Jewel E. McCoy, 90, of Charleston, formerly of Frame, died Friday, April 3, 1998, in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness. She was a housewife and a member of Swann Presbyterian Church, Charleston, and Rebekah Lodge 57. She was preceeded in death by her husband, John H. "Mac" McCoy.

He was a graduate of Clendenin High School, a 15-year resident of Ohio and an iron worker at LTV Steel with 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by parents, Fred and Ethel Mick.

She was a Unitarian and a sociology graduate of West Virginia University. She received her master's degree in sociology from the University of Chicago.

Rev. Chester L. Hawk
NEW BERN, N.C. -- The Rev. Chester Louis Hawk, 94, of New Bern died April 3, 1998, in New Bern. He was a retired minister and member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, New Bern. He was an interim pastor in the Charleston, W.Va., area from 1950 to 1983 before he retired. He pastored several churches in Ohio and Tennessee and was director of public relations for Sioux Falls (S.D.) College.

HUNTINGTON -- Amy King Thomasson, 94, of Huntington died April 3, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. She was a member of Beverly Hills United Methodist Church, Huntington.
Surviving: daughters, Edward M. Thomasson of Paintsville, Ky., Larry Thomasson of Auburn, Ala., Paul Thomasson of Huntington; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. C. Roger Crawford
WINFIELD -- A local longtime law enforcement official who headed departments in South Charleston and at Yeager Airport has died. C. Roger Crawford, 67, of Winfield, formerly of South Charleston, died Sunday at home after a short illness. He retired as chief of police for Yeager Airport several years ago with 13 years of service. He retired as chief of police in South Charleston in 1982. He worked at the department 22 years. "I worked with him for years," said South Charleston Police Chief Jim Miller. "He was a very good officer, very conscientious." His friend, Bob Snyder, a South Charleston councilman, said Crawford was highly respected for doing a top-notch job. "He provided solid leadership to the police department," Snyder said. "He worked continually to upgrade equipment and provided solid leadership during trying times. I've always had a lot of respect for Roger." L.C. Yost, current chief of police for Yeager Airport, said Crawford was well liked and fair. "You couldn't find a better person than Roger," Yost said. "You wouldn't want a better chief. Everyone liked Roger. He was fair with everybody. We're going to miss him." He was a member of South Charleston Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 85, South Charleston, past member of the board of directors, a Navy veteran, 1949 graduate of South Charleston High School, attended West Virginia State College and Morris Harvey College. He lived most of his life in South Charleston before retiring to Winfield where he was a member of Winfield United Methodist Church. One of his sons also went into law enforcement.
