Mary Conner Brooks
Mary Jane Conner Brooks, 69, of Cheat Lake, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital following a long illness. She was born July 26, 1932, in Brookhaven, daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie Brafford Conner. She worked at Heck's Department Store and was a fabric upholsterer. She was Methodist. She is survived by her husband, Johnny E. Brooks, whom she married Oct. 29, 1949; a daughter and spouse, Diana and Russell Barnett, of Brookhaven; a son and spouse, with whom she lived for the last year, John and Cathy Brooks, of Brookhaven; two sisters, Lucy Whipkey, of Westover, and Ruth Garletts, of Painesville, Ohio; a brother, James Conner, of Florence, S.C.; two grandchildren and spouses, Kimberly and Deon McMillen, of Brookhaven, and David and Jennifer Barnett, of Morgantown; and five great-grandchildren, Scott and Dustin McMillen, and Casey, Keirsten, and Colby Barnett. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Charles Brooks; and a brother-in-law, Oren Whipkey. Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday. Jean M. Anderson Knopp
Jean M. Anderson Knopp, 44, of Spencer, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a sudden illness. She was born Sept. 4, 1956, in Monongalia County, daughter of Rubie Marie Howdershelt Anderson, of Morgantown, and the late James William Anderson. She was a fourth-grade teacher at Spencer Primary Center, a graduate of Louisiana Tech, and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a vocalist in Roane County and the surrounding area. She had appeared in the Roane Arts and Humanities Council production of "Annie." She was a member of the World of Faith Fellowship, Spencer. She is also survived by her husband, Kyle Knopp, of Spencer; brothers, Bob Anderson, of Leesburg, Va., and David Anderson, of Morgantown; a sister, Deborah McGinnis, of Morgantown; three nieces; and three nephews. Juanita Loudermill
Juanita F. Loudermill, 75, formerly of Farmington, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Arbors of Fairmont nursing facility. She was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Farmington, daughter of the late Dayton and Freda Pigott Wolfe. She was a homemaker and member of Oakhurst Church of Christ. She is survived by two daughters, Valjean Haught, of Farmington, and Brenda Collins, of Fairmont; a son, William Daniel "Danny" Loudermill Jr., of Worthington; two brothers, Charles Dayton Wolfe, of Mannington, and Kenneth Richard Wolfe, of Farmington; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Daniel Loudermill Sr.; two brothers, Everett Gay Wolfe, and Robert Eugene Wolfe; and a sister, Eva Dorothy Wolfe. Evan Anthony Costello
Evan Anthony Costello, infant son of Timothy Lee Costello Jr. and Kimberly Dawn Soccorsi, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born July 6, 2001, in Morgantown. He is also survived by four grandparents, Ed and Ginger Lee Miller, of Grafton, Margaret Sirbaugh, of Kingwood, and Timothy Costello Sr., of Kingwood; five great-grandparents, Betty Soccorsi, of Masontown, Patty and Ed Moats, of Grafton, and Alice and Bill Costello, of Kingwood; a half brother, Dakota Hall, of Tunnelton; four stepsisters, Tabitha Miller, Charlene Miller and Samantha Miller, of Bluefield, and Marlene Chocky, of Rosemont; seven aunts, Crystal Clark, of Kingwood, Donna Stoehr and Misty Moran, both of Elkins, Sandy Fox and Shelly Raddish, of Pennsylvania, Della Moats, of Grafton, and Maria Soccorsi, of Masontown; and six uncles, Nathaniel Clark, of Kingwood, Jamie Soccorsi and Edward Moats, both of Grafton, Pete Fox and Mark Raddish, both of Pennsylvania, and Mike Soccorsi, of Masontown. Mary Lee Haney
Mary Lee Haney, 71, of Kingwood, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born April 21, 1930, in Kingwood, daughter of the late Ross Franklin and Hazel Lucille Brown Miller. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingwood Southern Baptist Church and Women's Missionary Union. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Clyde D. Haney; two sons and spouses, Pat and Sandra Haney, of Waycross, Ga., and Charles and Donna Haney, of Kingwood; a daughter and spouse, Teresa and Chuck Coffman, of Masontown; three brothers, Mervin "Bruce" Miller, of Kingwood, Harry "Jack" Miller, of Naples, Fla., and Charles "Frank" Miller, of Morgantown; a sister, Martha Jane Brown, of Kingwood; and five grandchildren, Susan, Kylan, Michael, Kenneth and Keith Haney. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Haney; two brothers, Robert L. Brown and James W. Miller; and a sister, Gladys Hope Gardner. G. Danny Rochester
