William Harned
William 'Bill' Harned, 74, of Kingwood, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Preston Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 18, 1925, in Kingwood, son of the late Walter and Nell Hardesty Harned.
He owned and operated Harned's Garage, in Kingwood, for 31 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was a member of Fort Butler VFW Post 826.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eugenia Smith Harned; a son, Randy Harned, of Houston, Texas; and two sisters, Eleanor Moore, of Cabins, and Madeline Graham, of Albright.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Harned and Norman Harned, and a sister, Irene Feather.

John Kuhn
John Kuhn, 80, of New Martinsville, and formerly of the Hundred area, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in Wetzel County Hospital of complications from a stroke.
He was born May 6, 1919, at Hundred, son of the late Edward and Olive Moore Kuhn.
He retired from Mobay Chemical (Bayer) in 1982 after 27 years of service. He was Protestant.
He is survived by a son, Steven Kuhn, of New Martinsville; two daughters and a spouse, Barbara Huggins, of New Martinsville, and Sharon and Gordon Christman, of Houston; a brother, Gleason Kuhn, of Fairmont; eight grandchildren, Jill Christman Ash, of Dallas, Steven Christman, of Charlotte, N.C., Kelli Christman, of Dallas, Heidi Huggins Grimm and Heather Huggins Cozart, of New Martinsville, and Steven Kuhn, David Kuhn and Bryan Kuhn, all of Sommerville, N.C., and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Kuhn.
There will be no funeral home visitation at the request of the deceased. The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family. Tennant Funeral Home, Hundred, is in charge of arrangements.
Arthur L. 'Pat' Patterson
Arthur L. 'Pat' Patterson, 79, of R.D. 1, New Freeport, Pa., Jollytown Community, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at The Washington Hospital, Pa.
He was born June 15, 1920, in Oak Forest, Pa., son of the late Hallie W. and Elizabeth Cole Patterson. He was a retired gasoline tanker driver for Coen Oil, in Washington, Pa. He was a member of Pursley Baptist Church and a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha Eakin Patterson; two sons, Robert R. Patterson, of Morgantown, and William A. Patterson, of Wadestown; three daughters, Patricia Raber and Jody Wilson, both of Jollytown, Pa., and Cathy Patterson, of Ruff Creek, Pa.; nine grandchildren; Patrick Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Douglas Robinson, Bambi Robinson, Daniel Patterson, Zackery Wilson, Patrick Wilson, Kourtney Wilson and Austin Patterson; and a great-granddaughter, Serenity Elizabeth Woodhouse.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William A. Patterson; and a sister, Geraldine Hartley.

Jettie Emeline Hinds, 85, of Route 1, Fairview, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born Dec. 7, 1913, at Daybrook, daughter of the late Elic and Violet Tennant Kennedy. She was a member of the Pumpkin Center Church of Christ.
She is survived by eight children and spouses, George Hinds, Mabel Parrish and Ruby Slamick, all of Fairview, Alberta Hinds, Margaret and Leroy Haun, and Nell Hinds, all of Brunswick, Ohio, Carol and Frank Fida, and Mary and Robert Kidd, all of Cleveland; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Hinds; two sons, Walter Hinds and William Hinds Jr.; five brothers, Charlie Kennedy, Rex Kennedy, George Kennedy, Wesley Kennedy and Avil Kennedy; and three sisters, Lettie Bable, Alberta Tennant and Rosie Baysinger.

Word has been received of the death of Nathan Palmer Manchester, 19, of Renick, on Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in an automobile accident near his home.
He was born Jan. 11, 1980, in Morgantown, son of Connie and John Manchester, of Lewisburg.
Beside his parents, he is survived by a sister, Johnna Manchester, of Lewisburg; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Richard N. 'Pete' Spradlin, 59, of Fairmont, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at home.
He was born March 11, 1940, in Bonsack, Va., son of the late Cecil E. Spradlin and Lucille Gray Robertson. He was a machinist and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by four daughters and spouses, Patricia and William Gray, of Radcliff, Ky., Debra and Jesse Lamp, and Tina Marie and Carl Conrad, all of Morgantown, and Sheila Spradlin, of North Carolina; four sisters, Rosalie Schaffer and Fran Roberts, both of Virginia, Mary Ann Clark and Judy Spradlin, both of Pennsylvania; a brother, John Spradlin, of Virginia; four grandchildren, Milinda Gray and Bradley Gray, both of Kentucky, Cheri Beth Conrad and Carl Conrad II, both of Morgantown; 12 nephews; and five nieces.

