Ronald V. Greathouse
Ronald V. Greathouse, 79, of Masontown, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Oct. 21, 1921, son of the late Vester and Ona Greathouse. He was a retired coal miner from Arkwright Mines with 34 years of service. He liked to fish and hunt and spend time with his family. He served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sally Wolfe Greathouse; three sons, Ronnie, Danny and Carlos Greathouse, all of Masontown; a daughter, Hazel Wolfe, of Masontown; four brothers, Jack Greathouse, of Masontown, Allen Greathouse, of Morgantown, Moody Greathouse, of Arthurdale, and Edgar Greathouse, of South Bend, Ind.; three sisters, Ruby Cale, of Masontown, Brenda Greathouse, of Morgantown and June Nicholson, of Morgantown; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Jerome F. Heard Sr.
Jerome F. Heard Sr., 70, formerly of Bridgeport, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 9, 1931, in Pittsburgh, son of Genevieve M. Heard, of Mount Lebanon, Pa., and the late Bradley S. Heard. He was the former president and recently retired from J&S Business Forms/Vision Business Products, of Bridgeport. He is also survived by his former wife, Joyce E. Heard, of The Heritage nursing home; two sons and spouse, Jerome F. Heard Jr., of Bridgeport, and Steven L. and Jolene Heard, of Lost Creek; three daughters and spouses, Lynda J. Kerns, of Bridgeport, Janice M. and Stanton Phillips, of Aiken, S.C., and Joy L. and Steve Haney, of Princeton; 18 grandchildren, John, Christian, Christopher Jerome and Jennifer Smith, Autumn, Austin and Kyle Davis, Stanton Jr., Joseph and Kaylee Phillips, Corey and Ashley Heard , Josh, Heather and Haley Smith and Tristan, Haley and Trey Haney; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla Kniceley and Zachary Kibodeaux. Rebecca Nicole Shuttlesworth, 3 months, of Tunnelton, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at home. She was born Feb. 14, 2001, in Morgantown, daughter of Kathy Shuttlesworth. She is survived by two brothers, Kevin and Dustin Shuttlesworth; maternal grandparents, Terry Shuttlesworth, of Grafton, and Thelma Hose, of Grafton; two uncles, Benjamin and James Shuttlesworth, both of Grafton, and two aunts, Beverly and Glenda Shuttlesworth, both of Grafton. Plummer Eugene Chisler
Plummer Eugene "Chis" Chisler, 73, of University Avenue, Morgantown, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born June 22, 1927, in Monongalia County, son of the late Plummer and Ruth Lewlis Chisler. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after working 35 years as a mail carrier. He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a 1945 graduate of Morgantown High School, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, and was active with the Red Cross Blood Program. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Jean Guthrie Chisler; two sons, Dale Carroll and spouse Susan Janette Chisler, of Summerville, N.C., and David Eugene Chisler and fiancee Sandra Lear, of Morgantown; a daughter and spouse, Deborah Louise and Charles Queen of Morgantown; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Laurine Sisler Fisher
Laurine Sisler Fisher, 81, of Howland Township, Ohio, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Forum Trumbull Memorial Hospital. She was born March 7, 1920, in Friendsville, Md., daughter of the late David Sisler and Blanche Riley Sisler. She was employed by Copperweld Steel Corp. in the cost department for 251/2 years, until her 1984 retirement. She was active at Bolindale Christian Church for 45 years. She enjoyed quilting and crafts. She is survived by her husband, Milton W. Fisher, whom she married Feb. 14, 1942; two daughters and spouses, Frances and Richard Elder, of Royal Oak, Mich., and Suzan and Richard Harris, of Mooresville, N.C.; a brother, Orville Sisler, of Westminster, Md.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Gladys E. Bowers, 86, of Bounds Circle, Westover, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at her home. She was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Baird, daughter of the late Andrew and Emma Schillingberg. She was a former employee of Sterling Faucet Co. and Galik Electric Co. She was Jewish. She is survived by a son and spouse, Gary and Paulette Bowers, of Hasbrouck, N.J.; two brothers, Andrew Schillingberg and James Schillingberg, of Ohio; and three grandchildren. James Gorby
