Donald L. Marks, 73, of Barrett Street, Grafton, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Hopemont Hospital, Terra Alta.
He was born March 3, 1928, in Flemington, son of the late John Franklin Marks and Iona Dell Knabenshue Marks.
He was U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a retired millwright and member of Millwright's Local No. 1755, of Parkersburg. He was Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Thompson Marks; three children, Donald Marks, Franklin Marks and Loretta Turnbull, all of Florida; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and eight siblings, Mary Della Marchman, of Elkins, Kayrell Wilkerson and Loretta Bartkowiak, both of Ocean City, Md., Franklin D. Marks, of Florida, Lera Novak, of Newark, Del., and John A. Marks, Joseph Marks, and David Marks, all of Grafton.

Eugene Hawkins
Eugene W. Hawkins, 74, of Warren, Ohio, and formerly Rowlesburg, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Forum Trumbull Memorial Hospital, in Warren.
He was born June 5, 1927, in Weston, son of the late Arley and Mildred Hawkins.
He retired in 1993 from R.M.I. Titanium Corp., in Warren, after 25 years of service in the plant's grinding department. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He enjoyed playing cards, farming and picnics with his family. He moved to Warre* in 1968 from West Virginia. He was a former member of the Rowlesburg Lions Club.
He is survived by a son, Rodney L. Hawkins, of Liberty Township, Ohio; a daughter, Betty Jean Hawkins, of Howland Township, Ohio; three sisters, Marie Summers, of Parma, Ohio, Mabel Lochovich, of Northfield, Ohio, and Laura Sledz, of Brecksville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Marie Weaver Hawkins, on Dec. 14, 1997; a daughter, Janice Pokines; a granddaughter, Holly Renee Hawkins; a brother, Jerry Hawkins; and a sister, Lena Hawkins.

Gertrude B. Shaffer
Gertrude B. Shaffer, 86, of Kingwood, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Heartland of Preston County, Kingwood.
She was born April 24, 1915, daughter of the late Luther and Martha Jane Greathouse Taylor.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dallas Shaffer; a son and spouse, Herbert and Cathy Shaffer, of Masontown; three daughters and spouses, Margaret and Jake Cress, of Masontown, Lillian and Fred Jenkins, of Masontown, and Doris and James Hovatter, of Arthurdale; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters; two grandsons; and a granddaughter-in-law.

Albert C. Dayton
Albert C. Dayton, 79, of Grafton Road, Morgantown, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at home.
He was born July 5, 1922, in Youngwood, Pa., son of the late Sidney Q. and Pearl King Dayton.
He retired from the Humphrey No. 7 Mine, last working maintenance at the preparation plant. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Second Armor Division and was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Fraze Dayton; a daughter and spouse, LouAnn and Bryan Selbe, of Hurricane; a brother, Elmer Cathon Dayton, of Pentress; two sisters and a spouse, Thelma and Junior Rakosi, of Granville, and Glendora Donaldson, of Baltimore; and a grandchild, Andrew Dayton Selbe, of Hurricane.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bernidean Hurst and Dorthey Dayton.

Gertrude C. Parker, 89, of Fairmont, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born June 17, 1912, in Wheeling, daughter of the late Dr. John J. and Susan Riester Carroll.
She was a dental assistant for Dr. Frank Carroll. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a former member of St. Anthony and St. Peter, the Fisherman Catholic churches. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters for 50 years, and St. Rose of Lima Guild of St. Peters.
She is survived by six children and spouses, Paul J. and Dianne Chadwell Parker, David and Helen Parker Moran, and David and Mary Lou Vincent Parker, all of Fairmont, John and Kathleen Ottney Parker, of Buckhannon, Charles and Blenda Knobel Parker, of Monongah, and Suzanne Parker Wright, of Wheeling; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dr. Frank, John and the Rev. Charles Carroll; and three sisters, Mary Margaret Parker, Claire Agnes and Theophane.

