Barton was one of the oldest practicing lawyers in West Virginia, starting his career in 1937. The Charleston resident died Sunday in Charleston Area Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.
His marriage was long-lasting as well. Ruth Barton, his wife of 57 years, recalled that a friend from Charleston set up the pair in 1940 on a blind date.
The couple first went out dancing in a nightclub, then met two more times during Ruth's weeklong stay in Charleston. Barton then visited her at her Erie, Pa., home before they married in early 1941.
"I liked everything," 79-year-old Ruth Barton said about her husband this morning. "His personality, his sincerity, his compassion, his drive for success."
That drive remained until Barton died, she said.
Barton was a lawyer in private practice with 55 years of service. He was also staff attorney for the Public Service Commission, working through the past year.
"Harry was somebody who wanted to work," said Paul Stewart, who was Barton's supervisor as manager of the commission's Motor Carrier division. "His mental faculties were still good. He enjoyed work and being around people."
"He loved his family and was a devoted man to his Jewish faith," Kaufman said. "He was an active leader in both the law and life until the day he died."
Barton was a member and former president of B'nai Jacob Synagogue and a member of Temple Israel. He also was a lieutenant commander of the Navy during World War II and a graduate of West Virginia University College of Law.
