FAIRLEA -- Obie Edwin Carter, 76, of Fairlea, formerly of Ronceverte, died Monday, March 30, 1998, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after a long illness.
He was a member of Ronceverte Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, elder and member of the Men of the Church, retired from the federal prison at Alderson, and Greenbrier Motors, Fairlea, was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a graduate of Union High School and a member of the school's Football Hall of Fame. He was a Shriner, a Mason, member of the VFW and American Legion and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater.
Surviving: daughters, Bobbie Reed of Union, Rosalie Ambler of Ronceverte; four grandchildren.

He was an honors graduate of Wayne State University College of Pharmacy, recipient of the school's Medical Arts Award, the retired owner of Jack's Professional Pharmacy, co-owner of Weslo Drug Co., Logan, and Economy Drug, Pikeville, Ky. He was a member of the West Virginia and Kentucky pharmacy boards, adjunct instructor at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, a former member of UMW and was an Army Air Force corporal during World War II.
Surviving: wife, Georgia Gunter Gilmore; sons, David of Cross Lanes, Roger of Huntington; brother, Clarence of Winter Park, Fla.
