Anna McGinnis Hartley
Anna Kathryn McGinnis Hartley, 73, of Rock Lake, Fairmont, formerly of Bridgeport, died Monday, March 18, 2002, in West Virginia University's Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Monongah, a daughter of the late Lewis William and Bessie Augusta Pratt McGinnis. Mrs. Hartley retired as the office manager for Murray, Murray and Grove, ODs. She was a charter member and ruling elder of the Bridgeport Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Rock Lake Friday Night Dinner Club. Kathryn is survived by her husband of 54 years, John C. Hartley; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Phillip O'Neal, Danielsville, Ga.; one sister, Eleanor (Harlan) Janes, of Barrington, Ill.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rex and Louise McGinnis, of Clarksburg, and Wayne and Carol McGinnis, of Bethel, Ohio; a special Godson, Ryan A. Nicewarner, of Bridgeport; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, Allen Chapel, 215 E. Main St., Bridgeport, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at Bridgeport Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 21, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Gary McGrew officiating. Mrs. Hartley will lie in state one hour prior to her funeral service. Interment will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery. Olive Ann McCartney
Olive Ann McCartney, 80, of Pleasant Hill Road, Morgantown, passed away at home on Monday, March 18, 2002. She was born May 25, 1921, as Olive Ann Helmick, the daughter of the late Burley B. and Anna F. Helmick. She was the owner and seamstress of Granny's Sew and So, an independent business operator in Morgantown. Olive was a member of the Brookhaven United Methodist Church. She is survived by eight children and spouses, two sons and six daughters, Edwin and Elwanda McCartney, of Morgantown, Willis and Linda McCartney, of Morgantown, Peggy and James Connally, of Morgantown, Phyllis and Allen Jasper, of South Carolina, Nancy and Kenny O'Neal, of Connecticut, Diana and Regis Rimlinger, of Ohio, Lois Mayfield, of Morgantown, and Judith and John Maloney, of Morgantown; a brother, Willard B. Helmick, of Morgantown; a sister, Loretta Sutton, of Maryland; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marple Edwin McCartney, on July 17, 1978; two sisters, Bessie Metheney, and Myrna Stump; a brother, J.L. Metheney. Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, March 21, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Elizabeth "Butch" Baker officiating. Sarah L. Hutzler Miller
Sarah Lavina Hutzler Miller, 85, of "Red Hill," Martinsburg, died Monday morning, March 18, 2002, at City Hospital. Born Oct. 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Onita Jane Whitacre Hutzler and John Strother Hutzler. For 60 years Mrs. Miller was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Martinsburg, having taught Christian Education classes as a young member. Graduating from Martinsburg High School, class of 1934, she and her late husband, W. Harley Miller Jr., would often host class reunions at their home, "Red Hill." Mrs. Miller was an active leader in the Berkeley County Parent Teacher Association and the Martinsburg High School Band Boosters, serving as an officer in both. She spent many years as a member and leader in the former Martinsburg Golf and Country Club. Mrs. Miller was one of the original leaders in organizing the United Nations Day Dinner, held annually at the former Shenandoah Hotel. She was instrumental in advancing and developing programs for the mentally and physically handicapped in the area that led eventually to the establishment of the Eastern Panhandle Training Center. As a member of Berk-Mar Garden Club, she and her husband opened their home and gardens for showing a number of times on the annual Shenandoah Potomac Council of Garden Clubs spring tour. Mrs. Miller's labor of love in later years had been her involvement in the WVU Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, where she served as a member of its Advisory Board, donating countless hours in procuring the necessary funds to provide the state of West Virginia with a major cancer care center. She often helped to underwrite activities for the Annual Cancer Center Gala held in the spring at The Greenbrier Resort. She was a devoted and active participant all of her life in the contracting firm, W. Harley Miller, Inc., a business she and her husband started on his return after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. She was instrumental in the establishment of W. Harley Miller Contractors, Inc. upon her husband's death in 1981. She leaves three daughters, Carolyn Jane and son-in-law Gilbert B. Miller Sr., Diane Rebecca and son-in-law James W. Dailey II, all of Martinsburg, and Judith Marie Miller, at home; five grandchildren, Kimberly W. Echelberger and Sarah W. Golliday, both of Richmond, Harley O. Wagner, Betty Christine Bolyard and James W. Dailey III, all of Martinsburg; six great-grandchildren, Carolyn C. Golliday, Sarah A. Echelberger, Miller W. Golliday, all of Richmond, and Katherine R. Bolyard, Andrew B. Bolyard, Emma Grace Bolyard, all of Martinsburg; a brother, Dr. James B. Hutzler and wife, Lucille, of Martinsburg, and their daughter, Laura Ann Weiss and grandchildren, Luke C. Weiss and Joshua P. Weiss, all of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Bernard H. Byers, of Winchester, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, W. Harley Miller Jr., who died Oct. 9, 1981; and her three brothers, Charles N. Hutzler, R. Wayne Hutzler and John N. Hutzler Sr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 700 New York Ave., Martinsburg, with the Rev. Arlene R. Carr and the Rev. Jack T. Sutor Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Friends will be received from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Freda B. Aronhalt
Freda B. Aronhalt, 77, of Brookhaven Road, Morgantown, entered into rest Monday, March 18, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Morgantown, a daughter of the late Frank and Opal Wright Casteel. She was retired from the purchasing department at WVU Hospital, and prior to that had been employed at Bell's Wholesale for 25 years. She was an active member of the Brookhaven United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, but her greatest love was for her husband and children, and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, R.J. Aronhalt; one daughter and spouse, Susan and Richard Graziani of Morgantown; one son, Donald "Kep" Aronhalt of Morgantown; one stepdaughter, Brenna Dean of Arlington, Va.; one sister and spouse, Dixie and Joe Gaspar of Nashua, N.H.; two grandchildren, Sara E. Graziani and Anthony "Alex" Graziani; one niece, Connie Gaspar of Reisterstown, Md.; four nephews, Joe Gaspar of Bethlehem, Pa., Bruce Casteel of Somerset, Pa., Terry Casteel of Markleysburg, Pa., and Roger Casteel of Florida; and one brother-in-law, Donald Aronhalt of Morgantown. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Curtis, Darrell and Samuel Casteel. Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Elizabeth Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnwood Cemetery. George W. Berry Jr.
