Donald G. Russell
Donald G. "Grubby" Russell, 51, of West Finley, Pa., formerly of Mannington, and New Freeport, Pa., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in the Greene County Memorial Hospital, in Waynesburg, Pa. He was born Oct. 10, 1949, in Rachel, son of Gay Stout Russell, of Mannington, and the late Donald K. Russell. He first worked at Fourco Glass Co., in Clarksburg. Later, he worked at the Four States Mine until it closed, when he went to work at the Bailey Mine in Waynesburg as a buggy operator. At the time of his death, he had 26 years of service with Consolidation Coal Co. He was Methodist, and was a member of the Earl Kiger American Legion Post 120 of Hundred, and Loyal Order of Moose 461, of Waynesburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He is also survived by his former wife, Elizabeth Kennedy; two daughters, Erica Dawn Russell, and Rachel Elizabeth Russell, both of New Freeport; a brother, Roger Russell, of Mannington; and two sisters, Joyce Thorne, of Clarksburg, and Cheryl King, of Mount Top, Pa. Lucille Tatterson
Lucille Tatterson, 75, of East Grafton Road, Fairmont, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the Arbors at Fairmont, after a long illness. She was born May 23, 1926, in Fairmont, daughter of the late Martin and Minnie Greene Linn. She was a mother and homemaker. She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1945. She was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing and baking. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Marjorie and Charles Kuretza, of Fairmont; a brother and spouse, Thomas and Katy Linn, of Omaha, Neb.; three sisters and spouses, Elladeane and Jerry Hines, of Grafton, Mary Ellen and Ray Rutherford, of Grafton, and Donna and Alen Lasure, of South Carolina; and two grandchildren, Brandon Kuretza, of Fort Walter, Fla., and Lance Kuretza, of Fairmont. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Clyde Tatterson, who died April 12, 1985; a daughter, Linda Susan Tatterson, who died November 1950; a brother, Eston Linn; and two sisters, Nellie Shackelford, and Gertrude Stevens. Eileen F. O. Lundquist
Eileen Francell Olson Lundquist, 80, of Kingwood, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 3, 1920, in St. Paul, Minn., daughter of the late Albert and Christine Fagerwick Olson. She was a homemaker. She was an avid volunteer and the "grandmother" of the K.A.R.E. Academy, and the Kingwood Apostolic Church, where she was also a member of the choir, and the ladies' auxiliary. She is survived by three daughters, Krystal Brown, of Alaska, Gayle Gillespie, of Kingwood, and Debbie Feifarek, of Minneapolis; a brother, Ervin Olson, of Washington; two sisters, Ruth Hammergren, and Grace Lazar, both of St. Paul; 16 grandchildren, Misha Brown, Ben Jamin Brown, China Brown, Asia Brown, Ian Brown, Brittany Brown, Ilya Brown, Kimberly Gillespie, Nathan Gillespie, Mark Gillespie, Christa O'dell, David Gillespie, Natosha Gillespie, David Feifarek, Robbie Feifarek and Anna Feifarek; and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fayne Edward Lundquist; a granddaughter, Stephanie Renea Gillespie Curtner; two brothers, Kenneth Olson, and Harvey Olson; and two sisters, Alice Zwick, and Verna Hanson. Sarah Seese
Sarah Lillian Dorena Whitesell Fike Seese, 94, of Kingwood, and formerly of Bruceton Mills, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born Nov. 6, 1906, in Chicago, daughter of the late Earnest P. and Corel Edith Feather Whitesell. She graduated from Bruceton High School. She farmed for 40 years in Bruceton Mills and later cooked at Mary's Restaurant in Kingwood. She was salad supervisor with food service at WVU's Towers Residence Halls. She was active in her community, serving as a 4-H leader, a Preston Memorial Hospital ambassador, a Red Cross Blood Drive volunteer and an election day poll worker. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Preston County Homemakers Club, which selected her as a Preston County Belle. She was also a member of the Bruceton Historical Society, which interviewed her, and her recollections of the Bruceton Mills area at the turn of the last century are part of the archives. She was a skilled seamstress and made several Buckwheat Festival court gowns and a robe for King Buckwheat. She was awarded numerous ribbons for her cooking and crafts, including Best of Show for a cathedral quilt in 2000 at the age of 93. She traveled throughout the United States and Europe. