James McElfresh Sr.
James Ray McElfresh Sr., 45, of Colfax community, Fairmont, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Aug. 16, 1955, in Fairmont, son of Herbert Ray and Opal Madeline Williams McElfresh, of Fairmont. He was a laborer at Top Brand Co., in Fairmont. He had also worked at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Fairmont General Hospital and Kennedy and Sons. He was a former member of the Eagles Club. He was an outdoors enthusiast who also enjoyed spending time with his grandson. He is also survived by a son, James R. McElfresh Jr., of Fairmont; a daughter, Tonya Jo McElfresh, of Fairmont; a brother and spouse, Herbert Ray and Lynn McElfresh, of Fairmont; two sisters and a spouse, Rose Ella McElfresh, of Fairmont, and Martha Diane and Tom Duncil, of Fairmont; a grandson, Anthony Ray McElfresh, of Fairmont; and his fiancee, Bessie Hilling, of Colfax. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Dorothea Long. Mildred Imes
Mildred Josephine Imes, 88, of Fairmont, formerly of Fairview, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 24, 1912, in Ronco, Pa., daughter of the late Joseph A. and Alwilda Fields Joy. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, game shows and travel, especially to New Jersey, the site of many vacations. She is survived by four daughters and a spouse, Mary Jo Bennett, Evelyn Imes and Ruth and Nick Carovillano, all of Fairmont, and Diane Williams, of Grenloch, N.J.; a nephew, Joseph Vasil, of Osage; six grandchildren, James Bennett, Debra Bennett, Anthony Carovillano, David Carovillano, Mark White and Sheila Evans; and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond "Guy" Imes, in Feb. 1972; a brother, Carl "Hawkshaw" Joy; and a sister, Julia Vasil. Jack Dempsey
Jack Dempsey, 75, of Fairmont, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at home. He was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Oklahoma, son of the late Ralph E. and Mary Tennant Dempsey. He was the owner of Claytex Coal Co. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 17 and was a past commander of VFW Post 629, both in Fairmont. He is survived by his wife, Betty Vandetta Dempsey; a son and spouse, Robert "Jack" and Susan Dempsey, of Fairmont; a sister and spouse, Deloris and Don Henderson, of Levels Road, Fairmont; and a granddaughter, Jaycee Dempsey. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Allieze Wilson. Friends may call at Domico Funeral Home, Fairmont, from 1-9 p.m. Monday. Nick Quintana
Nick Quintana, 76, of Masontown, Pa., died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown. He was born Dec. 16, 1924, at Scottsdale, son of the late Flores and Benita Garrido Quintana. He grew up in Nemacolin, Pa., and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a 53-year resident of Masontown and retired from the Nemacolin Mine in 1983, with 40 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 423 of Masontown, and VFW Post 4584, also of Masontown. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Myrna Battaglina Quintana, whom he married Nov. 26, 1947; a son and spouse, Duane and Susan Quintana, of Woodland Hills, Calif.; a grandson and spouse, Andrew and Kala Quintana; three sisters, Frances Inez Zaubi and Cecelia Gregorich, both of Nemacolin, and Carmen Kerr, of Carmichaels, Pa.; and a sister-in-law, Delores Alexander, of Masontown. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Quintana; and two sisters, his twin, Mary Ustupski, and Virginia Zaubi. Friends may call at Martin J. Yoskovich Funeral Home, 300 S. Wilda O. Bennett
Wilda O. Bennett, 80, of Sabraton Avenue, Morgantown, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, with the Rev. David R. Tomer officiating. Graveside services will be at the Indian Camp Cemetery in Buckhannon at noon, Tuesday, July 3. Higgins Donham
