Edward H. Harsh
Edward H. Harsh, 81, of Fairmont (Mount Harmony community), died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh. He was born Dec. 18, 1918, at Parsons, son of the late Arden Ray and Delphia M. Runner Harsh. He served with the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He had last worked as manager of the Ashland Service Station in Worthington. He also has worked with sheet metal for Radcliff Sheet Metal and S.M. Kisner. As a young man, he was a farmer and worked for C&P Coal Co. at Flemington. He had attended Union Chapel Church, in Tucker County. He enjoyed hunting. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wanda Harris Harsh, whom he married Dec. 25, 1945; two brothers and spouses, John R. "J.R." and Doris Harsh, of Winfield community, and Cecil W. and Martha Harsh, of Fairmont; and four nephews, David Harsh, of South Carolina, Roger Harsh, of Eldora community, and Johnny Harsh and Roger Harsh, both of Winfield community. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Guy Harsh. At the request of the deceased, his body has been cremated. Jeanette Marie Bell
Jeanette Marie Bell, 86, of 501 Van Voorhis Road, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born June 11, 1913, in Dunbar, Pa., daughter of the late John and Raffaile Chioretta Bell. Due to the early death of her parents, she was reared by her cousins, the late Felix and Rose Bell Farace. She was a member of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church. She was previously employed by Bell's Market, in Mount Morris, Pa., and Pierce's Pharmacy. She was a dental assistant for Dr. Patrick Farace, Dr. Victor Byrd, and Dr. Don Comley. She also was a bookkeeper. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Mr. Anthony (Wilma) Farace, of Mount Morris, Mrs. Patrick (Connie) Farace, of Morgantown, Mrs. Angelo (Dorothy) Bell, of Connellsville, Pa., and Mrs. Peter (Gloria) Caruso, of Uniontown, Pa., and by her caregivers, Donald and Rose Ellen Lawrence. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Natalie Bell and Genevieve Weimer; three brothers, Angelo Bell, Paul Meruchi and Peter Caruso; two foster brothers, Anthony J. Farace and Dr. Patrick J. Farace; and her close and dearest friend, Stephen F. Lawrence. Georgianna Lowe
Georgianna Lowe, 82, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Morgantown, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Memorial Hospital. She was born in Pittsburgh. She was a social worker and a member of Chi Omega Fraternity at West Virginia University. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Lowe, of Tampa, and a sister, Jean Shaffer, of Naples, Fla. John W. Groves
John W. Groves, 75, of Carmichaels, Pa., formerly of Dilliner, Pa., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glendale. He was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Dilliner, son of the late Roy and Lennie Summers Groves. He retired as a coal miner from U.S. Steel Maple Creek mine, and was a member of UMW Local 1248. He was raised in Poland Mines Assembly of God Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Florence Sullenberger Groves; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Linda) Konwalski and Mrs. Bill (Lisa) White, both of Cameron; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Richard Eugene Groves, in infancy, and John W. Groves Jr.; a sister, Frances Presock; and four brothers, Willis, Floyd, Wayne, and Gerald Groves. Genevieve Williams
Genevieve Williams, 86, of Route 1, Grafton, died Wednesday Feb. 2, 2000, at Beulah Land Personal Care Home, Knottsville (Grafton). She was born June 4, 1913, in Barbour County, daughter of the late Lum Mayle and Ivy Kennedy Mayle. She was a homemaker. She was Methodist. She is survived by two granddaughters, Dana Mayle, of Grafton, and Karla Gabbert, of Summersville, S.C.; a grandson, Terry Dalton, of Washington, Pa.; a brother, Audward Mayle, of Canton, Ohio; a sister, Portia Dalton, of South New Berlin, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Alicia Mayle, Chad Mayle and Brook Ware; and a great-great-grandson, Alexander Flynn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Williams, on May 2, 1972; a daughter, Connie "Emogene" Dalton; a sister, Dorothy Norris; and three brothers, Prunty Mayle, Arthur Mayle and Earl Mayle. Frank Gibson
Frank Gibson, 89, of Wolf Run Road, Morgantown, formerly of Worthington, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in Point Manor Personal Care Home, Point Marion, Pa. He was born Aug. 22, 1910, at Centralia, Braxton County, son of the late Silas and Lillie Jenkins Gibson. He retired as a coal miner from Bethlehem Steel Co. Idamay mine. He was a member of UMW Local 1501, Shinnston, and Everson Baptist Church, Worthington. He is survived by a daughter and spouse, Janet and Willard Mayhew, of Morgantown; a stepdaughter, Ramona Shriver, of Taylor County; a stepson, Preston A. McElwain, of Worthington; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Morrison Riffle Gibson, two sisters and three brothers. John Louis Pervola
John Louis Pervola, 64, of Sebastian, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Sebastian River Medical Center, Roseland, Fla. He was born Dec. 4, 1935, in Star City. He moved to Sebastian 21/2 years ago from Guinea, West Africa. He was a 1952 graduate of Morgantown High School. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business/accounting in 1956 from WVU. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a captain. He worked for Republic Steel, Lamco, Dravo, CBG and Lionore. He spent most of his career in Liberia, West Africa, where he was president and general manager of LMC and LAMCO. He was CEO of CBG in Guinea. His career also took him to Ohio, Michigan, Louisiana and Florida. He was semi-retired and working for Vatland GMC, Vero Beach , Fla. He received the Knight Grand Band of the Order of African Redemption from the president of Liberia. He was an honorary U.S. Consul in Yekepa, Liberia, an Honorary Israeli Consul, an honorary major in the U.S. Green Berets, and an honorary member of Liberian Lion's Club and Guinea Lion's Club. He was a Kentucky Colonel. He was on the board of the Liberia Red Cross, Liberian Refugee Committee and many others. His passions were history, fishing, Egypt, jokes, his computer, his dogs, his family and his friends. He is survived by his wife, Pamela; two sons, John Eric and David; a daughter, Jennifer; two daughter-in-laws and a son-in-law; six grandchildren; his mother, Mary; and his sister, Marie. He was preceded in death by a wife, Terry Poling, and his father, John Pervola. Jack A. Ward Sr.
