Tommy Oliver "T.O." Stotler, 78, of Paw Paw, WV, died on Tuesday, March 21, 2000 at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs. Born October 29, 1921 in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Thomas Roy and Icy Mae Vanorsdale Stotler. He attended the Community Fellowship in Levels. He attended school at Orleans Crossroads. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1, 1942 until October 9, 1945. He achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and a Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Post #126 , Paw Paw and the V.F. W. Post in Oldtown, MD. He owned and operated his own saw mill until his retirement in 1985. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Alberta Irene Stotler Stotler, at home; three daughters, Sandra Lee Hiett, Linda Sue Puffinburger and Tammy Marie Robinette all of Paw Paw; four sons, Harold William Stotler of York, PA, Tony David Stotler of Oldtown, MD, Everett Leon Stotler and Michael Lee Stotler, both of Paw Paw; two sisters, Margaret Riggleman of Magnolia and Lillie Harrelson of Martinsburg; one brother, Howard E. Stotler of Great Cacapon; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Ray Oliver Stotler; one sister, Gertrude Bishop; four brothers, Irvin Stotler, John Stotler, Elwood Stotler and Harry Stotler. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 24 at the Lighthouse Assembly of God, Route 29, Paw Paw, with the Rev. L. Earl Travis and the Rev. Wayne Stotler officiating. Interment with military graveside honors provided by the Tri State Honor Guard was in Camp Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw. Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs was in charge of arrangements.

Rosalie I. Miller

Rosalie Irene Miller, 84, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died on Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at Valley View Nursing Home. Born April 22, 1915 in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Boyd and Virgie Batt Fearnow. She was a member of Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church. She attended the Mt. Vernon School in Morgan County. She had worked as a seamstress at Jacob Brothers Sewing Factory in Hancock, MD, and had been a homemaker in recent years. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Nevil Elsworth Miller, at home; two sons, Lynn C. Miller of Berkeley Springs and Wayne E. Miller of Buchanan; three grandchildren, Allison E. Miller of Berkeley Springs, Kimberly A. Miller and Eric W. Miller both of Buchanan; one sister, Marie Clark of Berkeley Springs; two brothers, Fred Fearnow and Ray Fearnow, both of Berkeley Springs; one nephew; one great niece and one great nephew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Eltha Fearnow and two brothers, Benton Fearnow and Jesse Fearnow, Jr. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, at Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert S. Osborne officiating. Entombment was in the Pleasant View Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Martinsburg. Anna M. Norris

Anna Mary Norris, 84, formerly of Warfordsburg, PA, died Thursday, March 23, 2000 at Woodland Retirement Center in Orbisonia, PA. Born May 10, 1915, in Hancock, MD, she was the daughter of the late James and Cora Ritz Smith. Her husband, Isaac "Ike" Norris, died in 1988. She was a retired farmer and homemaker. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hancock. She is survived by one son, William I. Norris of Camp Hill, PA; five granddaughters; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ritz Smith, Charles Smith, John Smith and Francis Smith; and one half-sister, Virginia Dyer. Services were held Monday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hancock. The Rev. Timothy P. Davis officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Donald H. Mellott Sr.

Donald H. Mellott Sr., 67, of Needmore, PA, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, PA. Born September 9, 1932, in Needmore, he was the son of the late John Henry and Rosetta Taylor Mellott. He retired from H.B. Mellott Estate Inc. in Warfordsburg, PA, as a cement truck driver after 38 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1957. He was a Protestant. He is survived by his wife, Wanda L. Vanorsdale Mellott of Needmore, whom he married December 28, 1957; two daughters, Wendy L. Hill of Warfordsburg and Tina L. Wilson of Needmore; two sons, Donald H. Mellott Jr. of Needmore and Max W. Mellott of Hedgesville, WV; one sister, Geneva Mellott of Warfords-burg; one brother, Blair C. Mellott of Warfordsburg; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Services were held Tuesday, April 4 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Warfordsburg. The Rev. Denver A. Dorothy J. Saunders

