Lyman P. "Smitty" Smith, 64, formerly of Morgantown, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.
He was born Jan. 22, 1937, in Birmingham, Ala., son of the late William and Jean Smith.
He was employed with the Department of Energy and retired from Monongalia General Hospital.
He is survived by a special friend, Lou Hodges, of Kingwood Pike; a son and spouse, William and Melinda Smith, of Moundsville; a stepson and spouse, Douglas "Jack" and Carol Bowyer, of Sacramento, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Alea and Anna Lee Smith, of Moundsville, and Douglas Bowyer Jr., of Sacramento.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lee Smith; a stepson, Ken Bowyer; and a stepmother, Nadine Smith.
His body will be cremated. There will be no viewing or service. Fred L. Jenkins is in charge of arrangements.
Edgar A. Shrout Jr.
Edgar A. Shrout Jr., 82, of Beaver, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Raleigh General Hospital.
He was born April 2, 1919, in Deer Creek, son of the late Edgar A. and Minnie Shrout.
He was an employee of GC Murphy Co. for more than 45 years, where he served as manager at various locations. He was a member of the St. Mary's United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Kiwanis, Rotary and Loyal Order of the Moose. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Harris Shrout; three daughters and two spouses, Judith Ann and Steve Walker, of Fairmont, Margaret and Steve O'Brien, of Beaver, and Cynthia Shrout, of South Point, Ohio; a brother, Turner Donald Shrout, of Marion, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Katherine and Kimberly Walker, and Deanna O'Brien.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Shrout; and two sisters, Marie and Elizabeth.
Friends may call at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, with Pastor Jim Reed officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
Docie Jones
Docie Hamilton Toothman Jones, 88, a lifelong resident of the Plum Run community, Mannington, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born March 29, 1913, on Plum Run, daughter of the late William H. and Ida Gault Hamilton.
She was a former employee of Fairmont General Hospital, where she was a switchboard operator. She was a member of the Plum Run Homemakers' Club, and she was an avid quiltmaker. She was a member of Plum Run Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Farmington High School.
She is survived by three sons and spouses, Dolan D. and Shirley Toothman and Dennis F. and Beverly Jones, all of Plum Run, and Douglas M. Jones, of Fairmont; a daughter and spouse, Donna L. and Alan Fluharty, of Plum Run; 10 grandchildren, Mistie Myers, Rod Toothman, Tina Fluharty Hoffman, Richard Fluharty, Crystal Fluharty Steen, Angie Frye, Jason Jones, Dustin Jones, Justin Jones and Savanah Jones.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Clovis Carrol Toothman; her second husband, Albert Ferman Jones; a daughter-in-law, Janet Matheny Jones; a brother and spouse, Lawrence Ray and Nettie Hamilton; and a nephew, Bill Hamilton.

Effie Henry
Effie Henry, of Melrose Street, Morgantown, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at home.
She was born in Kanawha County, daughter of the late John and Rebecca Rash Ball.
She was a member of Westover United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Fairview High School. During World War II, she was employed with Westinghouse in Fairmont and retired from West Virginia University in 1987 after 20 years of service. She was a homemaker, enjoyed sewing and was an avid traveler.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ronald Henry; a son and spouse, Mark and Wendy Henry, of Tampa, Fla.; four daughters and spouses, Cynthia and Peter Kudren, of Woodstock, N.Y., Linda and Peter Van Ooyen, of Star City, Betty and Tom Raeder, of Chesapeake, Va., and Rhonda and John Lewis, of Suncrest; two sisters, Irene Burdette, of Indianapolis, and Ruth Thornton, of Nashville, Tenn.; five brothers, Frank Ball, of Columbus, Ohio, the Rev. James Ball, of Kokomo, Ind., Lester Ball, of Morgantown, Woodrow Ball, of Fairmont, and Gene Ball, of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Clutter and Ruby Stickler.