Jack A. Ward Sr., 88, of Montrose Avenue, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at his home. He was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Morgantown, son of the late Thomas and Mary Smith Ward. He was a labor organizer for UMW and the United Steelworkers Union and served on the executive boards. He was a former employee of Sterling Faucet Co. and was a member of Jones United Methodist Church. He is survived by a son and spouse, the Rev. Jack A. Jr. and Wilma Ward, of Plum Borough, Pa., and five grandchildren, Karen Ward, Jack Ward, Rickey Ward, Jason Ward and Dana Ward. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Denson Ward, on Jan. 20, 2000. Rear Adm. Frederick Burdett Warder
U.S. Navy Rear Adm. (Ret.) Frederick Burdett Warder, 95, a Grafton native who won the Navy Cross twice and was decorated by Holland for his command of the submarine Seawolf (SS-197) in World War II, died Tuesday, Feb. l, 2000, at his Ocala, Fla. home. He was born March 19, 1904, in Grafton, the eldest of eight children of the late Hugh and Anna Mary Moran Warder. He was a 1921 graduate of Grafton High School and a 1925 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. During his career, Warder commanded a three-submarine wolfpack (Snook, Harder and Pargo) in the Pacific. From September 1944 to July 1946, he was Officer-in-Charge of the Navy's Submarine School in New London, Conn. He was one of the first submariners to reach flag rank with his promotion to Rear Admiral in 1952. He was the Naval Representative on the U.S. government's 1950 Griffin Mission to then-French IndoChina (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) to assess American political and military strategy in the region. From 1957-60, he was commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. His flagship was the nuclear-powered Seawolf (SSN-575). He retired in June 1962 as commandant of the Eighth U.S. Naval District, headquartered in New Orleans. He received his two Navy Crosses for encounters in 1942: the first for three separate attacks on heavy Japanese forces in the Baedong Strait and at Christmas Island, Java; the second for engagements off Mindanao, in the southern Philippines. He received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for action during the Seawolf's Sixth War Patrol, near Borneo and the Makassar Straits. He received two Legion of Merit awards for his command of Submarine Division 122, for operations in the Marianas Islands and elsewhere in the Pacific, and a third for his service as Officer-in-Charge of the Submarine School. Among his numerous other decorations are a Submarine Combat Insignia with one silver star and one bronze star; a U.S. Army Distinguished Unit Badge for the Corregidor relief mission; and the Bronze Lion of Holland for the Seawolf's outstanding performance in support of allied forces. He is survived by his third wife, Gladys Kay Cassidy; two daughters, Susan Warder Savard, of Ottawa, Canada, and Grace Warder Harde, of Woodstock, Vt.; a daughter-in-law, Anne Horne Warder, of Pomona, Calif.; a brother, Thomas G. Warder, of Millsboro, Del.; a sister, Margaret Warder Byrd, of Grafton; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary M. Brydon, in 1968; his second wife, Eleanor Modisette, in 1979; a daughter, Mary Brydon Warder; and a son, Frederick Burdett Warder Jr. Hiers Funeral Home, Ocala, Fla., (352) 629-7171, is in charge of arrangements, which will be held in Ocala. He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.

