Bonnie Hoover Barnette
SUTTON - Bonnie Hoover Barnette, 83, of Sutton, W.Va., died Nov. 9, 2002, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, W.Va., following a short illness. She was born March 4, 1919, in Sutton, W.Va., the daughter of the late O.K. and Augusta Halstead Hoover. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Laley Barnette; daughter, Nancy Barnette Crowder; grandson, Todd Gibson; brothers, Randy, Edward and Ray Hoover; and sisters, Ethel Hoover Bonnet and Josephine Hoover Facemire. She was a homemaker, a self-employed store owner and she worked 20 years at Martin's IGA. Mrs. Barnette was a member of Fairview Missionary Baptist Stump Chapel Church for 65 years, where she was a member of the church choir. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and she graduated from Sutton High School in 1938 She is survived by three sons, Lennie Barnette and wife, Sharon, of Point Pleasant, W.Va., Gary Barnette of Charleston, W.Va., Johnny Barnette of Tesla, W.Va.; two daughters, Karen Barnette Collins of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Barbara "Bobbi" Barnette Gibson of Sutton, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Arthur Barnette of Tesla, W.Va.; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Fairview Missionary Baptist Stump Chapel Church, Tesla, W.Va., with the Rev. Linn Schlefer officiating. Burial will be in Meadow Hill Cemetery, Tesla, W.Va. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Russell Arvard Bell
Russell Arvard Bell, 83, of South Charleston passed away Nov. 8, 2002, after a short illness. He was retired from Union Carbide. He was a member of Indian Fork Primitive Baptist Church, Culloden. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1939 to 1945, and was awarded a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. He was called back to service during the Korean War, serving 18 months. He was an avid golfer in the Kanawha Valley and won the first Golf Championship at Big Bend Golf Course in 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents, Romie and Ida Bell; and his sister, Genevieve Bell McDaniel. Russell is survived by his wife, Ada Bell; daughter, Kathy Jane Ferrell and her husband, Allen, of Vienna; sister, Fannie Bell Beane of South Charleston; brother, Ronald E. Bell of Friendswood, Texas; grandchildren, James Russell Ferrell and Amy Marie Ferrell, both of Vienna; several nieces and nephews. Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Elder Willard Bird and Elder Lewis Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Teays Hill Cemetery, St. Albans. Christine Hope Samples Carte, 75, of Clendenin died in Holland's Care Home, Cross Lanes, after a long illness. She was born April 1, 1927, in Clendenin, daughter of the late Oscar and Nona Taylor Samples. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burley Carte; sons, Roger and Gregory; sisters, Juanita Clemmer, Garnet Cobb and Doris Sears; and brother, Arthur Samples. She had attended West Union Methodist Church and retired from Charleston General Hospital. She is survived by sons, Burl of Charleston, Rodney of New York, Joe of Seattle, Wash., Keith of Charleston and Stephen V. of Clendenin; daughters, Rebecca Battus of Colorado, Melinda Taylor of Utah; sisters, Gaye Morrison and Maxine Faye Pendola, both of Clendenin. WHITESVILLE - Ray J. Charles, 74, of Whitesville died Nov. 9, 2002. He was a veteran and a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Beckley. Born March 28, 1928, at Montcoal, he was the son of the late Myrtle and Jim Charles. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Dean. He is survived by brothers, Chris of Amelia Court House, Va., Terry of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Phyllis Scarbro of Conover, N.C., Alice Romine of Port Aransas, Texas, Irene Ghiz of Hurricane. Alton P. Cisco, 72, of Charleston died Nov. 8, 2002, in CAMC General Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Sisco was a former employee of Asbury's Barber Shop, Charleston, the West Virginia Department of Highways and the N&W Railroad. He was an Army veteran of Korea and a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans and Trinity United Methodist Church, Charleston. Mr. Cisco was also a member of Masonic Lodge 20, AF&AM, Scottish Rite bodies, Order of the Eastern Star Tiskelwah Chapter 45, Royal Order of Scotland and Beni Kedem Shrine, all of Charleston. Surviving are his wife, Melissa D. Cisco; daughter, Teresa Cisco of Charleston; several nieces and nephews. HUNTINGTON - Matthew Wade Kirk, 19, of Huntington died Nov. 7, 2002. Matthew was born May 5, 1983, in Charleston, W.Va. He was a 2002 graduate of Huntington High School and was attending Marshall University. He was listed in Who's Who Among High School Students and was a member of the JROTC. He was formerly employed by Moses Honda. His grandparents, Wade and Violet Kirk, preceded him in death. Matthew is survived by his mother, Sherry Lafferty Mazella of Huntington; his father, Roger D. ALKOL - Izola Evelyn Ryan Meadows, 80, of Alkol, Lincoln County, went home to Heaven Nov. 9, 2002, from her residence following a long illness. She was born Aug. 11, 1922, a daughter of Jessie Ryan of Hurricane and the late Robert D. Ryan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis P. "Slim" Meadows; and grandson, Paul Lee Miller. