Philip 'Bunny' Brutto
Philip "Bunny" Brutto, 95, of Kingwood, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood. He was born July 20, 1906, in Grafton, a son of the late Carlos and Josephine Scalise Brutto. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II with the 178th Chemical Warfare Platoon attached to the 37th Division in the South Pacific, seeing combat in New Guinea, Bougainville and Philippines campaigns. He retired after 44 years of service as chief chemist at the Alpha Portland Cement Company in Lime Kiln, Md. Prior to that, he was a chemist at the Manheim plant. When the Preston County operation closed, he was transferred to the new modern plant at Lime Kiln. During the 20 years in Maryland, his wife, Naomi, taught school at Walkersville Elementary. His favorite sport teams were the Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Yankees. He was a coach for the junior high basketball team at Manheim School for three years, and was a former nationally approved basketball and football official. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9578 in Kingwood; the Kingwood Lions Club; Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department; and a life member of the Elks Lodge 0684, Frederick, Md., and the Rowlesburg VFW Post 3008. He was a member of the St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Kingwood, where he served as an usher for several years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Naomi Brutto; two brothers, Mickey Brutto, of Naples, Fla., and Anthony Brutto, of Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve Brutto and Richard Brutto; three sisters, Teresa Nesci, Josephine Manzola, and Mildred Mankins; and an infant sibling. Friends may call at James G. Lobb Funeral Home in Kingwood from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the St. Sebastian Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, with Father Vincent Segotta and the Rev. John Negley officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Kingwood. A prayer vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

James Lee Hershman
James Lee Hershman, 79, of Rivesville, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Barbour County, son of the late Cletus and Grace White Hershman. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ida Flori Hershman. He was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church of Fairmont. He was retired from Consolidation Coal Company with 30 years of service, where he worked in the Rivesville and Williams Mines for most of his career, and retired from the Blacksville Coal Mine, where he was known as "Cherry Leg." He served with the U.S. Navy Air Corps for three years during World War II, where he was stationed in the Philippines and served in the Pacific. He was a member of the UMWA District 31 and the Rivesville Volunteer Fire Department. He was previously active at Camp Beverly in the 1930s, where he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was also active with the Senior Citizens Travel Club of Fairmont, which travels all over the United States; he was known as "Archie Bunker" during his travels. He enjoyed telling jokes and just talking with folks. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons and spouses, James and Valerie Hershman, and Timothy and Yvonne Hershman, all of Rivesville; a sister, Joan Driscoll, of Muncie, Ind.; and grandchildren, Jim, Heather, Melissa, Joshua and Justin Hershman; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harry David and Dale Hershman. Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, Jasper Street, Rivesville, is in charge of funeral arrangements. At the request of the deceased, Mr. Hershman was cremated. A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Lady of the Assumption Church in Greentown. Father Gonda Babulu will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover. The Monongalia Veterans will observe military services at graveside.

Katherine Anita Buxton
Katherine Anita Buxton, 93, of Van Voorhis Road, Morgantown, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Sundale Rest Home. She was born Nov. 26, 1908, in Atlasburg, Pa., a daughter of the late Angelo and Raphella Romeo. She was a longtime member of the Church of the Brethren in Morgantown, where she was very active in all church functions. She was a loving mother and homemaker. She delivered Meals on Wheels from the time it started until she was 84 years old. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Mary K. and James (Whitey) DeMoss, of Morgantown; two sons and spouses, Glenn W. Jr. and Christine Buxton, of Southhaven, Miss., and James W. and Linda Buxton, of Bel Air, Md.; a sister, Sue Floria, of Burgettstown, Pa.; two grandsons and spouses, Glenn W. Buxton III and Rita Buxton, and Robert E. and Charlene DeMoss; three great-grandchildren, Michael J. and spouse, Heather DeMoss, Kimberly Brooke Buxton, and Glenn W. Buxton IV; and a great-great-granddaughter, Peyton Shea DeMoss. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn W. Buxton Sr., on Aug. 24, 1981; and several brothers and sisters. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and at the Church of the Brethren on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, where the body will lie in state from noon until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Thelma G. Lowther