Betty Hall Rinker
Betty Hall Rinker, 80, co-owner of Ike's Tire Service, in Grafton, and a resident of Florence Street, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born May 15, 1921, in Cumberland, Md., daughter of the late Wilbur C. Hall and Mattie K. Matheny Hall.
She was a retired ticket clerk at the B&O Railroad Co., Grafton, with more than 15 years of service. She was a member of the St. Mathias Episcopal Church of Grafton, and also a member of the Heritage Garden Club, of Grafton.
She is survived by a son and spouse, Clipper and Cindy Rinker, of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Bettina Rinker, at home; two grandchildren, Melissa Spoon, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Jaison Rinker, of Pittsburgh.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, James V. "Ike" Rinker, on Jan. 27, 2000; and a son, Jim Rinker.

Nancy Gail McGinnis
Nancy Gail McGinnis, 51, of Idamay, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at home.
She was born Jan. 14, 1950, in Fairmont, daughter of Gay A. and Mary R. Vincent Reeves of Winfield community, Fairmont.
She was a homemaker and mother. She was an accounting clerk for Consolidation Coal Co.'s regional office in Morgantown for 16 years before becoming ill. She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1967. She was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, antiques and attending craft shows.
She is also survived by her husband of 33 years, H. Rodney McGinnis, whom she married Nov. 15, 1968; a daughter and spouse, Molly and Michael Holt, of Fairmont; a brother and spouse, Jonathan F. and Alice Reeves, of Fairmont; a sister and spouse, Ruth An* and Gary Long, of Morristown, Tenn.,; and a godchild, Brittany McDonald.
She was preceded in death by Guy and Emma Reeves and Lafe and Ruth Vincent and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Coleone Friend McGinnis.

Gladys Juanita Villers, 79, of Mannington, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at home.
She was born Sept. 3, 1921, in Wyatt, daughter of the late Golden Basil and Mary Mae Talkington Eddy.
She enjoyed embroidery. She was a homemaker and formerly attended the Assembly of God.
She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Audrey and Donald Carpenter, of Mannington; three grandchildren and spouse, Julie and William Leasure, Martha Villers and Brandon Lee Carpenter; three stepgrandsons ans spouse, Donald and Staci Carpenter, James Edward Carpenter and Lucas Carpenter; a stepgranddaughter, Karen Carpenter; two sisters, Maggie Jones, of Mannington, and Leatha Sharpe, of Shinnston; a brother, Wilbert Eddy, of Wyatt; and several nieces and nephews including William Villers, who was raised in the Viller home.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer Villers; two sons, Homer Golden Villers and James Ross Villers; and three brothers, Clarence, Ray and Max Eddy.

Harold Ray Kittle
Harold Ray "Jack" Kittle, 72, formerly of Belington, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Talbott's Personal Care Home in Belington, where he had lived for a year.
He was born March 11, 1929, in Norton, son of the late William Golf and Buela Shrader Kittle.
He worked as a contract electrician for the local IBEW 425 of Fairmont, retiring in 1992 with 37 years of service. He was Protestant and a life member of the Belington VFW Post 410. He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1947. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
He is survived by his second wife, Carmen M. Daniels Kittle, of Elkins; three daughters and spouses, Sharon and Bill Cross, Lois and Rob Phares, and Debbie White, all of Belington; two stepdaughters, Jeana White, of Belington, and Annie Graham, of Elkins; three stepsons, Nikki, Joe and Dave Golf, all of Belington; a sister, Betty Thorn, of Granville; four grandchildren, Shawn and Shanna White, Justin Phares and Aaron Cross; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Kelsi; five stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Phyllis Roy, of Westover.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lily Ramsey; a sister, Virginia Rowen; and three brothers, Gene, Paul and Bill Kittle.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Runner Chapel, with Pastor Steve White officiating. Visitation was Monday. Burial will be in Fraternal Cemetery, Belington. Military rites will be conducted by the Belington VFW Post 410.
Helen E. Higginbotham
Helen Elizabeth Higginbotham, 79, of New Cumberland, formerly of Mannington, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in Wheeling.
She was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Hoodsville, daughter of the late Fred and Blanche Moore.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by four daughters and spouses, Linda Hoffman, of Morgantown, Kathleen Brackett, of Iowa, Rhonda and Jack Sandy, of New Cumberland, and Anna and Terry Raines, of New Cumberland; three sisters and spouses, June and Lester Higginbotham, of Mannington, Rosedell and Roy Hayes, of Massilion, Ohio, and Betty and Ray Ammons, of Weston; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Clem Higginbotham, who died January 1994; a sister, Mildred Herron; and a brother, Wilbur Moore.

