She was born on March 12, 1963 in Kopperston, WV a daughter of the late Ralph and Janelle Ratliff Alfrey. She is preceded in death by her parents. Those left to cherish her memories are her loving husband of six years John Maynard; a daughter Brittany Stafford of Fayetteville; a son Dale Bailey, III of Oceana; two sisters Gennece Childress and husband Rodney, and Sherry Fleury all of Southern Pines, NC; two brothers Ricky Alfrey and wife Lynn of Fairdale and Phillip Alfrey and wife Jan of Clear Fork; a special nephew Chad of Southern Pines, NC; and a host of nephews, family and friends. David Ray Shumate, 62, of Oceana, WV passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, WV. He was born on July 12, 1953 in Mullens, WV a son of the late Ray Fred and Pansy Arlene Adkins Shumate. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a sister Shirley Chancey. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 40 years Beulah Faye Oliver Shumate; a daughter Melodie (Chad) Hall of Bassett, VA; two sons David Ray (Elizabeth) Shumate, Jr. of Oceana and Chris (Amy) Cook of Shelby, NC; four grandchildren Christian Hall, Savannah Hall, Logan Shumate and Peyton Shumate; three sisters Phyllis (Chester) Osborne of Kopperston, Darlene (Don) Bailey of Key Rock, Kathy Livingston of Hope Mills, NC and Tina (Dale) Helmandollar of Oceana; two brothers Jerry (Edith) Shumate of Wytheville, VA and Billy (Kim) Shumate of Oceana; a brother-in-law Bill Chancey of Ripley and a host of other loving family and friends. Roger William Morgan, 70, of Mullensville, WV passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Welch Community Hospital, Welch, WV. He was born on August 1, 1945 in Pineville, WV a son of the late Alexander Preston and Anna Mae Blankenship Morgan. He worked in a foundry for many years. She was born on March 31, 1932 in Williamsport, KY a daughter of the late Frank and Mahala Preston Daniels. She attended the Crany Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Jerry Fraley; a son Leo Fraley; three sisters; and seven brothers. Eugene New, 78, of Brenton, WV went home to be with Jesus on Monday, December 7, 2015 at CAMC General, Charleston, WV. He was born on December 22, 1936 in McCarr, KY a son of the late Everette and Mannie New. Eugene was attended the Brenton Baptist Church for over 30 years and was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by four brothers Charley Akers, Walter Akers, Junior Akers and Payton Akers; and a sister Soffey Lee Evens. Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 54 years Ina Geraldine Vance New who was the love of his life; a daughter Ina Jean New of Brenton; a son Herbert J. Opal Cleo Breeding Stewart, 98, of Clear Fork, WV departed this world for Heaven on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, WV. She was welcomed home by her late husband, Herschel B. Stewart, who preceded her in death on May 4, 1994. Opal was born the daughter of the late Ephriam and Goldie Deskins Breeding in Iaeger on September 16, 1917. A beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Opal was a devoted wife and trusted in Jesus Christ as her personal savior. Opal shared her faith with generations, and her memory will be cherished by the countless many she touched throughout her long life. She was raised on a farm and valued the hard work of tending crops and raising livestock. Opal and Herschel raised three sons at their happy home at Cub Creek before settling in Clear Fork, where she lived until her last days. Opal shared her love of music with her sons and grandchildren, leading many to follow in Christian ministry. Opal attended Clear Fork Valley Baptist Church. She made beautiful quilts and enjoyed gardening. She was well known for growing plump strawberries, mush melons, and blueberries, which she believed were a key to long life. Opal is preceded in death by three brothers, Ephriam “Junior, ” Johnnie and Hammond Breeding, and five sisters, Rosalie Breeding, Bessie Mabe, Nina Lusk, Kathleen Barnett and Josephine Workman. Opal is survived by her three sons, Billy Charles (Nanna Mae) of Baileysville, Herschel Parker (Nicole) of Sierra Vista, AZ and Joseph (Sharon) Stewart of Clear Fork; ten grandchildren, Tony (Luann), Herschel Richard, Christophe, Allen (Dana), Russell (Candace) and Devon (Brianna Smith) Stewart, Suzanne Ketron, Tina (Richard) Lockhart, Misty (Robert) Lyons and Marsha Stewart Kennedy; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; a special caregiver Angie Cline; and a host of other loving family and friends. Kathleen Blankenship Hatfield, 79, of Coal Mountain, WV passed away on Tuesday December 15, 2015 at her home. She was born on June 23, 1936 in Coal Mountain, WV a daughter of the late Bruce and Josie Acord Blankenship. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Eugene Hatfield; a granddaughter Beth Morgan; a great granddaughter Autumn Hatfield; three sisters and five brothers. Kathleen worked for the Wyoming County Board of Education as a cook for many years at Coal Mountain and Baileysville. Survivors include two daughters Marsha (Nick) Wallace of Coal Mountain and Patty (Steve) Hopkins of Powhatan, VA; three sons Michael (Rebecca) Hatfield of Oceana, Larry (Ronda) Hatfield of Coal Mountain and Billy Hatfield of Festus, MO; two sisters-in-law Georgia Hatfield of Coal Mountain and Freda Blankenship of Oceana; 20 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and a host of other loving family and friends. Piper Keegan Walters, left this world to play with the angels in Gods playground, just before she was born on Saturday December 12, 2015 at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, WV. Joseph Albert Goodwin, 77, of Kopperston, WV entered into eternal rest on Thursday December 17, 2015 in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, WV surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was born on February 28, 1938 in Mohawk, WV a son of the late Boots Logan and Orpha Mary Noe Goodwin. Joseph is a United States Army Veteran. He retired from Ranger Fuel Inc. as an equipment operator. He was a devoted and dedicated father, grandfather, friend, hunter and race fan. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his siblings Ella Louise Goodwin, Garnell Sheppard, Garnett Lusk, Calvin Goodwin and Sidney Goodwin. Buford Ray Workman, 70, of Kopperston, WV went home to be with the Lord on Saturday December 19, 2015 at his home. Ray left the world peacefully, in his sleep. He was born on November 24, 1945 in Lorado, WV a son of the late Onnie and Virginia Crouse Workman. Ray was a disabled coal miner and a "union man". He last worked at Dehue Coal in Logan County as a roof bolter. Ray was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved people, to talk, horses and fast cars. He never got out of the habit of doing a burn out in his truck before he pulled in his driveway. Ray was a kind-hearted humble man who would do anything for his family and friends. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son Samuel Lewis Workman; two sisters Mildred Blankenship and Shirley Adams; and a brother Billy Workman. He was born on June 7, 1954 in Mullens, WV a son of Virginia Day Belcher of Oceana who lived with him and the late Ward Belcher. He was a 1972 graduate of Oceana High School.
