Lillie Marie Leasure, 79, of Hancock, died Monday, July 3, 2000 at Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown.
Born April 15, 1921 in Morgan County, WV she was the daughter of the late Howard and Ada Plank Spielman.
She was a homemaker.
She attended Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ralph W. Leasure of Western Maryland Hospital Center; two daughters, Mary Truax of Hancock and Dorthy Silvers of Berkeley Springs; two sons, Ralph Leasure of Berkeley Springs and Donald Leasure of Hancock; two sisters, Ella Miller of Winchester, VA and Louise Lipscomb of Youngstown, OH; a granddaughter; three grandsons; five great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lester Leasure.
Services were held Friday, July 7 at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church, Hancock. The Rev. Phillip Unger officiated. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery in Berkeley Springs.

Marianne L. Murray

Marianne Lina Mehrmann Murray, 88, of Hancock died Tuesday, July 4, 2000 at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, WV.
She was born June 27, 1912 in Berlin, Germany.
She and her husband owned and operated Marianne's Lunch and Hancock News Agency and Bus Terminal.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard Murray; two sons, Peter Scherlinsky of State College, PA and Michael Murray of Hagerstown; five grandchildren and a great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Harry Scherlinsky.
Services were private. Burial was in St. Thomas' Episcopal Cemetery, Hancock.
Arrangements were by Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.

Thomas Glenn Delawder, 70, of Paw Paw died Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.
Born May 18, 1930 in Glassport, PA, he was the son of the late Harry Alston and Marjorie Mortimer Delawder.
He was a member of the Paw Paw Church of Christ, Paw Paw.
He attended public schools in Paw Paw.
He retired on May 31, 1991, after 43 years of service, as a carpenter with the CSX Railroad Maintenance of Way.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #271, Cumberland, MD.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Tiny Lou Bailey Delawder at home; one son Thomas Wayne Delawder of Ridgeley; two daughters, Tama Leigh Hiles of Berkeley Springs and Teresa Ilene Delawder of Paw Paw; five grandchildren, Kerri and Chris Dennis of Tampa, FL, Brian and Monica Hiles and Erin Hiles all of Berkeley Springs; two step-grandchildren, Brad Markwood of Dover, DE and Nikki Markwood of Ridgeley; two sisters, Betty Jane Shrout of Oldtown MD and Mary Moreland of Glen Burnie, MD; three brothers, Richard M. Delawder of Oldtown, MD, Eugene Delawder of Springfield, WV and Arthur Robertson of Holt, MO and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, his twin, Jack Wayne Delawder and Harry Alson Delawder.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 9 at Woodrow Union Cemetery, Paw Paw with Evangelist Michael D. Collins officiating.

Robert A. Barnhart
1939-2000
Robert Albert Barnhart, 60, of Warfordsburg, PA, died Saturday, July 8, 2000 at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, MD.
Born September 23, 1939 in Fulton County, PA, he is the son of Evelyn Faith Barnhart of Warfordsburg, PA and the late Albert Barnhart.
He was a 1958 graduate of Southern Fulton High School, Warfordsburg.
He was retired in 1997 from PennDOT as a state inspector after 31 years of service.
He was a lifetime farmer.
He was a member and deacon of the Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church in Warfordsburg.
Besides his mother he is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Alderton Barnhart of Warfordsburg, whom he married June 21, 1962 in Hagerstown, MD; one daughter, Stephanie Harper of Warfordsburg; two sons, Stephen Barnhart and Jason Barnhart, both of Warfordsburg; two sisters, Marlene Hill of Hagerstown and Brenda Lane of Warfordsburg; two grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley Harper of Warfordsburg and a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Besides his father he was preceded in death by one son, Robert Alan Barnhart.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 11, at 2 p.m. at the Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John R. Barlow officiating. Burial with military honors by the Fulton Honor Guard was in the adjoining church cemetery.

