Naomi Guy Hand
Naomi Guy Hand, 89, of Elm Grove, Wheeling, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Forest Hill Retirement Community in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
She was born July 17, 1912, in Elm Grove, daughter of the late George E. Guy Sr. and Martha Abercrombie Guy.
She was a lifelong resident of Elm Grove and taught in Ohio County schools for 30 years. She served as a youth activities director for Oglebay Institute, and spent 27 years as a leader of the Laurel 4-H Club. She took leadership roles in the DAR, her teaching profession, and in the 4-H program at the local, state and national levels, including Monongalia County. She was a member of the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wheeling. She received her teaching degree at West Liberty State College and her master's in teaching from Pittsburgh University.
She is survived by two daughters and spouses, Holly and Leonard Bass, of Caro, Mich., and Peggy and Chuck Noffsinger, of Vienna; and three grandchildren, Sara Bass, and Abby and Ben Noffsinger.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edgar Hand; a sister, Virginia Irene Guy; and an infant brother, George E. Guy Jr.
Memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, 905 National Road, Wheeling, with the Rev. Dr. Larry Kline officiating. Christine "Missie" Cranford, 89, of Friendship Manor, formerly of Clark Street, Morgantown, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at home.
She was born Aug. 22, 1912, in Four States, Marion County, daughter of the late Elmer and Mary E. Keller Jenkins.
She was a homemaker and a longtime member of the Jones United Methodist Church.
She is survived by five daughters and spouses, Monongalia County House of Delegates member and former Morgantown Mayor, Charlene and Rogers Marshall, of Morgantown, June Holden, of Cleveland, Ohio, Sylvia and Roy Dawson, of Turnersville, N.J., Mary and Jesse Jackson, of Willingboro, N.J., and Edna Cranford, of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Juanita Cranford, and Evelyn Keys, both of Morgantown; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie Jennings; second husband, Ollie Cranford; a son, Clarence Thomas; a daughter, Sara Costello; a brother, Gilbert Jenkins; and two sisters, Maggie Lindsay and Rhoda Leek.

Francis Snyder
Francis Paul Snyder, 76, of Brookhaven Road, Morgantown, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at home.
He was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Kitzmiller, Md.
He was a former Morgantown city firefighter who retired at the rank of lieutenant in 1975. He served in World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He attended Chestnut Ridge Community Church and was a member of the International Association of Firefighters.
He is survived by two sons and spouses, Morgantown Police Cpl. Ron Snyder and Cheryl Snyder, of Morgantown, and Robert and Dr. Nancy Snyder, of Michigan; two grandchildren, Doug and Kelly Snyder; four sisters, Carol Paugh, Billie Howard, Joan Fazio and Ruth Roy; and a brother, Ray Kitzmiller.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Katheryn Snyder; and a daughter, Sandra Snyder.

Kathryn Lincoln Lavish, 80, of Gans (Crystal) Pa., died Nov. 30, 2001, in Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Guyaux, Springhill Township, Pa., daughter of the late Robert and Minnie Upward Lincoln.
She is survived by three daughters, Kay Trottier, of Stevenville, Mont., Shirley Lang, of Morgantown, and Wilma Stammler, of Lake Lynn, Pa.; a son, Michael Lavish, of Gans; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Betty Graznak, of Greensboro, Pa., Doris Kerns, of Morgantown, and Mary Gynn, of Appollo, Pa.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Lavish, on July 7, 1991; and five brothers, Robert, John, George, Jim, and Arthur.

Lavina Alice Robinson, 100, of Bridgeport, formerly of Kingwood, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in Bridgeport.
She was born Sept. 22, 1901, in Amersburg, daughter of the late John and Catherine Nice Burkett.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Valley Point Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by two sons, Donald Robinson, and Freddie Robinson, both of Winchester, Va.; six grandchildren, including Charlene Nutter, of Anmoore, whom she raised; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Violet Runner; five brothers; and three sisters.