Higgins Donham, 98, of Plymouth, Ind., and formerly of Monongahela Ave., Westover, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Plymouth Hospital. He was born Jan. 4, 1903, at Sigsbee, Pa., son of the late Robert E. and Mary Elzabeth Merryman Donham. He was a co-founder and charter member Riverside Apostolic Church in Morgantown, and also attended Hope Evangelism and New Christian Life Fellowship churches in Indiana. He loaded coal for Hess Coal Co. from 1918-24 and worked at the Monongahela Railroad from 1924-34. In 1934, he took a job as a coal miner with Rosedale Coal Co., where he retired in 1957. Following his retirement from the mines he worked 10 years at West Virginia University from 1958-68. He was a member of United Mine Workers Local 5429. He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Dorothy and Paul Williams, of Oseola, Ind., and Martha and Victor Singleton, of Plymouth; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three nieces; five nephews; a sister-in-law, Ruby Donham, of Westover; and a brother-in-law, David Frazier, of Westover. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Pauline Jane Donham, on June 5, 1990; and two brothers, John Warren Donham, in July 1942, and Ralph Emerson Donham, in Oct. 1996. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, with the Revs. M.A. Donham and David Hudson officiating. Hastings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Patty Jane Buchanan
Patty Jane Buchanan, 71, of Morgantown, formerly of Point Marion, Pa., died Friday, June 29, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center, in Morgantown. She was a MonPointe resident for the past five years. She was born Jan. 20, 1930, in Dunbar, Pa., daughter of the late Dan Beatty and Emma Smitley Dennis. She is survived by a daughter, Patty Ann Buchanan; and two brothers and spouses, Ralph and Elena Dennis, of Morgantown, and Gerald and Patty Dennis, of Bayard. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Beatty and John Beatty. Friends may call at Richard R. Mildred R. Junkins
Mildred R. Junkins, 61, of Bruceton Mills, formerly of Antioch, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at home. She was born Nov. 23, 1939, in Youngstown, Ohio, daughter of June Rohrbaugh, of Antioch, and the late Raymond S. Bosly. She was a lifelong member of the Knobley Church of the Brethren in Martin. She is also survived by her husband of 36 years, the Rev. Carroll Junkins, of Sandy Creek congregation of the Church of the Brethren; a son and spouse, Glenn C. and Becky Junkins, of Petersburg; two daughters, Sharon Jordan, of New Creek, and Theresa Junkins, of Burlington; and five grandchildren. June W. Lee
June W. Lee, 79, of Fairmont, formerly of Morgantown, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at home. She was born June 24, 1922, in Monongalia County, daughter of the late Brooks and Lessie Snider Wisman. She was a homemaker and attended the Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont. She is survived by her husband, Richard W. Lee; two daughters, Margaret M. Werkheiser, of Eudora, Kan., and Linden Turnquist, of Aurora, Colo.; a son, Richard Randall Lee, of Cool Ridge; a brother, Byron S. Wisman, of Morgantown; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Katharine Ellison; and a grandson. Mary Jean Bacan Ellis
Mary Jean Bacan Ellis, 80, of Antioch, Tenn., died Friday, June 29, 2001, at home. She was born April 7, 1921, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Stephan Bacan and Barbara Sustaric Bacan Butcher. She graduated from Point Marion High School, East Liverpool Business College in East Liverpool, Ohio, and the Cleveland Beauty Academy. She is survived by two daughters, Joy Ellis, of Antioch, and Reuel Matana, of Nashville, Tenn.; a grandson, Fred Geraghty, of Long Beach, Calif.; a brother, John Butcher; and three sisters, Ellen Butcher Marinsek and Katherine Butcher Wyda, both of Point Marion, Pa., and Margaret Butcher McMorrow, of Orrville, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by a brother, George Bacan, of Clairton, Pa.; a sister, Ann Bacan Herron; and a stepfather, Marko Butcher. Service will be Monday, July 2, at the Louis E. Robert Gordon Harvey