George L. Fearnow

George L. Fearnow, 89, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, July 2, 2000 at the Hilltop House Nursing Home, Win-chester, VA.
Born February 11, 1911 in Morgan County, he was the son of the late John Tyler Fearnow and Elizabeth Spielman Fear-now.
He began his own coal business in 1933, an ice business in 1934, hauled cans for tomato canneries and pioneered the marketing of pulpwood in Morgan County. He retired in 1974.
He was an active member of Frances Asbury United Metho-dist Church, Berkeley Springs.
He was a member of the Berkeley Springs Lions Club, DeFord Lodge #88 AF & AM for over 55 years. He was a member of the Morgan County Historical and Genealogical Society and the Morgan County Library Association.
He made 4-H All Star in 1928 at the leadership meeting at Jacksons Mill.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine E. Milleson Fearnow, who died in 1970.
He is survived by three sisters, Maxine Gobeil of Birmingham, AL; Katherine Dougal of Kerrville, TX and Tresa Ellen DeHaven of Winchester, VA; two brothers, Henry W. Fearnow of Washington, D.C. and John T. Fearnow, Jr. of Sterling, VA; three nieces, nine nephews, five great nieces, seven great nephews, three great-great nieces and three great-great nephews.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Frances Asbury United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs. Pastor Jim McMahan officiated. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery. Graveside military services were conducted by DeFord Masonic Lodge #88.

Virginia M. Weller

Virginia M. Weller, 77, of Hancock, MD, died Saturday, July 8, 2000 at the home of her daughter, Joyce Fields of Greencastle, PA.
Born May 17, 1923 in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin R. and Bessie Hoke Weller and the widow of Clarence W. Weller who died March 8, 1990.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Orchard Ridge First Church of God and she was a member of the Women's Ministries of Orchard Ridge.
She was caretaker and treasurer of the Orchard Ridge Cemetery for over 50 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Fields of Greencastle, Kay Clark of Hagerstown, MD and Darlene Dreyer of Mesa, AZ; one sister, Leona Fritz of Mercersburg, PA; three grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Fritz and Edna Frohnaple; and three brothers, Roy Weller, Geary Weller and John Weller.
Services will be held Friday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at the Orchard Ridge First Church of God, Orchard Ridge Road, Hancock, with the Rev. Jeff Hawbaker officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main Street, Hancock, on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

M. Lucile Collins, 85, of Inwood, died Monday, July 17, 2000 at Shenandoah Health Village Center, Charles Town.
Born January 29, 1915 in Gerrardstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry Busey and Georgia Crim Busey.
She was a lifetime member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women.
She was a member of the Winchester Gideon Auxiliary. She was associated with the Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission and was a past president of the ladies auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Howard W. Collins, at home; one son, Ronald K. Collins of Inwood; two grandchildren, Kay Lewis and Kelly Collins; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Busey of Inwood; and two half-sisters, JoAnn Harris and Janet Kave, both of Berkeley Springs.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Merle Busey.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20 at the South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood, with the Rev. George Stewart and the Rev. William C. Crowe officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery, Gerrardstown.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 19 at the funeral home.

Jerrell Dwayne "J.D." Crowder, 37, of Falling Waters, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Cearfoss, MD as a result of a traffic accident.
Born January 16, 1963, in Martinsburg, he was the son of Jerrell Wayne Crowder and Melody Eichelberger Crowder of Falling Waters.
He was employed as a truck driver by the Sealy Mattress Co., Williamsport, MD.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Hope Marie Gorman of Falling Waters; two sisters, Debra Ann Stevenson of Falling Waters and Jennifer Brown of Berkeley Springs; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy B. Crowder; two nieces; three nephews; and a number of cousins.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Timothy Jerrell Crowder.
Services are being held today, Wednesday, July 19 at 1 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Jack Ruby officiating. Interment will be in the Rosedale Cemetery.
Virginia C. Dickerhoff

