Timothy Wayne Shannon
A Kanawha County sheriff's deputy has lost his two-year battle with brain cancer.
Timothy Wayne Shannon, 34, died Sunday at his home in Charleston.
Shannon served with the sheriff's department for more than a decade, most recently as a bailiff in the Judicial Annex.
Fellow officers recalled Shannon as a good friend and incessant practical joker.
"He's been referred to as gentle giant," said Cpl. Bob Sullivan of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, who has known Shannon's family for nearly 30 years. "He's a real gentle, sweet, nice guy. There wasn't a finer guy, I'll tell you that."
Both Sullivan and Deputy Richard Putillion worked with Shannon at the courthouse and went through the police academy with him. At the academy, Shannon was named best officer, an honor voted on by his classmates.
"He was one of those type of people -- and there are very few people that you can say this about -- that your life's better for having known," Putillion said. "Everyone's life is richer for having known him. Anyone who knew him was his friend."
Shannon gained a reputation around the courthouse as a bailiff with a superior sense of humor after pulling off such pranks as setting mousetraps under desks, placing shoe polish inside trooper's hats and transferring the "thought of the day" phone line to the bailiff's telephone.
"He was just a likable, quiet guy who liked to pull pranks on you and joke with you," Putillion said. "He would stick toilet paper to your gunbelt when you came out of the bathroom or you might reach into the mailbox and come out with a handful of mustard."
Both men said they saw Shannon in the last month. They said even though Shannon was sick, he tried to stay optimistic.
"I saw him just last week, and he kept saying to me, `I'll be back,'" Sullivan said. "He loved being a cop. I think he just basically felt he could help people better that way."
Shannon had been married to his wife, Tina, for less than a year when a CAT scan discovered the cancer. But neither the tumor nor the operations nor the chemotherapy prevented Shannon from trying to be a good husband and father to his two stepdaughters.
"He loved those kids so much. He really cared about them so much like they were his own," Sullivan said.
Shannon, who had previously worked on road patrol, was a member of a law enforcement family. His father is a retired Charleston Police officer and his brother currently serves on the force.
Shannon is survived by his wife, Tina; stepdaughters, Danielle andJessica Perry both at home; parents, Robert and Nancy Shannon of Charleston, brother, Mark Shannon of Charleston; twin sister, Kimberly Neil of Charleston; and grandmother, Louise Wolf of Charleston.
Shannon was a member of the Charleston Fraternal Order of Police lodge, the Moose lodge, the Elks lodge and the Kanawha County Sheriffs Association.