Guy J. 'Blackie' Pitch Jr., 71, of Grafton Road, Route 1, Independence, died Sunday, Oct, 3, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital.
He also survived by two brothers and spouses, Paul and Erma Brewer, of California, and Art and Norma Pitch, of Oregon.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999 with the Rev. Violet L. Petso officiating. Burial will be in the Halleck Cemetery.
Stanley Kilianski
Stanley Kilianski, 82, of 11602 Vicilia St., Garden Grove, Calif., and formerly of Granville, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif.
He was born Aug. 13, 1917, in Jerome, Pa., son of the late Vincent and Blanche Rosiak Kilianski.
He was an electrician for North American Rockwell for 35 years and was a member of St. Polycarp Catholic Church in Garden Grove.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Pawlak Kilianski; a daughter, Wanda Kilianski Johnson; a son, David Kilianski; two grandchildren, Cody Johnson and Adam Johnson; a great-grandchild and a sister, Mary Pietrowski, of Granville.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe Vincent Kilianski, Frank Kilianski and Walter Kilianski.

Maxine M. Parsons Withers, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Preston County, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in Chancellor Park, Naples, Fla.
She was born July 14, 1912, in Eglan, Preston County, daughter of the late C.E. and Odna M. Markwood.
She graduated from Terra Alta High School and Fairmont State College.
She is survived by her husband, Carter B. Withers; a daughter and spouse, Rebecca P. and James R. Toothman II, of Grafton; a daughter-in-law, Ellen M. Parsons, of Martinsburg; stepdaughter and spouse, Nancy R. and William W. Nichols, of Timonium, Md.; a brother and spouse, James E. and Mary Ellen Markwood, of Naples; grandchildren, Dedorah Chase, Elizabeth Miller, J.R. Jerome M. Taylor
Word has been received of the death of Jerome M. Taylor, 73, of Bellevue, Wash., formerly of Morgantown, on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1926, in Morgantown, son of the late Leland H. and Alice M. Taylor and Viola W. Taylor.
He graduated from Morgantown High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944-46. He graduated from the University of Washington, earning an electrical engineering degree. He retired in 1988 after 38 years with Boeing's Aerospace Division. He then enjoyed boating and cruising the Queen Charlotte Islands and southeast Alaska. He was an advanced pilot of the U.S. Power Squadron, for which he taught boating safety classes.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marian Dunning Taylor; two sons, Peter Dunning, of Bellevue, and David Leland, of Minneapolis; his ex-wife, Annette; two sons and spouses, Mark and Ann Hartman, of Camano Island, Wash., and Jeffrey and Lori Patterson, of Bellevue; a sister, Cynthia Woodward, of Fairmont; and two grandchildren, Sam and Emma Patterson, of Bellevue.

Paul Awman Ringer, 79, of Albright, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Louis A. Johnson VA Hospital, Clarksburg.
He was born July 31, 1920, in Woolen Mills, son of the late John W. and Stella Myrtle Awman Ringer.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of VFW Post 826, Kingwood.
He is survived by his wife, Annalene V. Whytsell Ringer, of Albright; a son, Richard A. 'Dick' Ringer, of Chambersburg, Pa.; a daughter, Paula K. Ringer, of Herndon, Va.; two granddaughters, Melisa Lavery, of Gastonia, N.C., and Marcia Fletcher, of Pitma n, N.J.; and two great-grandsons, Harrison Lavery and Zachery Fletcher.