Virginia Catherine Dicker-hoff, 88, of Hancock, MD, died Saturday, July 15, 2000 at an assisted living home in Berkeley Springs, WV.
Born October 14, 1911 in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Irene Waugh Stotler and the widow of Clarence Vernon Dickerhoff who died April of 1981 and whom she married March 28, 1937.
She was retired from Calburn Industries in Hancock as a seamstress and had previously been employed with Jacob Brothers in Hancock and Interwoven Mill in Berkeley Springs.
She was a Protestant.
She is survived by one son, Richard V. Dickerhoff of Mercersburg, PA; two sisters, Anna M. Dickerhoff and Jessie Breakall, both of Hancock; one brother, Vernon Stotler of Berkeley Springs; one grandson, Richard Dean Dickerhoff; one step grandson, Shane Mellott; and two step great grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Stotler and Irene Stotler; and two brothers, Harold Stotler and George Stotler.
A graveside service will be held today, Wednesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Cemetery, 14253 Exline Road, Hancock, with the Rev. George Lashley officiating.

Juliet Boudreau

Juliet "Judy" Newcomer Boudreau, 68, of Osterville, MA, died July 15, 2000 at Cape Cod (MA) Hospital.
Born in 1932, she was the daughter of the late Bob and Lib Newcomer.
She was a 1950 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School and was educated at West Virginia University at the School of Music. She also received a master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in pipe organ.
Surviving are her husband, Philip M. Boudreau; three sons, Philip Michael Boudreau and Mark H. Boudreau, both of Centerville, MA and Robert P. Boudreau of Roselle Park, NJ; one daughter, Anne M. Boudreau of Mashpee, MA; and one brother, Robert B. Newcomer of Williamsville, NY; five grandchildren, Alexandria, Brendan and Nicole Boudreau and Emma and Grace Boudreau, all of Centerville; one niece and one nephew.
She was a longtime member and officer of Our Lady of the Assumption Ladies Guild and its Altar Guild; a church organist for 35 years at Our Lady of the Assumption; and director of the adult choir and founder and director of the Children's Choir. She was the recipient of the Marian Award from the Diocese of Fall River for her service to the church.
She was an active member of the Osterville Garden Club and volunteered her gift of music and flower designing at area nursing homes. She was a past member of the Junior's Women Club. She was an accomplished cook and founded the Hot Fudge Sundae Club.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Wianno Ave., Osterville, today, Wednesday, July 19 at 10 a.m.

Hazel Delorse Henry, 87, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at her home.
Born November 12, 1912, she was the daughter of the late George Michael and Frances Michael.
She attended Waterview Grade School in Morgan County, WV.
She was a homemaker. She worked at local canning factories, was also employed by War Memorial Hospital as a cook, did domestic and other numerous occupations. She retired in 1997.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin E. Henry, Sr.; five daughters, Virginia L. Sporer of Oscala, FL, Frances J. Clark of Port St. John, FL, Judy Lerner of Dale City, VA and Charlene Bohrer and Barbara Ann Henry Clark, both of Berkeley Springs; two sons, Richard E. Henry of Port St. John, FL and Melvin E. Henry, Jr. of Huntsville, AL; one sister, Hattie Miller; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded by six brothers, Ercel, Alston, Oscar, Milton, Paul and Filmore Michael; one sister, Maggie Stotler; and one granddaughter, Heather T. Henry.

Alma Marie Hill, 73, of Needmore, PA, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000 at her home.
Born March 24, 1927, in McConnellsburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Georgia Allen Knable Truax.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Webster Mills Free Church in McConnellsburg.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Hill, whom she married December 20, 1945; two sons, Willard Carl Hill and Coy Dean Hill, both of Needmore; three sisters, Pearl Crum of Berkeley Springs, WV, and Mae Pittman and Betty Howell, both of McConnellsburg; three brothers, George Truax of Shady Grove, PA, and Clarence Truax Jr. and Harold Truax, both of McConnellsburg; three grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin Truax.
Services were held Friday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at Webster Mills Free Brethren Church in McConnellsburg. Pastors Chalmer Hann, William Garland and Roger Truax officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Needmore.