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Frances Ann and Paul Ryan, of Kingwood; a daughter-in-law, June Fike, of Lancaster, Pa.; two stepdaughters and a spouse, Joanne and Richard Fiorini, of Wilmington, Pa., and Elaine Barbour, of Barstow, Calif.; a foster grandchild; eight stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Fike; her second husband, Carl Seese; a son, James Fike; a foster child, Penny Metheny; and a sister, Julia Whitt. Lillie G. Mercer, 67, of Wadestown, Saint Leo Community, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at home. She was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Arnettsville, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Marie Martin Gaskill. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Faith Chapel of Wana. She is survived by her husband, Vernon Mercer; four daughters and spouses, Liz and Ronnie Jones, of Wadestown, Sue Price, of Wadestown, Lynne and Everett Sine, of Jakes Run, and Debbie and Wesley Price, of Wana; four brothers and spouses, Harry Lee and Margaret Gaskill, of Gray, Ga., Vance and Roberta Gaskill, of Star City, Chuck and Jo Ann Gaskill, of Everettsville, and David Gaskill, of Star City; a sister and spouse, Vera and Darius Drain, of Booth; and eight grandchildren. Alfred W. Scudiere
Word has been received of the death of Alfred W. Scudiere, 71, of Littleton, Colo., formerly of Morgantown, on Aug. 20, 2001. He was born Jan. 13, 1930, in Fairmont, son of the late Peter and Flora Scudiere. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a sergeant first class during the Korean War. He received an Army Commendation Medal. He was named Manager of the Year at Wyatts Cafeteria. He graduated from Morgantown High School. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary E. Scudiere; a daughter, Delores Gordon, of Littleton; and four grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son, Christopher Scudiere; a sister, Mary Louise Scudiere Mulligan; a brother, Rudolph Scudiere; and four grandchildren. Doris Elizabeth Boylan
Doris Elizabeth Boylan, 86, of Masontown, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 29, 1914, in Preston County, daughter of the late Clarence and Carlie Hoffman Ennis. She was a World War II veteran having served as a staff sergeant with the Women's Army Corps. She re-enlisted into the Women's Air Force. She received several commendations and medals during her tour, including the Distinguished West Virginian Award presented to her by former Gov. Gaston Caperton. She retired from Sterling Faucet Co. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 1578 in Masontown and was a member of Clarksburg Post 573. She is survived by a son and spouse, Robert "Bo" and Kathy Boylan, of Clarksburg; a daughter and spouse, Deborah and Mickey Myers, of Arthurdale; four grandchildren, Aaron Boylan, Deedre Myers, Tara Myers and Mickey "Major" Myers; a sister, Norma Whipkey, of Arthurdale; and two brothers, Raymond Ennis, of Arthurdale, and Robert Ennis, of Masontown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Boylan Sr.; two brothers, Earl Ennis and Harold Ennis; and a sister, Ruth Ennis. LeRoy F. Bittaker
LeRoy F. Bittaker, 85, of New Lenox, Ill., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Manteno Veteran's Home in Illinois. He was born April 16, 1916, in San Diego, son of the late Henry and Winifred Bittaker. He joined the U.S. Army in 1937. He drove a mule-drawn wagon loaded with ice for Alcatraz Island. He manned a radio station in France during World War II and was a classified weapons inspector. After retiring from the Army as a chief warrant officer with 30 years of service, he resumed activity with a HAM radio and talked to people across the world. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of New Lenox, ARRL HAM Radio Club, Masonic Lodge 68 A.F.&A.M., Albuquerque, N.M., and a life member of the "R etired Army Officers Association." He is survived by his wife, Mary Gallagher Bittaker; a son and spouse, Henry and Susan Bittaker, of Florida; six stepchildren and spouses, Elsie Whitelaw, of New York, Earl and Diane Duck, of Texas, William and Karen Duck, of Colorado, Michael and Marily* Gallagher, of New Lenox, Martha and Joseph Squellati, of Wilmington, Ill., and John and Marion Gallagher, of Florida; a sister-in-law, Freda Bailey, of Westover; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Buelah Duck Bittaker; a brother and a sister. Ronald 'Jim' Harvey