John Charles Titus
John Charles Titus, 81, of Arthurdale, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at Preston Memorial Hospital, Kingwood.
He was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Rushcreek Township, Ohio, son of the late Howard Gleston and Hazel Deardorff Titus.
He moved to West Virginia from Ohio in 1952, and retired from Sterling Faucet. He owned Titus Machine Shop and was a private pilot.
He is survived by his children and spouses, Alan Titus, and Fran and Steve Blosser, all of Reedsville, Richard and Donna Titus, of Arthurdale, Jeannine and Thomas Woodall, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Noel and Ron Borgen, of Sequim, Wash.; sisters and spouses, Vilda Wolever, of East Liberty, Ohio, Catherine and Charles Chamberlain, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Laonta and George Coder, of West Mansfield, Ohio; grandchildren, John E. Robert Swartwout
Robert Swartwout, 77, of Hillview Drive, Morgantown, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at home.
He was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Chicago Heights, Ill., son of the late Margaret E. and Edgar C. Swartwout.
He was a professor emeritus of electrical engineering at WVU. He graduated from Chicago's Tilden Technical High School in 1939, and earned a BSEE degree in 1948 and an MSEE in 1950 from Illinois Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in 1963 from the University of Illinois. He worked for Commonwealth Edison in Chicago (1932-42), was in the U.S. Army Signal Corps (1942-46) and was an electronic engineer with Farnsworth Television and Radio, Fort Wayne, Ind. (1950-58). He taught at the University of Illinois (1958-62) and at WVU from 1962 until he retired in 1987. He was a member of the WVU Senate Executive Committee and was chairman of the Faculty Senate, was a member of the executive committee for the graduate school, was a charter member of the Academy o f Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and of the Multiple-Valued Logic Technical Committee of the IEEE Computer Society, and was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi societies. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Morgantown a nd the West Virginia Baptist Convention, having been its president in 1993-94.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, June Drum Swartwout; three sons and spouses, Donald Swartwout and Susan Howard, of Columbus, Ohio, James and Brenda Swartwout, of Cincinnati, and Peter and Daralynne Swartwout, of Pittsburgh; a brother and spouse, Raymond and Shirley Swartwout, of Downers Grove, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Jessica Howard, Benjamin Swartwout, Paul Swartwout, Jennifer Swartwout, Maxwell Swartwout and Miranda Swartwout.

Wilma Moats, 58, of Gettysburg, Pa., formerly of Terra Alta, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Gettysburg.
She was born March 21, 1941, daughter of the late Gladys Summers.
She is survived by four sons, Clifton R. Moats, David L. Moats and Darren R. Moats, all of Gettysburg, and Rodney A. Moats, of Reedsville; two daughters, Wilma J. Tasker, of Reedsville, and Phillis A. Tasker, of Kingwood; six stepgrandchildren, Donna J. Sines, of Lancaster, Pa., Ray A. Moats Jr. and Dean W. Moats, both of York, Pa., Billy J. She was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Fairmont, daughter of the late James and Edna Crites Davis.
She was a member of Quiet Dell Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, William 'Bill' Blosser, of Fairmont; a son and spouse, Tom and Linda Moore, of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter and spouse, Lisa and Neil Bennett, of Wheeling; a stepson and spouse, Edward and Lillian Blosser, of Atlanta; a stepdaughter and spouse, Diane and Bob Wagner, of Fairmont; a brother, James Davis, of Hampton, Va.; and four grandchildren, Cathy Anderson, of Charlotte, N.C., Amanda Moore, of Bend, Ore., and Jason Bennett and Ashley Bennett, both of Wheeling.

Madaline V. Shears
Madaline V. Shears, 84, of Fairmont, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Wishing Well Health Center.
She was born Sept. 10, 1915, in Marion County, daughter of the late W.H. and Ora Holbert Doty.
She worked as a housekeeper for several years and was active with Marion County Senior Citizens. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by two nephews, William Junior Fox, of Osage, and Dale E. Fox, of Fairmont; a great-niece, Marilyn Sanchez, of Phoenix; four stepchildren, Mary Hilling, Alice Jackson and Joe Zackery, all of Morgantown, and Paul Zackery, of Silver Springs, Fla.; and 19 stepgrandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Shears, in 1986; two brothers, Edgar Doty and Harley 'Mutt' Doty; three sisters, Agnes Prentice, Eva Hayes and Gladys Doty; and a stepson, Pete Zackery.
At her request, there will be no funeral home visitation. She was cremated. Her ashes will be buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Kingwood. Frey Home for Funerals, Fairmont, is in charge of arrangements.
Myral Tolle
Myral Tolle, 93, of Fairmont (Grassy Run community), died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Marion Health Care, Fairmont.
She was born March 17, 1906, at Boothsville, daughter of the late Arah Martin, and was raised in the home of her late aunt and uncle, Allie Martin Henry and Thomas Flemington Henry.
She was a member of Cross Road Community Center and of its board of directors for 35 years. She volunteered with the 4-H Club. She was a member of a quilting group for many years. She was active in Homemakers Club and Gassey Run Bethel Church.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Willis E. 'Bill' Pride, of Grassy Run; four grandchildren and spouses, Leslie Pride, and Karen and Jim Nichols, all of Fairmont, Janey and Paul Curry, of Hundred, and Sandie and James Graves, of Oklahoma; and eight great-grandchildren, Mystee Bramble, Adrienne Nichols, Jillian Nichols, Miles Graves, Taylor Jane Graves, Ryan Curry, Joel Curry and Jared Curry.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Chester Tolle, in August 1963; her daughter, Doris Jean Pride, in July; two brothers, Charles Weaver and John Weaver; and four sisters, Mary Negy, Frankie Hayhurst, Eleanor Robinson and Sarah Blumetto.

