Ann M. Lescar
Ann M. Lescar, 81, of Carmichaels, Pa., died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at home. She was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Edenborn, Pa., daughter of the late Joseph Paul and Anna Watson Hranec. She lived in Carmichaels since 1941, and was a member of the St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church of Carmichaels. For many years, she managed the Cumberland American Legion Post 400, of Carmichaels, and served as president of the post's Women's Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Women's Auxiliary of VFW Post 4793, the Rosary Society of St. Hugh Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, Greene County Court 1923, the Catholic Golden Age, and the Women of the Moose Chapter 888. She is survived by a son and spouse, Bernard Francis Barbara Lescar, of Mentor, Ohio; a daughter and spouse, Dolores Ann and Bernard Markulik, of Parma, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Sharon Brenstuhl, Bernadette Emilio, Jeffrey Markulik, Brenda Markulik, David Markulik, Bernard Lescar Jr., Beverly Stupecki, Brian Lescar and Bonnie Coleman; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers and a spouse, Frank Hranec, of Detroit, Joseph Hranec, of Bergenfield, N.J., and John and Lucille Hranec Sr., of McClellandtown, Pa.; and four sisters and spouses, Catherine and Carson Hailey, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joanne Liston, of Masontown, Pa., Margaret and William Granchi, of Mentor, and Dolly Eleanor and Henry Mikrut, of Raritan, N.J. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank S. Lescar, whom she married Aug. 19, 1936, and who died Aug. 7, 1977; and three sisters, Mary Perkins, Helen Hranec and Rose Myers. Friends may call at Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, when a blessing service will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fairchance, Pa. A parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home followed by the recitation of the Rosary by the Rosary Society.

Edwin Earl Niner
Edwin Earl Niner, 88, of Bruceton Mills (Brandonville), died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1912, in Clifton Mills, son of the late George W. and Nora Ethel Thomas Niner. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2523. He was a retired sawyer in the timber business. He is survived by his wife, Coralene "Corky" Hixon Niner; a daughter, Shirley Conaway, of Uniontown, Pa.; two foster daughters, Kimberly A. Collins, of Grafton, and Sylvia Lee McCarty, of Tunnelton; and two sisters, Nila Grace Gussie, of Morgantown, and Nelda Mae Howe, of Greencastle, Pa. Betty Lee Clemens
Betty Lee Clemens, 73, of Grafton, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born Oct. 26, 1928, in Preston County, daughter of the late Abby Taylor. She was Free Methodist. She is survived by four sons, James Clemens, of Morgantown, William Clemens and Robert Clemens, both of Grafton, and Rodney Clemens, of Ohio; seven daughters, Wanda White, of Georgia, Mary Drummond and Donna Drummond, both of Pennsylvania, Joanna Parks and Katherine Clemens, both of Grafton, Hazel Hanlin, of Reedsville, and Luann Murray, of North Carolina; three stepdaughters, Frances and Mildred Hilling, of Morgantown, and June Reed, of California; 41 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Clemens, in 1978; and a brother, Jessie Everson. Friends may call at Waldeck Funeral Home, Masontown, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Eleanor Reynolds Gibson, 94, of Morgantown, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 4, 1906, near Flemington, Taylor County, daughter of the late Wayland Fuller and Inez Brohard Reynolds. She was a granddaughter of the late Dr. P.B. Reynolds, professor, acting president, and the first dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of WVU and pastor of the First Baptist Church, and a niece of the late Mabel Reynolds Glasscock, one of the first women to enter WVU. She was a 1924 graduate of Grafton High School. She received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from WVU in 1929. She was an active member of the WVU Campus Club for more than 60 years and a member of the Ingleside Book Club for 33 years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Morgantown and Philathea Sunday School class. She served as bookkeeper for the Girl Scouts and later was a sewing workshop leader for 4-H in Monongalia County. She and her husband were longtime members of the Morgantown Camera Club and the Mason-Dixon Park Association. She is survived by two sons and spouses, Dr. James H. and Jean H. Gibson, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Dr. William A. and Mary C. Gibson, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Dr. Joan R. Gibson, of Morgantown; a granddaughter and spouse, Lynn G. and Roger A. Karlson, of Carpinteria, Calif.; and three grandsons, Dale H. Gibson, of Denver, Michael C. Gibson, of Knoxville, Tenn., and John D. Gibson, of Griffin, Ga. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. John A. Gibson Jr., in 1989; a sister, Vivian Reynolds Boughter, in 1978; and two brothers, Dr. Carroll F. William 'Bill' M. Watton