Ronald "Jim" Harvey, of Fairmont, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at home. He was born in Monongalia County, son of the late Lorenzo Harvey and Eveleyn Sponaugle Zarka. He was a retired truck driver with 38 years of service from Eaton Axle. He completed more than 200 parachute jumps as a U.S. Army paratrooper in World War II, and his tours of duty included posts at Alaska and Honolulu. He was a member of VFW Post 7048, in Fairmont. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Wanda Tennant Harvey; a stepson and his wife, Dewey David Jr. and Susan Garrison, of Shreve, Ohio; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Darlene and Charles Miller, and Dianna and Bill Markley, all of Cleveland; a sister, Wanda McCurdey, of Indiana; eight stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Theodore Harvey. Rilla Ammons
Rilla T. Ammons, 93, of Bradford, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, in Warren General Hospital, Warren, Pa. She was born Oct. 1, 1907, in Daybrook, daughter of the late Leslie Seckman and Mary F. Moore Tennant. She was a homemaker and had formerly worked at Ethel Everly's Gift Shop, in Eldred, Pa. She was a 1927 graduate of Fairview High School. She was the last remaining charter member of Bradford Church of Christ. She is survived by two daughters, Rita M. Beal, of Warren, and Carol N. Bidwell, of Rew, Pa.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was also preceeded in death by her husband, Corbly "Jube" Ammons, on March 10, 1976. Patience R. Whittaker
Patience Renee Whittaker, 24, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 30, 1976, daughter of Pamela R. Whittaker, of Arthurdale, and the late Clyde E. Whittaker Jr. She worked with the handicapped at Res-Care. She is also survived by a 6-year-old daughter, Chandra Grace Mancusco, of Reedsville; and her fiance, Rodney R. Jones Jr., of Morgantown, with whom she made her home. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Chad Edward Whittaker; and her grandmother, Nettie Grace Sisler Menear. Leon Ruble Jr.
Leon Ruble Jr., 76, of Point Marion, Pa., died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at home. He was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Lake Lynn, Pa., son of the late Leon and Verna Knapky Ruble Sr. He was a laborer in area coal mines and glass plants. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 499 of Point Marion. He is survived by two children, Thomas Ruble and Linda Ruble, both of Massachusetts; and eight brothers and sisters, Franklin Knapky, of Fairchance, Pa., Kathryn Milazzo, of Valley Stream, N.Y., Bernice M. John Wayne Efaw
John Wayne Efaw, 73, of Maple Avenue, Grafton, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg. He was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Grafton, son of the late Harry Alfred Efaw and Ollie O'Dell Swiger Efaw. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II. He worked as a clerk for CSX Railroad in Grafton for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Railroad Clerks Union and was a very faithful member of St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Grafton. He was past exalted ruler and past secretary of the BPOE Lodge 308, of Grafton. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Miller Efaw; two children and spouses, Gary W. and Sandy Efaw, and Judy L. and Bill Duckworth, all of Grafton; four granddaughters and spouses, Erica Efaw, of Grafton, Tracie and Wayne Weiss, of Fairmont; Jennifer and Brent Moran, of Grafton, and Krista and Bruce Perks, of Grafton; five great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brandon Weiss, Alexis and Brooklyn Perks, and Lyndsey Moran; and a sister, Freddie Robinson, of Grafton. Lula Ann Ferguson, 98, of Fairmont, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born Aug. 16, 1903, in Montrose, daughter of the late Tolbert Lee and Ingabe Shoemaker Ferguson. She was retired from Washington Lamp Plant in Fairmont, with 24 years of service in the seal beam department. She was a member of Leading Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Montrose. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidery. She is survived by two sisters, Lucy Ferguson, with whom she made her home, and Brigetta Ferguson, both of Fairmont; a nephew and spouse, Paul and Pat Ferguson; three nieces and spouses, Edna and Bill Weaver, of Fairmont, Helen Hardesty, of Fairmont, and Doris and John Shaw, of Springfield, Va. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Carl Ferguson, William Ferguson, Calvin Ferguson and Howard Ferguson; and two nephews, Carl Ferguson and Donald Ferguson. Gay Bernita Morgan, 58, of Enterprise, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born Aug. 25, 1943, in Hoodsville, daughter of the late F. Basil and Bernice A. DeVault Moore. She retired as manager of the Shinnston Dairy Mart and also worked at Westinghouse, Fairmont. A born again Christian, she was an active member of Owing Community Church, where she was a member of the Women's Society. She enjoyed traveling, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert L. Velma Violet Carroll, 84, of Mannington, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born Feb. 20, 1917, at Jacksonburg, daughter of the late Howard and Minnie Price Higgins. She was a member of the Mannington Church of Christ. She was a wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by two sons and a spouse, Dennis and Donna Carl, and Dean Carl, all of Mannington; two daughters and spouses, Nancy and John Hanne and Sue and Ronald Meyer, all of Mannington; three sisters, Mary Stout, of Fairmont, Lucille Richards, of Florida, and Mildred Hayhurst, of Canton, Ohio; two brothers, Jack Higgins, of Mannington, and Howard Higgins, of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Hatfield, of Fairmont, and Gail Hatfield, of St. Mary's; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. John Lewis Mullenax
John Lewis Mullenax, 84, of Horse Shoe Run, died Wednesday Sept. 5, 2001, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md. He was born Jan. 31, 1917, in Sugarlands, son of the late William Carter and Ethel Cora Knotts Mullenax. He was retired from Coastal Lumber Co. and was a member of Terra Alta Senior Citizens. He is survived by a son, William Mullenax; a daughter, Reba Williams, of Horse Shoe Run; two stepsons, Terry Fairbanks, and Lenny Delaney, both of Morgantown; four stepdaughters, Helen Roth, of Horse Shoe Run, Barbara Evans, of Leadmine, Virginia Dixon, of Amboy, and Betty Slaubaugh, of Morgantown; a brother, Roy Mullenax, of Horse Shoe Run; three sisters, Leota Keller, of Terra Alta, Jean Toothman, of Fairview, and Ellen Stewart, of Elkins; two grandchildren, Rachael, and Rebecca Williams; a host of stepgrandchildren; and a dear friend, Theresa Murphy, of Terra Alta. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Delaney Mullenax; and three brothers. Friends may call at Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis, from 2-9 p.m. Thursday. Service will be at Bethel Church, in Horse Shoe Run, at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, with the Rev. Burlin Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be in Texas Cemetery.

Arthur W. Cale
Arthur W. "Dominick" Cale, 79, of Masontown, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Masontown, son of the late Charles W. and Elfie E. Shaffer Cale. He was a member of Masontown Church of the Nazarene. He served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by two daughters and a spouse, Shirley and Robert Stevenson, of Virginia, and Donna Strahin, of Independence; three sisters and spouses, Edna and Bruce Thomas, of Bretz, Grace and Calvin Gamble, of Kingwood, and Ruby Wolfe, of Fairmont; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Edward Cale, Darius Cale, Herbert Cale, Orth Cale, John Cale, and Byron Cale. Friends may call at Waldeck Funeral Home, Masontown, from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Friday, and at Mount Zion Methodist Church from noon Saturday, Sept. 8, until the 1 p.m. service, with the Rev. Jesse Keenan officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. Military rites will be be conducted at the gravesite.

Thelma B. Dykeman
Thelma Beatrice Dykeman, 92, of Drexel Hill, Pa., died Aug. 25, 2001, at Taylor Hospital, Ridley Park, Pa., after a brief illness. She was born in Kingwood on June 12, 1909, daughter of the late Clinton T. and Sara Irene Burchinal Manear. She served as a nurse during World War II with the Women's Army Corps, and after her discharge was employed for many years by John Wanamaker's Department Store in Philadelphia. Survivors include two grandsons and a spouse, Ronald and Joan Hill, and Robert Hill, all of Drexel Hill; a granddaughter, Marcia Hill Flack, of West Chester Pike, Pa.; two great-grandsons, Kevin and Matthew Hill, of Drexel Hill; a daughter-in-law, Betty Burns Hill, of Drexel Hill; a brother and spouse, Claude C. and Hazel Manear; and a sister and spouse, Virginia and Edward S. Elliott, all of Kingwood. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Victor H. Hill, of Terra Alta; her second husband, Welby E. Dykeman, of Havertown, Pa., who died in 1982; a son, Charles Ronald Hill, of Drexel Hill, in August 2000; a sister, Mabel Manear, and her spouse, Edgar W. Armstrong; and a great-granddaughter, Megan Flack. Services were at Donahue Funeral Home in Upper Darby, Pa., with the Rev. Barbara Keyser, of St. Andrews Methodist Church, Havertown, Pa., officiating. Burial followed with full military honors at Arlington Cemetery in Havertown on Aug. 31, 2001.