Thelma G. Lowther, 81, of Napier, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at home after a long illness. She was born July 23, 1920, at Replete, a daughter of the late Luther Wimer and Rebecca Cogar Wimer Brown. She was an adult family care provider, a member of the Lewis County Senior Citizens, and a member of Walkersville Mission Independent Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Lowther, in 1981; three sons, Terry Lowther, Homer Jerry Lowther, and Teddy Earl Lowther; five sisters; and four brothers. She is survived by three daughters and spouses, Betty and Earl Cayton, of Napier, Jane and Bob Sprouse, of Burnsville, and Mary and John Conley, of Aurora; two sons and spouses, Gerald and Dorie Lowther, of Horner, and Ronnie and Betty Lowther, of Sutton; a sister, Madge Kincaid, of Walkersville; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the Walkersville Mission Independent Church, Walkersville. Burial will be in the Green Hill Cemetery, Ireland, and friends may call from 5-9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Charles R. Cutlip
Charles R. Cutlip, 75, of Pursglove, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his residence. He was born Jan. 4, 1928, in Morgantown, son of the late Harry Cutlip and Rose Alberta Harvey Cutlip Varbanoff. He retired from the Southern Ohio Coal Co., and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was Methodist and greatly enjoyed music. He is survived by his wife, Anna Fulmer Cutlip, having celebrated 49 years of marriage Dec. 29, 2001; two brothers, Joe Varbanoff, of Morgantown, and Robert Ancel, of Terra Alta; and a sister, Mary Keener, of Cassville. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Mayhew. Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Prentice E. Teets
Prentice E. "Pete" Teets, 86, of Aurora, formerly of Terra Alta, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the home of his daughter, Linda Lantz. He was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Lakeford, a son of the late Ross and Fannie G. May Teets. He was a member of the Terra Alta Wesleyan Church and served on the local Board of Administration for the church. He was a retired hardware clerk for Naylor's Hardware, formerly Farmers Supply of Kingwood. He is survived by two sons, David Allen Teets, of Baltimore, and Roger Lyle Teets, of Beckley; a daughter, Linda Ruth Teets Lantz, of Aurora; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Velma M. Teets; his stepmother, Maude Teets; two sons, Ronald P. Teets and Clifford Teets; and a brother, Kenneth Teets. Friends may call at the Browning Funeral Home in Kingwood, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Helen M. "Pugde" Velez, 72, of Pentress, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at her residence after a short illness. She was born June 30, 1929, in Washington, Pa., daughter of the late Harry and Helen Crile Chase. She is survived by her spouse of 40 years, Tomas M. Velez; four sons, Leroy Lange, of Belle Vernon, Pa., Jimmy Lange, of Blythewood, S.C., Joe Lange, of Atlanta, and Michael Raulerson, of Belle, Iowa; seven daughters, Winnifred Lange, of New York City, Kathy Raulerson, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Deloris Erhart, of Cattaragus, N.Y., Teresa Honis, of Elyria, Ohio, Marian Velez, of Lorain, Ohio, Sandra Plaza and Ada Velez, with whom she made her home, both of Pentress; brothers, George Chase, of Amity, Pa., Charles Chase, of Avella, Pa., Harry Chase Jr., of Tacoma, Wash., Floyd Chase, of Washington, Robert Chase, of Indiana, Arthur Chase, of Jacksonville, N.C., John Chase, Wayne Chase, Jack Chase, Cecil Chase, Fred Chase and Paul Chase, all of southern Ohio; sisters, Jessie Dobish, of Lemont Furnace, Pa., Florence Norris, of Farmington, Ark., Ruth Kirby, Pat Corut and Rose Blackburn, all of southern Ohio; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Charles Junior Gibson
Charles Junior Gibson, 33, of Darst Street, Morgantown, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at his residence. He was born April 9, 1968, in Morgantown, the son of Charles Gibson and Shirley McBee Gibson, both of Morgantown. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Charles Junior Leighty of Morgantown; two stepchildren, Chelsie and Nick Musick, of Morgantown; his maternal grandmother, Lottie Mae Hixenbaugh, of Morgantown; his paternal grandmother, Lettie Mae Gibson, of Morgantown; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Virginia Theresa Jackson