G. Danny Rochester, 55, of Reedsville, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at home. He was born Nov. 22, 1945, in Cascade, son of Mary G. Blake, of Star City, and the late Garth H. Rochester. He graduated from Valley High School in 1963. He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 152 of Morgantown, with 29 1/2 years of service. In 1972, he won the State Apprentice Scoring Contest with the highest test score in the history of the state and his record has never been beaten. He also placed in the top 15 in the National Apprentice Contest held at Purdue University in Indiana. He was Methodist. He is also survived by his wife, Nancy Wolfe Rochester; two daughters, Danielle and Christine Rochester, both of Reedsville; two sisters, Carmen Rochester Lott, of Forrest Hills, Md., and Donna Rochester Cummings, of Severn, Md.; his mother-in-law, Betty Jenkins, of Edgemere, Md.; and his stepfather, A.L. "Red" Blake, of Port Lavca, Texas. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Charlie, in 1989, and a sister, Joyce Ann Marshall in 1995. Service will be at Morgan Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, with the Rev. Jon Henry officiating. A private burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.

Charles Dale Myers
Charles Dale Myers, 69, of Grafton, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at home. He was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Simpson, son of the late George and Chloe Phillips Myers. He was retired from the Chessie Railroad as a superintendent of car distribution and a former B&O police officer. He attended Fairmont State College and was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 12, Grafton, and VFW Post 308 1, Grafton. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sarah Sue Waters; a daughter and spouse, JoEllen and Herb Dodrill, of Grafton; a son and spouse, Richard D. and Judy Myers, of Grafton; four grandchildren, Mike Dodrill, Sarah Dodrill, Valarie Myers and Vanesa Myers, all of Grafton; and a sister, Betty Current, of Weston. He was also preceded in death by a twin sister, Mary Louise Myers; five additional sisters, Alice Shirley, Rose Hulley, Edna Criss, Emma Mayhew and Ida Myers; and three brothers, Randall Myers, Hubert Myers and James Myers. Ella Mae Fowler
Ella Mae Fowler, 80, of Smithfield, Pa., formerly of the Point Marion area, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in Uniontown Hospital. She was born in Lake Lynn, Pa., Jan. 1, 1921, daughter of the late William J. and Bertha Frankenberry Hurshman. She was formerly employed as a nurse's aide in both Monongalia General and Uniontown hospitals. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church on Uniontown, and of the Smithfield Senior Citizens. She is survived by two children and spouses, C. Blaine and Shirley Fowler Jr., of Morgantown, and Susan and William Nash, of Smithfield, with whom she made her home; two grandchildren and spouses, Rick and Diann Fowler, of Morgantown, and Pamela and Scott Varner, of Blackville; six great-grandchildren, Ashley, Jonathan, Urijah, Dirk, Keylea and Camden; and three brothers, William Arthur Hurshman, of Uniontown, Charles Cecil Hurshman, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Albert Hurshman, of Elyria, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by a son , Jimmy Ray Fowler, in infancy; a great-grandson, Christopher Ray Fowler; two brothers, James and Raymond Hurshman, and a sister, Gladys Florence Jeffries. Della Rebecca Dotts, 87, of Fairmont, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Grafton City Hospital after a long illness. She was born May 26, 1914, in Harrisburg, Pa., daughter of the late Morgan and Carrie Mae Harbarger Gaskill. She was a homemaker and a mother. She had worked for a short while at Pearl Bakery and Westinghouse Lamp Plant, both in Fairmont. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Dotts; a son and spouse, Lawrence B. and Geri Wilson Jr., of Monroeville, Pa.; two daughters and a spouse, Shirley and Bill Keffer, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Sheila Kay Warren, of Wildwood, Ga.; a brother and spouse, Harold and Pauline Gaskill, of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Irene Stansberry, of Fairmont; two daughters-in-law, Regina Dotts and Betty Carol Wilson; nine grandchildren, a great-grandson, and several half brothers and half sisters. She was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Dotts Jr.; a brother, Charles Gaskill; a sister, Geneva Suplita, and her first husband, Lawrence B. Joan Kirby
Joan Lorraine Kirby, 54, of Fairmont, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001 at home. She was born Aug. 12, 1946, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Walter H. and Katherine Joan Hallam Layman. She taught 4th-grade at Watson Elementary School in Fairmont, and spent 32 years as a teacher in the Marion County public school system. She won several awards and authored a number of professional articles in her career as an educator. She graduated from Fairmont State College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and earned a master's in education from West Virginia University. She also did additional post-graduate study at Marshall University. She was a member the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and also held memberships in other education organizations. She attended First United Methodist Church in Fairmont and was a former member of Christ United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Larry Allen Kirby, whom she married July 3, 1971; a daughter, Carolyn JoAlice Kirby, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Walter H. Layman, of Morgantown, and John F. and Lois Layman, of Fairmont; a niece and nephew, Rosanna Marie Layman and Michael Edward Layman, both of Fairmont; an aunt, Nettie B. Layman, of Fairmont; and several cousins. The body has been cremated. There will no funeral home visitation. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13 at Maple Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Lottie Arlene Smith
