MADISON -- Helen M. Allen, 96, died Tuesday, July 28,
1998.
Born June 2, 1902, in Ashtabula, she was the daughter
of Henry and Mary Lampella.
A homemaker, Mrs. Allen was a resident of Madison for
the last five years.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Painesville.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Bonnes of Painesville
and Lorna Curtiss of Reno, Nev.; seven sons, Richard of Toms River, N.J.,
Jack of Houston, Texas, Frank of Painesville, John of Mareno Valley, Calif.,
Phillip of Brook Park, Toby of San Diego, Calif., and Dave Curtiss of Amarillo,
Texas; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great, great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; four
sisters; and two brothers.
Service is 11 a.m. Suturday at Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville,
with the Rev. James Zinkowich of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.
There are no calling hours.

Lester Francis BeBout
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP -- Lester Francis BeBout, 85, of Washington
Boulevard, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 21, 1913, in Berne, Ind., he was the son of
Wayne and Ada (Fetters) BeBout. He had been an Ashtabula County most of
his life.
Mr. BeBout was employed by B & B Wrecking Co., Cleveland,
for the last nine years, as a crane operator engineer. He had also worked
for several other construction firms before retiring in 1975.
He was a member of First Grace Gospel Church, Ashtabula,
and the Ashtabula Yacht Club for many years. He enjoyed flying his own
airplanes, fishing, gun collecting, motorcycles, boating and sports car
racing.
Survivors include his wife, Ella L. (Duff), whom he wed
July 23, 1945, in Wheeling, W. Va.; a son, Richard Davino of Rio Grande,
Calif.; three daughters, Janey Schultz and Jacqueline Smith of Ashtabula,
and Constance Taylor of Shalimar, Fla.; two brothers, Willard of Laguna
Hills, Calif., and Willis of Jefferson; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son,
Francis, in 1998; and a sister, Wanda Thompson.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at the Childs-Williams Funeral
Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula,
with the Rev. David Adams of First Grace Gospel Church officiating. Burial
will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Rita E. (Kline) Churchill, 71,
died Tuesday, July 28, 1998.
Born Sept. 17, 1926, in Tionesta, Pa., she was the daughter
of Floyd C. and Mary Ann (Dechant) Kline.
Mrs. Churchill was a registered nurse at University Hospital
and other hospitals in the area. She was a member of St. Ann's Church,
Cleveland Heights.
Survivors include her mother; three daughters, Kathleen
Pierson of Geneva, Christine Rose and Laura DiNardo; three sons, Joseph
P. Jr., John P., and Thomas; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
four sisters, Marge Roberts, Patricia Quinto, Geanne Thompson and Ethel
MacBeth; and three brothers, William, Donald and Elton.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at
St. Ann's Church, 2175 Coventry Road, Cleveland Heights, with the Rev.
James E. Singler officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

Charles J. Lexso
WARREN -- Charles J. Lexso, 75, died Tuesday, July 28,
1998, at Washington Square Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 22, 1922, in Madison, he was the son of Charles
F. and Clara E. Lexso.
Mr. Lexso retired in 1982 as an inspector at Copperweld
Steel Warren after 28 and half of service.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, farming, traveling, bluegrass
music, and woodworking.
Survivors include his former wife, Bella J. Liddle of
Bristolville; three sons, James of West Farmington, Joseph B. of Newton
Falls and John of Lordstown; one daughter, Jodi Lintz of Zanesville; and
14 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother,
Raymond F.; and a sister, Annie.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at the Trask Funeral Home, 275
East Main St., Route 88, West Farmington, with Kevin Longanecker of the
Church of the Brethren, Bristolville. Burial will follow at the Sager Memorial
Cemetery, Bristolville.