Ethel Estella Swain, 80, of Warfordsburg, PA, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, PA.
Born November 1919, in Cumberland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Russcella Hill Schriver.
She was a graduate of Warfordsburg High School.
She was formerly employed by Town Hill Hotel in Little Orleans, MD; and by Woodmont Rod and Gun Club in Hancock, MD. She worked in the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington, DC, during World War II.
She was a member of Hancock Assembly of God in Hancock.
She was survived by her husband, Vernon T. Swain, whom she married September 14, 1941; one daughter, Linda Lou Hixon of Hancock; one son, Rodney V. Swain of Acworth, GA; one sister, Mabel L. Green of Cumberland; one brother, N. Eugene Schriver of Warfordsburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Ours, Elizabeth Trail and Maxine Swain; and two brothers, Cecil Schriver and John Schriver.
Services were held Friday, July 21 at 1 p.m. at Hancock Assembly of God in Hancock. The Revs. Robert D. Smith Sr. and Charles Foshee officiated. Burial was in Buck Valley Memorial Cemetery in Warfordsburg.

Gloria J. Moore

Gloria June Moore, 61, of Berkeley Springs, formerly of Warren, OH, died on Saturday, July 22, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.
Born May 9, 1939 in Norton, she was the daughter of Olga Mae Nazelrod Rowan of Berkeley Springs and the late Kent "Bally" Rowan.
She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Spohrs Crossroads, Berkeley Springs.
She graduated from Coalton High School, Coalton.
She retired in 1992 after 32 years of service with the Palmer Accounting Firm in Warren, where she was enrolled certified public accountant agent, tax preparation accountant and office manager. She was a member of the National Society of Public Accounts.
After retiring, she moved to Berkeley Springs, and had been a homemaker in recent years.
In addition to her mother, surviving are her husband of 41 years whom she married on April 4, 1959; Delmar Moore, Sr., at home; two sons, Alan Craig Moore and Delmar Moore, Jr., both of Warren; two daughters, Colleen Southern and Julie Francis, both of Warren; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services are being conducted at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 26, at Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with Rev. Wayne Frum and Rev. Henry L. Fisher officiating.

Ralph Widmyer
1913-2000
Walter Ralph Widmyer, 87, of Berkeley Springs died Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.
Born March 9, 1913 in Ridersville, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence Vermont and Hattie Close Widmyer.
He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs, where he had been a Sunday school teacher and also served as superintendent of the Sunday school.
He attended the New Hope Elementary School and in 1930 graduated from Bath District High School, Berkeley Springs. He earned his teaching certificate from Shepherd College and began teaching at Mt. Vernon School, Bath District and later at Mt. Airy School, Allen District.
Following four years of teaching at the one room schools and at the age of 22, he became the principal of New Hope School.
After the county unit system was adopted, he moved to Mt. Wesley School where he taught the fifth grade and later became principal.
He continued as principal of the Berkeley Springs Graded School and relocated to the newly erected W. Ralph Widmyer Elementary School, built in his honor and dedicated on January 30, 1977.
He earned a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. and also attended classes at Marshall University and West Virginia University.
He retired after 47 years as an educator with the Morgan County School System in May, 1978.
He was the last living Charter Member of the Berkeley Springs Lions Club which he helped form in October, 1945. He served as president from 1947-1948 and was recognized for 54 years of perfect attendance. He was named a "Melvin Jones Fellow" and received the Leonard Jarrett West Virginia Sight Foundation Award.
He served as vice president, secretary and treasurer of the Morgan County War Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and was active, until the time of his death, in fund raising for the hospital.
He was an active volunteer with Morgan County Senior Life Services and the Meals on Wheels program. In 1977, Governor Rockefeller named him West Virginia's "Most Outstanding Humanitarian."
He was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society and served as president of the Morgan County Retired School Personnel. He was a lifetime member of the P.T.A. and continued to be active in education until May, 2000, serving as a mentor with the PASS (Providing Academic Self Esteem Support) Program.
He was a life-long farmer in Morgan County. He tended and sold Christmas trees. He especially liked the fellowship with his former students.
Surviving are his son, Warren Harris Widmyer of Orange, VA; two granddaughters, Amber Linette Widmyer of Richmond, VA and Ginger Annette Widmyer Shifflett of Fishersville, VA; one foster sister, Ardath "Peggy" Hevener of Berkeley Springs; one foster niece; and several cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ora Alverta Hawvermale Widmyer on December 28, 1991 and an infant brother.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29 at W. Ralph Widmyer Elementary School, Route 522 south, Berkeley Springs with Pastor James L. McMahan and Pastor Kelly Scott officiating. Private interment was in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Howard B. Michael
1922-2000
Howard Benton "Beanie" Michael, 78, of New Market, VA, formerly of Martinsburg, WV, died at the VA Medical Center Nursing Home on July 28, 2000.
Born in Berkeley Springs, WV, July 16, 1912, he was the son of the late Clifton B. Michael and Minnie Unger Michael.
He was a member of the Inwood United Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy CM 3rd class from 1943 to 1946.
He was a past commander and member of Alderton Dawson Post #60, Berkeley Springs American Legion. He was a past president, member and life member of the Dunn Loring, VA Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Virginia State Firefighters Association.
In 1960 he moved to the Falls Church, VA area and was a superintendent for Homer E. Henry Drywall Co. and a superintendent for the General Services Administration in the mill shop. In 1972 he moved to the Martinsburg area where he worked for the Blake Company in Halfway, MD until his retirement in 1984 and from 1984 to 1988 he worked for Lee Builders of Halfway. He worked for Martin and Seibert in maintenance until illness forced him to resign.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ellen Jane Lutman Michael; one daughter, Sandra Lee Blosser of New Market, VA; two sons, Clifton Raymond Michael of Arlington, VA and Winford Benton Michael of Haymarket, VA; four grandsons; three granddaughters; one step grandson; 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Lee Michael of Williamsport, MD; three nieces and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Douglas Michael; one sister, Pauline I. Spring; and three brothers, Willard, Vernon and Winford Michael.
Services were at the Rosedale Funeral Chapel on Monday, July 31, with the Pastor Sheryl Merki, assisted by Rev. John Wright and Rev. C. Bernard Troutman, past chaplain of the Virginia State Firefighters Association, officiating. Military graveside services were by the Tri State Honor Guard. Interment was in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
Herman J. Benner Sr.