Lottie Arlene Smith, 80, of Mount Morris, Pa., died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born July 11, 1921, in Kanawha County, son of the late Robert Earl and Ida Mae Gilbert Sigmon. She lived in Mount Morris since 1953 and was a longtime member of the Mount Morris Gospel Tabernacle Assembly of God Church. With her husband, she raised 27 foster children. She was a homemaker. She is survived by four daughters, Gwenda Brown, of Waynesburg, Pa., Ranetta Sidbotham, of Mount Morris, Wilma Riel, of Painesville, Ohio, and Deborah Lee, of Uniontown, Pa.; a son, Edwin Ward Smith, of Pittsfield, Maine; a foster daughter, Margie Pennington, of Hillsville, Va.; a foster son, William Belford, at home; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Miller, of Marietta, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wardie W. Smith, on Feb. 23, 1995; a son, Daniel Wayne Smith; five brothers, and three sisters. Bennie Eugene Chavis
Bennie Eugene Chavis, 57, of North, S.C. died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001. He was born in Orangeburg County, S.C., son of the late Bennie Lee and Cora Lee Williams Chavis. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Caughman, of Great Falls, S.C.; a son, Billy Chavis, of Rock Hill, S.C.; three sisters, Dee Chavis, of North, Laura F. Payne, of Valley Point (Preston County), and Shirley Ann Bailey, of West Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, William O. Chavis, of Waldorf, Md., and James Chavis, of Oxon Hill, Md. Virgie Maye Arnett
Virgie Maye Arnett, 87, of Rowlesburg, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born April 11, 1914, at Eglon, daughter of the late Ezra and Virgie Fike. She was a longtime educator who taught at Rowlesburg High School. She was a graduate of Bridgewater College. She attended Christ United Methodist Church in Rowlesburg and sang in the church choir. She held memberships in the Preston County Retired Teachers Association and the Rowlesburg Senior Center. She is survived by three sons, Dr. Jerome C. "Jerry" Arnett, of Helvetia, Dr. Edward F. Arnett, of Martinsburg, and Dr. Carroll D. Arnett, of Burnsville, Minn.; a daughter, Colette Listh, of Rowlesburg; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jerome Cayton Arnett Sr.; two brothers, the Revs. Galen Fike and Earle Fike Sr.; four sisters, Olive Huffman, Ruth Terry, Dove Miller and Virginia "Polly" Life; and a great-grandson, Dustin Keener. Nora R. Uddin Campos
Nora R. Uddin Campos, 66, of Mathless Lane, Dellslow, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in Sundale Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 29, 1934, in New York City, daughter of Ida Colon Uddin, of New York City, and the late Siage Uddin. She was a retired housekeeper and a homemaker. She is also survived by a daughter and spouse, Sallie C. Mann and Thomas Walls, of Dellslow; a brother, Hassan Uddin, of New York; three sisters, Zora Quiones, Zoynab Mann and Ida Sophia Biaz, all of New York City; five grandchildren and spouse, Chris Muniz, Josie Muniz and Geoff Johns, Plissken Vallejo, Garrett Mason Walls and Stanton Walls; four great-grandchildren, Patric Mann, Chardonne Johns, Jazman Johns and Morgan E. Tolson; and a stepdaughter, Virginia Ridgeway. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Pedro Campos Jr. Following cremation, private services will be held. Mary Junita Zinn
Mary Junita Zinn, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Kingwood, daughter of the late Frank and Alberta Davis Boring. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, canning and working in the flower garden. She previously worked in the old Arthurdale Shirt Factory. She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church of Kingwood. She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Barbara and John Menear, of Masontown, Shirley Lorinzo and Diana and Harold Sypolt, all of Bretz; a son and spouse, Michael and Diana Zinn, of Florida; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Zinn, in 1998; and two sons, Ronald and Bradley Zinn. Dr. Donald Carter