Virginia Theresa Jackson, 87, of Elizabeth, Pa., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in SHHS-Jefferson Hospital. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sept. 11, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Matilda Matthews Williamson and was the wife of the late Basil Jackson. She was a member and former organist at St. Isaac Joques Catholic Church, Elrama, Pa., and was a retired legal secretary for Attorney Glenn Jones. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Mildred Marie Bright, of Morgantown; caregivers, her nieces, Kathleen Stoyanoff, of Whitehall, and Cindy Rogers, of Mechanicsburg; nephews, Daniel H. Williamson, of Whitehall, and J.C. Natale, of Elizabeth; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by a son, Donal Rothey; and a brother, Raymond Williamson. There is no visitation. Funeral service will be held at the Holy Angels Church, Hays, Pa., at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, with the Rev. David Crowley officiating. Interment will be private. Hattie S. Perry Shaffer
Hattie S. Perry Shaffer, 91, of Spencer Avenue, Morgantown, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born on Feb. 5, 1910, in Ten Mile, daughter of the late Granville and Matilda Sharps Perry. She worked in a shirt factory while living in Buckhannon and moved to Morgantown in the 1950s, taking a job with Joseph's Upholstery. She also worked for Sam Barill's Drapery and Upholstery Shop and continued to make draperies from her home for many people. She is survived by one son, Marvin L. Shaffer of Morgantown; two granddaughters and spouses, Sandra Shaffer Cripple and Jay Cripple of Mandeville, La., and Shani Shaffer Utter and Ernie Utter of Grafton; three great-granddaughters, Megan Cripple, Samantha Utter and Alison Utter; one sister, Lillie Perry Kelly of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur L. Shaffer; five brothers, Lewis Perry, Dave Perry, Chub Perry, Henry Perry, and Floyd Perry; and two sisters, Anna Perry and Minerva May Perry. Willard Paul "Wid" Teets, 83, of Terra Alta, Cranesville community, died Jan. 18, 2002, at home. He was born Aug. 18, 1918, at Lake Ford, Md., son of the late Percy and Lulu Hayes Teets. Wright Funeral Home, Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, from 4-8 p.m., and Monday, Jan. 21, at Lake Ford United Methodist Church, Lake Ford, Md., from noon until 1 p.m. time of service, with the Rev. Josephine Cassella
Josephine Viglianco Cassella, 80, of Fairmont Road, Westover, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at her home. She was born Feb. 20, 1921, in Farmington, a daughter of the late Thomas and Dominica Viglianco. She was a former clerk for the Monongalia County Assessors Office and Tax Department, and a member of the St. Theresa/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. She is survived by one son, Thomas Anthony Cassella, of Westover; three brothers, Andy F. Viglianco, of Fairmont, Carl M. Viglianco, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Thomas Viglianco Jr., of Indiatlantic, Fla.; and a special friend, Sandy Hixenbaugh, of Cassville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Cassella, in June 2000; and her stepmother, Mary A. Viglianco. Goldie Grace Chidester
Goldie Grace Chidester, 93, of Bruceton Mills, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in her home. Friends may call at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home, Brandonville, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, until the 11 a.m. funeral service, with the Revs. Philip Geoghan and Dennis Dawson officiating. Zachary Michael Fisher
Zachary Michael Fisher, infant son of Larry Fisher Jr. and Bethany Wolfe, both of Bruceton Mills, died shortly after birth Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Larry A. and Debra L. Fisher Sr. of Markleysburg, Pa.; maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Edwin Wolfe and Cindy Wolfe, and maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Deborah Fike and Douglas Fike, all of Bruceton Mills; several great-aunts and great-uncles, and numerous relatives. Services will be held at Markleysburg Church of the Brethren, Markleysburg, Pa., at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, with Rev. Joe Brown officiating. Dale V. Staley
