Ralph S. Smith
Ralph Silas Smith, DDS, 85, of Charleston died today, March 30, 1998, in CAMC, Memorial Division, after a long illness. He was a retired dentist and a member of the American Dental Association for more than 50 years, served as president of the Kanawha Valley Dental Society and was a member of the West Virginia Board of Dental Examiners from 1971-1980. He was born in Rio, Hampshire County, and was raised in the Eastern Panhandle, attended St. John's Academy in Petersburg, graduated from Moorefield High School, West Virginia University and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in China, Burma and India. He was a 59-year member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Charleston, where he served as congregation president and elder, was a Mason, member of Beni Kedem Temple, Scottish Rite, Psi Omega Fraternity, the International College of Dentists and Berry Hills Country Club.
Surviving: wife, Mildred V. Smith; sons, Ralph S. Smith Jr. and Richard Duff Smith of Charleston; daughter, Rosemary L. Smith of Charleston; brother, Edward W. Dorothy Mae Snyder, 82, of Pinch died Friday, March 27, 1998, in CAMC, General Division, after a long illness. She was a homemaker and member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Pinch.
Surviving: son, Bill Snyder of Frankfurt, Germany; daughters, Emma Lou Snyder Davis of Street, Md., Debra Lynn Snyder of Big Chimney; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. John Paul Swint, 73, of Charleston died Saturday, March 28, 1998, in Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Ohio, after a long illness. He was retired senior analyst in the works and research lab from DuPont, Belle, with 38 years of service, a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, a graduate of Charleston Catholic High School and the University of Notre Dame. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a recipient of the St. Gregory Medal from the Wheeling Diocese, scout master of Troop 2, Charleston, cub master of Pack 28 and a recipient of the Silver Beaver in scouts.
Surviving: wife, Mary Ann Thomas Swint; daughter, Ann Burke of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sons, Jack and Howard of Charleston; sisters, Sister Agnes de Sales Swint of Wheeling, Bernice Sheets of South Charleston, Elizabeth Power of Boulder, Colo., Marcellene Beckelhiemer of Charleston; brother, Benjamin H. She was a resident of the Organ cave community for more than 75 years, retired from Leggett Department Store, Lewisburg, with 27 years of service, was a 35-year member and historian of Salem Presbyterian Church, a former Sunday school teacher, member of Circle 2 of the church, a 60-year charter member, treasurer and scrapbook chairman of Organ Cave Extension Homemakers Club, former president and former secretary of the Greenbrier County Extension Homemakers Council, a Greenbrier County Belle, a member of Rainelle Extension Homemakers Club and Highland First Church of God Golden Youth, Rainelle, a 20-year 4-H leader, recipient of the 4-H Meritorious Service Award in 1996, secretary/treasurer of the Lewisburg Satellite Club and a 1934 graduate of Greenbrier High School.

She was a retired Kanawha County teacher and principal with 44 years of service, last serving at John Hansford School, Crown Hill, received her bachelor's degree from Morris Harvey College, master's degree in social science from Marshall College and was a member of Old Kanawha Baptist Church, Pratt.
