Hugh Dowden Bailey Jr., 71, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001.
He was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Rockport, Ky., son of the late Hugh Bailey Sr. and Elsie Carter Bailey.
He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University, the War College, and received a master's from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During 25 years of Air Force service, he was stationed at Cheyenne Mountain, Hawaii, Newfoundland, and other locations worldwide before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. After retiring, he was assistant director of computing services at West Virginia University until 1990. He was an avid stamp and coin collector, American military historian and ardent sports fan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Whitworth Bailey, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters and spouses, Jennifer and Garth Ritchie, of Liberty, Mo. and Renee Bailey Hiser and Dennis Hiser, of Colorado Springs; and three grandsons, Zachery, Travis, and Jackson Ritchie, all of Liberty.

Eugene Richard Martin
Eugene Richard "Dick" Martin, 88, of Clarksburg, died Sept. 16, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was born July 4, 1913, in Farmington, son of the late George W. Martin and Florence Belle Fetty Martin Satterfield.
He retired in 1975 from Hope Natural Gas Co., where he had worked as a shop foreman. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army as a mechanic and driver in England and France. He was an avid CB radio enthusiast known as "Hubcap."
He is survived by two sons and a spouse, Daniel Lee and Lynda Martin, of Morgantown, and Eugene Richard "Dick" Martin II, of Clarksburg; two grandchildren, Christina Marie Martin, and Lora Elizabeth Martin, both of Morgantown; two brother-in-laws, Donald Daniel, and Eddie Daniel, both of Mannington; and three sister-in-laws, Sarah Daniel, Kathy Daniel, and Jeanne Daniel.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Lee Daniel Martin, in January 1997; three brothers, John Martin, Thomas Martin, and Max R. Martin; three sisters, Ruth Martin Pigott, Bernice Martin Hayhurst, and Georgia Martin Hamilton; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Daniel.
Graveside service will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, with the Rev. Richard Wilson officiating. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Eva Jo Brooks Fancher
Eva Jo Brooks Fancher, 67, of Blanchard, Okla., formerly of Farmington, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at home.
She was born Aug. 9, 1934, in Farmington, daughter of the late Less and Nettie Brooks.
She graduated from Farmington High School and was an active band member. She owned a dog kennel and raised German shepherds in South Farmington.
She is survived by two brothers, Don Brooks, of Fairmont, and Jack Brooks, of Hardy, Ark.; a sister, Harietta "Sis" Slamen, of Houston, Texas; a son, John Fancher, of Chickasa, Okla.; two daughters, Leigh Ann Fancher, of Fairmont, and Kelly Efaw, of Mannington; five grandchildren, Richard L. Fancher, of Fairmont, Damon Sturgeon, of Mannington, and Charlie, Nancy and Scott Meyers, all of Farmington; and a great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Dawn Sturgeon, of Mannington.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Grant Brooks, of Macon, Ga.
At her request, her body was cremated. There will be no memorial service.
Sylvia E. Sanderson
Word has been received of the death of Sylvia Edwards Sanderson, 69, of Fairfield, on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 7, 1932, in Morgantown, daughter of the late John W. and Grace Virginia Hall Edwards.
She was a beauty consultant for Avon Cosmetics. She was a member of the Rising Zion Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Club.
She is survived by her son, Medford Allen, of Staunton; stepsons, Calvin L. Sanderson, of Staunton, Charles T. Sanderson Jr., of Columbia, S.C. and Vada L. Sanderson, of Buena Vista; two grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Thomas Sanderson Sr., on Aug. 6, 2001.
Service was at the Rising Zion Baptist Church on Wednesday, Sept. 5, with the Rev. Mary Morgan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Donations: Rising Zion Baptist Church. Dering's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Alma Lorene Starkey Lee
Alma Lorene Starkey Lee, 88, of Mannington, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born Feb. 17, 1913, in Sugar Creek, Braxton County, daughter of the late Samuel M. Boyce and Eliza Samantha Barnette Boyce.
In her early years she worked for Morgan Shirt Factory in Morgantown, and in her later years, at First Ward School, the school she attended as a child, for 10 years. She was Apostolic.
She is survived by three children and spouses, Patricia A. and Kenneth L. Parrish, of Burton, Charles B. and Rose Lee, of Grafton, and Sharon D. and William Thomas, of Fairmont; a son-in-law, William King; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Lee; three brothers and spouses, Dwight Starkey, of Morgantown, Virgil and Wilma Starkey, of Fairmont, and Nolan and Dolores Starkey, of Morgantown; a sister-in-law, Virginia Starkey, of Morgantown; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burdell E. Lee; two daughters, Linda Jean in infancy, and Dixie R. King; a son, George H. Lee; a granddaughter, Joy Durinne King; a brother, O. Vance Starkey; a sister, Ruby M. Davis; a sister-in-law, Lucilla Starkey; and a brother-in-law, Leslie Davis.