William "Bill" M. Watton, 60, of Fairmont, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg. He was born Feb. 27, 1941, in Fairmont, son of the late Charles and Mary Brumage Watton. He worked at FMC-Imco in Fairmont for 27 years. He served with the U.S. Army for three years. His hobby was woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Roberta Mae McKinney Watton, whom he married on Dec. 19, 1959; three sons and a spouse, William M. and Janet Watton II, of Grafton, Charles Robert Watton and Marc E. Watton, both of Fairmont; a sister, Mary Ann Bartholow, of Belington; and six grandchildren, William T. Watton, Mark A. Watton, Jonathon D. Watton, Nicholas M. Watton, Kaitlyn R. Watton and Mckayla Sloan. Jane Elizabeth Palmer
Jane Elizabeth Palmer, 87, of Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at The Madison nursing facility. She was born Dec. 4, 1913, in Clarksburg, daughter of the late William F. and Cora Epler Long. She was a longtime educator who spent most of her teaching career in Monongalia County schools. She held degrees from Glenville State College and West Virginia University. She was a member of Morgantown's Harner Chapel United Methodist Church, Mount Unio* Homemakers Club, Sabraton Lions Club and the West Virginia Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by two sons and spouses, Dr. Louis C. and Barbara J. Palmer, and Dr. Dale E. and Barbara L. Palmer, all of Clarksburg; two daughters and spouses, Emilene and John Marra, of Hurricane, and Janet and Norton Smith, of Morgantown; 12 grandchildren, Deborah Hollandsworth, Rebecca Redman, Bradley Palmer, Michelle Palmer, Gregory Palmer, David Palmer, Douglas Palmer, Beth Leeder, Kristen Corley, Megan Randolph, Kevin Marra and Steven Smith; six great-grandchildren, Ryan Hollandsworth, Emily Hollandsworth, Evan Hollandsworth, Brock Redman, Samantha Leeder and Christopher Leeder; a brother, John W. Arthur Wayne LaMar
Arthur Wayne LaMar, 55, of Granville, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at home. He was born June 30, 1946, at Manown, son of Hubert LaMar, of Morgantown, and the late Hazel Virginia Boring LaMar. He was employed by Phoenix Construction Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He is also survived by his wife, Nellie Ann Hart LaMar; two daughters, Tammy Sue LaMar, of Granville, and Sherry Wilmoth, of Morgantown; three brothers and their wives, Hubert Junior LaMar, of Masontown, Darrell and Mary LaMar, of Morgantown, and James R. and Cookie LaMar, of Masontown; two sisters and spouses, Patricia and Donald Doman, of Morgantown, and Betty and Earl Miller, of Moundsville; two grandsons, Zachery Wayne LaMar and Brandon Lee Wilmoth; and a longtime friend, Buddy Lawlis, of Granville. Katherine Jeanne Mroz
Katherine Jeanne Mroz, 47, of Mount Morris, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born July 17, 1954, in Marquette, Mich., daughter of Herbert and Mary Welcher Murray, of Florida. She was a Morgantown resident for 20 years and was a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House and the Neighborhood House. She attended Spruce Street United Methodist Church, where she was a student in the church's Discipleship Bible Study Group. She formerly worked at Hallmark, on High Street. She had keen interests in philosophy and religious studies, and is remembered by her family and friends for her willingness to volunteer for human outreach causes. She is also survived by her husband, Thomas Mroz; two sons, Andrew Mroz, of Fairmont, and Anthony Mroz, of Cincinnati; two brothers and spouses, Gordon and Sherry Murray, and Guy and Diane Murray, all of Diorite, Mich.; two sisters and spouses, Victoria and Charles Rickett, of Ishpeming, Mich., and Virginia and Paul Olson, of Michigamme, Mich.; her mother-in-law, Alice Mroz, of Vulcan, Mich.; and a grandson, Andrew Facemyer. Helen Louise Grimes Reed, 76, of Bellaire