Robert Gordon Harvey, 76, of Sun City, Fla., died Saturday, June 30, 2001. He was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., son of the late Dayton Mylo Harvey and Dolores Elizabeth Romzick Harvey. He was a retired service engineer from General Motors, Oldsmobile Division. He was a member of the Sun City Center United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of VFW Post 548 and the Marine Corps League 342 of Morgantown. He was a member of the Laurel of Acacia-Eastgate Lodge 477 AF&AM in Detroit, the Scottish Rite in Tampa, Fla., the Commandery 018 Knight Templer in Morgantown, the Osiris Shrine Temple in Wheeling, Egypt Temple in Tampa, the Mountaineer Patrol and Morgantown Shrine Club, the Legion of Honor of Osiris Temple and the Sun City Center Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis A. Koffroth Harvey; two stepsons and spouses, Robert B. and Tammy Davies, of San Antonio, Texas, and Willmont M. and Vickie Davies, of Lakeland, Fla.; two stepdaughters and spouses, Willis L. and Richard Anderson, of Morgantown, and Willadette M. and Frank DeGrazia, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Earl L. John Henry Hendrickson
John Henry Hendrickson, 85, of Beech Street, Grafton, died July 1, 2001, at home. He was born July 1, 1916, in Grafton, son of the late John Albert Hendrickson and Scharlotte Smith Hendrickson. He was an engineer in the city and county of Los Angeles. He served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate. He was Baptist. He is survived by two sons and a spouse, John T. and Barbara Hendrickson, of Grafton, and George Richard Hendrickson, of Florida; three daughters and a spouse, Beverly Pringle and Susan, both of Colorado, and Donna Jean and Harold Summers, of Rock Hill, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, George Hendrickson, of California; and three sisters, Jean Berda and Dorothy Fidelman, both of Washington, Pa., and Janice Phillips, of Grafton, Ohio. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Erma Jean Phillips and Loula Geraldine Harding. Mildred Fragale
Mildred Fragale, 82, died Saturday, June 30, 2001. She was born Oct. 9, 1918, daughter of the late Martin and Louise Blagaich, of Mount Claire. She was a teacher and principal at Linden Elementary School for 30 years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Clarksburg Woman's Club, Catholic Daughters of America, Retired Teachers and Principals Association of Harrison County and the Democratic Woman's Club of Harrison County. She was a past grand regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, Clarksburg chapter. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She is survived by two daughters, Clara Scully, of Lexington, Ky., and Nancy Gwilliam, of Morgantown; a son, Ron Fragale, of Clarksburg; six grandchildren, James Scully, Karen Scully and Lisa Stein, all of Lexington, Tim Gwilliam and Melody Gwilliam, both of Morgantown, and Veronica Fragale, of Clarksburg; and a sister, Mary Zivkovich, of Lost Creek. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bernard "Pete" Fragale, in 1988. Service will be at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Clarksburg, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 3. Irene Gibson Roth
Irene Pauline Ciumedean Gibson Roth, 73, of El Paso, Ark., died Tuesday, June 26, 2001. She is survived by three sons, Nelson Michael Ciumedean, of Fairmont, Jerry Lee Gibson, of Florida, and Paul Curtis Gibson, of California; a daughter, Margie Maxine Magdziarz, of El Paso; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. At her request, her body is being cremated, and a memorial service will be at Beverly Hills Memorial Park in Westover at 10 a.m. Friday, July 13. Cremation Association of Arkansas is in charge of arrangements.

