He retired from Consolidated Freightway, Zanesville, Ohio, was a member of Stonecoal United Methodist Church, a Navy veteran, a member of Masonic Lodge 406, Leesville, Ohio, a member and president of Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants, a board member of Jackson Mill Heritage Foundation, director of the Mining Your History Foundation, a volunteer for the Historic Area Jackson Mill and for Central West Virginia Genealogy and History Foundation, former president of the East Lewis Lions Club, member of Teamsters 637, past patron of Order of the Eastern Star, Leesville, former president of Conotton Valley Athletic Boosters and former treasurer of the Panther Den Booster Club.

CENTERVILLE, Ohio -- Shera L. Gurtis, 65, of Centerville, formerly of Charleston and Ravenswood, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Southview Hospital. She was a member of the Junior Group of Goodwill Industries and Friends of Benham's Grove.
Surviving: husband, Eugene Gurtis; daughters, Jana Lee Gurtis of Santa Fe, N.M., Kathryn N. Howenstine of Randolph, N.J.; sons, Thomas R. Gurtis of Parkersburg, W.Va., Timothy A. He was the retired owner of Lewis Supermarket on Lee and Truslow streets for 40 years, a member of St. George Orthodox Church, a lifelong resident of Charleston, a Mason, member of York Bodies and Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston, and a 60-year member of the Phoenician Club (men's organization).

He was an 18-year resident of Stuart and a retired branch manager for Borden Company in Ohio and West Virginia with 33 years of service. He was a member of Masonic lodges in Ohio and West Virginia.
