. Ray of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He was a retired warehouse manager for the Diamond Department Store and he was also retired from Wilmington Star News, Wilmington, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Guy and Gracie Belle Chandler Smith; wife, Rachel Q. Smith; children, Charlotte Jean and Gretta Lynn; brothers, Ray, Buck, Butch, Hap and Clark Smith; sisters, Leotta Jennings, Kate Burdette and Pauline Newhouse. Thomas "Tom" E. Baughan, 92, of Pratt passed away Dec. 10, 2001 at home after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Pratt. He was a retired superintendent from Pratt Public Water Works, a retired police and fire chief of Pratt. He was the owner of Baughan's Garage in Pratt. He was a member of Old Kanawha Baptist Church in Pratt. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Hannah Keeney Baughan; sister, Helen Baughan Huddleston; and brothers, William H. Baughan, Ralph H. Baughan Sr., Leonard J. Baughan. Mr. Baughan is survived by his wife Dolly Clark Baughan; sons, David C. Baughan of Gadsden, S.C., and Gary W. Baughan of Parkersburg, W.Va.; brothers; John C. Baughan of Cabin Creek, Robert L. Mrs. Beulah Gum Bolt, 88, of White Sulphur Springs passed away Dec. 10, 2001 at her home following a brief illness. She was born January 25, 1913, the youngest daughter of the late William H. and Naomi Wade Gum of White Sulphur Springs. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Coleman M. Bolt; one son, William C. Bolt; three brothers, Wilbur H., Carl A. and Arthur W. Gum; one sister, Grace Gum Trevail. Mrs. Bolt was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, White Sulphur Springs, and was an active member of Circle #2. She was also a member of the Women's Club of White Sulphur Springs for over sixty years. She is survived by two sons, John D. Bolt of Columbia, S.C., and Larry J. Bolt of White Sulphur Springs; one daughter, Louise B. Williams of Richmond, Va.; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at First Presbyterain Church, White Sulphur Springs with Rev. Ben Gurley officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.