Dr. Donald Clayton Carter, 79, of Bearhunter Mountain, Elkins, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born July 30, 1922, at Blair, Neb., son of the late Earl Dion and Josephine Emma Romanowski Carter. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, the U.S. Navy Reserve and with the 2nd Battalion of the Navy SeaBees. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, Omaha, in 1950. He was a captain in the U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division, 21st Regiment, serving as a Battalion Aid Surgeon and General Medical Officer during the Korean War. He entered Duke University in 1957 to study psychiatry, later becoming an instructor there. He served as assistant division chief at Durham's Veterans Hospital. Beginning in 1968, he was an associate professor of psychiatry at West Virginia University School of Medicine, where he was director of the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and the basic behavioral sciences teaching program. After retiring in 1987, he was the medical director of the Appalachian Mental Health Center, Elkins, until 1993. He received numerous awards of merit in Missouri and West Virginia, and served as president of the West Virginia Psychiatric Association from 1977-1979. He was a member of the American Medical Association, West Virginia Medical Association, and for several years was Monongalia County Medical Society delegate to the state Medical Association. He was past master of Morgantown Lodge No. 4, AF & AM; past high priest of the Morgantown Chapter No. 30, Royal Arch Masons, and warder of the Morgantown Commandery No. 18, Knights Templar. He volunteered at the West Virginia Children's Home, was an elder of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elkins, and a member of the Dr. Lacy Bible Class. He is survived by three sons, Gregory S. Carter, of Dallas, Jeffrey Todd Carter, of Mount Rainier, Md., and Theodore Clayton Carter, of Ronceverte; a daughter, Donna L. Esker, of Olney, Md; two grandchildren, Justin Heath Carter, of League City, Texas, and Savonna Nicole Esker, of Olney; and a sister-in-law, Violet Carter, of Mount Clemons, Mich. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Selma Louise Smith, on Oct. 11, 1998; five brothers, Earl Dion Carter Jr., Lawrence, Carroll, Erwin and Russell Carter; and a grandchild, Matthew Alexander Carter. Guy Carlton Shafer
Word has been received of the death of Guy Carlton Shafer, 82, an aerospace official in Greater Hartford, Conn., formerly of Morgantown, who died Saturday, July 14, 2001, in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was born in Morgantown. His education began in Hagans in a one-room school, and he graduated from Kingwood High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University, and in 1985, received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Trinity College. He was president of Chandler Evans Control Systems in West Hartford. After the company was acquired by Colt Industries, he became senior executive vice president. He began his aerospace career at General Electric, and was project manager for the jet engine developed for fighters deployed in the Korean War. He was later general manager of GE's small aircraft engine division. He was active in a number of local and national business organizations. He was chairman of the Manufacturing Association and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a longtime member of the Aerospace Industries Association. He served on the board of the Kingswood-Oxford School and was chairman of the Hartford Graduate Center for six years. He was a corporator for the Institute of Living, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Hartford Hospital. He was the first chairman of the Combined Health Appeal for the United Way of the Capital Area. He was appointed Hartford Chairman of the National Alliance of Businessmen by President Ford and given a Presidential Citation by President Carter. He was founder of the IMSA International Motor Sports Association. He was an avid golfer and fly-fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anne Thompson Shafer; three children, Joan M. Shafer, of Maggie Valley, N.C., Marc T. Shafer, of West Hartford, and Lisa Shafer Vandenburgh, of Washington, D.C.; and four grandchildren, Andrew, William, David and Jane. Homer Hinzy
Homer Hinzy, 43, of Star City, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at home after a long illness. He was born Aug. 19, 1957, in Warren, Ohio, son of Katherine Winter Hinzy, of Kinsman, Ohio, and the late Ambrose Hinzy. He is also survived by his wife, Theresa Wills Hinzy; a daughter, Malissa Hinzy, of Greene, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Candace Wills, of Star City; a stepson, Charles Elkins, of Star City; seven sisters, Alice Kirk, of Fairmont, Juanita Scholton, of Southington, Ohio, Katie Lattimer, of Warren, Ohio, Betty Hinzy Lanham, of Tampa, Fla., Bernice Reynolds, of North Bloomfield, Ohio, Mary Richards, of Warren, Ohio, and Linda Nicholson, of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; and three brothers, Terry Hinzy, of Warren, and Bert Hinzy and John Hinzy, both of Kinsman. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George Hinzy and Robert Hinzy. Cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home.