Herman "Jack" Jackson Benner Sr., 66, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, July 29, 2000 at his home under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Born January 27, 1934, in Winchester, VA, he was the son of the late Roy H. Benner Sr. and Eva Cooper Benner.
He was a member of the Church of God.
He was the vice president of maintenance for Quality Carrier until his retirement two years ago.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict for four years and was also a member of the 167th Tactical Airlift Wing, West Virginia Air National Guard, Martinsburg for six years.
He was a member of Izaak Walton League, War Memorial Park Board.
He was the 1st Captain of the Berkeley County Police Reserve and a member of the N.R.A.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Faith Mason Benner, at home; one son, Herman Jake Benner Jr. of Gerrardstown; one daughter, Sheila Faircloth of Martinsburg; two grandchildren, Jacob Benner of Cherry Run and Jason Benner of Martinsburg, whom he helped raise; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services are being held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, August 2, at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Harold Snyder officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

Lucille Fleta Strawderman, 73, of Mathias, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center in Baker.
Born July 31, 1926 in Mathias, she was a daughter of the late Guy F. and Gladys Ketterman Dispanet.
She was a cook for Hardy County School Systems before retiring.
She was a member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren.
She was a member of the Tri County Antique Auto Club and a member of the Mathias V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 7780.
She is survived by her husband, Arnold Strawderman, whom she married July 30, 1949; one daughter, Cindy Jenkins of Berkeley Springs; five sisters, Thelma Delawder of Bergton, Alma Shipe, Joyce Strawderman and Bernice Miller, all of Mathias, and Minnie Kline of Linville; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 28, at 2 p.m. at the Mathias Church of the Brethren in Mathias, with the Rev's Greg Quintrell, Wayne Miller and Clarence McDowell officiating. Interment was in the Mathias Cemetery.

Betty L. Kerns, 81, formerly of Winchester, VA, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Health Care Facility in Charles Town.
Born May 14, 1929 in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of the late Walter G. Kerns and Laura A. Miller Kerns.
She worked for National Fruit Products Co. for more than 23 years. She also was a bus driver for Frederick County Schools and Winchester City for many years.
She was a member of First Assembly of God Church and a member of the Salvation Army.
She is survived by one sister, Retha E. Rankin of Berkeley Springs.

