David Carroll Layman, 53, of Eglon, died April 15, 2001, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, in Oakland, Md.
He was born Aug. 8, 1947, in Cumberland, Md., son of Sheridan William and Nina Corrine Pifer Layman.
He was a coal miner and a member of Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, UMW Local 1289, Thomas Fairfax Lodge 174 and the OBOGUS Society.
He is also survived by his wife, Lois Jeanette Winters Layman, whom he married Nov. 29, 1969; two sons, James Carroll Layman, of Corinth, and Aaron William Layman, of Buffalo, N.Y.; a brother, Charles Leon Layman, of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Brendan Michael Haley, Charles James Goff Layman and Johnathan Roy Goff Layman.

Joseph Gantle
Joseph Gantle, 73, of Point Marion, Pa., died Monday, April 16, 2001, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born Nov. 11, 1927, in Arnettsville, son of the late Charles and Susan Kovach Gantle.
He retired from the Point Marion Foodland, where he was the meat manager for nearly 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean conflict, and a member of St. Hubert's R.C. Church and VFW Post 747, both in Point Marion.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Carpenter Gantle; five children and spouses, Sue Gantle, of Point Marion, Joann and Jerry Yocabet, of New Salem, Pa., Patricia and Dean Morris, of Uniontown, Pa., Joseph K. Gantle, of Isabella, Pa., and James C. Gantle, of Point Marion; his fiancee, Karen Cunningham; a sister, Helen Biro, of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Megan Yocabet, Allen and Joshua Morris, and Justin and Jessica Gantle; and two nephews, James and Brent Biro.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Catherine L. Jenkins
Catherine L. Jenkins, 65, of R.D. 1, Lake Lynn, Pa., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 26, 1935, in York Run, Pa., daughter of the late Wilbert and Evanell King Umble.
She was a member of the Bible Church of God in Carolina. She was formerly employed as a cook, waitress and seamstress and enjoyed working with flowers, crocheting and teaching ceramics.
She is survived by three brothers, Orville Umble, of Woodbridge, Pa., Robert Umble, of Smithfield, Pa., and James Calvin Umble, of Buckhannon; and a stepson, Michael Jenkins.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Junior Morgan Jenkins, in November 1968; a sister, Joanna Doty; and a brother, Gary Umble.

Carl Wayne Thomas
Carl Wayne Thomas, 63, of Route 4, Grafton, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 28, 1937, in Jollytown, Pa., son of Burnette Liming Thomas, of Burton, and the late Ralph J. Thomas.
He was employed with Westinghouse and Phillips with 39 1/2 years of service. He served for three years in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Clay-Battelle High School. He was a member of the IUE CIO union and the Whitehall Church of Christ for 41 years, where he served as deacon for 21 years. He was a former member of Liming Ridge Church of Christ. He dedicated his life to his family, home and church.
He is also survived by his wife of 41 years, Josephine Hullderman Thomas; a daughter, Melanie Jo Thomas, of Montgomery, Ala.; two brothers and a spouse, Garold Thomas, of Woodbridge, and Dennis L. and Rose Thomas, of Burton; and two sisters and spouses, Bernice and Bob Crihfield, of Metz and Linda and Dave Tennant, of Wadestown.

William Ralph Cutright
William Ralph Cutright, 78, of Fairmont, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Monongalia County, son of the late Alonzo and Effie Everly Cutright.
He worked as a coal miner for the South Union Coal Company at Edna, near Everettville. He also worked as a landscaper. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His hobbies were gardening, landscaping and woodworking. He was a member of UMWA.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Menefee Cutright; two stepsons and a spouse, James Deems, of Cleveland, and Alan and Penny Sawitski, of Wheeling; a stepdaughter, Debra Miller, of Fairmont; a brother and spouse, Gerald and Dorothy Cutright, of Morgantown; a half brother, Kenneth Lytton, of Oklahoma; a sister, Laurene Tucker, of Rivesvillle; and four stepgrandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Imogene Furgason Cutright; and two stepbrothers, Edward Rohr and Earl Lytton.

Gordon Eddy
Gordon R. Eddy, 77, of Fairmont, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the Arbors at Fairmont, after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Monongalia County, son of the late Dempsey and Malinda Ella Tennant Eddy.
He had formerly worked for 13 years with Fairmont Glass and Paint, 16 years with Eastern Gas and Fuel, and 20 years with Francis Engineering, where he served as a welder. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board, the Communion Committee, and was a trustee of the church. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Betty J. Eddy; two stepsons and spouse, Marvin and Karen Rowan, of Fairmont, and Richard L. Rowan, of Millersville community; two sisters, Grace Barr, of Fairview, and Anna Wolfe, of New Salem, Pa.; and four stepgrandchildren, Jeremy Rowan, Jace Rowan, Christopher Rowan and Stephanie Rowan.
He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Donald Eddy, Richard Eddy, Raymond Eddy, Marvin Eddy and Keith Eddy.