Marquetta Sue Raber
Marquetta Sue Raber, 64, of Flaggy Meadow community, Mannington, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at home.
She was born Nov. 27, 1936, in Connellsville, Pa., daughter of the late Melvin and Ruby Cross Shrader.
She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy of Metz. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 5779 and the Women of the Moose Lodge 1344. She graduated from Mannington High School in 1955. She worked at Westinghouse in Fairmont for 19 years.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jack Raber; a daughter and spouse, Melinda and Ed Daniels, of Farmington; a son and spouse, Todd and Veronica Raber, of Fairmont; two grandsons, Heath Earl Raber and Eric Hunter Daniels, both of Farmington; and two sisters.

Annie 'Ann' Bolyard
Annie "Ann" Bolyard, 82, of Dellslow, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Masontown, daughter of the late Consteatine and Mary DeNoble Domico.
She had lived most of her life in Masontown.
She is survived by five daughters, Barbara Ellison, with whom she made her home in Dellslow, Doris Harner, of Fort Myers, Fla., Charlotte Henkel, of Atlanta, Carol Ashworth, of Leesville, Va., and Anita Harvey, of Core; a sister, Jean McCardle, of Mount Storm; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by seven brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.

Robert F. Hall, 53, of Silver Hill community, New Martinsville, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at home.
He was born Jan. 2, 1948, at Havre de Grace, Md., son of the late Leonard C. and Anna Christine Roberts Hall.
He was a member of Boilermakers Local 193, Baltimore.
He is survived by his wife, Bonita D. Baker Hall; two sons and their spouses, Donald C. and Regina Hall, of Delta, Pa., and Robert J. and Michelle Hall, of Silver Hill community; four brothers; a sister and five grandchildren.

Don 'Paul' Strawser
Don "Paul" Strawser, 51, of Tunnelton, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
He was born July 19, 1949, in Grafton, son of the late Hubert B. and Cora G. "Jody" Wiles Strawser.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and worked as a security guard at L.T. Wood Co., Hazelton. He attended Faith Fellowship Assembly of God.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Judith E. Grimm Strawser; three daughters and spouses, Brenda and Ronald Thomas, Tammy Strawser, and Tonya and Jamie Maxwell, all of Tunnelton; a sister, Nola Kay Wiles Strawser Layman, of Virginia; and three grandchildren, Ronnie Thomas, Aaron Maxwell and Jessica Thomas.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roy D. "Jake" Strawser; and a sister, Sue L. Strawser Johns.

John Arley Willard Jr.
John Arley Willard Jr., 78, of Grafton Road, Morgantown, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 18, 1922, in Morgantown, son of the late John Arley Sr. and Agatha Allen Willard.
He was retired from the Seneca and Morgantown glass companies and the Monongalia County Board of Education. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Moose Lodge and the Clinton District Volunteer Fire Department. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Cathy and Wes Keefover, of Kingwood Pike, and Sheila and Bobby Murray, of Summers School Road; a son and spouse, John Wayne and Kathy Cale, of Waynesburg, Pa.; six grandchildren, Heather M. Dalton, Amber M. Murray, Bobbie Jo Murray, Christy Lynn Woods, Cynthia Dawn Pratt and Nathaniel Wayne Cale; a stepgranddaughter and spouse, Marsha and Sean Stiles; three great-grandchildren, Kayla M. Dalton, Austin Jordan Woods and Allisia Taylor Woods; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Ryan T. Dixon and Rachel A. Stiles; and a friend, Doris Fletcher, of Fairmont.

Paula Susan Lauffer Vasale, 46, of Charleston, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at home.
She was born in Jeanette, Pa., daughter of Audrey Croushore Lauffer and Paul Edwin Lauffer.
She was a clinical nurse, serving in the mother/baby unit of the Women and Children's Hospital at Charleston Area Medical Center. She was a graduate of the WVU School of Nursing. She was a former chairman of CAMC's Patient Education Committee and also served on the Education Council. She was education coordinator of CAMC's mother/baby unit. She was a member of the Charleston Christian Alliance Church, Kappa Delta Sorority, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honorary and the Charleston Chamber Music Society.
She is also survived by her husband, Thomas A. Vasale; a daughter, Petra Lauren Vasale, of Charleston; three sons, Pierce Andrew Vasale and Chase Alexander Vasale, both of Charleston, and Nathan Arpad Vasale, of Conway, S.C.; her in-laws, Arpad L. and Ethel G. Vasale, of Milton, Conn.; a sister, Lynne Lauffer Leu, of Greensburg, Pa.; a brother, Bruce Allen Lauffer, of Jeannette, Pa.; and eight nieces and nephews.