Vernon G. Rankin
1918-2000
Vernon G. Rankin, 81, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.
Born in Morgan County, WV on October 21, 1918, he was the son of the late Edward and Lillie Culp Rankin.
He was self employed and owned Vernon Rankin Excavating, retiring in 1983.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a member of the Sons of American Legion, Post, Berkeley Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Hollenbaugh Rankin; one daughter, Lois Jean Rankin of Bay City, TX; three sons, Herbert Wayne Rankin, Sr., Vernon G. Rankin, Jr. and Roy W. Rankin, Sr., all of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, LeEsta Anderson and Rita Lea Lutman, both of Berkeley Springs; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Rankin and James Starliper; and one granddaughter.
Services will be held Thursday, August 3, at 11 a.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Jack Hiles officiating. Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery, Berkeley Springs. Friends will be received at the funeral home today, Wednesday, August 2, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Charles E. McCarty
1926-2000
Charles E. "Chick" McCarty, 74, of Hancock, MD, died Sunday, September 3, 2000 at his home.
Born February 16, 1926 in Hancock, he was the son of the late Earl N. and Margaret Starliper McCarty.
He retired from Rayloc in Hancock, April 1, 1988.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the Carrier USS Cowpens CVL25 in the South Pacific.
He was a member of the Webster B. Harrison Post #26 American Legion and the Tonoloway Rod and Gun Club.
He was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Hancock.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrie L. Mosier McCarty of Hancock, whom he married September 18, 1973; one daughter, Rebecca E. McCarty of Hancock; four sons, Edward N. McCarty of Hancock, Charles Ray McCarty of Williamsburg, VA, Dennis W. McCarty of Dayton, OH and Richard O. McCarty of Hampton, VA; one sister, Mary Ann Mortzfeldt of Hancock; four brothers, Otho McCarty, Donald McCarty and Paul McCarty, all of Hancock and Roger McCarty of Berkeley Springs, WV; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, George McCarty and Harold McCarty, Sr.
A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, September 7 at 11 a.m. at the St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 2 East High Street, Hancock. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt, Jr. will officiate. A military service will be conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard at the church following the service.

Mazelia Elizabeth Everett, 87, of Cumberland, MD, died on Thursday, August 31, 2000 at the Egle Nursing Home in Lonaconing, MD.
Born December 12, 1912 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late John Lewis and Sallie Mae Weber Everett.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She was a 1930 graduate of Bath District High School, Berkeley Springs.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are seven nieces, six nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Boyland and five brothers, John L. Everett, Jr., Derwood Everett, Willard Everett, James Everett and Charles "Cook" Everett.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, at Friendship Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Andrew Cooney officiating.

Charles W. Roach Sr.
1931-2000
Charles William Roach, 69, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died on Friday, September 1, 2000 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.
Born August 11, 1931 in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late John Earl "Bub" and Estella Hovermale Roach.
He was a member of the Hancock Church of God, Hancock, MD.
He served in the U.S. Army for 31 years, retiring as a warrant officer on June 30, 1980. He was stationed all over the world during his military career and worked as a clerk in the military records division.
He moved back to Berkeley Springs following his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Betty A. Vanorsdale Roach, at home; one daughter, Gloria Ann Roach of Parkland, WA; two sons, Charles William Roach, Jr. and Mark Anthony Roach, both of Parkland; one step-son, David Allen Vanorsdale of Berkeley Springs; one step-granddaughter, Carrie Vanorsdale of Deer Park, MD; two sisters, Helen Craddock of Williamsburg, VA and Phyllis Tracey of Hagerstown, MD; three half-sisters, Marllee Brown of Great Cacapon, WV, Phoebe Leggett of Williamsport, MD and Irene Stendal of Hagerstown, MD; one step-sister, Mary Riley of Lock Haven, PA; two brothers, Roger Roach of Williamsport and Roy Roach of Inwood, WV; two half-brothers, Sandy Messner and Danny Messner of Hagerstown; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 4 at the Hancock Church of God, Hancock, with Pastor Eugene Harne and Pastor Matthew Smith officiating. Interment with military graveside honors was in the Orchard Ridge Church of God Cemetery, Hancock.