Clyde Irwin Pierce
Clyde Irwin Pierce, 80, of Morris Avenue, Westover, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.
He was born Aug. 20, 1921, in DuBois, Pa., son of the late Clyde F. and Mary Zimmerman Pierce.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a physicist for the Bureau of Mines, now Morgantown Energy Research. He was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church. He was an historian of the Civil War and World War II and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Holt Pierce; two daughters and spouses, Judith and Tom Sterner, of Frederick, New Brunswick, Canada, and Cheryl and Roy Pride, of Morgantown; three brothers, Andrew Pierce and Herlihy Pierce, both of Erie, Pa., and Scott Pierce, of Beaver Falls, Pa.; a sister, Jane Taylor, of Falls Creek, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Clyde I. Pierce Jr.; a brother, Louis Pierce; a sister, Sue Ella Johnson; and three grandchildren.

Opal L. Keirns, 69, of Point Marion, Pa., died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in the Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa.
She was born April 18, 1932, in Hockin County, Ohio, daughter of the late Lawrence and Etta Vandergrift Hart.
She was a member of St. Hubert's R.C. Church and of the FOE 1932 Ladies Auxiliary, both in Point Marion.
She is survived by her son, Shawn Keirns, of Point Marion; three daughters, Mrs. Richard "Bobbie Sue" Riggleman, of Maidsville, Mrs. Terry "Diane" Swihart, of Morgantown, and Sheila Hunchuck, of Point Marion; three grandchildren and spouses, William and Janet Keirns, Terry Ray and Tailene Swihart, and Dimea Hunchuck; a great-grandchild, Tory Swihart; and four sisters, Zelma Truex, Faye Wolfe, Elsie Chafin and Florence Houston, all of Logan, Ohio.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Keirns, on March 12, 2000.

Joetta Sue Tustin, 51, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of the Wadestown area, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in the Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, S.C.
She was born Jan. 23, 1950, in Pine Grove, daughter of Keith and Johanna Hayes Tustin, Wadestown.
She was an office manager for the Digital Resources Co., of Conway, S.C. She was a member of the Surfside Church of Christ, in Surfside, S.C. She was a 1968 graduate of Clay-Battelle High School, and she attended West Virginia University.
She is also survived by a close personal friend, Sharon Webb, of Myrtle Beach; two brothers and a spouse, Kevin Tustin, of Wadestown, and Douglas and Mary Tustin, of Greencastle, Pa.; three nephews, Josh, Benji and Richard Tustin; and three nieces, Kristina Royer, Jessica Tustin and Jennifer Tustin.