Dorothy Jane Yost Saunders, 77, of Berkeley Springs, WV died Sunday, April 2, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs. Born in Great Cacapon, WV, on February 2, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Fannie Shafer Crawford. She was a member of the Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High school, class of 1941. She and her late husband, Cleo Yost, operated Tink's Grocery for 21 years. She then worked as a practical nurse before becoming a real estate agent in Berkeley Springs for the next 20 years. She was a member of the Eastern Panhandle Board of Realtors before her retirement. She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth A. Truschel of Nokesville, VA; three sons, David C. Yost, Andrew H. Yost and Thomas W. Yost all of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Kenneth Crawford of San Jose, CA; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cleo "Tink" Yost in 1970 and her second husband, Robert Saunders in 1976; three sisters, Ethel Clatterbuck, Lucille Martin Price and Wanda Widmyer. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor George Hopkins officiating. George H. Bageant, 71, of Warfordsburg, PA, died Thurs-day, March 30, 2000, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. Born September 17, 1928, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Cleo Preston and Mary Elizabeth Potter Bageant. He retired from General Motors Corporation in Martins-burg, WV, where he worked in the Maintenance Department. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army National Guard with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member and elder of Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church in Hancock, MD. He was a member of the local United Auto Workers. He is survived by his wife, Nadine Y. Mitchell Bageant; his former wife, Janice N. Pleasants Bageant of Berkeley Springs, WV; five sons, Paul G. Bageant of Tallahassee, FL, Larry E. Bageant of Spotsylvania, VA, Keith G. Bageant of New Carrolton, MD, Eric A. Bageant of Kearneysville, WV and Kenneth L. Bageant of Hancock; two stepdaughters, Beverly Powell of Hancock and Bonnie Jo Ashkettle of War-fordsburg; two stepsons, Randy C. Flowers and Thomas L. Flowers, both of Hancock; 12 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and eight great step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Robin D. Bageant; and one brother, Frederick E. Bageant. Pearl E. Rankin, 99, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died Sunday, April 2, 2000 at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs. Born in Morgan County, WV on November 13, 1900, she was the daughter of the late George and Sarah Harden Fredman. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She retired as a cook from Berkeley Springs High School after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society and United Methodist Women and a charter member of the Morgan County Volunteer Rescue Service Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Retired School Employees Association. She is survived by three daughters, Marie E. Douglas, Iona R. Barker and Ilean C. Waugh, all of Berkeley Springs; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Rankin in 1944; two daughters, Frances Shade and Winona Rankin; one son, Melvin Rankin; four sisters, Melvie Michael, Virgie Maconaughey, Viola Clark and Ruth Wolford; and one brother, Elmer Fredman. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Henry Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery. J. Kenneth Willingham

J. Kenneth Willingham, 76, of Everett, PA and formerly of Ranson, WV, died Friday, March 31, 2000 at the Bon Seccors Hospital in Altoona, PA. Born October 18, 1923 in Summit Point, WV, he was the son of the late Lawrence Durard and Fannie Whittington Willingham. He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Robinson Willingham, in 1982. He was retired from the United States Government at Weather Mountain, Bluemont, VA, having served as a federal firefighter for 20 years at the rank of captain. He was a life member of the Citizens Volunteer Fire Company, where he was an active member for 42 years and where he served as chief for 25 years. He volunteered as Emergency Services Director for Jefferson County, WV for 17 years before becoming a paid director until his retirement. He was instrumental in establishing the 911 Emergency Communications Radio System in Jefferson County. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S.Navy; a member of the American Legion Post 113 in Bedford, PA; and a member of the Bedford Elks Club Men's Bowling League. He was of Methodist faith. He was an avid golfer. He was currently employed with Bob Evans Restaurant in Breezewood, PA. He is survived by his second wife, Naomi J. Exline Willingham of Everett; one daughter Linda L. Osbourn of Ranson; one stepdaughter, Rhonda K. Wills Knable of Warfordsburg, PA; two stepsons, Ronnie Wills of Hedgesville, WV and Willy Wills of Martinsburg, WV; two brothers, Lawrence L. "Buck" Willingham of Middleway, WV and David A. Willingham of Williamsport, MD; two granddaughters; two great grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one nieces and three nephews. Services were held on Tuesday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main Street, Hancock, MD. The Rev. Robert G. Brennan, Jr. officiated. Burial with military honors by the Newton D. Patricia Lee Fiske, 59, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, March 26, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs. Born July 10, 1940, in Antlers, OK, she was the daughter of the late Hugo Harry Gray and Dorothy Mills Woodward. She was employed as a waitress. She is survived by her husband, Carl G. Fiske; two daughters, Estalla Lee Welch of Hyattsville, MD and Ivy Joann Westover of Augusta; two sons, Charles Fiske of Virginia Beach, VA and Michael Wayne Fiske of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Shirley Shoemaker of Olney, MD; two brothers, William "Billy" Mills of California and Leon Woodward of Berkeley Springs; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Herman E. Jacobs; and one daughter, Freeda Kay Jacobs. Funeral services were held Friday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with Robert Summers officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Willie S. Merchant

