Dolly Marie Metheny
Dolly Marie Metheny, 84, of Terra Alta, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at home, after a long illness. She was born May 26, 1916, in Lake Ford, daughter of the late Bruce and Reba Teets Dodge. She was a homemaker and also assisted her husband in bookkeeping for their service station and mining operations. She was a charter member of Faith United Methodist Church in Cranesville and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Terra Alta Homemakers. She enjoyed reading and working outdoors. She is survived by four sons and spouses, Duwaine and Betty Metheny, of Tunnelton, Ernest and Peggy Metheny and Howard and Barbara Metheny, all of Terra Alta, and Everett and Beverly Metheny, of Short Gap; 10 grandchildren, Cheryl Stevens, Roger and Jerry Metheny, Gary and Kevin Metheny, Lisa Metheny Carpenter, Bradley Metheny, Kim Metheny Trujillo, Tim Metheny and Jennifer Robinson; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arlington D. Metheny, whom she married in 1933; a daughter, Elva Lorie Metheny; and a brother, Clarence Dodge. Robert L. Griffin
Robert L. Griffin, 51, of Dilliner, Pa., died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. He was born Dec., 29, 1949, in Morgantown, son of the late Sanford and Virginia Hart Griffin. He was a 1968 graduate of Mapletown High School and was formerly employed as a heavy equipment operator in area strip mines. He was a member of the UMWA, FOE Post No. 1932 in Point Marion, the Bobtown Polish Club and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by two sons, Darel P. Griffin, of Carbondale, Pa., and Guy J. Griffin, of Smithfield, Pa.; a daughter, Kelly J. Ankrom, of Waynesburg, Pa.; three grandchildren, Gage, Reid and Lexus Griffin; a sister, M. Jaretta Faust, of Carlsbad, N.M.; and a brother, Sanford Griffin, of Smithfield, Pa. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Richard R. Herod Funeral Home. Teresa Rittenhouse Zell
Teresa Rittenhouse Zell, 32, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Friday, March 23, 2001, at home. She was born July 26, 1968, in Morgantown, daughter of Ethel Rittenhouse-Voss, of Tucson, Ariz., and Ron Rittenhouse, of Morgantown. She was a 1985 National Honor Society graduate of Manassas Park High School in Virginia, and received her bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1991 from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. She moved to Tucson in 1995 where she was employed as a certified addiction counselor with Cope Behavioral Services until her early retirement due to long-term illness. She will be remembered as a woman of substance, who was persistent and able to bounce back from life's challenges. She is also survived by two sisters, Ciann and Andrea Rittenhouse, of Westover; her stepmother, Mary Ellen Rittenhouse, of Westover; two aunts, Viola Wilson-Bush, of Everettsville, and Georgia Beaslye, of California; aunts and uncles, Harvey and Dolly Wilson, of Morgantown, and John Wilson III and Rae Lynn Wilson, of Tucson; two grandmothers, Willa Mae Wilson, of Everettsville, and Mamie Rittenhouse, of Fairmont; cousins, Andy Wilson, Johnny Wilson, nieces and nephews, including Mika and Shae Camille, o f Morgantown, Ashleigh Nicolle Hostutler, of Morgantown, Olivia Riley, of Westover, and Alecia, Tiffany and Julie Wilson, of Tucson. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, John Wilson and Russell Lee Rittenhouse Jr.; a cousin, Nadine Hostutler; and her uncle, Jesse Pillars. Steve P. Slavensky
Steve P. Slavensky, 89, of New Hill Community, Cassville, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at home. He was born March 7, 1912, in Brier Hill, Pa., son of the late Steve Sr. and Catherine Blozavich Slavensky. He was a retired coal miner and a member of UMW Local 1058. He was a member of St. Theresa/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church and a former member of the mission church of St. Ursula, where he was awarded an Apostolic blessing from His Holiness John Paul II, in recognition of his many years of volunteer service. He was an usher at St. Ursula's Catholic Church for many years. He is survived by four daughters and spouses, Mary Margaret and retired Gen. Leonard Perroots, of Manassas, Va., Barbara and Ronald Eye, of Westover, Joyce and Thomas Kilionski, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Sandra and Guy Panrell, of Morgantown; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann Pompura Slavensky, who died in March 1980; a grandson, Craig Kilionski; two granddaughters, Leandra Kilionski and Tonya Eye; a sister, Mary Slavensky Lynch; and three brothers, Paul Slavensky, Matthew Slavensky and Joseph Slavensky. Mary I. Brotherton, 69, of Morgantown, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born June 21, 1931, in Fairmont, daughter of the late James and Julia Ruben Phillips. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, the Rev. Earl F. Brotherton, of Morgantown; a son, Earl Brotherton Jr., of Bruceton Mills; a daughter and spouse, Barbara and Stephen Barnum, of Morgantown; three grandchildren and two spouses, L.J. and Amy Haines, of Morgantown; Bryan and Jennifer Haines, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Rachel Haines, of Charlotte, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Haines, Reagan Haines and Tyler Haines; two brothers, James Phillips, of Redding, Calif., and Anthony Phillips, of Morgantown; two sisters, Frances Juristy, of Lorain, Ohio, and Carol Hoskins, of Morgantown. Dorothy Agnes Pyles
Dorothy Agnes Pyles, 88, of Farmington, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born June 23, 1912, in Metz, daughter of the late Jefferson Lawrence and Lulu Bell Wells Brookover. She was a faithful member of the Church of God of Prophecy, in Katy, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years and was active in church functions. She also liked to quilt. She was a graduate of Farmington High School and a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia "Patty" Bland, of Farmington; three sons, Bernard Pyles, of Streetsboro, Ohio, Lawrence Pyles, of Worthington, and Carl Pyles, of Fairmont; a brother, Thomas Brookover, of New Cumberland; a sister, Lavanda Vandergrift, of Fairmont; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Pyles, on April 1, 1987; two daughters, Katherine Pyles and JoAnn Green; and a granddaughter, Kayla Bland. Nellie Shay Reese
Nellie Shay Reese, 95, of Morgantown, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at her daughter's home in Berkeley Springs. She was born Aug. 9, 1905, daughter of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Bolyard Shay. She grew up in Denver (Preston County). She was a Sunday school teacher for 70 years and a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church for 65 years. She was a member of Mount Morris Senior Citizens and the Union Farm Women's Club. She was a member of TOPS and also graduated to KOPS. She is survived by a son, Roy J. Reese, of Des Plaines, Ill.; three daughters and spouses, Kathleen McClure and Jarvis Eldred and Betty Phillips and Bill Dean, all of Morgantown, and Louise and Robert Hoard, of Berkeley Springs; two daughters-in-law, Ida J. Reese, of North Carolina, and Frankie Reese, of Westover; a sister, Marie Hossman, of Naperville, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell I. Reese; two sons, Arthur C. and Ray R. Reese; two sons-in-law, William McClure and Willis Phillips; a daughter-in-law, Mary Propst Reese; two brothers, Everett "Red" and Waldo "Buck" Shay; and a sister, Juanita Simpson. David Edward Vincent
David Edward "Ed" Vincent, 54, of Fairmont, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born March 15, 1947, in Marion County, son of the late David Eugene and Phyllis Eileen Rager Vincent. He was a construction worker. He worked at Harman's Construction in Taylor County and Smith Construction in Charleston. He was a 1965 graduate of East Fairmont High School. He enjoyed working, going to flea markets, animals, gardening and being outdoors. He is survived by his grandmother, Pearl Vincent, of Fairmont; a brother, Mark Vincent, of Monongah; three sisters and two spouses, Margaret and William Schleicher and Phyllis Jeanie Riffee, all of Fairmont, and Garnetta and Gary Domico, of Monongah; three nephews and two spouses, Mark and Elizabeth Vincent, of Monongah, William and Melissa Schleicher II and Michael Schleicher, all of Fairmont; a niece and spouse, Shawna and Mark Six, of Fairmont; and three great-nephews, Brent and Camden Six and David Vincent. Mazie Ellen Evans, 90, formerly of Point Marion, Pa., died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Jeannette, Pa., daughter of the late Edward and Myrtle Balsinger Hollis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Point Marion and the Ladies Anti-Can't Bible Class. She was a former member of the OES and the