Drive, Morgantown, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. She was born July 16, 1925, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Harley Cecil and Mary McCartney Grimes. She was a longtime member of Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus and a life member of Monongalia General Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Elbert M. Reed; three daughters and spouses, Harriet and Kurt Vandestouwe, Marsha and Jerry Bowermaster and Cynthia and Bill Ayers, all of Morgantown; four grandchildren, James Vandestouwe, Camille, Carrie and Jodi Bowermaster; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Pomeroy, of Point Marion, Pa., and Barbara Cupelli, of Morgantown; three brothers, Daniel Grimes, of Westland, Mich., Terry Grimes, of Morgantown, and Richard Grimes, of Forest, Va. Virginia B. Linsky
Virginia B. Linsky, 91, of Gip, Braxton County, formerly of Morgantown, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital. She was born April 23, 1910, in Adrian, Mich., daughter of the late Frank and Theresa Rafaelson Bachrach. She also lived in Detroit and Highland Park, Mich., San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. She was a student athlete who competed in tennis, track and basketball in high school. She graduated from Wayne State Teacher's College and worked for eight years as a physical education teacher in the Detroit public schools. She received the national Carol Lane Award for developing a traffic safety plan for her daughters' elementary school in Detroit. She was a receptionist for the White House Conference on Aging at age 69. She was a member of the PTA at various schools, the League of Women Voters in Morgantown, the Democratic Women's Club in Washington, and AARP. She enjoyed current events and had a love for nature, sports, travel, music and art. She visited a friend in France for 14 years. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Rivard; a son-in-law, Rick Rivard; two grandsons, Jesse and Ry; a great-grandson, Benjamin; and a sister, Louise Lane. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Benjamin Linsky; a daughter, Judy Linsky; three sisters, Siphra Rolland, Sara Ullman and Ruth Ditkoff; and three brothers, David, Jack and Robert. Oliver Zinn Martin
Oliver Zinn Martin, 78, of 1096 Charles Ave., Fairmont, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital, from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was born March 24, 1923, in Fairmont, son of the late Frank and Carrie Shaffer Martin. He was a truck driver for 35 years. He retired from Owens-Illinois, of Fairmont, in July, 1981. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having been stationed in England during World War II. He was a 1941 graduate of East Fairmont High School. He was Christian and was a member of Monongah Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan Moore Martin, whom he married on June 4, 1949; three sons and spouses, Tom and Sharon Martin, of Snellville, Ga., Denny and Becky Martin, of Monongah, and Fred and Diane Martin, of Fairmont; two brothers, Thomas Martin, of Fairmont, and Richard Martin, of Barrackville; and eight grandchildren, Lisa Sherman, Randy Martin, Sarah Martin, Johnathon Martin, Jessica Martin, Travis Martin, Kyle Martin and Shawna Martin. Zeth Daymon Cress, 2, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born June 14, 1999, in Morgantown, son of Dale "Junior" and Marilyn Goodwin Cress, of Masontown. He was enrolled in Valley Community birth-to-3 Early Intervention Program, and Children with Special Healthcare Needs. He is also survived by three brothers, Zachary, Zane and Zale Cress; a sister, Jozy Cress; paternal grandfather and spouse, Dale and Diane Cress, of Masontown; paternal grandmother, Ramona Cress, of Morgantown; maternal grandparents, Roger and Ilene Goodwin, of Morgantown; maternal great-grandmother, Myrtle Goodwin, of Morgantown; five paternal uncles and spouses, George Cress and Lois Eckert, of Morgantown, Michael and Diana Cress, James and Debbie Cress, Charles Cress and Steven Cress, all of Masontown; a paternal aunt, Judy Cress and Mike Austin, of Tennessee; a maternal uncle and spouse, Brannon and Tina Goodwin; and 12 cousins, Wesley, Whitney, James Jr. Austin, Jay, Alec and Deidre Cress, Justin and Kylie Austin, and Alana, Nikayla and Talia Goodwin. J. Worley Powell
