Harold J. 'Bud' Ervin
Harold J. "Bud" Ervin, 77, of Kingwood, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in Morgantown.
He was born March 11, 1924, on the site of what is now Deep Creek Lake, Md., son of the late George R. and Virgie McCrobie Ervin.
He was a World War II veteran who served in North Africa and Italy with the 473rd Infantry/5th Army. Among his decorations were a Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star.
He was a coal miner before going to Baltimore, where he worked as an assembler for 30 years in the Baltimore assembly plant of General Motors. He was a member of the United Auto Workers union in Baltimore. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and an 11th generation American.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen Helmick Ervin; four sons and a spouse, Buddy Ervin, of Kingwood, Rodney Ervin, and Randy and Vickey Ervin, all of Baltimore, and Daniel Ervin, of Arthurdale; a daughter, Rose Marie Ortez, of Ashtabula, Ohio; two stepsons and spouses, William and Donna Ingram, of Waskom, Texas, and David and Jean Ingram, of Baltimore; a sister, Wanda Strahin, of Independence; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Ervin; a brother, Bruce Ervin; and three sisters, Bernice Grice, Lena Taylor and Shirley Liston.
Friends may call at Browning Funeral Home, Kingwood, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, with Jehovah's Witnesses officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Douglas A. Scotchel
Douglas Anthony Scotchel, 48, of Lane Street, Westover, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at home.
He was born Nov. 11, 1952, in Morgantown, son of Fred L. and GloriaPalmer Scotchel, of Westover.
He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1979, and attended West Virginia University.
He was self-employed in the restaurant and bar industry for many years, and for the past several years was a manager at Frank's Place in Westover. He was Methodist.
He is also survived by a daughter, Gloria Jean Scotchel, of Rivesville; a son, Douglas A. Scotchel Jr., of Morgantown; a sister, Denise Scotchel, of Westover; a brother, David Scotchel, of Westover; a half brother, Fred Scotchel Jr., of Nashville, Tenn.; two nieces, Scarlett Ann Scotchel, of Westover, and Sherea Scotchel, of North Carolina; and two great nieces, Holly and Brianna Scotchel, of North Carolina.
A private family memorial service will be Thursday, Oct. 4, at McCulla Funeral Home, with the Rev. James "Rat" Saunders officiating.
A memorial dinner in celebration of Scotchel's life will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 at Frank's Place in Westover.

Julia Lewis
Julia Lewis, 95, of Morgantown, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 24, 1905, in Upshur County, daughter of the late Todd and Alice Smallridge Burr.
She is survived by a son, Donald B. Lewis, of Ravenswood; three stepdaughters, Ruby Lewis, Willa Wayts and Marie Sharpolisky, all of Buckhannon; a brother, Russell Burr, of Warren, Ohio; a sister, Eunice Aldstock, of Canton, Ohio; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Amos Aldstock, in 1927; her second husband, Goff Lewis, in 1971; a son, Robert Aldstock; a daughter, Catherine Cuppett; two brothers, Blair and Ross Burr; and four sisters, Celia Harris, Ruth Aldstock, Mary Crites and Retta Loudin.
Cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in Laurel Fork Cemetery, Buckhannnon, with her grandson, Ronald Lewis, officiating.
Lawrence Z. Dumire Sr.
Lawrence Z. Dumire Sr., 78, of Marshallville, Ohio, formerly of Morgantown, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at home.
He was born Oct. 13, 1922, in St. George, son of the late Earl K. and Della P. Adams Dumire.
He attended Sugar Grove Presbyterian Church in Morgantown, and also attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Marshallville. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated the Dell Hill Dairy Farm, just outside of Morgantown near Dellslow for 41 years. In 1958, the Dumires were proclaimed the champion farm family in Monongalia County's Farming for Better Living Program. He was a member of the Monongalia Farm Bureau for 20 years and served on the board of directors of Southern States Cooperative, and Agriculture Stability Committee. He had been a resident of Marshallville since 1994 and was a member of the Orrville Jelly City Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy M. Dumire; a daughter and spouse, Kathryn Sue and Jim Beck, of Orrville; two sons and spouses, Lawrence Z. "Larry" and Cindy Dumire Jr., of Norton, Ohio, and James E. and Nancy Dumire, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; a brother, Vincent Dumire, of Moundsville; a sister and spouse, Lahoma J. and William Robinson, of Seffner, Fla.; six grandchildren and a spouse, Karen Hensel, of Orrville, Denise and Andy Schlund, of Wooster, Ohio, Jeffrey Dumire, of Norton, Christopher Dumire, of Akron, Ohio, Erin Dumire and Holly Dumire, both of Elizabethtown; a stepgranddaughter, Mindy Rollins, of Akron; five great-grandchildren, Matthey Hensel, Meggan Hensel, Kelsey Johnston, Kyle Johnston and Patrick James Dumire; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Michael, Dylan and Natasha Rollins.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Lee Dumire; an infant daughter; and a granddaughter, Pamela Lynn.