John Francis Hall
John Francis Hall, 90, of Fairmont, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at home.
He was born Feb. 26, 1911, in New York City.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a longtime New York City businessman, retiring as a vice president of a major construction firm. He got back into business after moving to Fairmont in the 1970s, owning and operating Ajay's Coffee Shop downtown for a number of years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was active in the organization's fund-raising activities.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice Ilund Hall; two daughters and a spouse, Joy Patterson, and Joan and John Mentus, all of Fairmont; three grandchildren, John Mentus, Deborah Falconi and Gary Patterson; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service, Monday, Dec. 3, at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, with Chaplin Max Burkhead officiating. Donald L. Dusenberry
Donald L. Dusenberry, 74, of 232 North Porter St., Waynesburg, Pa., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg.
He was born Nov. 24, 1927 in Davistown, Pa., son of the late Erma Kennedy Dusenberry and Lee W. Dusenberry.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a 40-year member of Carpenters Union Local 2274. He was also a member of Waynesburg Eagle Club Aerie 598, Waynesburg Elks Lodge 757, James Farrell American Legion Post 330, of Waynesburg, Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 F. & A.M., and the Syria Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., of Pittsburgh.
He worked as a heavy construction foreman and carpenter for several construction companies, retiring from W.P. Dickerson Construction Co., of Youngwood, Pa.
He is survived by a son, Lonnie Lee Dusenberry, of Galt, Calif.; two grandchildren, Nicole Dusenberry Kreiser, and Travis A. Dusenberry; his stepmother, Elizabeth E. Dusenberry, of Dilliner, Pa.; and a brother, Ronald A. Dusenberry, of Taylortown, Pa.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Wilma M. Gallatin Dusenberry, whom he married Oct. 21, 1948, on Aug. 22, 2000.

John Fred Merrifield Sr.
John Fred Merrifield Sr., 82, of Bellview community, Fairmont, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born in Fairmont on May 11, 1919, son of the late Fred and Martha Jack Merrifield.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later worked as a brakeman for B&O Railroad, where he retired in 1980 with 43 years of service. He was a lifelong resident of Bellview, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by two sons and a spouse, Scott Merrifield, and John F. and Penny Merrifield,all of Fairmont; a brother and spouse, Thorton and Birdie Merrifield, doing missionary work in Africa; five grandchildren, Mandi Merrifield, of Flagstaff, Ariz., Brandi, Randy, Steven, and Michael Merrifield, all of Fairmont.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy VanPelt Merrifield, who died in February 1996; a son, John Fred Merrifield Jr, who died in infancy; and a brother, Robert Merrifield.

Nettie M. Tennant
Nettie M. Tennant, 87, of Mooresville, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Fitzwaters Private Care Home, Fairmont.
She was born July 7, 1914, in Mooresville, daughter of the late Simon and Mintie Varner Tennant.
She had owned and operated a grocery store in Mooresville for many years and was affiliated with the Mooresville Church of Christ. She served as a board member for the Clay-Battelle Clinic and was an avid bowler.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Fred Tennant, Ralph Tennant, Ray Tennant and Minor Tennant; and two sisters, Mae Jones and Thelma Tennant.

David Lee Swaim, 43, of Fairmont, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at home.
He was born July 24, 1958, in Fairmont, son of Doris Jean Satterfield, of Fairmont, and the late Richard Swaim.
He was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and was employed as a water operator for the City of Fairmont Filtration Plant.
He is survived by two brothers and spouses, Larry and Vikki Swaim, of Fairmont, and Mark and Cindy Swaim, of Winchester, Va.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Alen Swaim.

She was born June 15, 1921, in Gordonvale, Queensland, Australia, daughter of the late William Edward and Ivy McCoombe Luxton.
She was a member of the VFW Post 747 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by four children and spouses, Lorraine and Clark Spitznogle, of Point Marion, Pa., Wayne J. and Darlene Wozniak, of Kent, Ohio, Marshall and Lou Ann Morris, of Dilliner, Pa., and Kevin and Karen Morris, of Greensboro; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a great-grandson; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Martin Wozniak; her second husband, Marshall L. Morris; and three brothers.