Edward L. Townsend
Word has been received of the death of Edward L. Townsend, 86, of Weirton, formerly of Morgantown, who died Friday, July 27, 2001. He was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Uniontown, Pa., a son of the late Hugh and Ivy Lewis Townsend. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of the Weirton Steel Corp. 25-year club. He was retired from the sheet mill department of Weirton Steel as a general laborer. Before World War II, he worked for Greer Limestone and lived in the area of Greer for many years. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Jamison Townsend; three daughters and spouses, Linda and Richard Alberti, of Batesville, Ark., Roxeanne and David Helba, of Weirton, and Deana and Paul Maine, of Weirton; two sons, Randi and Robbie Townsend, of Weirton; his half brother, Jacob Anderson, of Brookhaven; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Service was in Weirton. Military service was by Weirton VFW Post 2716 Firing Squad, Post 10 Honor Guard and Tri-State Marine Corps Club.

Effie Doris Search
Effie Doris Search, 77, of Fairmont, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. She was born July 28, 1924, in Richwood, daughter of the late Earnest Lee and Anna Jane Alvis Fletcher. She served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, and spent the war at a factory repairing and assembling military aircraft. Returning home from military service, she worked as a waitress at several restaurants in the region before becoming a homemaker. She is survived by a son, Bruce Fletcher Search, and his fiancee, Stacy Ginger, of Fairview; a daughter, Patricia Search, of Fairmont; a sister and spouse, Phyllis and Godfrey Provance, of Fairmont; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey "Wade" Hawkins, Jared Wesley Hawkins, Brandi Search and William Search. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Search, in 1967; two brothers, Junior Edward Fletcher and Clarence Dale Fletcher; three sisters, Dorothy Bostick, Aretta Lee Collins and Eleanor J. Glaspell; and a son, who died in infancy. Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, until the 1 p.m. service, with the Rev. Holly Faulkner officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by members of the Marion County Military Honor Guard.

Helen E. Pietro Broglie
Helen Elizabeth Pietro Broglie, 89, of Pittsburgh, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001. She was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Morgantown, daughter of the late James and Maria Pietro. She attended local schools and graduated from the WVU School of Journalism in 1933, where she was a member of the Press Club, the journalism honorary Matrix, and a member of the Queen's Court for the May Day Festival. She was the society editor for The Dominion News until her marriage to John A. Broglie, a graduate of WVU College of Law. From 1934-1941, she worked with the late syndicated columnist Florence Fisher Parry at the Pittsburgh Press. She was an avid gardener and has been recognized for her landscape gardening at the public schools in her area. She is survived by three sons, Bruce, Leslie and Douglas Broglie, and their spouses; two daughters, Kathy Broglie Enos and Holly Broglie Yerace, and spouses; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a niece, Gloria Cunningham; and a nephew, Lawrence J. Pietro Jr., of Oviedo, Fla. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John A. Broglie; a son in infancy; three brothers, Lawrence, William, and Frank J. Pietro; a sister, Rose Pietro Salucci; and two sisters and a brother in infancy. Friends may call at William Griffiths Funeral Home, Broughton, Pa., from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Windover Hills Methodist Church.