Arden M. 'Jim' Hunt Jr., formerly of Morgantown, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at his residence in North Cape May, N.J.
He was born Sept. 25, 1946, and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Hunt; a son, Robert Arden Hunt; three daughters, Tina Marie Hunt, Tonya Michelle Evans and Shannon Marie Boyd, all of New Jersey; a brother, Jay L. Hunt, of Core; and his mother, Virginia C. Hunt, of Morgantown.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arden M. Hunt Sr.; a brother, Abner Thomas Hunt; and his grandmother, Lelah Hunt.

Racheal Catherine Murray, 84, of Dellslow, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital.
She was born May 26, 1915, in Oakland, Md., daughter of the late Samuel and Rosie DeWitt McCrobie.
She attended Mellon Chapel United Methodist Church. She was formerly employed at Morgan Shirt Factory and St. Vincent Pallotti Hospital until 1969. She retired from WVU.
She is survived by her husband, Otha Loren Murray; two daughters and spouses, Anna Lee Mayfield and the late Edward 'Sonny' Mayfield, of Dellslow, and Lucille Marie and Robert Cassino, of Morgantown; four sons and spouses, Lorn Ellwood and Kathleen Murray, and Arthur Riley and Carolyn 'Kay' Murray, Samuel Ernest and Jane Murray, all of Morgantown, and Terrylee Paul and Jackie Murray, of Richard; a brother and spouse, Stewart and Jean McCrobie, of Accident, Md.; a sister and spouse, Pauline and Lawrence Lewis, of Accident; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.

Ardeth C. Machesney
Ardeth C. Machesney, 90, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital.
She was born June 11, 1909, in Holden, daughter of the late James and Kenova Ferguson Chambers.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She was secretary of the Women's Auxiliary for four years and chairman of the Altar Guild for three years. She attended West Virginia University and Morgantown Business College. She was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for 23 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Reach-to-Recovery Organization with the American Cancer Society, resigning after eight years as Monongalia County chairman. She was an active member of PE O, Chapter B.
She is survived by a son and spouse, Dr. J. Douglas and Carolyn Machesney, of Athens; a daughter and spouse, Ann and Philip Simon; four grandchildren, Maj. John Machesney, of Fort Knox, Ky., Dr. Christopher Simon, of Atlanta, Heather Machesney, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Stephanie Simon, of Morgantown; a great-grandchild, Leah Machesney, of Fort Knox; a sister, Aretta C. Williamson, of Granville; and a brother, James F. Chambers, of Northfield, Ohio.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Machesney, on Nov. 4, 1994; a sister, Irona C. Williams; and two brothers, Ogle and Thurman Chambers.
Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, and at Wesley United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, until 11 a.m. service with Dr. Kenneth A. Maxine M. Casteel
Maxine M. Casteel, 63, of Friendsville, Md., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in Cumberland (Md.) Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 10, 1936, in Friendsville, daughter of the late Ronald and Anna Hose Lish.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne M. Casteel, of Confluence, Pa.; four sons, Ronnie Casteel, of Confluence, Jimmy Casteel, of Oakland, Michael Casteel, of Bruceton Mills, and Jeremiah Casteel, of Friendsville; a sister, Grace Armour, of Lake Wales, Fla.; a brother, Owen Dietz, of Middletown, Pa.; and 10 grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Lager and Beatrice Loudis.
Friends may call at Carl R. Spear Funeral Home, Brandonville, from 7-9 p.m. Friday. Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, with speaker Jimmie Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Parnell Cemetery, Cuzzart.