Edward Charles Kisner
Edward Charles "Charlie" Kisner, 49, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 4, 1952, in Kingwood, son of the late Perry and Anna Guminey Kisner.
He was formerly employed with Savastian Construction Co.
He is survived by three sisters and a spouse, Martha Nicholson, of Bruceton Mills, Leona and Jess Mayle, of Morgantown, and Virginia Forman, of Morgantown; three brothers and spouses, Virgil and Diane Kisner, of Brave, Pa., Frank and Peggy Kisner, of Cassville, and Harry and Mary Kisner, of Pursglove.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, JoAnn McGilton and Georgie Rose Kisner; and five brothers, James Kisner, Frankie Kisner, Johnny Kisner, William Kisner and Fildia Kisner.

Gary Mark Tayman
Word has been received of the death of Gary Mark Tayman, 56, of Crestview, Fla., formerly of Manheim, Preston County, on July 24, 2001.
He was born Aug. 11, 1944, in Manheim, son of the late Harvey and Marguerite Parker Tayman.
He was a graduate of Rowlesburg High School. He retired from the U.S. Air Force on July 31, 1982, as a master sergeant, after 20 years of service. During his career, he served two tours in Vietnam and received numerous military decorations. He was employed as a civil engineer at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Tayman, of Crestview; three children and spouses, Dawn and Kevin Schotz, of Sheppard Air Force Base, Fla.; Dane and Karri Herndon, of Dothan, Ala.; and Melanie and Todd Littreal, of Crestview; four brothers, John Tayman, of Eureka, Calif., Tom Tayman, of Rowlesburg, and Joe Tayman and Roger Tayman, of Kingwood; four sisters, Carole Funk, of Rowlesburg, Myrna Jewell, of Charlotte, N.C., Marcia Shillingburg, of Morgantown, and Nancy Tayman, of Akron, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.
Service was Friday, July 27, at Hurlburt Field Chapel, Florida, with burial in Old Bethel Cemetery, Crestview, with military honors.

Marie Traub Reich
Marie Traub Reich, 82, of Mentor, Ohio, formerly of Cleveland, Willoughby, Ohio, and Whitehorse, Alaska, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Lake Hospital Systems, in Willoughby.
She was born March 13, 1919, in Cleveland.
She was an accountant. She retired form Eaton Corp., where she worked for 20 years. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of VFW Post 1500, Willoughby. She was an avid pinochle player, and drove her own car up until two weeks ago in Western Lake County. She was also a 1937 graduate of Villa Angela Academy.
She is survived by a son, Howard Traub Jr., of Mentor; two daughters and a spouse, Janice and Dave Schlienz, of Vallejo, Calif., and Diane Hooie, of Morgantown; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Howard Traub Sr., and Henry E. Reich; and a sister, Joanne Andrews.
Private graveside service will be held at a later date. Brunner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Mentor, is in charge of arrangements.
Franklin D. Shaffer
Franklin D. Shaffer, 68, of Thomas, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home after a battle with cancer.
He was born March 16, 1933, in Thomas, son of the late Charles Harrison Shaffer Sr. and Vernie Catherine Elborn Shaffer.
He was a 1950 graduate of Thomas High School and also a graduate of Fairmont State College, class of 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years in the 1950s. He worked for the West Virginia Division of Corrections, Tucker County Board of Education, and Garret County Maryland Board of Education. He retired from Huttonsville Correctional Center, where he worked in diagnostics and classification. He served on the Mountain Top Senior Citizens Board of Directors and also the Thomas Volunteer Fire Department. He was Methodist.