Gene Virgil DuPont
Gene Virgil DuPont, 86, of Bretz, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 11, 1915, in Hartford, Ark., son of the late Dominic and Julia Nena DuPont. He retired from Arkwright Coal Co., a division of Consolidation Coal Co., where he was an equipment operator. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He formerly belonged to bowling leagues in Kingwood and Reedsville. He was a member of UMW Local 1289 in Morgantown and the St. Zita Catholic Church in Masontown.
He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Linda and Michael Richardson Miller, of Chester, Va., and Veronica "Roni" and Terry Rojahn, of Corapolis, Pa.; a brother, Louis DuPont, of Bretz; five grandchildren and spouses, Stacy and Matt Borror, of Kingwood, Mike and Jackie Richardson, of Charlotte, N.C., Joe and Amy Richardson, of Elizabeth City, N.C., Angelia Rojahn, and Thomas Rojahn, both of Coraopolis, Pa.; six great-grandchildren, Martin Borror, Zachery Richardson, Jacob Borror, Josh Richardson, Dominic Richardson and Jennifer Richardson.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Elizabeth DuPont, on Aug. 6, 1995; three brothers, John DuPont, Joe DuPont and Milio DuPont; and two sisters, Mary Dalzot and Kathryn Canich.

Tressie A. Page, 96, of National Church Road, Morgantown, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at home.
She was born March 6, 1905, in Selbyville, daughter of the late John and Cora Hereve Shingleton.
She retired from WVU Housekeeping Department after 22 years of service. She was Pentecostal.
She is survived by a son, Billy Page, of National; four daughters, Betty Balasko, of Harmony Grove, Jeanette Gazsi, of Star City, Jean Kennedy, of Williamstown, and Maxine Vangilder, of Cleveland; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy Page Sr., in 1979; four sons, Guy Page Jr., Kenneth Page, Eugene Page and Richard Page; a daughter, Helen Page; a grandson, Paul Gazsi; four brothers and four sisters.

Albert L. Schiffbauer
Albert L. Schiffbauer, 77, of National Church Hollow, Morgantown, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 25, 1924, in Morgantown, son of the late Albert Lawrence and Nellie Brown Schiffbauer.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on a Coast Wise Tanker in the South Atlantic and transporting troops home from Germany for the Merchant Marines during World War II. He retired from the Monongahela Railroad after serving as an engineer for 38 years. He attended Morgantown First Church of the Nazarene and was a member of Suncrest United Methodist Church, Drummond Chapel Campus. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and United Transportation Union Local 1006.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Maymie Isenhart Schiffbauer; a daughter and spouse, Cheryl and Rick Rudash, of Morgantown; a son and spouse, Earl and Karen Schiffbauer, of Morgantown; two granddaughters, Stephanie Rudash and Elisabeth Schiffbauer.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elvira Dunham; and a brother, Willis Schiffbauer.

Roy Alfred Dunn, 92, of Fairchance Road, Morgantown, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Sundale Nursing Home.
He was born Sept. 12, 1909, in Morgantown, son of the late Ira K. and Emma A. Wolfe Dunn. He was the last surviving member of his family.
He was the owner of Roy A. Dunn Trucking and retired in 1993. He was Methodist.
He is survived by two sons and spouses, Richard and Mary Ida Dunn and Robert and Jean Dunn, all of Morgantown; six grandchildren and spouses, Pamela and Bill Howdershelt, Paula Helmick, Connie and Harvey Coffman, Phyllis and Jimmy Boone, Mike and Cindy Dunn, Roxanne Park, all of Morgantown; 15 great-grandchildren, Brandon and Amber Howdershelt, Karen Helmick, Jason Christopher, Michelle, Stacy and Samantha Coffman, Jennifer, Ashley, and David Boone, Billy, Christopher, J.R. and Brookanne DeBerry, and Steven Dunn, all of Morgantown; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Marion County, daughter of the late Edward and Mary Alice Strope Bland.
She was a member of Bingamon Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo and making ceramics. She also enjoyed collecting cookbooks and salt and pepper shakers.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Stackpole, of Worthington; a son and spouse, Ralph Edward and Nancy Suter Sr., of Worthington; six grandchildren and spouses, Donnie and Connie Stackpole, of Worthington, Lisa King, of Worthington, Sue and John Anderson, of Shinnston, Debbie and Sam Humble, of Rose Hill, Kan., Ralph and Linda Suter Jr., of Lawrence, Kan., and Vickie and Randy Cavender, of Rose Hill, Kan.; eight great-grandchildren, Dana and Steven Anderson, Joshua and Andrew King, Chris Suter, Amber, Zack and Caleb Suter; a brother, Francis "Frankie" Bland, of Wana; and a sister, Mary Toothman, of Worthington.

