Dr. Donald C. Carter
Dr. Donald C. Carter, 79, of Bearhunter Mountain, Elkins, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
He was born July 30, 1922, in Blair, Neb., son of the late Earl Dion Carter and Josephine Emma Romanowski Carter.
He was a 1940 graduate of Blair High School. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, the U.S. Navy Reserve, and the 2nd Battalion of the Navy Sea Bees. A 1950 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha, Neb., he served with the U.S. Army as a captain in the 24th Infantry Division, 21st Regiment as a battalion aid surgeon and general medical officer in Korea and Japan during the Korean War.
He entered psychiatry at Duke University in 1957 and later became an instructor at the university and served as assistant division chief at Durham's Veterans Hospital. Beginning in 1968, he was employed by the WVU School of Medicine as associate professor of psychiatry and was director of Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and the Basic Behavioral Sciences Teaching Program.
Following retirement in 1987, he worked as medical director of Appalachian Mental Health Center in Elkins until retiring in 1993. He received numerous merit awards in Missouri and West Virginia, and served as president of the West Virginia Psychiatric Association from 1977-1979.
He held memberships in the American Medical Association and the West Virginia State Medical Association, for which he served several years as a Monongalia County Medical Society delegate. He was a past member of the Morgantown Lodge No. 4 AF & AM, a past high priest of the Morgantown Chapter No. 30 Royal Arch Masons, and a warder of the Morgantown Commandery No. 18 Knights Templar. He was a volunteer at the West Virginia Children's Home, and was an elder at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and a member of the Dr. Lacy Bible class.
He is survived by three sons, Dr. Gregory S. Carter, of Dallas, Jeffrey Todd Carter, of Mount Rainier, Md., and Theodore Clayton Carter, of Ronceverte; a daughter, Donna L. Esker, of Olney, Md.; two grandchildren, Justin Heath Carter, of League City, Texas, and Savonna Nicole Esker, of Olney, Md.; a sister-in-law, Violet Carter, of Mount Clemons, Mich.; two nieces; and two nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, whom he married on July 21, 1946, Selma Louise Smith, on Oct. 11, 1998; five brothers, Earl Dion Carter Jr., Lawrence Carter, Carroll Carter, Erwin Carter, and Russell Carter; and a grandchild, Matthew Alexander Carter.
Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, N.C.
Mary Lou Stump
Word has been received of the death of Mary Lou Stump, 70, of Romney, on Monday, Aug. 27, 2001.
She was born Aug. 29, 1930, daughter of the late Arthur G. and Alta Monroe Kent.
She attended West Virginia University, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She was employed for many years by the Hampshire County Board of Education. She was also a member of the Romney Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, George A. Stump; two sons and spouses, Tom and Christie Dietz Stump, of Romney, and Andy and Louise Skonier Stump, of Farmington, N.M.; a daughter, Laura Stump, of Loveland, Colo.; a brother, Ben Kent, of Silex, Mo.; and a grandson, Taylor Stump, of Farmington.

Dane Arthur DeBerry
Dane Arthur DeBerry, 77, of Brookhaven Road, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.
He was born May 20, 1924, in Uniontown, Pa., son of the late K.W. McCartney and Grace DeBerry Hess.
He was a 34-year employee of Lyle Horton Ford and Chrysler Dodge. He was also a World War II veteran, serving two tours in Europe. He was raised by his grandparents, Edgar and Lucy Hess, of Preston County.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Ellen Kiger DeBerry; two sons, William Butch DeBerry, of Charlotte, N.C., and Randy DeBerry, of Morgantown; two daughters, Clara Louise Null, of Memphis, Tenn., and Pati Ann Klunk, of Dover, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, until the 11 a.m. service, with Pastor Elizabeth W. Baker and the Rev. Evelyn C. Higgins
Evelyn Catherine Higgins, 83, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Mon Pointe Continuing Care Center.
She was born Nov. 28, 1917, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Rymer Harrison and Mary Ava Myers Higgins.
She was a lifetime member of First Christian Church, and was employed at West Virginia University for 22 years, where she worked for the School of Dentistry and the physical plant, until her retirement.
She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Donna Kay Thomas and Terry R. Grimes, of Morgantown; two grandchildren, Ellen Marie Lorant Harris, of Jesup, Ga., and Jeffrey Lee Lorant, of Morgantown; three stepgrandchildren, Phillip Mike Grimes, and Cyann Sue Benoit, both of Morgantown, and John Harley Grimes, of Beckley; two great-grandchildren, Alisa Kay Grimes, of Jesup, and Kristen Benoit, of Morgantown; and a sister, Pauline Growall, of Richmond, Va.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Dale Higgins; and a sister, Carmel Higgins.