Willie Sylvester "Bill" Merchant, 88, of Berkeley Springs died Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility. Born in Morgan County on May 24, 1911, he was the son of the late W.D. and Bessie Cain Merchant. Schools he attended in Morgan County were Highland, Mount Cecil, New Hope and Mt. Wesley Academy. As a young man he worked in the tomato canneries and with his father on the sawmill. He and his wife Chlorus operated Merchant's Gulf Service from 1968-1979. He was proprietor of M & M Salvage Yard from 1958-1990. He was also a Chevrolet car collector. Survivors include one daughter, Helen J. Soper of Berkeley Springs; one son, Raymond "Buddy" Merchant of Berkeley Springs; five sisters, Geneva Custer of Martinsburg, Mary Hurley of Ocala, FL, Louise Benavides of Branson, MO, Pauline Asbury and Anna Marie McCumbee both of Berkeley Springs and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Cain Merchant in 1947; his second wife, Chlorus Yost Merchant in 1996 and one brother, Roscoe Merchant. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. Revs. Jack and Shirley Hiles officiated, assisted by Kenneth Heironimus. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery. Charles B. Bull, 83, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, MD. Born September 7, 1916 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Charles Bull and Sarah E. Foreman Bull. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs. He was retired from Penn Central Railroad in Baltimore and was presently employed by Seely Pine Furniture in Berkeley Springs. He was a member of the Eastern Panhandle Shrine Club, Landmark Masonic Lodge 127 AF&AM in Baltimore, 32 degree in Wheeling, Scottish Rite, ALI GHAN Shrine in Cumberland and the Osiris Shrine Temple, Wheeling, WV. Surviving are one sister, Virginia M. MacNeal of Baltimore; and one brother, Harry C. Bull Sr. of Littleton, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Nelson Bull and one brother, Wilson Bull. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 11 at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 South Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Owen Womack officiating. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Berkeley Springs with Masonic graveside services.

William "Bill" Eugene Hickle, 45, of Great Cacapon, formerly of Cumberland, MD, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000. Born January 29, 1955 in Cumberland, he was the son of Dolly D. Dunaway, Short Gap. He was employed by U.S. Silica, Berkeley Springs. He was a 1973 graduate of Fort Hill High School. In addition to his mother, surviving are one sister, Robin James; two nephews; one niece; his companion Laura Gladhill; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were conducted at Scarpelli Funeral Home, PA, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD on Saturday, April 8 at 12 noon with the Fr. Milton A. Hipsley officiating. Interment was in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Spring Gap, MD.

Elizabeth Crouse, 93, of Paw Paw died Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney. Born April 15, 1910 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur P. and Ida Lewis Mason. Surviving are one brother, Gilbert Mason and one sister, Dorothy Leach, both of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delby T. Crouse. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at Mt. Union Christian Church in Slanesville. The Rev. Cliff Rayburn officiated. Interment was in the Old Kidwell Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Griffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge.

Charles Henry "Jumpy" Barker, 75, of Great Cacapon, WV, died on Friday, April 14, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, WV. Born January 12, 1925 in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late John Line and Georgia Mae Weaver Barker. He was of the Protestant faith. He attended Great Cacapon Elementary School, Great Cacapon. He worked as a trackman with the B&O and CSX railroad for 43 years and retired in July, 1985. He was an avid fisherman. Surviving are three sisters, Mattie E. Gloyd of Orleans Crossroads, Pearl V. Sisk of Ridgeley and Betty M. Crouse of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Earl J. Barker of Great Cacapon and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Emily Stinebaugh and two brothers, Cecil Barker and John L. Barker. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 17 at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs with Pastor Steven R. Dawson officiating. Interment was in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon, WV.