James C. Gorby, 78, of Hanoverton, Ohio, formerly of New Freeport, Pa., died Monday, May 14, 2001, at home. He was born March 26, 1923, at Cameron, son of the late Broze and Flora Welling Gorby. He was a retired truck driver for Malvern Flue Lining Co. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Tri-County Church of Christ, and American Legion Post 375, of Malvern, Ohio. As a youth he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. of Rockwood, Pa. He is survived by his wife, Myrtleann Gorby; a daughter, Deborah Gorby, of Hanoverton, Ohio; two sons, James R. "Dick" Gorby, of Hartsville, Ohio, and Jack Gorby, of Fairborn, Ohio; two sisters, Alice Kensinger, of Beloit, Ohio, and Mary Shanor, of Beaver Falls, Pa.; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Barbara C. Winters, 63, of Collins Ferry Road, Morgantown, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born April 27, 1938, in Morgantown, daughter of Thelma Kinzey Christopher, of Pisgah, and the late Carlus B. Christopher. She was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church. She was a former coach for the girls softball team in Sistersville for 10 years, and she retired from the business office at Monongalia General Hospital. Jacob Stoffer, 78, of Morgantown, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born Aug. 6, 1922, in New York City, son of the late Howard Stoffer and Yetta Kittay. He was a salesman and an military veteran. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Altman Stoffer; two daughters, Joan Addicks, of Morgantown, and Ellen Stoffer, of Baltimore; three brothers, George Stoffer, Murray Stoffer and Phil Stoffer; and three grandchildren. Irma Marple Lyons
Irma Marple Lyons, 89, of Braddock Heights, Md., formerly of Morgantown, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Vindobona Nursing Home, Braddock Heights, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 22, 1911, daughter of the late Logan L. Lyons and Arta Bell Miller Lyons. She was a graduate of Morgantown High School and Morgantown Business College. She was formerly employed by the City of Morgantown Water Co. and Financial Office. She was also formerly employed by various physicians' offices, University Hospital, and was last employed at the Monongalia County Record Department. She moved from Morgantown in 1987 to live with her sister in Frederick, Md. She is survived by a sister, Marie Campbell, of Frederick; and two nephews and spouses, Richard E. and Cynthia Campbell, of Dothan, Ala., and Kenton L. and Susie Campbell, of Washington, D.C. E. Wayne Shuttlesworth
E. Wayne Shuttlesworth, 92, of Cleveland Avenue, Fairmont, died Monday, May 14, 2001, in Fairmont General Hospital, Fairmont. He was born Feb. 18, 1909, in Little Falls, son of the late A.L. and Mabel Kincaid Shuttlesworth. He was a self-employed handyman, and Protestant. During the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, he was involved in Christian service with God's Bible School, in Cincinnati, and with the Brainerd Indian School, in Hot Springs, S.D. After living and working in Alaska and Florida, he returned to Fairmont, where he retired. He is survived by two sons, Sam Shuttlesworth, of Clarinda, Iowa, and Bob Shuttlesworth, of Connersville, Ind.; two daughters, Erlene Myers and Elayne Hartman, both of North Pole, Alaska; two brothers, Eugene A. Shuttlesworth, of Morgantown, and Ralph Shuttlesworth, of Smithtown; a sister, Helen Elsey, of Grafton; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Dorothy "Dot" Burchinal, 77, of Over Cheat, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at the Point Manor Care Home, Point Marion, Pa. She was born Oct. 6, 1923, in Lake Lynn, Pa., daughter of the late Marshall and Alice Romesburg Graham. She was a graduate of Point Marion High School. She was also a loving homemaker, and an avid golfer who, along with her husband, was one of the founding members of the Pines Country Club, and a member of the Pines Ladies Association. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Frank Earl Burchinal Jr.; a daughter and spouse, Sherrel Nancy and Fabian Montagliani, of Annapolis, Md.; a son and spouse, Frank Earl III and Karen Burchinal, of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Chad Graham Burchinal, of Roanoke, Kara Shannon Burchinal, of Roanoke, Susette Montagliani Graves, of Annapolis, and Phillip Montagliani, of Annapolis; three brothers, Marshall "Moss" Graham, of Point Marion, Milton "Mick" Graham, of Point Marion, and Allen Kent Grah am, of Smithfield, Pa.; and two sisters, Loma Henning, and Rene Pushkarsh, both of Baltimore. Richard Allen Parks, 65, of Daybrook, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 2, 1936, in Orange, N.J., son of the late Robert and Elsie Parks. He had been employed as a plumber and truck driver. Dorothy L. Raber, 78, of Lawnwood Street, Morgantown, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at her home. She was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Sabraton, daughter of the late Joe R. and Erma B. Shumaker Foor. She was a country music lover, having played fiddle with groups such as Cowboy Jack and West Virginia Ramblers as early as the 1940s. She also loved to paint, never selling her paintings, but just giving them to acquaintances to enjoy. She is survived by a brother and spouse, William L. "Pete" and Thelma Gibson Foor, of Morgantown; a brother-in-law, Robert L. West, of Morgantown; two nieces and spouses, Joyce and Robert Clay, of Reedsville, and Sharon and Frank DeWitt, of Morgantown; two nephews and a spouse, Robert "Bobby" West, of Morgantown, and Aaron and Edith Gibson, of Morgantown; two great-nieces, Kearstin Clay and Ami LeMasters; a great-nephew, Adam LeMasters; and a daughter-in-law, Deliah Raber, of Lompoc, Calif. Airetta Hunt