Rose Z. Gurtis
Rose Zulkoski Gurtis, 92, of Poquoson, Va., formerly of Hillview Drive, Morgantown, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001.
She was born Aug. 8, 1909, in LaSolcin, Poland, daughter of the late Stanley and Mary Zulkoski.
Gurtis is a retired administrative officer from Farmers Home Administration with 35 years of service. She was on the Tri-Ag Credit Union board as secretary/treasurer when it was founded. When she was younger, she worked at WVU's Agriculture Department. She graduated from Morgantown Business College in 1926.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Star City, Catholic Daughters of America, Business and Professional Women's Club, Morgantown Women's Club and Friends of WVU Hospitals.
She is survived by a son and spouse, Richard and Nancy Gurtis, of Poquoson; a stepson and spouse, Joseph and Beverly Gurtis, of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Bruno, of Weirton; 11 grandchildren, Suzanne Green, Gigi Florin and Amanda Jo Gurtis, originally of Poquoson, and Mary Hice, Sarah Gurtis, Timothy Gurtis, Charles Gurtis, Ann Gurtis, Susan Kearby, Matthew Gurtis and Andrew Gurtis, all of Florida; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Gurtis; a daughter, Patricia A. Gurtis; and a brother, Michael Zulkoski.

Hazel Ark Jones
Hazel Ark Jones, 88, of Palm Bay, Fla., and formerly of Westover, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Mariners Nursing Home in Palm Bay.
She was born July 19, 1913, in Harding, daughter of the late George L. Stalnaker and Sarah Elizabeth Wilson Bennett.
While a resident of Westover, she was employed many years at the Hotel Morgan.
She is survived by two daughters, Norma Kirkendall Jaeger, of Palm Bay, and Linda Sue Denison, of Mystic, Conn.; two sisters, Margaret Trickett, of Morgantown, and Georgeann Caton, of West Augusta, Va.; two brothers, Ernest Stalnaker, of Roanoke, Va., and William Stalnaker, of Julian, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Betty Ann Rogers, of Vacaville, Calif.; five grandchildren, Don Kirkendall, of Oviedo, Fla., William S. Kirkendall Sr., of York, Pa., Kerry Kirkendall, of Fremont, Ohio, Roger Kirkendall, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and Russell Roberts, of Mystic; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Freida Price: two sisters, Lena and Lillian; and two grandchildren, David and Terry Kirkendall.

Edith Alideen Zorko
Edith Alideen Zorko, 77, of Main Street, Mannington, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born June 22, 1924, at Marion County, daughter of the late Clifford and Edna Yost Snyder.
She was a graduate of Farmington High School. She had worked for Champion Stores in Farmington and Rachel for 30 years. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary, VFW of Mannington. She was a supporter of the Soup Opera, Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
She is survived by her husband, Elick "Pappy" Zorko, to whom she was married for 15 years; two sisters, Rosetta Snyder Hennis, of Morgantown, and Deloris Snyder Fluharty, of Fairmont; two stepsons, Elick Zorko Jr., of Rachel, and Bob Zorko, of Metz; four stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law, Annie, Sophia and Clare, and Katie Monell, of Fairmont.

Linda Miller
Linda Miller, 23, formerly of Littleton, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va., of injuries suffered in an auto accident.

Richard D. Kitzmiller
Richard D. Kitzmiller, 73, of National, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Monongalia General Hospital.
He was born Feb. 9, 1928, in Bayard, son of the late Homer B. and Helen Norman Kitzmiller.
He was a retired operating engineer of Clarksburg Local IUOE 132, and was Protestant. He was also a member of the NRA, AARP and IUOE Local 132.
He is survived by a son, Fred Rodenish, of Michigan; three brothers and spouses, Tony and Joyce Kitzmiller, Mark and Jane Kitzmiller and Robert and Gloria Kitzmiller, all of Morgantown; two sisters and a spouse, Charalla R. Kitzmiller, Rosalie J. and William Moore, all of Morgantown; a brother-in-law, Robert Flowers, of Morgantown; two granddaughters, Angela Rodenish and Jackie Keysor; and three great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Rodenish, on Jan. 1, 1992; and a sister, Norma Flowers.