She was a member of the Spraggs United Methodist Church and the Blacksville Senior Citizens. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Moore; a daughter, Marcia Gregan, of Waynesburg, Pa.; two sons, Barry Moore, of Spraggs, Pa., and Mark W. Moore, of Holbrook, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Jared, Megan and Chelsea Moore, and Kelly, Jamie and Lori Gregan; two sisters, Mary Berdine, of Waynesburg, and Clairadell Rogers, of Beaver, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Guy H. Ice Jr., 75, of Carolina, died Sunday, Dec. 2, in Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born July 7, 1926, in Idamay, son of the late Guy H. Sr. and Nettie Ice.
He was a retired coal miner from Bethlehem Steel Corp. He worked from 1947-1982 in the mines at Carolina, Four States, Idamay, and Barrackville, retiring as an outside electrician.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II.
He was Methodist. He graduated in 1944 from Farmington High School. He was a member of the VFW Post 629, of Fairmont. He served on the Carolina Community Improvement Association Board, and the Ice Cemetery Board of Directors, in Barrackville.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Irene Yuhas Ice, of Carolina, whom he married on Sept. 10, 1950; a daughter and spouse, Trudy and Terry Lemley, of Carolina; three sons and spouses, Guy Thomas and Kim Ice, Terry and Lori Ice, and Todd and Tamara Ice, all of Carolina; a sister, Wilda Kelly, of Shinnston; a sister-in-law, Clara Knicely, of Idamay; six grandchildren, Trini, Lori, and Terri Beth Lemley, Jay Ice, James Fisher, and Cody Ice, all of Carolina; three nieces, Belva Ann Brown, of Bridgeport, Renae Ashcraft, of Reading, Pa., and Tina Malcomb, of Idamay; and a nephew, Andy Dudash, of Shinnston.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Ice.

Mary E. Sanders, 86, of the Last Mile of the Way, Rowlesburg, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in Kingwood.
She was born Aug. 11, 1915, in Ruth Belle, daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Braumbaugh Donovan.
She was a member of Rowlesburg Southern Baptist Church, Rowlesburg Historical Society and a former member of the Erwin United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by four sons and spouses, Randall and Blanche Sanders, of Rowlesburg, Allan and Shirley Sanders, of Parma, Ohio, Gary and Linda Sanders, of Snead, Ala., and Robert Sanders, of Tunnelton; two daughters and spouse, Sandra and Jim Weaver, of Salem, and Mary Kay Dean, of Rowlesburg; a son-in-law, Tim Rossetti, of North Huntington, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Sanders, in 1993; a daughter, Cindy Rossetti; a brother; four sisters; a granddaughter; and a son-in-law, Randy Dean.

James O. McCauley, 71, of Route 3, Haymond Community, Grafton, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001.
He was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Galloway, son of the late Orval Waitman McCauley and Veta Blanch Swick McCauley.
He was a retired general foreman with CSX Railroad Co. in Grafton, with more than 46 years of service. He was a member of First Christian Church in Grafton, and was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 15 A.F. & A.M., Osiris Temple of Wheeling and the Tayl or County Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Lorettie Robinson McCauley; two sons and spouses, Michael L. and Jennifer McCauley, of Madison, and Roger L. and Cathleen McCauley, of Grafton; a daughter and spouse, Diane E. and Philip Born, of Proctorville, Ohio; six grandchildren, Carey Nestor, of Charlottesville, Va., Christopher McCauley, of Wilmington, N.C., Robbie Nestor, of Grafton, Matthew McCauley, of Grafton, Shannon McCauley, of Charlottesville, Va., and Stacy McCauley, of Grafton; and a sister, Norma Jean McVicker, of Philippi.

