She was a Deaconess, Missionary, member of Queen Ester Club, Senior Choir. She was retired from C & P Telephone Company, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America Chapter #42. She leaves to mourn a loving son, Carl Bowman and his wife, Selma of Rand; three loving sisters, Gracie Wright and her husband, Rev. Lee of Fairmont, Bertha Pierce and her husband, Richard of Columbus, Ohio, and Kathleen Battle of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Weldon S. Thomas Sr. of Thorpe, and Joseph Thomas and his wife, Orvae of Buffalo, N.Y.; three grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, Charleston, with Reverend Aaron Hairston Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow. Ronda L. "Tiny" Keefer Caldwell
RAVENSWOOD - Ronda L. "Tiny" Keefer Caldwell, 31, of Ravenswood died Feb. 6, 2002, at her home. She was born January 15, 1970, daughter of Ronald Keefer of Sandyville, and the late Mary Cunningham Keefer. She was a graduate of Ripley High Class of 1989. She was employed with the GS Plastic Plant of West Virginia. She is survived by her father and stepmother, Ronald and Nina Keefer of Sandyville; one daughter, Mary Cole of Ripley; two brothers, Joseph Keefer of Silverton, Patrick Keefer of Cottageville, and a step brother, Gilbert Bond of Sandyville; three step sisters, Cindy Toney, and Missy Beaver of Sandyville, and Becky Robinson of Portland, Ohio; grandmother, Mrs. Freda Keefer of Ripley. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Reverend Jimmy Thorton officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley. CLINTON, Pa. - Leona E. Carpenter, 91, of Clinton, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Feb. 2, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Taulbee R. Carpenter; two sisters, Mildred Prack and Margaret Garrison. Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Alex Berezansky; son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Karen Carpenter; grandchildren, Alan Berezansky and wife, Tina, Susan Berezansky, Janet and Jay Carpenter; great-grandchildren, Alexander Shane and Joseph Alan Berezansky; stepgreat-grandson, Gregory Lankford. Robert E. "Bob" Clark FAYETTEVILLE - Robert E. "Bob" Clark, 80, of Fayetteville died Feb. 5, 2002, at the Beckley VA Hospital, following a long illness. Born August 8 , 1921 at Glen Jean, he was the son of the late Otie Clark and Sarah F. Lewis Clark. Mr. Clark was of the Baptist faith, a World War II (Tec4) Army veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville, and retired head furnace tapper for Union Carbide, Alloy Plant. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Clark, George Clark, and Otie Clark Jr; and four sisters, Mary Cornell, Florence Cline, Margaret Clark, and Edith Clark. He is survived by two brothers, James A. Clark of Gypsy, and Thomas H. Clark of Beckwith; a sister, Virginia A. Propps of Oak Hill; caregiving nieces, Myrna Pilato and her husband, Michael of Fayetteville, Cheryl Hines of Fayetteville, Tammie Rodriquez of Fayetteville, and Susan Mullins of Oak Hill; adopted granddaughter, Toni Pilato; and many other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mayme Zella Collins
Mrs. Mayme Zella Collins, 98, of St. Albans, formally of Clarksburg, died Feb. 6, 2002, at Smith's Care Home, Nitro, after a long illness. She was a member of Clarksburg Baptist Church, the W.C.T.U. for over 50 years, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Harland Collins. She is survived by her sons, Roger H. Collins of St. Albans, Thomas M. Collins of Nutter Fort; brother, Howard Z. Double of Sutton; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Rev. Holley B. Faulkner Jr. and Rev. Joel M. Harpold officiating. Mr. Robert Lee "Bobby" Ellis
APPLE GROVE - Mr. Robert Lee "Bobby" Ellis, 61, of Apple Grove, was born December 16, 1940 at Logan, a son of Stella Mounts Ellis of Logan and the late William Riley Ellis. He departed this life on Feb. 5, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. Mr. Ellis was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and of the Pentecostal Faith. In addition to his mother, survivors include one son, Scott Ellis and his wife Janet of Tucson, Arizona; six sisters, Betty Bates and her husband Jim of Huntington Beach, Calif., Aretta Chambers of Logan, Bess Winters and her husband Don of Mitchell Heights, Ruth Smith of Atlanta, Ga., Juanita Ellis and her husband Larry of Ripley, Linda Ely of Huntington; two brothers, James "Tiny" Ellis and his wife Kay of Stollings, Clifford "Pinky" Ellis of Ranger; two granddaughters, Haley and Sabrina Ellis. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Evans Funeral Home, Chapmanville, with Rev. Tony Vance officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill. Sylvia R. Ferguson
Sylvia R. Ferguson, 89, of St. Albans died Feb. 3, 2002, in Largo Medical Center, Largo, Fla., after a long illness. She wa retired from the State of West Virginia, where she worked in various departments, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and purchasing. She was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church, St. Albans, where she was past president of the St. Peter's United Methodist Women's Club. She was also past president of the American Legion Post #73 Ladies Auxilliary, a member of VFW Post #6418 Ladies Auxilliary, and the St. Albans Moose Lodge. She had been a resident of St. Albans since 1953. Mrs. Ferguson was preceded in death by her son, Sidney Hess. She is survived by her husbad, Walter Ferguson; her children, Rosalie Bryant of DeLand, Fla., Delilah Fann of Custer, Wash., Cheryl Trapp of Mississippi and Linda Selbe of Charleston; her grandchildren, Marsha Holmes of Dunbar, Nancy Jenkins of Nitro, and David Hess of Scott Depot; ten great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. Glenva Casto Garrett
Glenva Casto Garrett, 91, of Charleston died Feb. 5, 2002, in St. Francis Hospital following a short illness. Glenva was born Sept. 4, 1910, at Belgrove, Jackson County, a daughter of the late William C. and Hettie Jane Chancey Casto. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Delmer and Carl Casto; two sisters, Ada Casto Stalnaker and Tressie Casto Smith. Glenva was a retired employee of the old F.W. Woolworth Store on Capitol Street. She was a member of Southridge Church of God, formerly First Church of God on Main Street, Charleston. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 131, South Charleston. Glenva is survived by her husband of 68 years, Denver C. Garrett; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Sue Garrett of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandsons, Bruce Garrett Jr. of Cross Lanes, Pat and Anne Garrett of Wake Forest, N.C., Matt Garrett of Charleston, S.C.; two great-granddaughters, Shannon Marie and Caroline Sue Garrett, both of Wake Forest; one sister, her only surviving sibling of eight children, Ruby Casto Hill of Charleston; a host of nieces and nephews. She was a member of Satellite Beach United Methodist Church, Florida. She is survived by her husband, Carl Matheny of Florida; son, C. William C. "Cotton" Morrison Sr.