George W. Berry Jr., of Reedsville, died March 14, 2002, at his home at the age of 67. His body was donated to The Human Gift Registry. He served in the United States Army from 1953-1957 as an M.P. He was a security guard for United Technologies Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Conn. He retired in 1991. He was the son of the late Alma and George Berry Sr., of Sabraton. He was preceded in death by Claire Dermeirs Berry. He is survived by two brothers, Martin, of Tennessee, and Jack, of Morgantown; a sister, Barbara Martin, of West Virginia; four nieces; two nephews; 12 grandnephews and nieces; best friend, Shirley Cordwell; four sons, Ronald, Robert, Richard, and Roger and spouses; two daughters, Rebecca Wilhelm and Ruth Berry; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Instead of flowers, friends may make donations to his favorite charity: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the Disabled American Veterans.

Ricky D. Cole, 43, of Terra Alta, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at his home. Arrangements are incomplete, under the direction of Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta.

Dr. James C. Eaves
Dr. James C. Eaves, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002, in Louisville, Ky., at Baptist Hospital East. He was born at Hillside, Ky., in Muhlenberg County in 1912 and graduated from Greenville High School in 1930. He received a B.A. degree with a major in mathematics and physics from the University of Kentucky in 1935; an M.A. majoring in mathematics and mathematics statistics, again from UK, in 1941; and a Ph.D. in 1949 from the University of North Carolina, majoring in mathematics and matrix algebra. Dr. Eaves was a teacher at Hillside School from 1932-35, in Pineville, Ky., from 1936-37, and at Morton Junior High in Lexington from 1937-40. From 1940, he taught in the mathematics departments at the University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina, University of Alabama, Auburn University, and returned to UK in 1954 to head the department of mathematics and astronomy. In 1967, he became head of the department of mathematics at West Virginia University, retiring as Centennial Professor Emeritus in the late 1970s. While at UK, using the university telescope he opened up the universe for the city, hosting many evening viewings of various astronomical events. He helped establish the computer science program at UK and served as a consultant to IBM and to NASA, leading a team doing early orbital research related to the three body problem. Dr. Eaves authored numerous mathematics textbooks in such topics as geometry and matrices, and held many patents in such varied fields as submarine tracking and watch movements. He was also an artist, playing many instruments including the piano, clarinet, guitar, banjo and spoons, a writer of children's stories and songs, a painter, a juggler, a gymnast, a rope trick expert, and a magician. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Dr. Eaves received the Phi Delta Kappa Service Award, was a Haggin Fellow at UK, was international president of Mu Alpha Theta, and held various offices or was a member of many other organizations, including the Mathematical Association of America, Sigma Xi, Pi Mu Epsilon and the American Mathematical Society. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maona Shinkle Eaves; a son, James C. Eaves Jr.; a daughter, Mona J. Eaves; sisters Capitola Brake, of Chicago, Ill., Gladys Young, of Hinsdale, Ill., and Mary Trevathan, of Evansville, Ind.; and brothers John Eaves, of Hillside, Ky., and Billy Eaves, of Altus, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Ridley "Whippoorwill" Eaves and Agnes Williams, sisters Geneva, Edna, Betsy and Netty, and brothers Harry and Martin. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time Monday, March 25, 2002, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, Ky., with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery. Samuel S. Pierce Jr.
