Mr. Jack E. Byrd
LAKE CITY, Tenn. - Mr. Jack E. Byrd, 71 of Lake City, Tenn., formerly of Matoaka and Princeton died early Tuesday morning, July 29, 2003, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Born Nov. 30, 1931, at Coaldale, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Josie E. Thomas Byrd.
Mr. Byrd grew up in Matoaka, graduated from Matoaka High School, received his B.S. Degree in education from Concord College and his Master's of Art Degree from Marshall University in Huntington.
Mr. Byrd was well known in the area; he served as an educator and administrator in the Mercer County School System for more than 28 years. He began his career teaching at Elkhorn-Northfork Junior High School and then taught at Fairview Junior High School in Bluefield. He continued his career as assistant principle at Matoaka High School, then was named principle of Montcalm High School and finally at Princeton Junior High School. He finished his career in 1988 as the energy coordinator with the Mercer County Board of Education in the Central Office.
In June, 1978, Mr. Byrd was recognized by the West Virginia Board of Education for outstanding display of courage while assisting children, teachers and others, without a single concern for his own safety, during the fire that destroyed the former Princeton Junior High School building.
Mr. Byrd was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the U.S. Army. While serving with the Army, he received the Army Occupation Medal (Germany) and the National Defense Service Medal.
Mr. Byrd had lived in Lake City, Tennessee for the past 10 years. He truly was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had served as a fishing guide for many years. He also loved the game of golf
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucille Tabor, Elizabeth Reddish and Vada Brown; along with five brothers, Dewey A. Byrd, Kyle E. Byrd, Bernard D. Byrd, Charles F. Byrd Jr. and James Dennis Byrd.
Survivors include his son, John G. Byrd of Charleston; his former wife and John's mother, Joan Byrd of Princeton; his brother, Ted Byrd of Princeton; his sister, Oden Godfrey of Matoaka; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton with the Rev. Richard Scaggs officiating. Burial will follow.
The family will honor Mr. Byrd's request, his visitation will be held at the Pond. Those wishing to attend the visitation are to go south on Interstate 77; go through the East River Tunnel, take the very first exit, Exit No. 66; at the end of the exit, go right, across the concrete bridge and turn right; go 3 miles, the property is on the left.
Those chosen to serve as pallbearers will be Dr. Bill Martin, Phyllis Martin, Susan Paulette Martin Jones, Steve Byrd, Lee Cook, Ronnie Settles, Dr. Kevin Martin, Allen Martin, Carl Dickerson, Carl Bandy, J.D. Damewood, Janet Damewood, Ward Bailey and Joe Allen.

Catherine "Betty" Endean, of Elkview, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Debbie "Shorty" Shamblin of Elkview.
Catherine was born August 23, 1923, and was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy Endean.
Also surviving: sons, Kenny and Wayne Endean, both of California; seven grandchildren; 5 1/2 great-grandchildren.
The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation.

GASSAWAY - Lucinda L. English, 90, of Gassaway, W.Va., died July 30, 2003, at Braxton Health Care Center, Sutton, W.Va.
She was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Paplin, Va., a daughter of the late Charles and Veva Moore Watts.
She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Gassaway.
Her husband, Phillip English, whom she married on Nov. 9, 1931, preceded her in death in 1963.
Surviving are sons, Stanley English of Pembroke Pine, Fla., Daniel English of East Hampton, N.Y.; daughter, Sharon Abbott of Corning, N.Y.; brothers, Nolan Watts of Akron, Ohio, Charles Watts of Paris, Ohio, John Watts of Charleston, Lawrence Watts of Rio Grande, N.J., and Zeno Watts of Rittman, Ohio; sisters, Goldie Tolliver of Richwood, W.Va., and Elsie Smith of Wooster, Ohio; seven grandchildren; nine grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Gassaway with Father Elmer Nadicksbernd as celebrant. Interment will be at a later date at the Champlin Cemetery, Westfield, Pa.