Rebekahs. She is survived by four daughters and spouses, Lucille Chessie, of Dilliner, Pa., Blossom and Robert McClure, of Youngwood, Pa., Ann and Joseph Michotte and Carol and Louis Mahalic, all of Orlando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl I. Evans; a brother, Raymond Hollis; and a sister, Ruth Mansberry. Friends may call at Richard R. She was born March 19, 1910, in Gilmore County, daughter of the late Patsy and Rose Necistro Perry. She was a retired employee of the Davis-Lynch Glass Co. She was a member of the American Flint Glassmaker, the Columbian Federation Ladies Auxiliary 42, and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. She is survived by two sons and spouses, Dominick and Mary Stefanizzi, of Morgantown, and Louis and Irene Stefanizzi, of Houston; a brother and spouse, Sam and Elvira Perry, of Washington, Pa.; two sisters, Theresa Belcastro and Anne Van Kirk, both of Washington; five grandchildren and three spouses, Judy and Ken Lett, Linda, Jim and Chris, John and Michael and Andrea Stefanizzi; three great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vincent James Stefanizzi; a brother, John Perry; and four sisters, Mary Merlo, Barbara Sieracki, Angeline Oliver and Jenny Schultz. Thelma J. Tenney Kane
Thelma Jean Tenney Kane, 74, of French Creek, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 20, 1927, in Hemlock, daughter of the late Samuel McCann and Flora Currence Tenney. She worked for 30 years for Westinghouse in New Jersey and was a member of the Rock Cave Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. She is survived by two stepsons, Andrew Joseph and Francis Richard Kane, both of Hartford, Conn.; a sister, Leona Curry, of Newburg; and two brothers, Paul Tenney, of Point Marion, Pa., and Samuel Tenney, of Warren, Ohio. She was born May 29, 1915, in Windber, Pa., daughter of the late Bert and Julia Szabo Molnar. She was a member of Mellons Chapel Church, Dellslow, and was a retired registered nurse from Morgantown University Hospital. She was an avid camper. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harold W. Katherine J. Wise Lemley
Katherine Jane Wise Lemley, 88, of Mannington, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Oct. 10, 1912, in Marion County, daughter of the late John Wesley and Narcissus Mason Wise. She was retired from the Marion County Board of Education as a cook for 30 years. She was the oldest member of the Metz Methodist Church. She was a homemaker. She is survived by three sons and two spouses, James and Martha Lemley, of Saint Marys, Charles Lemley, of Las Vegas, and Jack and Leona Lemley, of Metz; eight grandchildren, Rick, Robert, Michael, Allan, Patrick, Randy, Sabrina and Linda; 15 great-grandchildren, Ricky Lee, Cameron, Alex, Hunter, Rae, Jacob, Tye, Robert, Katherine, Fallon, Ryan, Matthew, Michelle Lemley, Allan and Aaron Barker; and a great-great-grandchild, Samantha Lemley. Wilbert 'Wib' Mayle
Wilbert "Wib" Mayle, 78, of Route 1, Shumaker Ridge, in Thornton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born March 16, 1923, in Taylor County, son of the late Jefferson Davis Mayle and Lucy Jane Croston Mayle. He retired in 1986 from the B&O Railroad. He was a trackman with more than 39 years of service. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was Methodist. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He is survived by 11 children and spouses, Delford and Viola Sue Mayle, of Canton, Ohio, Judy and Terry White, of Lawrenceville, Ga., Julia Mayle, of Canton, Durley Mayle, at home, Dennis Mayle, of Canton, Eleby Taylor, of Canton, Jefferson Davis Mayle, of Canton, Elda and Roger Harold, of Hot Spring, Va., Zendell Mayle, at home, fraternal twins, Erma and Dennis Mayle, of Grafton, and Emma and Tani Taylor, of Canton; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Cox, of Columbus, Ga. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Parsons Mayle, in August 1977; eight brothers, Sherman, Uley, Richard, Melvin, Oney, Laco, Herbert and a brother in infancy; and a grandson, Timmy Mayle. William E. Locke