Pearl Jane Price
Pearl Jane Price, 95, of Cartersville, Ga., and formerly of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Cartersville. She was born Dec. 11, 1904, in Hoult, daughter of the late Phineas and Rebecca Caldwell Flowers. She was a member of Morgantown Salvation Army Church, where she and her husband, Herbert J. Price, were active for more than 50 years. She is survived by two sons, Curtis J. Price, of Cartersville, and Raymond E. Price, of Dale City, Va.; two sisters, Emma Simmons, of Cartersville, and Daisy Bradford, of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Diana Somers, of Farmington, Mich., eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Price, a son, a daughter, two sisters and three brothers. A memorial service at Dering's Funeral Home will held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, with Capt. Sterling "Butch" Mallard officiating. Burial will be in Mount Union Cemetery.

Jonas Dwight Humphreys
Jonas Dwight "Fats" Humphreys, 83, of Wallace B. Murphy Nursing Care Facility, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at home. He was born July 1, 1916, in Nestorville, son of the late Samuel Sr. and Stella Haller Humphreys. He retired as an inspector after 29 years with Union Carbide in Anmoore. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 410, Belington, and was Methodist. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ann Humphreys, of Nestorville, and Mary Humphreys, of Rosemont, and a special niece, Beverly Findley, of Walnut Street, Grafton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Goodwin Humphreys, in 1991, and five brothers, Hugh, Harry, George, Horace and Samuel Humphreys Jr. Friends may call at Donald G. Josephine Virginia Baremore, 85, of Newport Street, Westover, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at home. Edna Mae Pyles
Edna Mae Pyles, 66, of Fairmont, formerly of Morgantown, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Earl Oliver and Ella Frances Ballah Pyles. She formerly attended the Sniders Temple Church in Georgetown and enjoyed sharing family times. She is survived by a brother and spouse, Earl and Edna Pyles, of Morgantown; three nieces, a nephew, two great-nieces and a great-nephew. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Pyles. There will be no funeral home visitation. Her body has been cremated. Private family services will be held in her family's cemetery. Frey Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Juanita Knicely
Helen Juanita Knicely, 75, of Rivesville, Hagans community, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born May 26, 1925, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Cecil Kirby and Lucy Moore Kirby. She was retired from the Swisher Bar-B-Q in Rivesville as a cook. She was Methodist. She enjoyed quilting and playing bingo, gardening, canning and the outdoors. She is survived by two sons, Donnie Knicely, of Priest River, Idaho, and Robbie Knicely, of Hagans; nine daughters, Ardith Brown, of Old Town, Fla., Jean Holt, of Spraggs, Pa., Bonnie Bell, of Holbrook, Pa., Francis Eddy, Mae Michael, and Kathy Ross, all of Rivesville, Patty White, of Rathdrum Idaho, Linda Crites and Joanne Crites, both of Hagans; two brothers, Ralph Kirby, of Cleveland, and Charles Crites, of Laurel Point; two sisters, Barbara White, of Grafton, and Shirley Hazzelwood, of Laurel Point; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Norman Knicely in 1980; four brothers, three sisters and a great-grandson. Frances Funk, 87, of Estate Drive, Morgantown, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Point Manor Personal Care Home, in Point Marion, Pa. Wilma Ruth Hamilton
Wilma Ruth Hamilton, 64, of Mannington, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She was born June 9, 1936, in Mannington, daughter of the late Martin and Gayetta Jane Michael Glover. She was a lifetime member of the Mannington Church of the Nazarene. She was a telephone operator in Mannington and had also raised several children in the Hamilton home. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rhonda Sue and Robert Sanders, of Farmington, Victoria Lynn and David Alan McVaney, of Mannington, Sheila Kay Hamilton, of Columbus; four grandchildren, Justin Michael Sanders, Michael David McVaney, Megan Nichole McVaney and Arreauna Ruth McMillion; a brother and sister-in-law, Edgar Lee and Donna Lou Glover, of Mannington; a surrogate sister, Emma Louise Cooley, of Atmore, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hamilton, on June 17, 1999, to whom she had been married for 42 years. Halfred Paul Lang
Halfred Paul Lang, 86, of Dyersburg, Tenn., formerly of Elkins, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at the Dyersburg Manor, Dyersburg. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a naval officer. He was a retired division manager for Allegheny Power in Morgantown, member and past Exalted Ruler of the Elkins Lodge 1135 BPOE, former member and past president of the Fairmont Kiwanis Club, former member and past secretary-treasurer of the Morgantown Kiwanis Club, member of the Dyersburg Kiwanis Club and the First United Methodist Church in Dyersburg. He is survived by a daughter, Janet B. Stewart, of Dyersburg; two brothers, Bretsel Lang, of Meadowville, and Arbon Land, of Albuquerque, N.M., and three grandchildren, Paul, Eric, and Chad Stewart, all of Dyersburg. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Thelma G. Mills, on Aug. 15, 1997; a son, Halfred Paul Lang II, and four brothers, Virgil, Winfred, Edwin and Guy Lang. Mildred C. W. Parrotta