Harold Blaine Forman
Harold Blaine Forman, 76, of Oneca, Fla., formerly of Terra Alta, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Manatee Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 18, 1925, in Terra Alta, son of the late James Harley and Bessie Forman.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post 548 in Morgantown. He moved to Oneca in 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Straight Forman, of Oneca; two sons and a spouse, Blaine Forman, of Morgantown, and Mike and Patty Forman, of Pickerington, Ohio; four grandchildren, Tracey Pavalok and Kerry Forman, both of Morgantown, and Kristina Kelly and David Forman, both of Pickerington; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Kaden Pavolok, both of Morgantown; two sisters and a spouse, Pauline and Bill Fearer, of Terra Alta, and Helen Carroll, of Oakland, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lorraine Franklin Forman.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Community Baptist Church in Oneca.
William Isenhart Cain Jr.
William Isenhart Cain Jr., 83, of Morgantown, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.
He was born May 11, 1918, in Fairmont, son of the late William I. and Dorothy Eisenhart Cain.
He was an athlete whose character skills and dedication are to be emulated by all. He was a 1940 graduate of the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Romney. He had an opportunity to try out for the Chicago Bears in 1940. He was an outstanding all-around basketball and football player. His team, the Akron Silents, was awarded the Tri-State Tournament Championship Trophy in 1955. He had also been an avid bowler since 1970. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for the W.Va. School for the Deaf and Blind on June 24, 1995. He was president of the Deaf Association for many years. He was an upholsterer for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Rogers, with whom he made his home for the past 12 years; four grandchildren, Bonnie Paules, Mark, Jimmy and Monica Rogers; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Hannah Paules, and Alexis and Madison Rogers; and six nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Janet F. Cain.
Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Gocking officiating. Cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home. Donations: W.Va. School for the Deaf and Blind, Main Street, Romney, WV 26757.
Carlton S. Pullin
Carlton S. Pullin, 94, of Confluence, Pa., formerly of Hazelton, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Uniontown Hospital.
He was born March 2, 1907, in Addison Township, Somerset County, Pa., son of the late Alfred N. and Mary Catherine Turney Pullin.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Estella Clister Pullin, of South Fayette Nursing Center, Markleysburg, Pa.; a daughter and spouse, Elizabeth Wilson and William Guthrie, of Pella, Iowa; and two brothers, Floyd E. Pullin, of Grantsville, Md., and John E. Pullin, of Addison, Pa.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur E. and Howard J. Pullin.

Leslie H. Sanders
Leslie H. Sanders, 60, of Tunnelton, Campground Community, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at home.
He was born Dec. 11, 1940, in Manheim, son of Edith Cassady Sanders, of the Campground Community, and the late Robert B. Sanders.
He was a member of the Tunnelton United Methodist Church. He was a drywall contractor, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.
He is also survived by his wife, Mary Ann Harris Sanders; a son, Kenneth W. Sanders, of Tunnelton; a stepson, Jay F. Whetstone, of Bowie, Md.; two daughters, Jeannine Marie Riley, of Charleston, and Marlene Kaye Forbes, of Masontown; three brothers, Dwight Sanders, of Tunnelton, Jerry Sanders, of Monaca, Pa., and Danny Sanders, of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Peggy Wolfe, of Harpers Ferry; and seven grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Martin Sanders.

James Ernest Triplett
James Ernest "Ernie" Triplett, 51, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, of an accident.
He was born Dec. 30, 1949, son of the late James Delbert and Viola Mae Renner Triplett.
He was co-owner of Triplett Brothers Excavating. He was a trustee of Moose Lodge 264, and Operating Engineers Local 132. He was an avid antique car collector.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Baker Triplett; six brothers and spouses, Sennett and Helen Triplett, John and Beverly Triplett, Leo Triplett, Clarence and Linette Triplett, Jack and Denise Triplett, and Randy and Georgiana Triplett, all of Morgantown; three sisters and a spouse, Dessie Triplett, Cindy Triplett, and Kathy and Mark Osborne, all of Morgantown; mother-in-law, Shirley Baker; a niece and a nephew, Justin and Jessica Gantle, who lived with him; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Tom and Kim Mason, Jennifer and Mark Zollars, and Don Baker; companion, Rhonda Marshall; and 32 nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dollie Triplett, in 1971; and a brother, Roy Triplett, in 1999.

Samuel Roger Beckner
Samuel Roger Beckner, 85, of Fairmont, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at home.
He was born May 14, 1916, in Fairmont, son of the late Clergy Dell and Daisy Mae Whitehair Beckner.
He retired from Owens Illinois glass plant maintenance department in 1975. He was a life member of the NRA and was a member of Ponderosa Riding Club and Bunners Ridge Riding Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Marie Santella Beckner; two sons and spouses, Robert Anthony Beckner, and Donald Ray and Carolyn Beckner, all of Fairmont; a sister, Grace Marie Rutherford, of Morgantown; three granddaughters, Cindy Jo Vincent, Christy Lynn Goss and Donna Mecol Herakovich; a grandson, Roger Anthony Beckner; and three great-grandsons, Justin Merrick Vincent, and Michael and Loagan Goss.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Delbert Beckner; a sister, Rheta Masters; and two daughters and two sons who died at infancy.