Airetta Hunt, 81, of Canton, Ohio, formerly of Burton, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Aultman Hospital in Canton. She was born May 31, 1919, in Burton, daughter of the late Jennie Lemley Huggins, and granddaughter of the late Martha Jane and Anthony Lemley, who raised her. She was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Burton. She was also a graduate of Hundred High School and was employed for several years at Westinghouse in Fairmont. She is survived by a son, Kim Hunt, of Canton; a sister and spouse, Lottie and Fred Brown, of Wheeling; two brothers and spouses, Charles and Kathy Huggins, of Chicago, and Kenneth and Lois Huggins, of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother-in-law, Ralph Martino; and a sister-in-law, Jean Huggins. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Samuel E. Hunt, who died March 4, 2001; two sisters, Betty Morrison and June Martino; and a brother, Melvin Huggins. Colonel Brooks Phillips
Word has been received of the death of Colonel Brooks Phillips, 80, of Colorado Springs, Colo., who died April 26, 2001, at a local care center. He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Blacksville, son of the late Marion R. and Bertha M. Phillips. He graduated from Blacksville High School, and Waynesburg (Pa.) College. He also served 3 1/2 years during World War II aboard the cruiser USS Columbia. His ship is officially credited with the destruction of 27 planes, assisting in sinking one cruiser and one destroyer at the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, and two battleships, one cruiser and o ne destroyer at the Battle of Suriago Straits, as well as participation in nine shore engagements. The major operations in which his ship took part were Guadalcanal, Rennell Island, Consolidation of Solomon Islands, New Georgia Operations, Bougainville, Bismark Archipelago, Western Caroline Islands, Leyte, Luzon and the Balikpapan-Borneo operation. He was a member of the Grace Community Church, in Tempe, Ariz., and for many years was employed as a safety engineer and personnel director for Shell Oil Co. He is survived by his wife, Linda Ann Phillips; two sons, Nelson Phillips, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Tim Phillips, of Beverly Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Melinda Ann Adams, of Raton, N.M.; three grandchildren, Tara Boreyko, Brent Adams and Adrienne Adams; and four brothers, Edward A. Phillips, of Tulsa, Okla., Joseph A. Phillips and Marion R. Phillips Jr., both of Alberta, Canada, and Byron E. Phillips, of Morgantown. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert L. Geneva M. Semans
Geneva M. Semans, formerly of Tower Lane, Westover, died Wednesday May 16, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center after a long illness. She was born Oct. 8, 1911, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Edward and Lilly DeVault Huffman. She was a retired supervisor for Peerless Laundries. She was a retired supervisor for Peerless Laundries. She was a member of the Senior Monongalians Senior Center, where she was an active volunteer for many years. She also loved fishing, bingo and spending time with her three grandchildren. She is survived by a son and spouse, Bill and Sharon Semans, of Morgantown, and three grandchildren, Wendy Semans and Tom Semans, both of Sandusky, Ohio, and Cassi Semans, of Morgantown. Ralph Myron Kester
Ralph Myron Kester, 85, of Mary Lou Retton Drive, Fairmont, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Barb Hatch Personal Care Home, Weirton. He was born April 30, 1916, in Grafton, son of the late Walter and Sarah Belle Kester. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving on the Aleutian Islands with the Alaskan Defense Command. He retired from Westinghouse Corp., Fairmont, with 25 years of service in the maintenance and sealed beam divisions of the plant. He had also worked at Keeley Construction Co. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and had been active in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Coopers Rock. He is survived by a son, Dr. Ralph M. Kester, and his wife, Joan, of Chicago; a daughter, Sara J. Frazier, of Burgettstown, Pa.; a sister, Ruth McCullough, of Prosperity, Pa.; five grandchildren, Douglas Frazier, Duane Frazier, Brian Kester, Randall Kester and Virginia Kester; and several nephews. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Florence Eleanor Smith Kester, in 1997; a brother, Dennis Kester; and a sister, Naomi Sanders. Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Ducati motorcycle founder dies at 96
BOLOGNA, Italy (AP) -- Bruno Cavalieri Ducati, the last surviving founder of the motorcycle company that bears the family name, has died at the age of 96. The Ducati company said he died Monday at a residence for the elderly in the northern town of Ispra on Lake Maggiore. An architect, Cavalieri Ducati designed the factory where he and brothers Adriano and Marcello started their first venture -- the production of condensers and radio equipment -- in 1935. After Allied bombs destroyed the plant in World War II, they switched to motorcycles. The company enjoyed both commercial and sporting success in the 1950s and 1960s, but its fortunes dipped in the 1970s and 1980s.

