He was a former St. Albans city policeman, former head of security at the B.F. Goodrich-Gulf Rubber Plant, Institute, an appliance repairman. He was a member of the Washington Masonic Lodge 58 AF and AM, Scotish Rites Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, the Fraternal Order of Police 88, Nitro Moose Lodge 565. He was a Navy veteran and a 43 resident of St. Albans.

Dr. Joseph A. Smith, 77, of Dunbar died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Thomas Memorial Hospital. He was a retired physician from Dunbar Medical Associates, formerly Smith, Merrifield and Hively, attended Glenville State College, was a graduate of West Virginia University and Medical College of Virginia, an Army Air Corps captain during World War II and was former chief of staff at Mountain State Memorial Hospital and Thomas Memorial Hospital. He was a member and former president of the Academy of Family Physicians, the West Virginia State Medical Association and the Kanawha Medical Society, a member and delegate of the National Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Association, and a member of the Southern Medical Association, the West Virginia Medical Licensing Board, Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church, Dunbar, Rotary Club, Dunbar, and the advisory board of United National Bank.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Nitro, where he was a eucharistic minister, member of the Liturgy Committee, catechist,Sponsor for the Rite of Christian Initiation in Adults, and chairman of the usher board.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Roy M. Brewer Sr., 87, of Fort Myers, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Jan. 23, 1998, at home after a long illness. He was a pioneer in the fire protection industry and was founder of Brewer & Co. of West Virginia Inc., where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of Jehovah's Witness Fellowship, Local 669 Sprinkler Fitters Union and the National Fire Protection Association.

HURRICANE -- Thomas J. McGinnis Jr., 80, of Hurricane died Jan. 23, 1998, in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane, after a short illness. He was a former schoolteacher in Putnam County and Gallipolis, Ohio, a graduate of Morris Harvey College, and former registrar and director of admissions at Morris Harvey College. He was former director of the Division of Teacher Certification of the State of West Virginia. He established the Dr. Thomas J. McGinnis Jr. endowed scholarship at the University of Charleston. He was a member of West Virginia Historical Society and was inducted into the National Social Science Honor Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