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Alkol. Izola was a member of Sycamore Grove Baptist Church, Alkol. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Louise Griffith of Alkol, Judy and Rudy Priestley of Hurricane; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Jr. and Sue Ryan of Scott Depot; two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Paul R. and Caroline Meadows of Ona, Senior Master Sgt. Robert R. and Jayne Meadows of Charles Town; three daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Lee and Roger Richmond of Alkol, Rhonda "Susie" Holeston of Alum Creek, Kathy Lynn Byrd of Sod; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors. He was also an employee of Walmart. He was preceded in death by his father, Dannel M. Noel I. Surviving are his wife, Sarah L. Shafer Noel of Amma; son, Chad A. Noel of Clendenin; daughter, Elysha S. Noel at home; mother, Doris Uldrich Noel of Clendenin; sister, Betty Noel Collier of Church Hill, Tenn.; grandchld, Tucker I. Elsie Mae Pittman
In the comfort of her home, surrounded by her children, Elsie Mae Pittman, 95, of Charleston peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 8, 2002. She was born Oct. 26, 1907, the daughter of the late Granville and Dora Kelly. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; sons, Frank and Paul; and daughters, Helen and Lena. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, a true Christian and was a lifelong member of Maple Hill Baptist Church. She will be sadly missed by the entire community. Everyone called her "Grandma." She is survived by daughters, Elsie Sizemore, Inza Morton, Macel Shaffer and Mildred Crowder, all of Charleston, Carol Vaughan of Summerville, S.C.; sons, Ralph and Joseph Pittman, both of Charleston, Clarence Pittman of Salem, Ohio; sister, Alice Matheny of Charleston; brother, Everett Kelly of Canton, Ohio; 20 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. John Brian Price
John Brian Price, 41, of Charleston died Nov. 8, 2002, in Tarpon Springs, Fla., after a short illness. He had been employed by Syscan Inc. and was a 1979 graduate of Charleston High School. John enjoyed his life, especially his sports. He was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the West Virginia Mountaineers and most recently became a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. John was most happy when he was watching or listening to a game. He was a special person to us all and he always was more concerned about others than himself. We should all strive to be more like John. He is survived by his sister, Karen Price of Charleston; brothers and a sister-in-law, Tom and Catherine Price of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Mike and Brad Price, both of Charleston, Randy Price of Elkins; sisters-in-law, Donna Price and Toni Estep, both of Charleston. Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Baptist Temple, Charleston, with Dr. Dennis Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. John wanted to provide a safe place for the children of Baptist Temple and Charleston's East End to enjoy the sport that he so enjoyed during his life. Jean Schmidt, 88, of South Charleston went to be with her Lord and Savior Nov. 10, 2002. Jean attended Charleston schools and Sullins College, Bristol, Va. She was an avid homemaker, active in her church with the gift of hospitality and she loved politics. She was born Oct. 5, 1914, in Charleston, daughter of the late David L. and Altha Valeria Salisbury. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Douglas Schmidt; brother, Emerson W. Salisbury; ans sister, Beulah Lucas. Jean was a loving Christian wife, mother, granny and friend. She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Helen and Ed Carpenter and Doug and Mary Lou Schmidt; five grandsons, Craig, Dean, Chris, Tony and Mark Romeo; two granddaughters, Jordin and Whitney Schmidt; 10 great-grandchildren, Geoffrey, Joey, Gabriella, Stefan, Vincente, Maria, Joshua, Marcella, Dominic and Madalynn Romeo; and one niece, Phyllis Shawver. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Fifth Avenue Church of God, South Charleston, with Pastor Rod Campbell officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston. Memorials and thoughts of sympathy may be made to the Building Fund of the church she loved and where she was a faithful servant, the Fifth Avenue Church of God. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends, but we rejoice that now she has received her reward and will experience no more pain or suffering and will be united with her loved ones who have preceded her. The family wishes to express sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff and caregivers at SunBridge for the loving care they provided for our mother.