William E. "Bill" Locke, 80, of Katy Community, Marion County, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born April 18, 1920, in Marion County, son of the late Benjamin and Amy Wiley Locke. He worked briefly at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Fairmont. He later worked as a machinist and tool maker for Charles Phillips Tool Co. of Mannington for 14 years, then for Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory of Keyser and most recently for Mundell Machine for nearly 10 years where he retired. He enjoyed following the WVU football and basketball teams. He was Baptist and a member of the Katy Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also enjoyed gardening. He is survived by two sons and spouses, Barry L. and Barbara Locke, of Shinnston, and Robin L. and Nancy Locke, of Jane Lew; three daughters and a spouse, Linda L. Locke, of Katy, Nancy L. Zicafoose, of Katy, and Karen and Travis Thorne, of Gladwin, Mich.; a brother and spouse, Charles and Virginia Locke, of Rivesville; and four grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Zicafoose, and Bryan and Kaitlin Thorne. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia M. Hickman Locke; two brothers, Alvin and Neal Locke; and a sister, Artola Dowdy. Virginia Lee Davis
Virginia Lee Davis, 71, of Fairmont, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Harker Heights, Texas. She was born April 8, 1929, in Mill Creek, daughter of the late Clarence and Nellie Stotts Currence. She was a long-time resident of Fairmont. She enjoyed gardening and quilt making. She has won many awards for her quilts. She formerly worked at Westinghouse and retired from the Owens-Illinois Glass Plant. She is survived by two daughters and spouses, Linda Gonzales and Richard Malcomb, with whom she made her home, and Constance "Connie" Gonzales and Ricky LeSeur, of Holiday, Fla.; two brothers, including Joe R. Currence, of Midlothian, Va.; two sisters, including Cathy Baker, of Stockton, Md.; an uncle, Charles Boone; two aunts, Louise Boone, of Smithfield, and Opal Gandy, of Poca; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her beloved Pekingese dogs. Friends may call at Davidson-Mancinelli Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carl E. Bauer as celebrant. The Columbian Federation Ladies Auxiliary 42 will conduct a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. Friday. A scripture wake service will be at 8:45 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in East Oak Grove Cemetery.

Nellie Shay Reese
Nellie Shay Reese, 95, of Morgantown, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at her daughter's home in Berkeley Springs. She was born Aug. 9, 1905, daughter of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Bolyard Shay. She grew up in Denver (Preston County). She was a Sunday school teacher for 70 years and a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church for 65 years. She was a member of Mount Morris Senior Citizens and the Union Farm Women's Club. She was a member of TOPS and also graduated to KOPS. She is survived by a son, Roy J. Reese, of Des Plaines, Ill.; three daughters and spouses, Kathleen McClure and Jarvis Eldred and Betty Phillips and Bill Dean, all of Morgantown, and Louise and Robert Hoard, of Berkeley Springs; two daughters-in-law, Ida J. Reese, of North Carolina, and Frankie Reese, of Westover; a sister, Marie Hossman, of Naperville, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell I. Reese; two sons, Arthur C. and Ray R. Reese; two sons-in-law, William McClure and Willis Phillips; a daughter-in-law, Mary Propst Reese; two brothers, Everett "Red" and Waldo "Buck" Shay; a sister, Juanita Simpson; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Reese and Kira Harris. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, with the Rev. Frederic McAllister officiating. Burial will be in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens. McCulla Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lillie M. Shafer Turner
Lillie Maude Shafer Turner, 91, of Ravenswood, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Ravenswood Village Center. She was born Jan. 28, 1910, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Thomas E. Shafer and Maude Howell Shafer. She was a faithful homemaker and longtime member of Second Baptist Church in Ravenswood. She is survived by two sons, Mitchell L. Turner, of Morgantown and Bryce E. Turner, of Ravenswood; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold F. Turner; and 10 of her 11 siblings. Friends may call at Roush Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. Friday. Service will be 10 a.m. at Second Baptist Church in Ravenswood with Pastor David McClain officiating. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Morgantown.