George H. Vergine
George Herman Vergine, 86, of Silver Spring, Md., died Jan. 15, 2001, of cardiac arrest.
He was born Nov. 4, 1914, in Lafayette, Ind.
He retired in 1970 from the National Security Agency as a senior cryptanalyst. After brief stints as an architectural draftsman in various areas of the country, including Fairmont, he worked for the National Security Agency for more than 20 years. He graduated cum laude from American University, and with high honors from the University of Maryland with a degree in architecture. He was also a member of the American Institute of Architects. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, with an Army Si gnal Corps detachment in England. His detachment worked with the British Army in breaking enemy codes. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the British Empire Medal.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Boyce Vergine.

Samuel Frederick Stack
Samuel Frederick "Johnny" Stack, 73, of 104 Memorial Drive, Greer, S.C., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, after a brief illness.
He was born May 28, 1927, in Inman, S.C., son of the late Carl William and Julia Culbreth Stack.
He had made his home in Greer since 1946, when he returned from World War II, serving with the 3rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army. He attended the University of Mississippi, Auburn University, graduated from Wofford College in 1949 and studied at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Following graduation from college, he was athletic director at the Greer plant of J.P. Stevens (Victor-Monaghan) and then shipping clerk for Monaghan Mill in Greenville. He became associated with the First Baptist Church of Greer in 1953 and served as youth director and later as Minister of Education until 1978. He was appointed in 1978 as consultant in church community ministries for the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board, assigned to the Greenville Baptist Association, from which he retired in 1992.
Denominational offices held include: president of the South Carolina Baptist Training Union Convention, the South Carolina Religious Education Association and the South Carolina Baptist Convention Task Force on the Economically Disadvantaged. Following his retirement he was a piano accompanist for Ms. South Carolina Senior America, vocalist Margie Crowley, performing numerous programs for senior adults in South Carolina. He received several community service awards: Sertoma International Service to Man kind in 1982, Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year in 1992, Woodmen of the World Outstanding Citizen in 1995 and Greer Lions Club Man of the Year in 1996. He was a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church, where he was a teacher and pianist in the children's de partment for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Evelyn Bryson Stack; three sons and spouses and their children, Samuel Frederick Stack Jr. Ph.D., Linda Shelley Stack, twins Ashley Elizabeth Stack and Mary Katherine Stack and Samuel Bryson Stack, all of Morgantown, John Timothy Stack, Esquire, Ann Moore Stack and John Timothy Stack Jr., all of Columbia, Joseph Frederick Stack, Teresa Hatcher Stack and Andrew Michael Stack, all of Taylors; a sister, Dorothy Ann Stack Lister, of Greer; and a sister-in-law, Do ttie Mason Bryson, of Greer.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl William Stack Jr., of Charlotte, N.C.

Charles R. Jackson
Charles Roosevelt Jackson, 67, died Sunday, April 15, 2001.
He was born June 26, 1933, in Star City, son of the late Grover Cleveland Jackson and Mamie Lee Williams Jackson. He was the last-born son of 18 children.
He graduated from Monongalia High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1954, as a medic during the Korean War. Following his service in the military, he attended WVU, studying argriculture. Later, he served on the City Council in Osage. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, and a member of the Farm Bureau Association. He will be remembered for his love of farming. While working for Ford Motor Co. for more than 20 years, he continued to use his agricultural talent to garden and bless those around him with an abundance of farm-raised livestock, greens, tomatoes, corn and many other vegetables.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Doris; two sons, Roosevelt Jackson Jr., of Indianapolis, and Michael Leavell, of Xenia, Ohio; five daughters and spouses, Joycelynn and David Bradley, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jeri and Kevin Dokes, of Huber Heights, Ohio, Janet and Isaac Corney, of Dayton, Ohio, Jina Jackson, of Ypsilanti, Mich. and Micala Leavell, of San Diego, Calif.; four sisters and spouses, Daisy and Robert Jones, of Smithfield, Pa., Mildred Rookard, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Hazel and Edward Marshall, of Manteca, Calif., and Gertrude Alexander, of Rockville, Md.; a brother, William Prude, of Pittsburgh; and 13 grandchildren.

Sharon Kay Hornick, 57, of Route 5, Fairmont, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born May 30, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of the late William and Kathryn Loretta Marsh Hartley.
She was a past member of the Idamay Baptist Church. She had worked at St. Barbara's Nursing Home in Monongah and also at Maurel's Restaurant.