James F. Stemple
James F. Stemple, 82, of Philippi, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, in Monongalia General Hospital. He was born July 13, 1918, in Barbour County, son of the late Troy Dow and Emma Catherine Poling Stemple. He was a former mayor of Philippi and former Barbour County commissioner. He was a graduate of Philippi High School. He was an insurance adjuster, having retired from State Automobile Mutual Insurance Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy. He was a member of Bigelow Lodge 52 AF&AM and a past member of Barbour County Airport Authority. He was a private pilot and a member of the Barbour Country Club, Philippi Unit ed Methodist Church and the church choir. He was a former church superintendent and church trustee. He is survived by a daughter and spouse, Sue and Charles Michael Criss, of Cincinnati; a sister and spouse, Hilda and Morgan Lyons, of Philippi; a brother, Dr. Larry Jack Stemple, of Morgantown; and three grandsons, Matthew B. Criss and Benjamin A. Criss, both of Cincinnati, and Andrew M. Criss, of Austin, Texas. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Agnes Mae "Tip" Alderman Stemple, on Nov. 30, 1996; and three brothers, Albert Vance Stemple, Douglas Q. Stemple and Philip "Ned" Stemple. Lyda Waggy Kinsley
Lyda Waggy Kinsley, 98, formerly of Grapevine Hill, Morgantown, died Monday, July 2, 2001, in Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Aug. 21, 1902, in Tanner, daughter of the late John Fred Waggy and Vietta Yoke Waggy Scalin. She attended the Salvation Army and was a member of Home League of Salvation Army. She organized the first union of the American Flint Glass Workers of Michigan. She was voted the first president of three glass factories in Morgantown: Star Glass, Polish Glass and Caufield Glass Factory. She also worked for Frank H. Wilkins in the retail business in Jimtown and was active with In Touch and Concerned until 1993. She is survived by a son, Bruce Kinsley, of Hudson, Fla.; a daughter and spouse, Roberta and Clarence Shafer, of Laurel Point; eight grandchildren and spouses, Dixie and Kenny Sisler, Joyce and Ron Boggess, John H. and Judy Shafer, Marvin W. and Merlene Shafer, Clarence Bradley and Belinda Shafer, Michael Kinsley, Douglas Kinsley and Paul Kinsley; six stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel A. Kinsley, in October 1983; three sisters, Delphia Waggy, Sophia Waggy and Mae McGee; and three brothers, Creed Waggy, Edward Waggy, and Lloyd Waggy. Eva Mrytle Haddix
Eva Mrytle Brown Haddix, 73, of Grafton, Paradise Cove Community, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at home after a long illness. She was born July 24, 1927, in Grafton, daughter of the late Algie and Mrytle E. Danser Brown. She was retired from teaching elementary school in Taylor County. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers' Association and attended the New Testament Church of Grafton. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James E. Haddix; two children and spouses, Daniel L. and Joy E. Haddix, and Patricia E. and Francis W. Hess, all of Grafton; five grandchildren, all of Grafton; three great-grandchildren, all of Grafton; and a sister, Lucille Blizzard, of Baltimore. She was also preceded in death by two sons, J. David Haddix, and Michael J. Haddix; and three brothers, Russell Brown, Milford Brown and Wilford Brown. Friends may call at Donald G. Theresa Nicknadarvich
Theresa E. Nicknadarvich, 82, of Frederick, Md., died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Citizen's Nursing Home, Frederick. She was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ambrose DeMao. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. She also was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and enjoyed ceramics and bowling. She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Bruno Nicknadarvich Sr.; a son and spouse, Bruno and Pam Nicknadarvich Jr.; and four grandchildren, Bruno Nicknadarvich III, Steven Wise, Ian Manicom and Sarah Manicom. William Robert Stresky