J. Worley Powell, 97, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at HealthSouth Rehabilitation in Morgantown. He was born Sept. 29, 1903, in Etna, Pa., son of the late James W. and Lula (Hill) Powell. He lived with a daughter and spouse, Frances and Dr. Frank Bakewell, of Washington, Pa., from 1985-1999. In 1999 he moved to St. Barbaras Nursing Home in Monongah where he enjoyed social activities and played his violin. He remained mentally alert and read extensively. He maintained an interest in current events and was a fan of the Mountaineers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a retired lawyer, practicing law in Fairmont for 46 years. He received his early education in Moundsville. He graduated from WVU with a bachelor's degree in 1924 and a law degree in 1927. He retired in 1973. He was a member and past president of the Marion County Bar Association in Fairmont. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club and served on the Salvation Army Board. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at WVU. The family lived in Fairview for 25 years. He was a member of the St. Johns United Methodist Church in Basnettville. He enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing, including several fishing trips to Canada. He is survived by two daughters and a spouse, Frances and Dr. Frank Bakewell, of Washington, Pa., and Lenna Leeson, of LaVale, Md.; four grandchildren, Mark Leeson, of Orwigsburg, Pa., Laura Leeson Wright, of Rockville, Md., Dr. Susan Bakewell-Sachs, of Pennington, N.J., and Brock K. Bakewell, of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Kristin Leeson, Jason and Alex Wright, Andrew and Evan Sachs, and Kyle, Luke and Brett Bakewell; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Brock Knisely, of Blacksville. Esther Mae Wilson, 88, of Waynesburg, Pa., formerly of Heidelberg, Carmichaels and Nemacolin, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg. She was born June 17, 1913, in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late James Thomas and Loretta Sadie Deuschle Tomlinson. She lived in Carmichaels until 1990, when she moved in with her daughter, Shirley M. Hanley, of Nemacolin, until 2000. She was Presbyterian and was a member of the Carmichaels Area Women's Civic Club. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed craft work. She is survived by a son and spouse, Ronald Thomas and Noreene Wilson, of Plum Boro, Pa.; a daughter, Shirley M. Hanley, of Nemacolin; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Beck, of Corapolis, Pa. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas John Wilson, on Nov. 27, 1973; an infant son, Robert John Wilson; two brothers, Charles and James Tomlinson; and a sister, Loretta Palas. Ray Emmett Collins, 77, of Reedsville, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born May 31, 1924, in Masontown, son of the late Paul H. and Mary Pearl Zweyers Collins. He is survived by three daughters, Sharon Cress Fledderman, of Mobile, Ala., Mary Samsell, of Wallingford, Conn., and Helen Miller, of Masontown; two sisters, Geraldine Krouse, of Myersville, Md. and Neveda Clem, of Frederick, Md.; two granddaughters, Tammy Lemmon, of Gerrardstown, and Carrie Petty, of Halls, Tenn.; a grandson, Jasen Miller, of Masontown; and a great-granddaughter, Maggie E. Renshaw, of Halls, Tenn. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Ditmore Collins; two sisters, Eleanor LaRue and Marie Blosser; and a brother, Joseph Paul Collins. Charles A. Christopher
Charles A. "Charlie" Christopher, 21, of Carmichaels, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at home. He was born July 23, 1980, in Waynesburg, Pa., son of Charles M. and Sharon Lee Deblock Christopher, of Carmichaels. He was a 1999 graduate of Carmichaels Area High School and was employed by Christopher Backhoe and Plumbing Inc., of Carmichaels. He enjoyed fishing. He is also survived by two brothers, Ryan M. and Shawn C. Christopher, both of Carmichaels; a sister, Lisa Ann Christopher, of Mather, Pa.; his maternal grandparents, M. Carl and Patricia Deblock; a nephew and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clarence and Isobel Christopher. Friends may call at Yoskovich Funeral Home in Carmichaels from 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, with the Rev. Harold O. Kelley officiating. Hilda G. Jarrett Kisner