Genevieve Irene Ambrose, 80, of Berkeley Springs died Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. Born in Berkeley Springs on July 13, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Hammond R. and Ardella McCoy Spielman. She attended schools in Morgan County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In earlier years she was employed by Starview Drive-In and Shockey's Grocery in Berkeley Springs. She was a member of Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. She is survived by one sister, Emmajean Weber of Falls Church, VA; one brother, Gerald Lee Spielman of Dundalk, MD; many nieces and nephews and Wayne and Lila Speilman with whom she made her home since 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Kenneth Ambrose in 1984; one infant son, George Ronald Ambrose; one sister, Willadean Gregory and one brother, Kenneth J. Spielman. Services were held Sunday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born March 2, 1914 in Morgan County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Sherrard Clement Unger and Sarah Ann Beatty Unger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert T. Barnes, in 1970. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She is survived by six daughters, Charlotte M. Trail, Lucille R. Ray and Barbara A. Barnes, all of Berkeley Springs, Margaret F. Fleegle of Hancock, MD, Mildred K. Deatherage of Crossville and Rachel S. Born March 4, 1939 in Hancock, she was the daughter of Mildred Boden Snow of Hancock and the late George Snow. She was employed at the Tri-State Community Health Center as a referral specialist for several years. She was a member of the Hancock United Methodist Church in Hancock. In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband, Marion Courtney of Warfordsburg, whom she married April 10, 1976; one son, Jeff True of Hancock; one stepdaughter, Carol Kershner of Westminster, MD; one stepson, Gail Courtney of Lineboro; two brothers, George Snow and Greg Snow, both of Hancock; three grandsons and a number of nieces and nephews. Hugh Allen Havermale, 1/SGT/U.S. Army/Ret., 63, of Berkeley Springs died on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. Born January 23, 1937 in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Russell Lee and Rose Virginia Pearl Duckwall Hovermale. He attended Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs. He was a 1954 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. He attended James Rumsey Vocational Technical Institute where he received machine trade and HVAC training. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until his retirement in 1975 with tours of duty in Korea, Vietnam and Germany. He was awarded three Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars, the Medal of Commendation, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a captain with Pinkerton Security from 1976-1984 and worked in the Western Maryland, Baltimore and Eastern Panhandle areas. He then worked as a gas station attendant with the Berkeley Springs Chevron Station from 1991-1992, the BP Station in Hancock from 1992-1993 and retired from the Exxon Station in Clear Spring, MD. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1483, Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60, the Tri-State Honor Guard, a life member of Morgan County Chapter #34 D.A.V. and a life member of Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post #4019, all in Berkeley Springs. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Nancy Drue VanGosen Havermale, at home; three sons, Ernest Dale Havermale, Sr. of Hedgesville, Darren Robert Havermale and Steven Allen Havermale, both of Berkeley Springs; one daughter, Lisa Rose Ellen McCumbee of Berkeley Springs; five grandchildren, Jessica Nickens of St. Louis, MO, Sarah Nickens of Hagerstown, MD, Heather Nickens, Krystal Drue Havermale and Ernest Dale Havermale, Jr., all of Hedgesville; one great grandson; two sisters, Charlotte Colley of Winchester, VA and Mary Ellen Bolyard of Grafton, VA; three brothers, Charles William Hovermale of Myrtle Beach, SC, Raymond Lee Hovermale of Clear Spring and Roger Eugene Hovermale of Bridgeville, DE and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Phyllis June Speelman. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. Rev. Hennis H. Fox and Pastor Jim Downey officiated. Interment with full military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard were in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs. Violet C. Bishop

