Ruby Lillian Shaffer, 88, of Chesapeake went home to be with the Lord Nov. 8, 2002, in Marmet Health Care Center. Mrs. Shaffer was a native of Putnam County and was preceded in death by her husband, Holly Shaffer; and two sons, Ralph and Raymond Shaffer. Mrs. Shaffer was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and Painter Bethel Church, Poca, and attended Marmet Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by one daughter, Ellen Smith of Chesapeake; three sisters, Jessie Barnette of Dunbar, Mary Young and Judy McLaughlin, both of Nitro; three Brothers, Junior R. Bailey of Nitro, Tommy E. Bailey of Rock Branch, William S. Bailey of Red House; four grandsons; two stepgranddaughters; four great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; one great-great-grandson; and several stepgreat- and stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Larry Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Lee Hyer Sutton
RICHWOOD - Lee Hyer Sutton, 92, of Richwood died Nov. 10, 2002, in Richwood Area Medical Center, Richwood, after a short illness. He was an elder of Richwood Christian Church and a member of various civic organizations. He was the founding president of the Richwood AARP Chapter, past Nicholas County magistrate, past executive secretary of the Richwood Chamber of Commerce, past mayor of Richwood, president of the Five to Ten Year Long-Range Planning Council for Richwood and co-chairman of the South Fork of Cherry River Dam Project. He was a retired self-employed electrical contractor and the chief electrician for Cherry River Boom and Lumber Company, Richwood, with 27 years of service. He was a volunteer for both the Richwood Head Start and for RSVP. He was preceded in death by is wife, Gladys Sutton; and daughter, Dorothea Morris. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John Dean of Decatur, Ala., Patricia and Woody Sweeker of Daily; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Richwood Christian Church, Richwood, with Pastor Eugene Losch officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwoood. Albert Wayne Townsend II, 22, of Cross Lanes died Nov. 8, 2002, of injuries received in an auto accident. He was employed by Air Control Technologies. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Townsend; children, Tyler James Townsend and Hanna Denise Townsend, both at home; father, Albert Wayne Townsend Sr. of Charleston; mother, Sherri VanDerMark of Round Rock, Texas; sister, Virginia Townsend of Nitro. Caroline Sue Young
Caroline Sue Young of Tornado died Nov. 10, 2002, at SunBridge Skilled Nursing Facility, Dunbar. She was born Nov. 18, 1936, at Staats Hospital, Charleston, and was preceded in death by her mother, Beulah Young. She graduated from public schools in Ripley. She worked several years in Chicago, Ill., later to return to food and beverage management at Young's restaurants in Charleston. She retired in 1996 to her residence in Tornado. She is survived by several cousins and a host of special friends. Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Cunningham Memorial Park Upper Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans, with the Rev. Donald R. Rosa E. Barber, 85, of 312 Walnut St., East Bank, died Nov. 10, 2002, in CAMC Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was born April 10, 1917, at Rush, Ky., and was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Barber Jr. She attended Gallagher Nazarene Church. She is survived by one son, Bill Barber and his wife, Peggy, of East Bank; one granddaughter, Reta M. Hughes; one great-granddaughter, Alyssa L. Russell Arvard Bell
Russell Arvard Bell, 83, of South Charleston passed away Nov. 8, 2002, after a short illness. He was retired from Union Carbide. He was a member of Indian Fork Primitive Baptist Church, Culloden. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1939 to 1945, and was awarded a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. He was called back to service during the Korean War, serving 18 months. He was an avid golfer in the Kanawha Valley and won the first Golf Championship at Big Bend Golf Course in 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents, Romie and Ida Bell; and his sister, Genevieve Bell McDaniel. Russell is survived by his wife, Ada Bell; daughter, Kathy Jane Ferrell and her husband, Allen, of Vienna; sister, Fannie Bell Beane of South Charleston; brother, Ronald E. Bell of Friendswood, Texas; grandchildren, James Russell Ferrell and Amy Marie Ferrell, both of Vienna; several nieces and nephews. Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Elder Willard Bird and Elder Lewis Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Teays Hill Cemetery, St. Albans. Larry David Cantrell