Dale V. Staley, formerly of Callen Avenue, passed away Jan. 20, 2002, at the Madison Rehabilitation Center. He was born July 13, 1926, in Morgantown, a son of the late Arthur D. and Ruth Catlett Staley. He was a cradle roll member of the Spruce Street United Methodist Church. Dale was a graduate of Morgantown High School. He was employed by University Supply Company as a salesman and manager in the Morgantown and Kingwood areas, serving his customers for 40 years. He retired in 1983. He also worked at WVU Physical Plant and Marrara Oil Company in Kingwood. He was a veteran and served his country in the U.S. Army with the 74th Ordnance Depot Company stationed in the Pacific from 1944-46. He was also a member of the Morgantown VFW Post 548. Dale was the husband of Neva Staley, to whom he was devoted for 55 years and the proud father of three children -- two daughters and spouses, Rita J. and David B. Friend, of Morgantown, Tama P. and Don Southard, of Kannapolis, N.C., and a son and spouse, Dale V. II, and Sarah Staley, of Mount Pleasant, N.C.; three grandchildren, Christopher D. Southard, of Morgantown, Justin D. Southard, of Kannapolis, and Meghan E. Staley, of Mount Pleasant. He is also survived by one brother and spouse, Brinley and Marjorie Staley, of Morgantown; a sister, Patty Barthlow, of Scott Depot; one sister-in-law, Betty Staley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Blaine Staley. Family members said his sense of humor and love initiating a laugh will be missed by family and friends. He was also an avid Mountaineer fan. The family will receive friends at Hastings Funeral Home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, and Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Cecil Junior Wolfe
Cecil Junior Wolfe, 60, of Route 1, Metz, died Saturday evening, Jan. 19, 2002, in Fairmont General Hospital after a long illness. He was born May 20, 1941, in Preston County, a son of Martha Geraldine Wolfe, of Baxter, and the late Cecil Eugene Wolfe. He was a member of the First Century Church of Metz. He was a coal miner, with 33 years of service, last working at Martinka Mines as a shuttle car operator. He enjoyed professional football and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was also an avid race car fan. Survivors include his wife, Judith "Sunshine" Lehew Wolfe, of Metz community; two stepsons, Greg and his wife Gayle Thomas, of Fairmont, and Jeff Thomas, of Salem, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Shelley Groat, of Fairmont; two brothers, Michael and his wife Elizabeth Wolfe, of Fairmont, and Gary Wolfe, of Preston County; a sister, Tammy Jean Wolfe, of Baxter; seven stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Wolfe. Lawrence A. McDonald
Lawrence A. McDonald, 86, of Dug Hill Road, Morgantown, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born March 5, 1915, in Morgantown, a son of the late Jesse James and Hannah Hilling McDonald. He was retired from the Pursglove No. 15 Mine as a block layer. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Beulah Free Methodist Church. He is survived by one daughter and spouse, Diane and Richard Jones, of Jackson, Miss.; one son and spouse, Larry and Carolyn McDonald, of Morgantown; one stepson and spouse, Clarence and Shirley McDonald, of Ravenna, Ohio; one stepdaughter and spouse, Dorothy and Harold Cunningham, of Bruceton Mills; two brothers, Warren McDonald, of Morgantown, and Calvin McDonald, of Morgantown; two sisters, Elnora Sturm, and Aretta Nicholson, of Morgantown; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace N. Shaw McDonald; one stepson, Web McDonald; two brothers, Delmar McDonald, and Howard McDonald; and two sisters, Viola Hess, and Celia Pearl McDonald. Garnet 'Bubbie' Hovatter
Garnet "Bubbie" Bell Hovatter, 70, of Donley Street, Morgantown, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at her residence. She was born May 3, 1931, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Clyde and Nellie Bell. She worked as a practical nurse; as a factory worker in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the Canteen Restaurant in Morgantown. She enjoyed canning and cooking for large parties that she often hosted. She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Tammy and Kenny Johnson, of Morgantown; beautiful twin granddaughters, Laura and Jennifer Johnson; her longtime companion, Edward Austin, of Morgantown; one brother, Charles "Ray" Bell, of Rivesville; one sister, Roxanne "Roxie" Hostutler, of Morgantown; her best friend, Rose Ramsey, of Osage; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Hovatter; two sisters, Gladys Austin and Maude Arnette; and two brothers, Clarence "Red" Bell and Clifford Bell. Friends may call at Fred L. Beulah Molisee
Beulah Molisee, 93, of Masontown, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 10, 1908, in Morgantown, a daughter of the late Bruce and Jessie Spurgeon O'Neal. She is survived by one son, William Ross Estel, of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Sandra Molisee, of Morgantown, and Mary Fitzwater, of Belvue; three sisters, Nelma Cole, of Masontown, Gail Jones, of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Hornex, of Zanesville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Molisee; two brothers, Edward Edwin O'Neal, and William O'Neal; one sister, Goldie Neazin; and two children, Goldie May Estel, and Billie Jean Estel. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Glenn Riggleman officiating. Burial will follow at the Pisgah Cemetery.