Hilda G. Jarrett Kisner, 90, of Fairmont, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born June 17, 1911, in the Watson Community of Fairmont, daughter of the late David H. and Hattie Wright Jarrett. She was a homemaker and mother. She worked for 30 years for the Marion County Tuberculosis and Health Association, now known as the American Lung Association, where she served as executive director for 19 years. She also was assistant postmaster of the U.S. Post Office, Watson Branch, while her father was postmaster. She was a member of the Central Christian Church, a former member of the Woman's Club of Fairmont and the Civic League Department of the Woman's Club. She was the first woman to serve as jury commissioner in Marion County. She was also a past vice president of the West Virginia Federation of Republican Women. She is survived by a son and spouse, William F. and Sharon Kisner Jr., of Pleasant Valley; two sisters, Margaret Gamble, of Fairmont, and Meryle Kaminsky, of Fairmont; a sister-in-law, Ann Jarrett, of Fairmont; six grandchildren and spouses, Karen Sue and Jay Bartlett, of Fairmont, David Monroe and Patti Kisner II, of Florida, Melanie and Allen Toothman, of Fairmont, Tricia L. and Scott Pedigo, of Fairmont, Alyson and Patrick Sarsfield, of Fairmont, and Amy Sue Kisner, of Fairmont; and eight great-grandchildren, Josh Bartlett, Travis Toothman, Christopher Toothman, Kayla Kisner, Sarah Pedigo, Matthew Pedigo, David M. Kisner II and Sarah Kisner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Fred Kisner, whom she married on April 20, 1933, and who was the manager of S.M. Edna Opal Boice
Edna Opal Boice, 91, of Fairmont, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Pleasant Acres Personal Care Home. She was born June 15, 1910, in Hammond near Fairmont, daughter of the late Walter and Sarah Frances Hawkins Reynolds. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and received a degree in elementary education from Fairmont State College. She taught in several schools in Marion County, including Hammond, Hoult and Grassy Run, as a full-time teacher and later as a substitute. She is survived by a sister, Grace Radcliff, of Bunner Ridge; a brother-in-law, Silas Kirk, of Fairmont; and nieces and nephews, including Vera and Paul Shroyer and Jerry and Opal Radcliff. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Francis Harrison Boice, on Nov. 10, 1977, whom she married July 22, 1933; her daughter, Sarah Lee Boice; two sons in infancy; a sister, Bertha Kirk, and a brother in infancy, Howard Reynolds. Katherine Jeanne Mroz
Katherine Jeanne Mroz, 47, of Mount Morris, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Mroz; two sons, Andrew Mroz, of Fairmont, and Anthony Mroz, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers and spouses, Gordon and Sherry Murray, and Guy and Diane Murray; two sisters and spouses, Victoria and Charles Rickett, and Virginia and Paul Olson; mother-in-law, Alice Mroz; a granddaughter, Emily Mroz and a grandson, Andrew Facemyer. R. Eleanor Mason
R. Eleanor Mason, of Atlanta, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, in Georgia. She was born in Terra Alta, daughter of the late Ross and Sabrina Mae Watson. She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Barbara and Homer Deakins, Diana and Daniel Facemyer, and Linda Mason Orr; two grandchildren, Noelle Leigh Goetz and B. Morgan Deakins; and a great-grandson, Alec Mason Goetz. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, in Terra Alta Cemetery, Terra Alta, with the Revs. Diana and Daniel Facemyer officiating. Russell Junior McCann
Russell Junior McCann, 80, of Mohan's Run Community, Mannington, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at the Arbors in Fairmont. He was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Wyatt, son of the late William Russell McCann Sr. and the late Mary Mae Flowers McCann. He was a past member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Mannington and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Wyatt; American Legion Post 40, Mannington; Lion Club of Mannington; 40 & 8 in Fairmont; VFW Post in Fairmont; and the UMW. He also conducted milita ry funerals until his health began failing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Hancock in the South Pacific during World War II, and attaining the rank of seaman first class. He was retired from Four State Coal Mine for Consolidation Coal Co. He is survived by a son and spouse, Joel and Suzi McCann, of Mannington; a sister, Billie Burke Duda, of Route 1, Fairmont; two grandchildren and spouses, Todd and Jodi Yoho, of Mannington, and Jason and Tina McCann, of Mannington; and a great-granddaughter, Jacy McCann. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby McCann, on Dec. 30, 2000; three brothers, Wilford Ray, Franklin Andrew and Hazel James McCann; and two sisters, Maxine Phillips and Eva Jane Bowman.