Ada Mae Johnston
Ada Mae Johnston, 64, of West Washington Street, Grafton, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at home.
She was born June 15, 1936, in Grafton, daughter of the late Carl and Dora Boyce Johnston.
She was a retired machine operator with West Virginia Plastics, with more than 30 years of service. She was the president of United Steel Workers of America 15058. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Senior Citizens of Grafton and she was a Presbyterian.
She is survived by a brother, Leo Johnston, of Grafton; a sister, Frances Robinson, of Warren, Ohio; two cousins, Flo Cockrell and Peggy Freeze, both of Grafton; four nephews, William Terry Johnston and Richard Nicola, both of Grafton, Mike Johnston, of Odessa, Fla., and Robert Robinson, of Warren; a niece, Linda Mooney, of Grafton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Nicola; and a niece, Sandra Robinson Towsend.

She was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Independence, daughter of the late Edgell L. and Madge Squires Lambert.
She was a member of the Kingwood Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Karen Lynn Shrout Zeppenfeldt Fabian, 46, of Kingwood, died Monday, April 16, 2001 in Baytown, Texas.
She was born April 14, 1955, in Washington, D.C., daughter of Carl Shrout, of Kingwood and the late Agnes M. Tuzy Shrout.
She was a legal secretary for Rose Padden and Petty L.C. She served in the U.S. Navy.
She is also survived by her husband, Robert Fabian, of Baytown, Texas; a daughter, Stefanie Zeppenfeldt, of Kingwood; a brother, Carl Shrout Jr., of Ashland, Ky.; a sister, Carla Snakenberg, of Marietta, Ga.; a niece, Bethani Snakenberg, of Marietta, Ga.; and a nephew, Jason Snakenberg, of Acworth, Ga.

Evelyn Gertrude Cress, 80, of Morgantown, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Tucker County, daughter of the late Roy Kessler Brown and Florence Augusta Rowe Hibbs.
She was a longtime resident of Crown and was formerly employed by Owens-Illinois glass factory in Fairmont. She was a member of the Arnettsville Farm Women's Association and was a member of the Arnettsville Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed bowling and sports.
She is survived by two sons, Marvin Cress, of Waynesburg, Pa., and Jack Cross, of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters and a spouse, Shelby J. and Charles Sponsler, of Morgantown, and Donna Pigott, of Fairmont; a sister, Maxine Jenkins, of Cortland, Ohio; six grandchildren and spouses, Dr. Jeffrey Sponsler and Charlotte Nelson, and Rory Ty Sponsler, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Tina Louise and Mike Main, and Roy Cress, all of Waynesburg, Bradley Pigott, of Fairmont, and Lisa Cress, of North Carolina; and thre e great-grandchildren, Jason and Jesse Cress, and Sarah Grace Main.

Pauline D. Taylor, 89, of Bruceton Mills, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Lake East Hospital in Painesville, Ohio.
She was born Aug. 2, 1911, in Terra Alta, daughter of the late David and Mollie Casteel Thomas.
She was a member of the Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by a daughter, Juanita Hinebaugh, of Mentor, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Taylor, of Friendsville, Md.; nine grandchildren and spouses, Ervin (Bud) Hinebaugh Jr., of Jefferson, Ohio, Pam Hinebaugh and friend J.D. Pearl L. Bolyard Poling, 88, of Reistertown, Md., formerly of Yates Avenue, Grafton, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Northwest Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1913, in Grafton, daughter of the late Clarence Lewis Bolyard and Florence Louise Choff Bolyard.
She and her late husband owned and operated the former Skippers Inn and Red's Place, which were well known restaurants in the Grafton area. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 3081, of Grafton, and a member of the First Christian Church of Grafton.
She is survived by a daughter, Lois E. Braun, of Reistertown; a son, Terry O. Sandsbury, of Danielston, Conn.; a sister, Mable Plum, of Belington; seven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and other family members including April Stout, of Clarksburg.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph "Red" Poling; four children and spouse, Charles Franklin Sandsbury, Art Poling, Robert and Gloria Poling, and Bill Poling; a grandson, Richie Sandsbury; and three brothers and three sisters.

James A. Carpenter
James Ashley Carpenter, 77, of Fairmont, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born July 22, 1923, in Fairmont, son of the late Columbus Albert and Nellie Duskey Carpenter.
He was retired from the Marion County Board of Education, where he had worked as a carpenter. Before that, he had worked at the A&P Warehouse in Fairmont. He was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 629, the Woodmen of the World and the Marion County Retired Teachers and Service Employees Association. His hobbies included woodworking and crossword puzzles. He was an avid Mountaineer sports fan.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Elutio Carpenter; three sons and spouses, James Richard and Gloria Carpenter, of Quincey, Ill., Randall David and Terry Carpenter, of Cincinnati, and Brian Ashley and Susan Carpenter, of Cary, N.C.; a brother and spouse, Ervin E. and Susan Carpenter, of Sandusky, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Jane Carpenter, of Pleasant Valley, and Beatrice Carpenter, of Hagerstown, Md.; and five grandchildren, Ashley Carpenter, Jamie Carpenter, Matthew Carpenter, Michael Carpenter and Carolyn Carpenter.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rollin Carpenter and Carl Carpenter; and a sister, Marjorie Tims.