Sylvia Jean Reeves Kinty, 90, of Colfax, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Wishing Well Manor.
She was born April 26, 1911, in Marion County, daughter of the late Abner Leroy and Narcisses Heck Reeves.
She was a homemaker and mother. She worked at the Westinghouse Lamp Plant during World War II.
She was a member of Colfax Homemakers Association and Colfax United Methodist Church, where she often attended a Bible study group. She attended Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Her hobbies included drawing, oil painting, writing and reciting poetry, her flower garden, nature walks and quilting.
She is survived by three sons and spouses, Claude L. and Nancy Kinty, of Pleasant Valley, Lyle Keith Kinty, of Canal Fulton, Ohio, and Jerry and Jerry Louise Kinty, of Whitehall; a daughter and spouse, Wilma Jean and Albert Hoffmaster, of Fairmont; a daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Durham, of Fairmont; a sister, Edna White, of Hurt, Va.; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Lee Kinty, on March 26, 1993; a son, Joseph Edward Kinty; two brothers, James Henry Reeves and Clarence Reeves; and a sister, Nancy Ida Baker.

Waneta June Harris, 76, of Fairview, died Monday Aug. 6, 2001, at home.
She was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Shinnston, daughter of the late Gerald L. and Katherine M. Heldreth Lucas.
She is survived by two sons and a spouse, Kenneth R. and Sherri Harris, of Fairview, and Jerry W. Harris, of Fairview; two brothers and spouses, Gerald Franklin and Mildred Lucas, of Peorie, and Raymond Marlin and Pamela Lucas, of Fourstates; two sisters and a spouse, Deloris R. "Peg" Parrish, of Fairview, and Sharon Sue and Eddie Fetty, of Joe Town; and five grandchildren, Michael, Courtney, Amber and Jacob Harris, and Jay Auvul.

Godfrey C. Wotring
Word has been received of the death of Godfrey C. Wotring, 76, on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001.
Son of the late Clyde and Ocie Wotring, he was born in Aurora, and had been an area resident for many years.
He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and had been employed as a meatcutter for A&P and Acme stores. He was semi-retired and employed by Semco Auto Parts. He attended the Valley Community Church and was a member of the VFW Barberton Post.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters and spouses Brenda and David Burbridge, of Akron, Ohio, and Pamela and Thomas Averill, of Colfax, N.C.; a son, Godfrey Jr., "Sonny," of Jasper, Ga.; brothers Dale and Mick, of Bruceton Mills; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Darwin, and a daughter-in-law, Cindy.

John 'Jack' Crawford
John G. "Jack" Crawford, 72, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was born March 17, 1929, in Morgantown, son of the late Russell and Gladys Jolliffe Crawford.
He had retired in January 1997 after 43 years of continuous service with the Goodyear/Lockheed Martin Uranium Enrichment Plant. At that time he received special recognition from the secretary of the Department of Energy for his contributions at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant over the years and his efforts to develop a more effective and efficient way of removing highly enriched uranium deposits from uranium enrichment equipment. He continued to work as a consultant in the uranium enrichment industry up until his illness in 2000. He contributed to his community quietly and passionately. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Pike County and served as treasurer and founder of the Rotary Annual Spaghetti Dinner. He served as president of the Pike County Board MR/DD. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Waverly, Ohio. He was a member of the WVU Alumni Association. He taught children and adults how to swim at the Pike County Swim Club and trained most of the lifeguards in the Pike County area in the 1960s and 1970s.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, the former Susan C. Jones; stepmother, Mrs. Robert Wagner, of Portsmouth, Ohio; two children and spouses, John G. and Linda Crawford Jr., of Knoxville, Tenn., and Marianne and Glenn Freed, of Waverly; four stepchildren and spouses, Elizabeth A. Jones, of Waverly, J. Kris and Steve Muzidal, of Columbus, Ohio, M. Timothy and Carolyn Paul, of Lucasville, Ohio, and N. Tyson and Jane Paul, of Wheelersburg, Ohio; three grandchildren, John G. Crawford III, McKena Martin and Stephen Paul; two brothers, Thomas Crawford, of Montgomery, Texas, and Richard Crawford, of Abilene, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Katherine "Kitty" Casini, of Dilliner, Pa.
He was also preceded in death by a wife, the former Joan L. Morley, whom he married July 1951 at the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Dilliner.