HURRICANE - Mr. Herbert C. Gibson, 82, of Hurricane, W.Va., died July 29, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, W.Va., after a short illness. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane, and was retired from Union Carbide Corporation, South Charleston plant. He was a devoted attendee of BrainWorks, a stroke support group at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Alma Sowards Gibson, Frances Gruber Gibson and a longtime companion, Joyce Slack.
Surviving: daughter, Becky White of Ironton, Ohio; grandchildren, Patrick Good and Mary Cleary and her husband, Michael all of Lexington, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Dana Palmer and Samantha Cleary; sister, Verda Leadman and her husband, Donzie of Hurricane; brother, Dennis Gibson and his wife, Alice of Hurricane.

SPRING HILL, Fla. - Charles Howard "Chuck" Gullian, 50, of Spring Hill, Fla., formerly of Malden, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness.
He was a retired employee of E. I. DuPont at Belle, a former City of Charleston police officer and Kanawha County deputy sheriff. He was a 1970 graduate of DuPont High School and was a member of the FOP Capitol City Lodge No. 74.
He is survived by his mother, Nora Hick Gullian of Spring Hill, Fla.; stepsons, Stacy Reese of Tampa, Fla. and Anthony Reese of Charleston; sister-in-law, Elaine Gullian of Spring Hill; niece, Jamie Devine of Palm Harbor, Fla.; nephew, Todd Gullian of Spring Hill.

Mrs. Mildred F. Kimbler 76 of Spencer, Ind., formerly of West Virginia died at her home on July 28, 2003.
Mildred was a homemaker and a member of Cloverdale House of Prayer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Kimbler; parents, Robert H. and Cittie Hackworth Patton; three brothers and one sister.

B.L. "Mac" McLaughlin, 93, of South Charleston died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was retired from the West Virginia ABC Commission and was formerly employed at Fuel Processing, South Charleston.
He was a Christian affiliated with the Fifth Avenue Church of God, South Charleston.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia McLaughlin.

Samuel S. Pennington, 70, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Samuel is survived by his wife, Gloria "Donnie" Pennington; brother, Burton Pennington of Charleston; sisters, Marie Shaffer of Orlando, Fla., Dora Totten and Barbara Kitchen of Charleston, Carol Eads of South Charleston and Virginia Clark of Jacksonville, N.C.
His family includes daughter, Trina Dunlap and husband, David; son, Gregory Pennington and wife, Nancy; daughter, Lisa Boner and husband, Russell; and son, Gary Pennington and wife, Kelly. He was the grandfather of 13 and the great-grandfather of two.
Samuel retired from Goldfarb Electric Supply Co. after 48 years of service. He was a member of the Loudendale Church of the Nazarene.
Visitation will be at Good Shepherd Mortuary in South Charleston on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral service will be Sunday, August 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Loudendale Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. David Clark officiating.

Jennie Katherine Martin Pettyford
BECKLEY - Jennie Katherine Martin Pettyford, 99, also known as "Too Mama" was born Aug. 16, 1904, in Richmond, Ky. She departed this life July 30, 2003. She was born to the union of Lewis and Susan Reed Martin. She was educated in the public schools of Richmond.
At an early age she confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was affiliated with the Baptist Church. She was a former member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Charleston, West Virginia. In the former years Too Mama's health prevented her from being active in her church. She also resided in Portsmouth, Ohio, where she was very active in civic duties.
Her early years were spent as a domestic for Greyhound, where she retired. She then decided to work as a child care worker in New York; she had an opportunity to work for the (at that time) heavy weight champion of the world, Floyd Patterson. She worked for his family for more than 15 years. She also worked for families in Ohio and West Virginia.
She married J. D. Haynes (deceased) of Berea, Ky. To this union they were blessed with a lovely daughter, Katherine Haynes Dobson (now deceased). She also married Truman Randolph (deceased) of Charleston. Mr. Randolph departed this life in 1950. In 1960, She married Eugene Pettyford of Portsmouth,
Ohio. He died in 1970.
Too Mama was one of 12 children. All are now deceased. Those who preceded her in death are: Lewis Martin, Robert Martin, Harry Martin, Hasbrook Martin, Eldridge Martin, Ellen Pearl Martin, Leila Tennell, Ada Sharp, Nannette Hughley, Mrs. Sarah Watkins and Mrs. Estella Chenault.
She leaves to cherish her memory one grandson, Richard Carl Dobson (wife, Lynn); four great-grandchildren, Richard Tracey Dobson of Atlanta, Ga., Tamela Dobson of Cleveland, Ohio, Ceddrick Cumming of Cleveland, Ohio, Theopolis Cummings of Valdosta, Ga. She bas seven great-great-grandchildren, Tynell, Tynazia, Micheal, Krishauna, Breon, Jekya and Brittnie.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Durgan Funeral Home Chapel, 1501 South Kanawha St., Beckley, W.Va. with Bishop Fred Simms and the Rev. Aaron Hairston officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Maple Grove Cemetery, Richmond, Ky.