Elsie Mills
Elsie Elizabeth Mills, 93, of Morgantown, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.
She was born March 6, 1908, in Monongalia County, daughter of the late Daniel and Annie Schiffbauer.
She was formerly employed by Beaumont Glass Co.
She is survived by a son and spouse, Raymond E. and Linda Mills, of Laurel Point; two daughters and spouses, Phyllis and Olin Hawk, of Petersburg, and Shirley and Richard Herstine, of Morgantown; a daughter-in-law, Shelia A. Mills, of Rivesville; five grandchildren, Robert Mills Jr., Terry Hawk, Rodney Hawk, Rhonda Auville and Kevin Hawk; eight great-grandchildren, Jenna Mills, Kolten Hawk, Kristopher Auville, Chase Hawk, Chance Hawk, Cody Hawk, Payton Hawk and Alyssa Orem; two nephews, William Miller a nd Fred Mills; and a niece, Belinda Simpson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Stewart W. Mills, in May 1942; a son, Robert L. Mills Sr.; three brothers, Arthur Schiffbauer, Earl Schiffbauer and Howard Schiffbauer; and three sisters, Erma Miller, Virginia Howard and Martha Schiffbauer.

Elizabeth Dale
Elizabeth "Libby" Dale, 79, of Mount Morris, Pa., died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Washington (Pa.) Hospital.
She was born May 13, 1921, at Greensboro, Pa., daughter of the late Lindsey Harold and Natellia Doronda Donley Conway.
She was a homemaker and 1939 graduate of Mapletown High School. She had lived in Mount Morris since 1974. She was a member of Mount Morris United Methodist Church and Emerald Chapter No. 135 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbur M. "Sonny" Wilson, whom she married June 28, 1941; and a daughter, Doronda Hathaway, of Murrysville, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Gustev Conway.
Friends may call at Yoskovich Funeral Home, 300 S. Vine St., Carmichaels, Pa., from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Burley D. Tennant Sr.
Burley D. Tennant Sr., 81, of Vermont Avenue, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born May 1, 1919, in Fairview, son of the late Clarence and Lou Brookover Tennant.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal service with 43 years of service. He was previously employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and most recently worked as a financial consultant for the American Advantage Capital Company. He served in Germany and Korea as well as the Normandy Invasion during World War II, and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a graduate of Fairview High School, and an alumnus of West Virginia University. He was a member of the Punkin Center Church of Christ. He was a member of the BPOE No. 294 Fairmont Elks Club, the VFW Post 629 in Fairmont, the American Legion Post 17 of Fairmont, and the Retired Rural Letter Carrier Association. He was an avid bowler and a loyal WVU Mountaineer fan and season ticket holde r for many years.
He is survived by a son and spouse, Burley D. "Butch" Jr. and Jacqeline R. Tennant, of Fairmont; a daughter and spouse, Diane and Rocky Glover, of Abingdon, Va.; a grandson and spouse, J.B. and Shirley Tennant, of Fairmont; a granddaughter, Rebecca "Dee Dee" Tennant, of Blacksburg, Va.; a stepgranddaughter, Niki Brandimarte, of Fairmont; a sister, Dora Ashton, of Clarksburg; and a niece, Carol Lynne McCoy, of Florida, who was raised in his home.

Betty Kines
Betty Kines, 80, of West Boyd Street, Grafton, died at Grafton City Hospital on Thursday, April 19, 2001, after a brief illness.
She was born June 18, 1920, in Grafton, daughter of the late Adolf and Sophia Pytlik Schmuck.
She worked as a receptionist at the Hazel Atlas Factory of Grafton and Owens-Illinois factory in Fairmont, as well as Robert Hall Clothing and Dr. Malone's office, both in Michigan. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Grafton.
She is survived by a foster son, Jeffrey Michael Dodge, of Grafton; two sisters, Virginia Drennan, of Grafton, and Frances Kisner, of Fairmont, Smithtown community; and a special niece and spouse, Carolyn and Bob Pauletta, of Grafton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Claudis S. Kines, in 1953; two brothers, Emmett and Adolf Schmuck; and a sister, Ann Thorn.