Lenora 'Lee' Adams
Lenora A. "Lee" Adams, 79, of Morgantown, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center.
She was born March 31, 1922, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Paul and Mary Grace DiAndrea Chico.
She retired from Morgan Shirt Co. after 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by a son and spouse, Steve Allen and Janet Lane McGinnis Adams, of Newburg; a sister, Philomena Grace Moore, of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Jessica Lane Adams, Stephen Howard Adams, Gina Marie Adams and Joshua Allen Adams.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Steve A. Adams; a sister, Armenia Turner; and three brothers, Lewis Paul Chico, Joseph Paul Chico and Carl Anthony Chico.

Roger Lee Johnson, 36, of Wadestown, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa., following a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 19, 1964, in Waynesburg, Pa., son of Junie Pierce Johnson, of Deep Valley, Pa., and the late Russell Johnson.
He was a welder for the last eight years for Omega Transworld Ltd. of Garards Fort, Pa. He was a 1983 graduate of West Greene High School and was an E-4 with the National Guard from 1981-1987 in Waynesburg, Pa. He was a member of West Warren Baptist Church of Wadestown.
He is also survived by his wife, Wanda Wright Johnson; a stepson, David Eakin, of Hundred; a stepdaughter and spouse, Kelly and Jeff Dittman, of Wadestown; five brothers, Ralph Johnson, George Johnson, and John Raymond, all of Deep Valley, Pa., Glenn Johnson, of Moundsville, and Charles Johnson, of Nettle Hill; four sisters, Darlene Prendergast, of Hundred, Beryl Gene Miller, of Graysville, Pa., Charlene Bruckner, of New Freeport, Pa., and Betty Gump, of Deep Valley, Pa.; and three stepgrandchildren, Arica, September and Ashley Eakin.

Donald Presley Bond, 84, of Snake Hill Road, Morgantown, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at home.
He was born April 29, 1917, in Preston County, son of the late John and Elizabeth Blaney Bond.
He was Protestant. He was employed by Arkwright Coal Co. for more than 35 years as a coal miner. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America.
He is survived by four sons, Donald P. Bond Jr., of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles F. Bond and James LeRoy Bond, both of Gaithersburg, Md., and Robert A. Bond, of Rockville, Md.; three daughters, Shirley A. Trimble and Dorothy E. Bittner, both of Rockville, and Donna D. Napolie, of Frederick, Md.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Larry Walters.

Mary Brand Berry Utt, 81, formerly of W.Va. 73, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Mon Pointe Continuing Care Center.
She was born June 22, 1920, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Ross and Estelle Jones Brand.
She was a member of Johnson's Chapel United Methodist Church. She baby-sat for many area families for more than 30 years.
She is survived by two sons and spouses, James and Diane Berry, of Fairview, and Ed and Diane Berry, of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Dana Berry, of Morgantown, John Berry, of Fairview, Kristi Powroznick, of Morgantown, and Kelli LaNeve, of Morgantown; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley D. Berry; and her second husband, William A. Utt.