Samuel S. Pierce Jr., 89, of Fairmont Avenue, Westover, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Monongalia General Hospital. He was born June 27, 1912, in Rilton, Pa., a son of the late Samuel S. Sr. and Sadie Webster Pierce. He had been a member of the Spruce Street United Methodist Church, and was retired from the U.S. Steel Corporation in 1975. He is survived by two daughters and spouses, Carolyn J. and Melvin Erenrich, of Westover, and Beth and Jack Magyar, of Greensburg, Pa.; one son and spouse, Samuel S. and Helen Pierce III, of Freeport, Pa.; two brothers, John Pierce, of West Newton, Pa., and William Pierce, of Benson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Myrtle Field Pierce; one sister, Beatrice Wallis; and one brother, Raymond Pierce. Leah Virginia Komuda
Leah Virginia Drainer Komuda, former resident of Morgantown, died Jan. 29, 2002, in Chicago. She was born Oct. 5, 1941, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Augustus Drainer and Eva Grace Block Drainer. She is survived by her two children, daughter and spouse, Evie and Wally Weigands, of Romeoville, Ill., and her son and spouse, Greg and Stacie Robinson, of Glendale Heights, Ill.; two sisters, Billie Shrout, of Pentress and Jane Garrett, of Morgantown; four brothers, Gerald, Charles, and Rich, all of Chicago, and David, of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Komuda and a sister, Peggy Drainer Scios and two brothers, James and Edward. Services were held at Cypress Funeral Home in West Chicago with the Rev. Jerry Frens officiating.

Maude O. Tyner
Maude O. Tyner, 92, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital. The daughter of the late Eban and Artie Wilson Liston, she was born Oct. 6, 1909, in Valley Point. She was a homemaker and worked in real estate and insurance in Akron, Ohio and Morgantown, until her retirement in 1969. She is survived by a son, Thomas Osborne, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a stepson, David Brotherton, of Charleston, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, June Reed, of Woodstock, Ill., and Karen Plaster, of Uniontown, Pa.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by three husbands; one sister, Jessie Liston Ault, and one brother, Emil L. Liston. Friends may call at Carl R. Dorothy Lee Maier
Dorothy Lee Maier, 80, of Kingwood, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the home of her niece, Loretta Clarkson. She was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Corinth, a daughter of the late Albon G. and Stella C. Casteel Smith. She retired in 1980 from Sheidow Bronze with 14 years of service. She is survived by one son, Thomas E. Arnold of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; one brother, Harry Smith of Fellowsville; one grandson, Robert J. Arnold of Salem, Wis., and three great-grandchildren, Mikayla J. Arnold, Brent M. Spohn, and Stephen M. Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell "Buck" Maier; four brothers, June Smith, Lester Smith, Joe Smith and Foster Smith; and two sisters, Jesse Riley and Dollie V. Smith. Mabel B. Toothman
Mabel B. Mayfield Toothman, 89, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at Mon General Hospital. She was born April 12, 1912, in Dellslow, daughter of the late George and Melissa Cress Mayfield. She was Baptist by faith and a homemaker for many years. She is survived by five sons, Dewayne "Skip" Toothman Sr., of Morgantown, Joe Toothman, of Morgantown, James Toothman, of Lilborn, Ga., Jack Toothman, of Highland, Calif., and Paul Toothman, of Maryland; one daughter, Corrine Theil, of Georgia; one siste r, Louise Spitznogle, of Mount Morris; 40 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Toothman; one son, George "Bud" Toothman; three daughters, Cora Parkinson, Melissa Toothman, and Phyllis Toothman; two brothers, Clarence Cress and Omer Mayfield; and two sister, Opal Cross and Mintie Nic holson. Mary Frances Rucker Fox
Mary Frances Rucker Fox, 78, Penn Hills, Pa., died Monday, March 18, 2002. She was the beloved wide of Lloyd Nelson Fox and mother of Harley Nelson Fox. She was a registered nurse in York, Pa., Grafton, Morgantown, and Cumberland, Md., and a graduate of Davis Memorial Hospital of Nursing in Elkins. Graveside services will be held for Mrs. Fox at the Belington Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25, at the family plot. Arrangements by Soxman Funeral Homes Ltd., Morasco Chapel, 9406 Frankstown Road (near Graham Boulevard) Penn Hills, where a memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m.

Thelma D. Audia Paris, 89, of Kensington Avenue, Star City, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Point Manor Personal Care Home, in Point Marion, Pa. She was born May 18, 1912 in Monongah, a daughter of the late Tony and Barbara Veltri Audia. She was retired from the Beaumont Glass Company and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Star City. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Fedikovich, of Star City; one son and spouse, Anthony J. and Patricia Paris, of Huron, Ohio; three granddaughters; Janice V. Johnson, of Raleigh, N.C., Denise A. Fowler, of Morgantown, Jerad and Jamee Vasil, of Raleigh, Ashley O'Brien, of Huron, Ohio, and Mackenzie Hilton, of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, "Bennie" Audia, of Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Paris, on May 13, 2000; and a son-in-law, Thomas Fedikovich on August 12, 2001.