Dale Glenn Greathouse
Dale Glenn Greathouse, 87, of Bath, Ohio, formerly of Masontown, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his son's home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 9, 1914, in Masontown, son of the late William R. and Cora Virginia Rogers Greathouse.
He was a coal miner in West Virginia and worked at Fruehof Trailer in Avon Lake, Ohio, before retiring from Lorain Products 25 years ago. He attended Broadway Assembly, Lorain, Ohio, and was a member of the UMW. He enjoyed hunting and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret S. Jeffers Greathouse; two sons and spouses, Harold and Mary Greathouse, of Apopka, Fla., and Terry and Nancy Greathouse, of Bath; a daughter and spouse, Carolyn and Ron Brown, of Avon Lake; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Kermit Greathouse, of Kingwood, and Bernard Greathouse, of Morgantown.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Greathouse; three brothers and four sisters.
Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, at the Broadway Assembly, Lorain, Ohio, with the Rev. Mark Lance officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. Donations: Salvation Army.
James H. Feathers
James H. Feathers, 69, of Star City, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at home.
He was born Sept. 29, 1931, in Morgantown, son of Marie Clouser Maier, of Martinsburg, and the late Okey C. Feathers.
He was a retired employee of Sterling Faucet. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling and hunting.
He is also survived by a daughter, Theresa Feathers, of Star City; two sons and a spouse, James Feathers, of Star City, and Edward and Beth Feathers, of Morgantown; two sisters, Joanne Feathers, of Martinsburg, and Helen Taylor, of Morgantown; two grandsons, Marc Feathers and Chris Feathers, both of Morgantown; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Mary A. Vargo Feathers, who died Nov. 4, 1993.

Jane Minor Adams
Jane Minor Adams, 81, of Morgantown, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Waynesburg, Pa., daughter of the late Sylva and Lillian G. Minor.
She was a Waynesburg High School graduate in 1938 and graduated as a registered nurse from Washington Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. She worked as a nurse in city hospitals along the East and West coasts during World War II while her husband was a naval officer in the Pacific fleet. After the war, she was a nurse in St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. In 1958, she moved to Morgantown with her family, as her husband joined the faculty at the new West Virginia University dental school. She was a member of the Monongalia County Dental Auxiliary and a member of the American Red Cross. She volunteered at Monongalia General Hospital, West Virginia University Medical Center and the American Red Cross blood bank. In 1968, she returned to nursing at Vincent Pallotte Hospital in Morgantown for a few years. She was an active 43-year member of the First Baptist Church of Morgantown, was PTA president and a leader for the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her hobbies included gourmet cooking, entertaining, playing bridge, growing flowers, collecting and restoring antiques, and bass-fishing in Canada.
She is survived by a son and spouse, John and Jane Adams, of Mount Lebanon, Pa.; a daughter, Catherine A. Hamilton, of Morgantown; five grandchildren, David Adams, of Pittsburgh, Caitlin Adams, of Mount Lebanon, Ann Adams, of Morgantown, and Karen Hamilton and Brian Hamilton, both of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and a sister, Eleanor Minor Carnahan, of New Castle, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John D. Adams; an infant daughter, Susan Jane Adams; and a brother, William C. Minor.
A memorial service will be at the First Baptist Church of Morgantown at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, with the Rev. James M. Stinespring officiating. Sharon "Poppy" King Slinde, 59, of Bounds Circle, Westover, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.
She was born July 29, 1941, in Waynesburg, Pa., daughter of the late Paul I. and Jeanne Hickman King.
She retired from Monongalia County Schools as a bus driver. She was a member of the Point Pleasant American Legion Auxiliary and Women of the Moose of Waynesburg.
She is survived by her husband, Kerry Slinde; her stepfather, Paul M. King; two sons, Scott Gooden, of Waynesburg, and Paul Gooden, of Morgantown; two daughters, Shari Gooden, of Morgantown, and Lee Ann Lippincott, of Jefferson, Pa.; a brother, Richard E. She was the owner and operator of Hills Ceramics.
She is survived by a son, Gary Flick, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Dixie Cole, of Elkton, Md.; two brothers, Harry Rodeheaver, of Clarksburg, and Willard Rodeheaver, of Kingwood; two granddaughters, Lisa Danielle Griffin, and Andrea Cole; and two great-grandchildren, Madeline Griffin, and Sean Griffin.