Oshel "O.P." Westfall, 99, of 1040 Georgia Ave., Keyser, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Morgan Manor, Westernport, Md.
He was born on July 6, 1902, in Spencer, son of the late Walker A. and Olive J. Garrett Westfall.
He was a retired agriculturist. He graduated from WVU in 1927 with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He taught vocational agriculture and science in West Virginia high schools, having started vo-ag departments in Shady Springs and Trap Hill high schools in Raleigh County. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as district supervisor for 10 years, and served as district supervisor and district manager for 10 years with Potomac Valley Soil conservation district and retired in 1982. Immediately after World War II he also owned and operated a family oriented business in Morgantown for 12 years.
He was a former resident of Morgantown, where he served two terms on City Council. He was a member of Wesley Methodist Church, but after moving to Mineral County he attended First United Methodist Church. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and Aplha Zeta fraternities, WVU Ag Club, WVU Emeritus Club, WVU Athletic Association, WVU Alumni Association, Keyser Lions Club and Loyal Order of Moose 662. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by a daughter and spouse, Barbara A. and Granville "Geep" Halterman Sr., of Oakland, Md.; three grandchildren, Granville "Rocky" Halterman Jr.. Karen Sue Skeweris, and Douglas "Doug" E. Halterman; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, all of Oakland.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Shipman Westfall.

Louise F. Chidester
Louise Fleming Chidester, 87, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at Wallace B. Murphy Nursing Care Facility, of Grafton.
She was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Grafton, daughter of the late Henry Foster Church and Olivia Fleming Church.
She graduated from Grafton High School in 1932 and attended Elliott Business College, in Wheeling. In later years she was a practical nurse. She was also a member of the Church of the Covenant, Presbyterian, of Grafton.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Kaye King, of Burnsville; a nephew, Hugh Romine, of Port Crane, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Barnett, of Bridgeport.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donovan V. "Don" Chidester, who died on Feb. 16, 1988.

Lessie M. Haines
Lessie M. Haines, 97, of Waynesburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.
She was born Sept. 22, 1903, near Morgantown, daughter of the late Melville Hosea and Auda Mae Neely Brand.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesburg. She was a former member of Asbury Chapel Church in Mount Morris, Pa., where she taught Sunday school for 12 years. She enjoyed making crafts and was a member of the Knit and Stitch Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Leanna Garrison, of Morgantown, and Laura Lemley, of Mount Morris; three sons, Russell Haines, of Mount Morris, Willis Haines, of Chardon, Ohio, and Paul Haines, of Beaver Creek, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Ridgeway, of Morgantown.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William T. Haines, whom she married Oct. 3, 1923, on Dec. 7, 1974; five brothers, Sanford Brand, Walter Brand, Paul Brand, Wilbert Brand and Virgil Brand; and two sisters, Thelma Gabler and Goldie Hartley.

Angie O. Stone
Angie O. Stone, 87, of Austin Way, Morgantown, formerly of Over Cheat, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at MonPointe Continuing Care Center.
She was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Clarksburg, daughter of the late Clarence and Merle Wright Paugh.
She was a member of Zoar House of Prayer. She formerly worked at the Morgan Shirt Factory and was the custodian at Rock Forge Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by four sons and spouses, Willis and Jacqueline Stone, and John and Ruth Stone, all of Morgantown, Clarence and Betty Stone, of Hunker, Pa., and Roy and Yvonne Stone, of Morgantown; two daughters and spouses, Karen and Tim Bowers, of Morgantown, and Sigrid and John Williams, of Midlothian, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and caregivers, Mary Tasker, Darlene Mullenax, Joyce White and Lisa Corley.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willis Stone Sr.; a brother, Hazel Paugh; and four sisters, Esta Bolyard, Beatrice Reynolds, Maude Miller and Ollie Carpenter.

Martha F. Garland
Martha F. Garland, 91, formerly of Lineboro, Md., died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
She was born June 4, 1910, in Clarksburg, daughter of the late Evaristo and Madaline Fernandez Artime.
She had been an inspector for the HazelatlasGlass Co. She was a longtime member of Manchester Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy Lynn Gannon, of Port St. Lucie; a son, Kenneth Garland, of Morgantown; two grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn DiStephano and John David Lynn; and a great-grandson, John D. Lynn II.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Garland, who died in 1994.
