High School, a veteran of World War II, attended Center College, Charleston, the University of Miami and was a cum laude graduate of Marshall College with a degree in business education. He was a former circuit clerk and former first chief deputy of Kanawha County, W.Va., a former employee of Carbon Fuel Co. and was retired treasurer of Carbon Industries. He was a certified public accountant and a member of several fraternal, professional and military organizations, including the American Association of Certified Accountants, the West Virginia Society of Public Accountants, Odd Fellows, Rebekah Lodge, Moose Lodge, VFW, American Legion, Lambda Chi Alpha, Kappa Delta Phi and the Reserve Officers Association.

He was a miner at Eastern Associated Coal Co.'s Lightfoot No. 2 mine with 20 years of service, a member of the UMW and former fireman of the year at the Barrett Fire Department.