William C. "Cotton" Morrison Sr., 75, of Charleston died Feb. 2, 2002, in Heartland of Charleston after a long illness. He had been a resident of Charleston since 1948 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed a a chef by the Daniel Boone Hotel for 16 years and later went to work for FMC and Union Carbide. In 1972, Appalachian Power Company employed him as a lineman and after 23 years of faithful employment, he retired in 1995. He was a foster parent for Kanawha County Human Service for 28 years and opened his home to over 50 children. Bill was preceded in death by his daughters, Nora Kay Robinson and Rachael Lynn Morrison; his parents, William and Effie Morrison; two sisters, Louise and Eleanor Morrison; two brothers, Nathaniel and John Paul Morrison. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise "Peaches" of Charleston; three daughters, Jacqueline Jones of Dunbar, Vanessa Morrison of Detroit, Mich., Tiffany Morrison of Charleston; three sons, William C. Morrison Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Timothy Morrison of Beaumont, Texas, Anthony Morrison of Smithers; brother, Paul Morrison of Charleston; three foster daughters, Vanessa, LaToya and Mariah Fountain of Charleston; foster son, Andre Shelton of Charleston; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends. Mary Jane Adkins Rutledge, 70, a 41 year resident of Dunbar, formerly of Yawkey, passed away Feb. 5, 2002, at her home, after a seven year battle with Lymphoma. She was a christian and former employee of the Diamond Department Store. She was predeceased by her parents, Romie and Martha Adkins; brothers, Frank D. Adkins and Fred Adkins. Mrs. Rutledge is survived by her husband, Hobert N. Rutledge; brothers, Jim P. Adkins, and Calvin Adkins, both of Florida, Bill Adkins of Davis Creek, Bob Adkins of McCorkle, Terry Adkins of Alum Creek; sister, Rose Shaffer of Manassas, Va. Nelma G. Stump
ORMA - Nelma G. Stump, 73, of Orma died Feb. 3, 2002, at Roane General Hospital. She was born June 2, 1928, the daughter of the late Cecil R. and Nell Arnold Jarvis. She was a member and former superintendent of the Minnora Prudence Chapel Church. Se retired from Kellwood Company in 1990. She was instrumental in establishing the clothing mission in Orma and had been active in volunteer work in the community. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Butch McKinley; and two sisters, Bernice Cornn and Kathy Jarvis. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Vance Stump; a daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Ed Hicks of Chloe and Donald Jarvis of Phoenix, AZ; seven sisters, Betty Smith and Jean Holmes, both of Mesa, AZ, Hope Schoolcraft of Orma, Helen Burns of Elizabeth, Alice Conley of Lynco, Donnie King of Ripley, and Connie Rucker of Diamond; four grandchildren, Wendy Manns, Chuck Hicks, Shelley Goad, and Julie Vineyard; and eleven great grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Timothy Hickman officiating. Interment will be in the Minnora Cemetery. John Burton Taylor
John Burton Taylor, 67, of Clendenin died Feb. 5, 2002, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born August 27, 1934 to the late Joe and Emma Wright Taylor. He was also preceded in death by his son, Gerald "Buzz" Taylor; sister, Clara Williams, and infant siblings, Artie and Gladys Taylor. He is survived by his companion, Phyllis Taylor; brothers, L.H. Paul L. Allen
Paul L. Allen, 74, of Scott Depot died quietly June 2, 2002, at his home after a short illness. He was born Jan. 1, 1928, in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late John W. and Grace Kelly Allen. He was also preceded in death by a brother, David Allen; and a sister, Mary Jane Allen. After graduating from Central High School, Paul enlisted in the Marine Corps. Upon being discharged from the Marines in 1948, he earned a business degree from Bliss College. Paul was a World War II veteran and a former member of Masonic Lodge 637. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Lakeland, Fla., and a former member of Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, Hurricane. Paul was self-employed for 28 years as owner and distributor of Electro-Hygiene Company, located in Spring Hill. Paul had two children from a previous marriage and four stepchildren with his wife, Lois Ketchum Allen. Paul is survived by his wife, Lois Ketchum Allen of Scott Depot; brother, Joseph Allen of Sebring, Fla.; sister, Rosemary Lindsey of New Mexico; daughters, Carole Ann Magner of Washington state, Debbie Sue Allen of Indiana; four grandchilren, Bo Morfing, Nicholas Morfing, Grady Magner and Lidnsey Magner; seven nieces and nephews.