Jane Hunt Duncan
Jane Hunt Duncan, 67, of Abilene, Texas, formerly of Burton, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in an Abilene medical center.
She was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Burton, daughter of the late Garold and Freda Hamilton Hunt.
She was co-valedictorian of Hundred High School Class of 1951. She was a graduate of West Virginia University, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Delta Kappa Gamma, an education honorary. She moved from New Orleans to Abilene 24 years ago. She taught at St. John's School and Bonham Elementary, where she was honored in 1998 as "Teacher of the Year." She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene.
She is survived by her husband, Don R. Duncan; six sons and spouses, Jim and Michele Duncan, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Pete and Rachel Duncan, of Plano, Texas, Hank Duncan, of Abilene, John Duncan, of College Station, Texas, Bill and Julie Duncan, of Germantown, Tenn., and Andy Duncan, of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter and spouse, Suzanne and Bill Holloway, of Fort Worth; a brother and spouse, Glen L. and Betty Jo Hunt, of Siler City, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, George Richard Hunt.

Margarete Lemley Moore
Margarete V. Lemley Moore, 95, of Hundred, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Cameron Continuous Care Center, Cameron.
She was born May 25, 1906, in Burton, daughter of the late William and Sadie Poland Lemley.
She was a graduate of Fairmont Normal School, now Fairmont State College, and a member of the Hundred Homemakers Club. She was a member of the Hundred Church of Christ.
She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Elizabeth and Buck Taylor, of Moundsville, Sara and Don Fernie, of Peoria, Ariz., and Carol Cross, of Hundred; two adopted daughters, Janice Moore, of Yuma, Ariz., and Sonya Johnson, of New Freeport, Pa.; three stepdaughters, Betty Wells, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, Mary Hammel, of Yuma, Ariz., and Elaine Shaffer, of Crestview, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 20 stepgrandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rolley Moore Sr.; a son, Rolley Moore Jr.; a stepson, Jack Moore; two stepdaughters, Lela Lemley and Kathryn Mackenson; five brothers and three sisters.

Harry Edward Green
Harry Edward Green, 81, of Katy, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1920, in Lakewood, Ohio, son of the late William Lester Green and Angela Lenore Smith Green.
He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., in Cleveland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed bowling and received several trophies while bowling in leagues in the Cleveland area.
He is survived by a sister, Jane Elizabeth Green, of Katy; three cousins, Betty Showalter, of Rivesville, Terry DeMicco, of Rivesville, and Jack Smith, of Pittsburgh.

Nellie 'Granny' Tennant
Nellie "Granny" Tennant, 98, of St. Leo Road, Wadestown, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born April 11, 1903, in Wetzel County, daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Barr and Martha Roberts Barr.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Monumental (Monumental, W.Va.) United Methodist Church in Marion County. She was an avid quilter and bread maker.
She is survived by a son, Carl Clifford Tennant, of Fairmont; two daughters, Betty Shaver, of Wadestown, and Martha Vandergrift, of Zelienople, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Fluharty, of Fairmont; seven grandchildren, Connie Watson, of Wadestown, Larry Shaver, of Grand Junction, Colo., Jane Yonaley, of Sistersville, Mark Shaver, of Morgantown, Vickie Vandergrift, of Wekford, Pa., Sharon Smith, of Edmond, Okla., and Sue Lockwood, of Fairmont; 17 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Everett Tennant; four brothers; four sisters; two great-grandchildren; and two sons-in-law, Andy Vendergrift and Victor Shaver.

Nellie Lynch
Nellie Lynch, 92, of Fawn Meadows, Core, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Morgan Manor Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Oct. 21, 1909, in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late John and Ellen Law Benjamin.
Before moving to West Virginia, she lived and worked in Philadelphia as a nurse. She was a member of the Eastern Star, and also loved the theater and traveling.
She is survived by a son, John Lynch, of Fawn Meadows, Core; two sisters, Etta Mae Snyder and Mary Lee, both of California; and seven grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Flea" Lynch; and a daughter, Jean Johnson.
Cremation services were provided by McCulla Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held in Philadelphia at a later date.