William Robert Stresky, 57, of Terra Alta, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born Nov. 20, 1943, in New Kensington, Pa., son of the Helen E. Morgan Stresky, of Terra Alta, and the late William C. Stresky. He moved to Preston County in 1971, where he began his teaching career. He was principal for three years, and then a teacher, coach, and athletic director at Terra Alta High School. He took the girls' basketball team to the state tournaments in 1982 and 1983. He also was the boys JV basketball coach. He also was a youth league coach. In 1991, he went to Preston High School, where he taught German. He was the faculty adviser of the German Club at both Preston High School and Terra Alta High School. He was the chairman of the foreign language department at Preston High School. He was the founding member and first president of the Preston County School Employees Federal Credit Union. He taught night classes at Fairmont State College. He retired in 1997 from the Preston County School system. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Terra Alta, and had recently been attending Little Sandy Church of the Nazarene, Bruceton Mills. He was a past member of the Terra Alta Volunteer Fire Department. In the past several years, he had bee* a volunteer cameraman at WNPB, Morgantown, and a VIVA volunteer at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md. He is also survived by three daughters, Emily Dawn Stresky, of Buckhannon, Alicia Marie Stresky, of Terra Alta, and Sara Renee Stresky, of Simi Valley, Calif. Friends may call at Arthur H. Carolyn McMillen Rogers, 54, of Pasadena, Md., formerly of Morgantown, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Pasedena. She was born May 21, 1947, in Morgantown, daughter of Frances Hyde McMillen Johnson, of Bruceton Mills, and the late Clark Donald McMillen. She is also survived by her husband, Michael Rogers, of Pasadena; three daughters and spouses, Michelle and Bill Maloney, Noreen and Brad Fleming, and Jody Casteel and fiance Mark Biedron, all of Morgantown; a son and fiancee, Joe Casteel and Kelly Lauer, of Brooklyn, Md.; a sister and fiance, Tammy Ponceroff and Randy Blosser, of Mogantown; a brother and spouse, Sonny and Ruth McMillen, of Morgantown; seven nieces and nephews, all of Morgantown; and seven grandchildren, Krystal, Jimmy, Elizabeth, Christopher, Samantha, Casey, and McKenzie, all of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Marshall "Perry" McMillen. Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 9, with Rev. David Spence officiating. Burial will be in Nicholson Chapel Cemetery.

Jacqueline Deonise
Word has been received of the death of Jacqueline "Lucy" Deonise, 88, on May 29, 2001. She was born in Ascoll Piciano, Italy, and came to the United States in 1912. She lived in the Seneca area of Morgantown for more than 30 years. She worked and retired from Zeller's Glass Co., moved to Wisconsin and then to Wilmington, Calif. She is survived by a son, Ronald Deonise, of Arizona, a daughter, Dolores Deonise Rice, of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.; five grandchildren, Richard Deonise, of Florida, Beverly Deonise, of Long Beach, Calif., Tina Deonise Maloof, of Long Beach, Stephanie Rice, of Long Beach, and Christopher Rice, of Hawaiian Gardens; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Nicholas Bernard and Albert Anthony. At her request, her ashes were spread over the Pacific Ocean near San Pedro, Calif. Donations: American Diabetes or the American Heart Association. A private memorial service was held for the family.

Elmer Phillip Nicholson
Elmer Phillip Nicholson, 77, of Bull Run (near Masontown), died July 4, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital of complications from cancer and pneumonia. He was born May 5, 1924, in Monongalia County, son of the late Thornton "Nig" and Blanche Smith Nicholson. He graduated from Masontown High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He retired from the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Morgantown. He also worked at Sterling Faucet, co-owned and managed the Moonlite Roller Rink in Masontown and managed the Preston County Landfill. He loved the outdoors and hunted deer, turkey, squirrel, and ginseng. He was a member of the Parkersburg Coin Club, and was Methodist. He was treasurer of the Mount Zion Cemetery Association for more than 15 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Jenkins Nicholson; four children and spouses, Phyllis Ann Hamrick, of Masontown, Phil and Kathy Moran Nicholson, of Parkersburg, Linda DuPont, of Arthurdale, and Ron Nicholson, of Westover; grandchildren and spouses, Victoria Hamrick and Eric Varner, of Parkersburg, Tom Hamrick, of Masontown, Derek and Drew DuPont, of Arthurdale; a great-granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Varner, of Parkersburg; brothers and sisters, Lucille Atkinson, Rosie Paynter, Verdie Simmons, Jean Sweeden, Thelma Gaus, Dave, Gilbert, Kenneth, Henry and Curtis Nicholson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Lloyd and Bunner Nicholson. At his request, there will be no funeral home visitation or viewing. Friends and family will gather at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at Nazarene Fellowship Hall in Masontown. Food will be provided. Donations to charity of choice. Cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home.