Dr. Anne Anastasi, 'test guru' dies at 92
NEW YORK (AP) -- Dr. Anne Anastasi, whose influence has been felt by psychology students and standardized test takers for decades, died May 4. She was 92. Anastasi was known as the ''test guru,'' for her 1954 text, ''Psychological Testing.'' The tome is still required reading in undergraduate and graduate psychology courses and is considered a virtual bible for the field. The book is an encyclopedic review of how tests are constructed, validated and interpreted, and has received wide acclaim for its depth of analysis.

Fred Anthony Walter
Fred Anthony Walter, 67, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born April 17, 1934, in Manhattan, N.Y., son of the late Ferdinand and Margaret Schwartz Walter. He was Catholic. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and was appointed chief petty officer in 1969. He was the recipient of four Good Conduct Awards and managed the Interservice Softball League, winning the championship in 1969. He retired from the Navy in 1972 after 20 years of service. He had also been employed as a salesperson for Montgomery Ward, and had worked for the Census Bureau. He was a member and former manager of the Elks Lodge 411 for 26 years, serving as exalted ruler in 1977 and 1994. He rece ived the West Virginia State Elk of the Year Award in 1986, the Lawrence Pietro Award and a lifetime membership in 2000-01. He was chairman of the Elks Charity Golf Tournament for 15 years and was active with the Police Athletic League. He was also a lif etime member of VFW Post 548. He is survived by his wife, Becky Sisler Walter; three daughters and spouses, Valerie and Dana Burns, of Sissonville, Cheryl and Mark Wiles, of Morgantown, and Donna Sausen, of Morgantown; a stepson and spouse, Scott and Jennifer Cress, of Independence; a stepdaughter and spouse, Melanie and Michael Pompili, of Independence; seven grandchildren, Brian and Adam Burns, of Sissonville, Heather Meetze, of Jacksonville, Fla., Rebecca Meetze, and Ashley, Anthony and Aaron Sausen, all of Morgantown; three step grandchildren, Kaitlyn Pompili, Hailea and Elijah Cress, all of Independence; two sisters and spouses, Mary and John Mulcahy, and Dorothy and Vinnie Cyriacks, all of Margaite, Fla.; and a brother, Thomas Martin, of Margaite. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday. Service will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, with the Rev. Carl E. Bauer officiating. Burial will follow in Veterans National Cemetery in Pruntytown, with graveside military rites. The Elks Lodge 411 will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Phyllis DeProspero
Phyllis DeProspero, 81, of Morgantown, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at home. She was born April 3, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late James and Marie D'Ambrosio. She was a resident of Morgantown since 1947. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court Ursula 594, and a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Quinto DeProspero; a son and spouse, Michael and Marie Kline DeProspero, of Pinehurst, N.C.; two sisters and spouse, Lucy Ciaffone, of Brooklyn, and Marie and Michael Meloro, of Montvale, N.J. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Friends may call at Davidson-Mancinelli Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Friday, and from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday. A Christian Wake service will be at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, with the Rev. Carl E. Phyllis June Slate
Phyllis June Slate, 75, of Fairmont, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital, after a long illness. She was born June 9, 1925, in Tyler County, daughter of the late Russell and Edith Virginia Weekley Ash. She was a homemaker and a mother. She worked at Westinghouse and North American Philips for more than 40 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Trinity Assembly of God in Fairmont. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Sharon and Mike Swearingen, of Fairmont; a brother and spouse, Carl and Judith Ash, of Friendly; three grandchildren and spouses, Lana and Scott Kiser, of Fairmont, Gina and Scott White, of Fairmont, and Jack and Missy Franks, of South Carolina; five great-grandchildren, Jamie Merrill, Brandon Kiser, Paige Kiser, Alexis White and Colby Franks; and two nephews. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Slate, in 1990. Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 2-9 p.m. Friday. Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, with the Rev. Ray L. Crabtree officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