Rebecca Lynn Cowley Plantz
Rebecca Lynn Cowley Plantz, 38, of South Charleston, formerly of the Seng Creek area of Whitesville, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the home of her parents, Richard and Sue Tabor Cowley of Seng Creek after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born February 25, 1965, at Charleston. She was a graduate of Sherman High School. She received her BSN degree from WVU and her BA degree from UC. She was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She was on the Dean's List of WVU Institute of Technology and a member of the Statewide Independent Living Council. She was employed with the Worker's Compensation Division of the State of West Virginia.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Robert M. Plantz; grandmother, Sylvia Wills Tabor of Arnett, W.Va.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Sylvester Church of God, Sylvester with the Rev. Bartholomew Perry and the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, W.Va.

Harold L. Proctor
WINFIELD - Mr. Harold L. Proctor, 79, of Winfield, W.Va., died July 29, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Hospital from complications of lung cancer.
He was the son of the late William E. Proctor and Della Nelson Proctor Hackney of Campbell's Creek. He was a graduate of the Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, W.Va., and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He attended Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, and was a 1951 graduate of Morris Harvey College, Charleston, where he was a member of the 1951 Tangerine Bowl Championship football team. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, Salt Lake City, Utah; the Burgess Coal Co, Clothier, W.Va., Gulick Industries, Des Moines Iowa, and was retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corp, Charleston in 1984 with 33 years of service.
He coached little league baseball and midget league football teams in Kanawha City and Winfield during the 1950's and 1960's and was a co-founder of the midget football leagues in Kanawha and Putnam Counties. He was a ranger at Big Bend Golf Course, Tornado for several years. He was a member of Scarlet Oaks Country Club, Silkey's Golf Team and was a frequent golfer at several area courses. He was known to occasionally enliven the games with a snappy tune from his harmonica.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Miller Proctor; daughter, Linda Stokes and her husband, Jack of Vienna, W.Va.; son, Michael Proctor of Winfield; granddaughter, Samantha Stokes of Winston Salem, N.C.; grandson, Chad Proctor of Winfield; sister, Geneva Reed of Baltimore, Md.; brother, Jack H. Chambers and his wife, June of Jacksonville, Fla.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapman Funeral Home with Dr. Maxwell Perrow officiating. Entombment will be in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Red House, W.Va.

BIRCH RIVER - Myrtle Gay Cutlip Rose, 77, wife of Sherman Rose of Birch River for 59 years went home to be with the Lord on July 30, 2003, following a long illness.
She passed away at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Mrs. Rose was born April 12, 1925, in Nicholas County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Walter W. and Eva Williams Cutlip.
She was a lifelong member of the Mill Creek Union Church; a homemaker and a great quilt maker.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Marvin Rose of Birch River, W.Va., and Alvin Rose of Buffalo, W.Va.; two brothers, Stanley Cutlip of Sutton, W.Va., and Scott Cutlip of Heaters, W.Va.; one sister, Daisy Carpenter of Wadsworth, Ohio; four grandchildren, Shelly Lavender of Cheboygan, Mich., Paula Frame of Gassaway, W.Va., Regina Riffle of Frametown, W.Va., and Kristen Engels of Boise, Idaho; and six great-grandchildren, Travis, Amber, Dustin, Justin, Miranda, and Rachel.