Mildred C. Williams Parrotta, 88, of Cowell Street, Westover, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at MonPointe Continuing Health Care. She was born Nov. 15, 1911, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Milton W. and Ella D. Waters Coombs. She retired in 1972 after 35 years as an elementary schoolteacher in Monongalia County, teaching in Laurel Point, Harmony Grove and Lazzelle Union School. She also taught for 10 years at First Ward School, which was a training school for WVU students studying elementary education. She was a 1930 graduate of University High School and received her bachelor's in education from Fairmont State Teachers College and worked on her master's at WVU. She was a member of the Spruce Street United Methodist Church, the Monongalia County Association of Retired School Employees, the National Retired Teachers Association, the Senior Citizens Center, Morgantown Moose Auxiliary 264 of Morgantown and was a life member of the West Virginia Association of Retired School Em ployees. She is survived by her husband, Sam Parrotta Sr., whom she married in 1970; a sister, Maxine McKee, of Tionesta, Pa.; two brothers and a spouse, Dana and Pearle Coombs, of Booth, and Dr. Glenn Coombs, of Largo, Fla.; a stepson and spouse, Sam and Linda Parrotta, of Star City; eight nieces and five nephews. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Chester Ray Williams; three brothers, Delbert Coombs, Rex Coombs and Stanley Coombs; and a sister, Maple M. Stalnaker. Mary Lucille Roupe
Mary Lucille Thomas Roupe, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at the Manor Care Nursing Home in Westerville, Ohio. She was born at Flat Run, daughter of the late Israel Francis and Lillie Frances Thomas. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mannington, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for several years. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star Chapter 6, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1969 and 1970. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Linda and Robert Lewis, of Gahanna, Ohio; a grandson and spouse, Greg and Renee Lewis; a granddaughter and spouse, Cherie and Scott Oliveto; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin McNeal, Daniel W. John Edward Porter
John Edward Porter, 88, of Granville, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center. He was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Lonaconing, Md., son of the late Charles D. Spigot and Genevieve Kane Porter. He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He worked for the Arkwright Coal Mines until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of the Arkwright UMWA local. He is survived by his wife, Antoinette Demchak Porter; a son and spouse, John "Jack" and Libby Porter, of Westover; two daughters and spouses, Kathleen P. and William T. Holmes, of Fairmont, and Karen and Marion Zuccari, of Morgantown; two grandsons, John David Porter and Michael William Zuccari; and two granddaughters, Beth Ann Goodwin and Nicole Ann Zuccari. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rose Finnell. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, until the Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., with Father Carl E. Bauer as celebrant. Burial will be in East Oak Grove Cemetery. A scriptural wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Warren 'Butch' Darby Sr.
Warren L. "Butch" Darby Sr., 55, of Bruceton Mills, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at home. He was born Jan. 26, 1945, in Bruceton Mills, son of Maxine Falkenstine Darby, of Bruceton Mills, and the late Hugh Warren Darby. He was a member of Sugar Valley United Methodist Church. He is also survived by his wife, Valerie Wolfe Darby; a son and spouse, Warren L. "Butch" Jr., and Linda Darby, of Bruceton Mills; a daughter and spouse, Teresa and John Cramer, of Bruceton Mills; two brothers and spouses, James Ray and Charlotte Darby, of Culpepper, Va., and Thomas H. and Susan Darby, of Bruceton Mills; a sister and spouse, Jane Ann and Jesse Monroe, of Bruceton Mills; and three grandchildren, Christopher Darby, Nathan Cramer and Samantha Darby. Spear Funeral Home, Brandonville, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Sugar Valley United Methodist Church, Bruceton Mills, until the 2 p.m. service with the Rev. Elizabeth W. Davis
A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Pisgah United Methodist Church, for Elizabeth W. Davis, 92, of Smithtown Road, Morgantown, who died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born June 20, 1907, in Greensboro, N.C., daughter of the late Robah and Stella Craven Watson. She was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was an organist. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jean Davis, of Morgantown, with whom she made her home; three sons, Charles C. Davis, of Rio Rancho, N.M., Hugh G. Davis, of Freemont, Calif., and Richard G. Davis, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Roma Blackburn, of Winter Park, Fla., and Faye Shewey, of Clermont, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Charles E. Davis, and two brothers, Harvey G. Watson and Mark N. Watson. Hastings Funeral Home provided cremation services.

Mary Louise Condry
Mary Louise Condry, 86, of Morgantown, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at The Madison Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center. Dering's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia J. R. Sturm
Virginia J. Robinson Sturm, 84, of Idamay, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at the Arbors of Fairmont. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Dudash, of Fairmont, and Mrs. Thomas (Paulette) Garman, of Jos, Nigeria; and a son, Carroll C. Sturm, of Germantown, Md. Friends may call at Dent Funeral Home in Farmington from 5-9 p.m. Saturday. Service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6. Burial will be in Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