CONCORD, N.C. - Larry David Cantrell, 63, of Concord, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Nov. 5, 2002, in NorthEast Medical Center. Born Oct. 11, 1939, in Charleston, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Wilma Richards Cantrell. He was a truck driver. Survivors include his girlfriend, Anita Sue Keefer; daughters, Kristi Keefer of Concord, Deana Shoemaker of Roanoke, Va.; half sisters, Kay Halstead and Betty George, both of Charleston; half brother, Butch Cantrell of Charleston; two grandchildren. KIMBERLY - Larry Capps, 48, of Kimberly died Nov. 10, 2002, in CAMC General Hospital. He was born Jan. 21, 1954, in Montgomery, the son of the late Cecil Sr. and Ann Scott Capps. He had been employed at the West Virginia Institute of Technology, Montgomery, since 1973. Surviving are his wife, Pamela Null Capps; daughters, Kelly Capps of Smithers, Jessica Capps of Montgomery; son, Larry Capps of Montgomery; stepdaughter, Tandra Eary Williamson of Raleigh, N.C.; stepson, Travis Eary of Powellton; three grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren; sisters, Beverly Hudson of Powellton, Delores "Sunbeam" Campbell of Montgomery, Shirley Capps of Smithers; brother, Cecil Capps of Smithers. Thelma Stover Castleberry
Thelma Stover Castleberry, 97, of South Charleston died Nov. 10, 2002, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. She was born May 30, 1905, in Scarbro, daughter of the late Claude King and Lucy Burgess Stover. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Castleberry Sr.; three brothers, Julius, Aubrey and Wilbert Stover; and her grandson, Kelly L. "Larry" Castleberry II. Mrs. Castleberry had been employed for may years by the West Virginia Department of Workers Compensation, retiring in 1965. She was a member and very proud to be the full-time church organist of First United Methodist Church, South Charleston, for almost 50 years. She was a member of the Frances Ryan Circle, a former member of the Organists Guild of America and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 131, South Charleston. Surviving are her two sons and their spouses, William T. Jr. and Justina Castleberry and Kelly L. and Lorena Castleberry, all of South Charleston; seven grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at First United Methodist Church, South Charleston, with the Rev. William G. Kniceley officiating. Interment will follow in Cuninngham Memorial Park, St. Albans. He was born Oct. 20, 1927, at Napier, a son of the late Anna L. Conrad. "June" was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was born June 23, 1941, in Charleston, a son of the late Orva H. and Thelma Matthews Faber. He was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and was an avid trout fisherman. He was a truck driver for Old Dominion Freight Line, Charlotte, N.C. Kelly Alfred Ford
RONCEVERTE - Kelly Alfred Ford, 72, of Ronceverte passed away Nov. 10, 2002, in University Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. Mr. Ford was born May 7, 1930, in Ronceverte, the son of the late Guy and Frances Kelley Ford. He was also preceded in death by his twin brother, Albert D. Ford; and half brother, James Brown. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a graduate of Greenbrier Military Academy and received a bachelor's degree in education from Concord College and a master's degree plus 45 from Radford University. He taught English and social studies at Lewisburg High School and Shakespeare and English at Greenbrier East, was principal of Ronceverte Junior High School, elementary supervisor for the Greenbrier County Board of Education and retired as assistant superintendent in 1989. Kelly was very active in all aspects of life at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Ronceverte, a member of the board of directors of the Ronceverte Public Library, was on the Ronceverte Police Review Board and was an avid hunter and flea marketer. Survivors include his wife, Ann Reed Ford; daughter, Mary L. Fisk of Ronceverte; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Ann Ford of White Sulphur Springs; and brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Betty Ford of Ronceverte; grandchildren, Julie and Bradley Fisk, both of Ronceverte; several nieces and nephews. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Ronceverte, with Father Richard Shoda officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Ronceverte. DOROTHY - Faye Marie Massey, 78, of Dorothy died Nov. 10, 2002, at her home after a long illness. She was born Feb. 6, 1924, at Dorothy, a daughter of the late Frank Vannetter and Elsie Ferrell Vannetter Cline. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Massey; a son, Frankie Massey; a grandson, Frank Massey Jr.; and her stepfather, Mack Cline. She was a homemaker. She is survived by cousins, Mildred Martin, Terry Lamb, Kay Daniel, Leoda Thompson and Carl Ferrell. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. She was born Dec. 14, 1909, in Webster Springs, a daughter of the late Leland and Alice Woods Starcher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira Lewis McNeely; a daughter, Beulah Mary Hudnall; and a grandson, Jimmy Lawson. She was a retired seamstress from Corbin Ltd. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet Deloris and James Lawson of Shrewsbury; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwdard T. and Annetta McNeely of Cleveland, Ohio, Billy Lee and Irene Parton of Millersville, Md.; 17 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Tommie Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Culloden Cemetery.