David Franklin Walden, 55, of Seneca Street, Westover, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at home.
He was born April 24, 1946, in Morgantown, son of Jeanette Swiderski Walden, of Laurel Point, and the late Earl Millard Walden.
He was an electrician, retired from WVU after 35 years of service. He was Methodist and a member of Local Union 814.
He is survived by a daughter and spouse, Schelli and Walter Clawges Jr., of Morgantown; a brother and spouse, Charles Earl and Priscilla Walden, of Granville; and two grandchildren, Samantha and Jeremy Clawges, both of Morgantown.

She was born May 27, 1928, daughter of the late James A. and Olive Spacht Shipp Sr.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed looking after her grandchildren, her Beanie Baby collection and playing Bingo.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John W. Moon Sr., whom she married on Feb. 28, 1947; a son, John W. Moon Jr., of Masontown; four daughters, Rose Sroka, of Scenery Hill, Pa., Sue Fowler, of Waynesburg, Pa., Candy Lapping, of Waynesburg, Pa. and Tammy Yoney, of Mount Morris, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, James A. Shipp Jr., of Smithfield, Pa.; and two sisters, Emily Hegedis, of Lake Lynn, Pa., and Alberta Bodkins, of Butler, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters in infancy; and a sister, Thelma Shipp.
Friends may call at Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, Pa., from 4-6 p.m. Friday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday. Service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 24, with the Rev. Greg Wilgus officiating. Burial will be in Fletcher Cemetery, Cheat Neck.
Ralph Katarsky
Ralph Katarsky, 72, of Carmichaels, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Mount Macrina Manor, Uniontown, Pa., after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 14, 1929, in Gates, Fayette County, Pa., son of the late Joseph Kotarsky and Maria Valent Mutmansky Kotarsky
He established Ralph's Garage Doors in Carmichaels in 1976 and assisted his son, Brett, in taking over the business in 1996. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was active with Carmichaels youth athletics for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Smith Katarsky, whom he married June 29, 1970; a son, Brett Katarsky, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Lynette) O'Donnell, of Euclid, Ohio, and Mrs. Michael (Lorene) Spino, of Mentor, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Michelle O'Donnell, Melissa O'Donnell, Megan O'Donnell, Melanie O'Donnell, Joey O'Donnell, Kaylee Spino and Halley Spino; two brothers, John McNasky, of Washington, Pa., and Pete Mutmansky, of Butler, Pa.; and two sisters, Mrs. Cecelia Torrey, of Thompson, Pa., and Mrs. Caroline Safko, of West Mifflin, Pa.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Martin Kotarsky, Thomas Kotarsky and Joseph Kotarsky; and four sisters, Agnes Zatlokovicz, Mary Tozzo, Ann O'Dell and Catherine Bryan.
Friends may call at Yoskovich Funeral Home, 300 Vine St., Carmichaels, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Sunday, and until 10:30 a.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park, with full military honors accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400.
Mildred S. Coombs
Mildred S. Coombs, formerly of Morgantown, died Monday, June 19, 2001, at the West Chester Nursing and Rehab in West Chester, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 16, 1915, in Clarksburg, daughter of the late Edna and Frank Southern.
She is survived by a twin sister, Martha Johnson, of Clarksburg; two daughters, Rebecca A. Bell, of Cincinnati, and Carolyn K. Seager, of Downingtown, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, L. Davis Coombs; and a son, L. Davis Coombs Jr.
Service will be in Cincinnati.