Sylvia Dale Ammons
Sylvia Dale Ammons, 81, of Fairview, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the home of her son, Roger Ammons, of Boonesboro, Md.
She was born April 16, 1920, in Fairview, daughter of the late Learney French and Mary Alice Jones Brookover.
She was a member of the Pumpkin Center Church of Christ and a former employee of Fairmont State College.
She is survived by four sons, William Jesse Tennant, of Youngstown, Ohio, Ronald Leon Ammons and Leanord French Ammons, both of Fairview, and Roger Ammons; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira Stanley Ammons; a son, Melvin Larry Ammons; two brothers, Bertie and Jacob Brookover; and two sisters, Hattie Gale Hamilton and Stella Tennant.

Larry R. Mills Sr.
Larry R. Mills Sr., 64, of Waynesburg, Pa., died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at home.
He was born April 5, 1937, in Owings, son of the late Elizabeth Belan Mills and Ernest Mills.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Waynesburg Elks Lodge 757, and the UMWA Local 1570. He worked as a coal miner for 32 years retiring Sept. 17, 1998, from federal mine No. 2 in Fairview.
He is survived by two daughters, Elaine Cox, and Melanie Becker, both of Waynesburg; three sons, Larry R. Mills Jr., of Fairmont, Ernest Mills, of Jefferson, Pa., and Wade D. Mills, of Waynesburg; five grandchildren, Billy Becker, Lauren Becker, Lindsey Mills, Lashley Mills and Ronnie Mills; and two sisters, Janet Carder, of Four States, and Brenda Mills, of Woodford, Va.

Ralph Richard "Dick" Popielewski, 56, of Kingwood, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 24, 1944, in Howesville, son of Peter and Dorotha Miller Popielewski, of Kingwood.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a dispatcher for Kimberly Concrete of Kingwood.
He is also survived by his wife of 32 years, Pam Strahin Popielewski; a daughter, Shelley Popielewski, of Kingwood; and two sisters, Sharron Poland, of Tunnelton, and Diana Popielewski, of Kingwood.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Carolyn Weaver, and Delores Phillips.

Dorotha Evelyn Phillips Fluharty, 87, of Plum Run community, Mannington, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at home.
She was born July 13, 1914, in Fairview, daughter of the late Charles and Martha Knisley Phillips.
She was a member of Plum Run United Methodist Church, where she taught the children's Sunday school class for many years. She also was a member of the Ladies Aid. She was a 1932 graduate of Fairview High School.
She is survived by two sons and spouse, Darold J. and Nellie Fluharty, of Mannington, and Melvin W. and Sue Fluharty, of Burton; three grandchildren and spouses, Lee Ann and Jim Calvert, of Lynchburg, Va., Craig Allen and Amy Fluharty, of Burton, and Chris Scott and Carla Fluharty, of Burton; three great-grandchildren, twins, Danielle and Amber Fluharty, and Lauren Calvert; and a sister and spouse, Mary and Earl Yost, of Waynesburg, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kester C. Fluharty, on Feb. 7, 1981; two sisters, Anna Seaman, and Ella Berry; a brother, William Phillips; and two half sisters, May Fetty, and Ruth Knisley.

Master Sgt. Dennis E. Bell, 37, of 619 Dandridge Drive, Fayetteville, N.C., died Sept. 5, 2001, at Fayetteville.
He was born March 5, 1964, in Maryland, son of Robert Bell, of Terra Alta, and the late Patricia Bell.
He served 18 years in the U.S. Army.
He is also survived by his wife, Katia, of Fayetteville; two sons, Dennis, of Fayetteville, and Justin, of West Virginia; a daughter, Alexis, of Fayetteville; and three brothers, Gary, Kenneth and Brian.
James D. Herndon
James D. Herndon, 79, of Fairmont, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born Aug. 5, 1922, in Richmond, Va., son of the late Charles Akery and Bessie Phillips Herndon.
He was a retired truck driver for the Teamsters Local 557. He drove for several trucking firms over the years, including Davison Express, Baltimore-New York Express, Roadway and Smith Transfer. He attended the Fellowship Baptist Church in Fairmont. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine Morris Herndon; a daughter and spouse, Janet Lee and Michael Heil, of Baltimore; three brothers and spouses, Harry and Edith Herndon, of Illinois, Floyd and Arlene Herndon, of California, Chester and Lillie Herndon, of Florida, and Martha Herndon, of Baltimore; three sisters and a spouse, Delphia Sanders, of Fairmont, Velma Tetrick, of Pennsylvania, and Dorothy and Jim Collins, of Baltimore; two grandsons and a spouse, Michael Lee and Karen Heil Jr. and James David Heil, all of Baltimore; five great-grandchildren, Sarah and James David Heil Jr., and Amber, Stephanie and Jessica Smithton.