Violet Catherine Hattie Vanorsdale Carbaugh Bishop, 68, of Berkeley Springs, WV died on Saturday, April 15, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs. Born April 20, 1931 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Martha Alice Farris Vanorsdale. She was of the Protestant faith. She attended public schools in Great Cacapon. She was a homemaker and liked sewing. Surviving are two sons, William Oscar Carbaugh and Edward Bernard Ray Carbaugh, both of Berkeley Springs; four grandchildren, William Roney Carbaugh, Nancy Irene Catherine Carbaugh, Edward Tobias Carbaugh and Robert Clinton Carbaugh, all of Berkeley Springs; four step children; many step-grandchildren; step great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Tobias Carbaugh; her second husband, Herman R. Bishop and one brother, Lee Edward Whitacre Vanorsdale. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with Rev. Hennis H. Fox and Rev. William C. Swope officiating. Interment was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Jack Householder
1930-2000
Jack Householder, 69, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Martinsburg, WV, died on Saturday, April 15, 2000 at Baptist Memorial Medical Center in Jacksonville. Born May 14, 1930 in Berkeley Springs, WV he was the son of the late Charlie and Betty Kesecker Householder. He was a member of the North Jacksonville Baptist Church, Jacksonville. He attended public schools in Morgan County. He moved from Martinsburg to Jacksonville in 1962 and for more than 30 years, owned and operated a general aircraft maintenance facility in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Quiet Birdman's Pilot Association. He was active in Gideon's International. He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on May 11, 1950. Surviving are his wife, Willadene J. Sanders Householder, at home; two sons, Stephen Householder and Darryl Kim Householder; three daughters, Deborah Jewel Shaw, Judith Christine Albritton and Barbara Dianne McDaniel all of Jacksonville; 12 grandchildren; one great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebecca Michael and Esther Yost and two brothers, Charles Warren Householder and Herbert Householder. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 20 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Harrison Avenue and Goff Street, Berkeley Springs with Pastor Wayne Frum officiating. Interment with graveside military honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, April 20 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Hugh E. Roof
1921-2000
Hugh E. Roof, 79, of Unger, WV, died on Friday, April 14, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. Born February 22, 1921 in Forest City, IL, he was the son of the late Otis and Hazel Shawgo Roof. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a 1939 graduate of Forest City High School, Forest City, IL. He served as a pilot with the 311 Troop Carrier Squadron, U.S. Air Force, during World War II and was honorably discharged at the rank of first lieutenant. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He was a pilot with the Hawaii Air National Guard and worked with the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller, retiring as deputy chief of the Honolulu Tower, Honolulu, HI. He was a member of the Southern Gentlemen Fishing Club, Cape Charles, VA, Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post #4019, Berkeley Springs, and the Quiet Birdmen. He lived in Hawaii for many years, relocated to Baltimore, MD and then moved to Unger in 1978. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Geer Roof, at home; two sons, Thomas E. Roof of Arcata, CA and Robb E. Roof of Pensacola, FL; one grandson, Jason R. Roof of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Bessie M. Sevier of Pekin, IL; one brother, Lyle W. Roof of Lady Lake, FL and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Eileen M. Robbins and one brother, Donald L. Roof. Private services and burial will be in Punch Bowl National Cemetery, Honolulu, HI. Melvin W. Ganoe
1928-2000
Melvin W. Ganoe, 71, of Greencastle, PA, died Saturday, April 15, 2000 in the Waynesboro, PA Hospital. Born November 25, 1928 in Berkeley Springs, WV, he was the son of the late Albert and Eva (Yost) Ganoe. In his earlier years, he worked at the former Maugansville Elevator and also did construction work. In 1969, he founded the Ganoe Paving Co. of Greencastle and retired from the business in 1991. He also operated the former Ganoe Tire Sales of Greencastle. He was a member of the Antrim Assembly of God Church of Greencastle. He liked antique cars. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Frances M. (Martin) Ganoe, who he married October 9, 1946; one daughter, Catha-rine M. Reeder of Mercersburg, PA; five sons, Melvin A. "Sonny" Ganoe and Harold I. Ganoe, both of Chambersburg, PA and David E. Ganoe, Michael L. Ganoe and Ronald L. Ganoe, all of Greencastle; one sister, Mary Purell of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Albert Ganoe of Clarksburg, WV; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one granddaughter and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday morning, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. from the Antrim Assembly of God Church, 11192 Bemisderfer Rd., Greencastle, with Rev. Rodger D. Berkey officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. Arrangements are by the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.