Nellie Catherine Spring, 92, of Great Cacapon, WV, died on Sunday, September 3, 2000 at City Hospital in Martinsburg, WV.
Born December 30, 1907 in Great Cacapon, she was the daughter of the late Theopilous and Ettie Henry Unger.
She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Great Cacapon.
She attended public schools in Great Cacapon.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Gladstone Spring of Berkeley Springs and Gene U. Spring of Great Cacapon; one daughter, Gloria D. Johnson of Inwood, WV; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Spring in 1971; one sister, Elizabeth Dawson; four brothers, Ralph Unger, Ward Unger, Hamil Unger and Roy Unger; and one grandson, Darrell Spring.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, September 6 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon, with Pastor David Duckworth officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 am. to noon today, Wednesday, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to noon.

Lloyd A. "Tim" Divelbliss, 54, of Crystal Spring, PA, died Sunday, September 3, 2000 at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, PA.
Born June 16, 1946 in Fulton County, PA, he was the son of the late Charles and Bessie Hazel Mills Lanehart.
He was a Pennsylvania State Constable and was employed with Sonny's Produce in Berkeley Springs, WV.
He attended Southern Fulton High School.
He attended The Akerville Community Church.
He is survived by three daughters, Tina Hahn of Warfordsburg, PA, Tonya Beegle of Everett, PA and Trina Fischer of Crystal Spring; one son, Ty A. Divelbliss of Warfordsburg; one foster daughter, Lucy Caple of Warfordsburg; three sisters, Golden Deneen of Warfordsburg, Patti Benfield of Bel Air, MD and Edna Staubs of Shepherdstown, WV; two brothers, Alton Lanehart and Charles Lanehart, both of Warfordsburg; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Emory Lanehart and Harry Lanehart.
Services will be held today, Wednesday, September 6 at 11 a.m. at the Cedar Grove Christian Church, Flickerville Road, Warfordsburg. The Rev. John Garner will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Anna G. Hodges

Anna Grace Hodges, 84, of Berkeley Springs, WV, died on Friday, September 8, 2000 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.
Born September 1, 1916 in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of the late C.S. Needham, Sr. and Katherine Blackburn Needham.
She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church, Knoxville where she was the first Queen crowned in the Girl's Auxiliary of Woman's Missionary Union.
She was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs.
She attended Brownlow Elementary Park Junior High and graduated from Old Knoxville High School, all in Knoxville. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Tennessee in 1938 and taught home economics at Farragut High School in Knoxville for one year following college.
She moved to Berkeley Springs in 1939 where she met and married the high school coach, Paul B. "Moose" Hodges. She taught home economics and F.H.A. at Berkeley Springs High School from 1939 until her retirement in 1979.
She was a member of Foxglove Garden Club in Berkeley Springs.
She had been a homemaker in recent years.
Surviving are three godchildren; one brother, C.S. Needham, Jr. of Knoxville; two nieces; and two grand nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul B. "Moose" Hodges and one sister, Louise Needham Taylor.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with minister Kathy Spitzer officiating. Private interment will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at the funeral home.

Forest D. Cate
1918-2000
Forest D. Cate, 82, of Lewiston, ID, died on Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
He was born March 12, 1918, the son of Earl and Cassie Olmstead Cate at Agatha, west of Lenore, ID.
He attended school in Lenore.
He served in the U.S. Army in the DC area where he met and married E. Bernadine Graham of Berkeley Springs on May 3, 1943.
They moved to Lewiston in 1948 and he worked for Potlatch Corporation as a planer operator. He retired in 1975.
His survivors include two sons, Clyde Wayne Cate of Clarkston and Larry R. Cate of Lewiston; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Myrtea LaVel Bateman of Lenore.
He was preceded in death by his wife on May 5, 1999; one sister, Velma Hagg and one brother, Delbert Cate.
Services were held on Friday, May 26 at 3 p.m. at the Mountain View Funeral Home in Lewiston.