William H. Metz
William H. Metz, 87, of 2113 Goff Ave., Clarksburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at United Hospital Center after a long illness.
He was born June 7, 1914, in Lewis County, son of the late Elash and Stella Duley Metz.
He was retired from Centurial Products, where he was a foreman for more than 33 years. He was Methodist.
He is survived by four daughters and spouses, Mary Jo and Donald Bumgardner, Shirley and Joseph Allessio, and Crystal Metz, all of Clarksburg, and Marilyn and Daryle Webb, of Bedford, Ohio; two brothers, June Metz, of Weston, and Andy Metz, of Ohio; three sisters, Maxine Hefner, Cora Musser and Mrs. Orne Jean Taylor, all of Weston; five grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pearl L. Myers Metz, whom he married on May 10, 1939; a son, John Harley Metz; and five brothers, Claude, Earl, John, George and Holbert Lee Metz.

Martin J. Kurtyka
Martin J. Kurtyka, 82, of R.D. 1, Rices Landing (Dry Tavern), Pa., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at home.
He was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Brier Hill, Fayette County, Pa., son of the late Stanley and Catherine Masuga Kurtyka.
He was a lifelong member of the Dry Tavern Sportsmen's Club. He retired from Plasteel Co. in Washington, Pa., and was formerly employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and at Buckeye Coal Mine, Nemacolin, Pa. For more than 50 years he played the accordion in several area bands. In addition to his music, he enjoyed taxidermy and, in his later years, ceramics.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie O'Brochta Kurtyka, whom he married Feb. 22, 1941; five sons, Martin A. Kurtyka, of Hagerstown, Md., James J. Kurtyka, of Willow Springs, Ill., Ronald S. Kurtyka and Gregory Kurtyka, both of Dry Tavern, and Jeffrey C. Kurtyka, of Harrisburg, Pa.; three daughters, Catherine H. Voithofer, of Middletown, Pa., Gloria J. Murphy, of Palm Coast, Fla., and Shirley A. Miller, of Renfrew, Pa.; 21 grandchildren, Brian M. Kurtyka, Mary H. Snyder, Kevin M. Kurtyka, Michael J. Kurtyka, Jeanine T. McVicker, Karen N. Foltz, Kristen A. Rielly, Chad C. Voithofer, Laura A. Saunders, Brice J. Voithofer, Leslie M. Voithofer, Christine Kurtyka, Brad Kurtyka, Jason R. Kurtyka, Ashley R. Kurtyka, Alexis A. Miller, Daniel J. Miller, Jamen Kurtyka, Casey Kurtyka, Matthew J. Kurtyka and Anne E. Kurtyka; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Anne Boots Hoy, of Mather, Pa., and Frances Pair, of Hampton, Va.
He was also preceded in death by a great-grandson, Avery James Snyder; eight brothers, John, Frank, Pete, Stanley, Chester, Joseph, Thomas and Andrew Kurtyka; three sisters, Mary Rock, Catherine Zahratka and Estella Faddis; and a son-in-law, John Miller.
