Shirley Rupe Barthelmess, 61, of St. Albans died May 31, 1997, at home after a short illness. She was a member of Washington Street Church of Christ, St. Albans, a former secretary to Mayor Clyde Alford of St. Albans, and a former aide to Sharon Rockefeller and former House Speaker Joe Albright. She was a former Democratic Executive Committee Chairwoman, president of W.R. Brass Corp., and a 50-year resident of Kanawha County. She was valedictorian of Clendenin High School, Class of 1953. Surviving: husband, Arthur Barthelmess; sons, Rick of St. Albans, Steve and Brett, both of Hurricane; daughter, Beverly Taylor of Wexford, Pa.; parents, N. Arnold and Sybil Halstead Rupe of St. Albans; brothers, James Rupe of Logan, Joe Rupe of Crystal Lake, Ill.; eight grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Minister Steve Fox and Dr. Donald Howard officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Doris A. Hartley Dawson
INVERNESS, Fla. -- Doris Ann Hartley Dawson, 50, of Inverness, formerly of Jodie, W.Va., and Beech Glen, W.Va., died May 30, 1997, in a Gainesville, Fla., hospital after a short illness. She was a homemaker. Surviving: husband, Donald Dawson; sons, Darrell of Norfolk, Va., Doug of Inverness; daughter, Denise Youhal of Norfolk; brother, Jerry Hartley of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters, Betty Hughes of Falls View, Helen Bailes of Ravenswood; six grandchildren. William Dobbins
CLEVELAND -- William Dobbins, 68, of Cleveland, formerly of Clay County, W.Va., died May 24, 1997, at home after a long illness. He was retired from Ford Motor Company Cleveland Engine Plant, member of Ford Motor Fellowcraft, and a member of Masonic Lodge, Cleveland. Surviving: wife, Mary Varney Dobbins; daughters, Peggy Buckner, Betty Adams, Brenda Asbury and Linda Dobbins, all of Cleveland; sisters, Myrtle Short, Mary Shamblin, Leona Wherle, Dottie Orders, Allie Childers, Francis Hosey and Alice Burdette, all of Procious, Marjorie Conway of Clendenin, Gloria Butcher of Vermillion, Ohio; brothers, Paul, the Rev. Rev. William James Sr.
The Rev. William Jennings James Sr., 77, of Charleston died May 29, 1997, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness. He was born in Carbondale, lived most of his life in Kanawha County and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Charleston. He attended Eastern Nazarene College of Boston and received a bachelor's degree from God's Bible School of Ohio. He was an ordained minister and retired from Memorial Division, CAMC. He retired from the Navy with 28 years' service as a corpsman and a chaplain during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Surviving: wife, Rose Marie Moore James; sons, William II and Mark, both of Charleston; daughters, Deborah and Kimberly, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Miriam C. and Jane Ann, both of Charleston; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, with the Rev. Douglas Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery. She was a member of #1 Paint Creek District Music Convention, member, soloist, and usher of West Virginia Quartet Convention and was a member of the Gospel Edwinettes. He was retired from the United States government for which he last did private research. He was a graduate of West Virginia State College, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a native of Charleston, W.Va. Surviving: wife, Agnes Tucker; son, Lawrence E. Jr. of Oracle, Ariz.; daughters, Lorraine Neil of Greensboro, N.C., Christina Lowe of Huntington, Pa., Eleanor Houser of Tucson, Margaret Nevarz of Albuquerque, N.M.; brothers, Robert L. of Charleston, Reese H. of Richmond, Va.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