Daniel R. Pestun Jr.
Daniel R. Pestun Jr., 45, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, while performing volunteer work with his church at the WVU football game.
He was born Jan. 6, 1956, in Morgantown, son of the late Daniel R. and Shirley Wiles Pestun.
He was a member of the New Life Ministries Church of Morgantown, where he served as a worship team leader. He graduated from Morgantown High School and received a bachelor's degree from WVU in music education/trumpet. He was an elementary school music teacher and taught band and choral music in several schools in the Charleston and Morgantown areas including Horace Mann Junior High School, University High School, Morgantown High School, Cass Elementary School and Westover Elementary School.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Mason Pestun; two sisters and spouses, Pamela (his twin) and Steven Maxwell, of Morgantown, and Shirley and Tim White, of Alexandria, Va.; a brother and spouse, Donald and Kathy Pestun, of Damascus, Md.; four aunts, Juanita Cottrell, of Baltimore, Jane Pestun, of Morgantown, Carolyn Pestun, of Charles Town, and Peggy Wiles, of Pittsburgh; and 12 nieces and nephews, Sarah, Maria, Anita and Samuel Maxwell, Paul, Kyle and Cody Pestun, Andrew and Elise White, Erin and Kelly Mason, and Morgan Lawrence.

Junior Ross Bolyard
Junior Ross Bolyard, 89, of Thornton, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001.
He was born Jan. 4, 1912, in Taylor County, Maple Run community, son of the late Alvie Ross Bolyard and Lula Walter Bolyard.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and Italy. He was a retired truck driver, employed by Jennings Coal Co. for many years. He was a member of the Blueville Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Chipps Bolyard, whom he married Feb. 21, 1942; two daughters and spouses, Sharon and Steven Smith, and Lana and Ernest Cooke, all of Morgantown; a foster daughter, Rita Rodeheaver, of Albright; two daughters, Stephanie and Christina; three grandchildren and spouses, Wendy Annon, Cynthia and Jeffrey Perdue, and Edward and Jenna Annon; a sister and spouse, Billie and Robert Moore, of Thornton; a brother and spouse, Beryl and Kathaleen Bolyard, of Morgantown; five great-grandchildren, Zachery, Ryan and Joshua Blosser, and Devan and Hailey Perdue; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Tara Cunningham, Amanda and Jeremiah Perdue.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Carl; and a sister, Mildred Evans.
Friends may call at Bartlett Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and at the Blueville Church of Christ from noon Tuesday, Sept. 11, until the 1 p.m. service, with Jeff Johnson officiating. Burial will be in W.Va. National Cemetery in Pruntytown, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 3081, American Legion, Taylor County Post 12 and DAV Chapter 24. Robert D. Weakley
Robert D. "Jughead" Weakley, 69, of Wana, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown.
He was born March 23, 1932, in Morgantown, son of the late Wilbur D. and Bessie Berry Weakley.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Hundred American Legion Post 120 and the DAV 123 at Waynesburg, Pa. He attended the Clay-Battelle Area Senior Center in Blacksville and was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program. He worked as a bartender and laborer.
He is survived by a sister and spouse, Dorothy and Tom Simpson, of Wana; a brother-in-law, Robert Platt; four nieces, Sandra Newberry, Peggy Martin, Sharon Varkonyi and Linda Walker; a nephew, Robert "Butch" Platt; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Emma Platt; a nephew, Richard Simpson; and a great-nephew.
Friends may call at Owen-Neely Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, with Pastor Tim Brower officiating and the Rev. David Lancaster co-officiating. Burial will follow in Eakin Cemetery in Wana. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Mount Morris American Legion Post 992.
Betty Lee McMillen
Betty Lee McMillen, 74, of Baltimore, formerly of Morgantown, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001.
She was born in Morgantown.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Franklin McMillen; five sons, Eric, Richard, Charles Jr., Kevin and Jeffrey McMillen; a daughter, Jacquelyn; three brothers, Robert, Lee and Wes Metheny; a sister, Barbara Utt; a half-brother, Gary Metheny; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk Inc., Baltimore, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and from noon Tuesday, Sept. 11, until the 1 p.m. service.
Phyllis L. Christopher
Phyllis L. Whisler Christopher, 76, of Cheat Road, Morgantown, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.
Friends may call at Dering's Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Monday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, with the Rev. Barney Snowden officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