Winifred J. Watson Funk
Word has been received of the death of Winifred J. Watson Funk, 77, of Higginsville, Mo., who died Nov. 6, 2001, at the Research Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born May 17, 1924, in Masontown, daughter of the late Carl H. and Daisy M. Sidwell Watson.
She moved to Higginsville in 1998, and was formerly of Mountain Home, Ark., where she and her husband owned and operated Harry's Resort on Bull Shoals Lake for 17 years. She was a Naval Air Corps veteran of World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer worker for Foster Grandparent Program in Higginsville. She enjoyed fishing and sports.
She is survived by her husband, Harry W. Funk, whom she married on June 1, 1945; two sons and spouses, Pat and Sandy Funk, of Gainesville, Mo. and Charles and Amy Funk, of Batavia, Ohio; a daughter and spouse, Susie and Jerry Beard, of Higginsville; seve* grandchildren, Craig Funk, Joseph Bailey, Brandon Funk, Kelly Craig, Scott Beard, Jordan Funk, and Payton Funk; two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Kaitlin Craig; and a sister, Jean Watson Anderson, of Morgantown.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers; a sister; and a son, Harry.
Memorial service was held in Higginsville on Nov. 8. A military graveside service was held Friday, Nov. 9. Burial was in Baxter Memorial Gardens, Mountain Home, Ark.
Katheryn Davis Steele
Katheryn "Kitty" Davis Steele, 96, of St. Albans and formerly of Cheat Canyon Park, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, after a short illness.
She was born Dec. 8, 1904, in Oil City, Pa., and spent much of her life in Fairmont and Morgantown.
She lived in Florida for 37 years before returning to West Virginia in 1997 to be close to her daughter, Mrs. John T. Kay Jr., of Charleston. She loved to play bridge and was active in a bowling league in Florida. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Deland and attended St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Charleston.
She is survived by two children, Mrs. John T. "Kitty" Kay Jr., of Charleston, and George C. Steele, of Karagan, Kazakhstan; two brothers, James W. Davis, of Morgantown, and Bud R. Davis, of Portage, Ind.; a sister, Marie M. Schupfer, of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Kimberly M. Steele, of Pasadena, Calif., Lois L. Steele, of Hollywood, Calif., J. Robert Williamson, of Atlanta, J. Scott Williamson, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., Matthew S. Williamson, of Oak Hill, John L. Steele III, of Charlotte, N.C., Stacy Kay McKean, of Dry Fork, Craig M. Kay, of Charleston and John T. Word has been received of the death of Rita Heloise Hooton, 78, formerly of Frederick, Md., and Rowlesburg, on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 1, 1923, in Rowlesburg, daughter of the late John Lee and Esther Mary Bonney Hulstine.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick, the Frederick Stroke Club and Rainbow Belles. She was a former member and past president of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Rowlesburg and a former member of the Frederick Business and Professional Women's Club. She had been employed 33 years with Alpha Portland Cement Co. During World War II and the Korean War, she worked for the Selective Service Board.
She is survived by a son and spouse, Michael L. and Carolann Hooton, of Lewistown, Md. ; two daughters, Lelia A. Hooton and Mary Pamela Hooton, both of Frederick; two sisters and spouse, Patricia and William Horney, of Newark, Del., and Lelia Loffelman, of Martinsville, N.J.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Richard Hooton, on May 30, 1956.
Service was held in Frederick. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
Leonard Gordon Simms
Word has been received of the death of Sgt. 1st Class Leonard Gordon Simms, (Ret.) 82, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Reedsville, on Aug. 15, 2001.
He was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Reedsville, son of the late Noel (Major) and Pearl Trowbridge Simms.
He left West Virginia at the age of 24 to enter the military. He was formerly in the Civilian Conservation Corps and later served 30 years with the U.S. Army. He was a World War II and Vietnam War veteran. After retiring from the Army, he worked 13 years for Valley National Bank in Sierra Vista, Ariz. He loved to golf and use his computer.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; a daughter, Carollyn; step-grandchildren and spouses, Wendy and Rob, William and Danielle, and Woodford Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Sharron Kay and Chase, all of Arizona; a great aunt, Alice Simms, of Arthurdale; two brothers, Richard "Dick" and Jack Simms, both of Arthurdale; and three sisters, Violet Robison, of Morgantown, Virginia "Ginny" Wilson, of Frametown, and Delma Flint, of Monongah.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Elmo Trowbridge, Theodore "Ted" Simms, and Robert "Bob" Simms; a sister, Ruth Singleton; and a son-in-law, Woodford Remencus.
The body was cremated and inurned at Fort Huachuca Post Cemetery following a full military funeral.