Royce A. Evans
GENEVA - Royce A. Evans, 91, died Sunday June 28, 1998,
at his home.
Mr. Evans was born May 3, 1907, in Rock Creek a son of
Milo and Cloie (Young) Evans.
He was a lifelong Ashtabula County resident living 50
years in Geneva. Mr. Evans worked as a copper plater for True Temper in
Geneva for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1962.
Mr. Evans married Florence Evans on June 22, 1929, in
Rock Creek. He played various musical instruments, was a life member of
the National Rifle Association, a member of the Ashtabula County Antique
Engine Club and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by three sons, Royce R. Evans of Geneva,
Kenneth "Pete" Evans of Rock Creek and Mark Evans of Geneva; two fosters
sons, Robert and Kenny Tryon, both of Geneva; two brothers, Keith of Ashtabula
and Charles of Nevada; two sisters Dorothy Hamilton of Ashtabula and Iona
Deemer of Conneaut; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and four
great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his wife, Florence;
in 1993; his parents; one grandson, Matthew Evans; two brothers, Blaine
and Shirley Evans; and two sisters, Hilda Reynolds and Audrey Gressinger.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at
Lenox Center Cemetery with the Rev. Raymond Mote officiating.

PUNTA GORDE, FLA. - Carl W. Houser, 85, died Friday, June
26, 1998, in Charlotte Hospital.
Mr. Houser was born March 16, 1913, in Bryant, Ind.,
a son of Delbert and Edith (Glentzler) Houser.
He had lived in Florida for 26 years after moving from
Warren.
Mr. Houser was a self-employed painter and interior decorator.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing golf
and taking pictures.
He married Sylvia (Fobes) Evans on Sept. 6, 1936.
Mr. Houser is survived by his wife; a son, Charles W.
of Warren; a brother, Wayne of Westminster, Calif.; a sister, Faye Miller
of Portland, Ore., and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers,
Arthur, Lewis, Clarence and Emmett and a sister, Rosa Ryan.

ORWELL - Luella M. Kelly, 95, of Crystal Ave., Ashtabula,
died Saturday June 27, 1998, at the Village Square Nursing Home in Orwell
after a long illness.
Mrs. Kelly was born March 13, 1903 in Conneaut, a daughter
of Ward J. and Nellie Brockett and has been a lifetime area resident.
Survivors include a son, Robert Kelly of Portland, Ore.;
a daughter, Barbara Drazba of Orwell; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren,
a great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Bert E. Kelly in 1964; a brother, George Brockett and a sister, Goldie
Preston.

ASHTABULA - Margaret N. Shumate, 65, of Jefferson, died
Saturday June 28, 1998, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Mrs. Shumate was born Sept. 18, 1932, in Cumberland,
KY., a daughter of Adam and Eva (Baksa) Nemeth and has resided in Jefferson
since 1957.
She married Kenneth Shumate on Dec. 5, 1953, in Jefferson.
She worked at the Jefferson Post Office as a clerk for 15 years before
retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Shumate was a past matron Sunshine Chapter 89, Order
of Eastern Star, Past Commander of Baylor Post 152, Jefferson Past County
Commander of American Legion, past 9th district commander of American Legion,
Aaerie 3881 (Eagles).
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; one son, Roger
of Hillsborough, N.C.; three daughters, Kathleen Ketron of Ashtabula, Linda
Bealer of Jefferson and Margaret E. Shumate of Northfield; one sister,
Roselyn Brown of Greenville Tenn., and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers
and two sisters.

ASHTABULA -- Lawrence Wheeler Grady, 17, of West 38th

Born May 2, 1981, in Cleveland, he was the son of Lawrence
Wheeler and Barbara (Grady) Mora and had been an Ashtabula resident for
the past five years.
A junior at Ashtabula High School, he enjoyed music, writing
rap songs, and sports, especially basketball, baseball and football. He
was active in midget league football in his younger years.
Survivors include his parents, brothers, sisters, and
grandparents.

Marguerite `Reeti' Hutchins
ASHTABULA -- Marguerite "Reeti" Hutchins, 48, of Hiram
Avenue, died Friday, June 26, 1998, after a four-year battle with multiple
myeloma.
Born July 27, 1949, in Ashtabula, she was the daughter
of Gordon W. and Marilynn (Peavey) Hill and was a lifelong area resident.
After graduating from Ashtabula High School in 1967, Mrs.
Hutchins attended Mount Union College in 1970, where she earned a degree
in education. She taught first grade at McKinsey Elementary School before
becoming an employee of the Ashtabula YMCA. She retired in 1997 because
of ill health.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula,
the OCCL and of the "Y" Masters Swim Team.
Survivors include her father; three sons, Michael, Dan
and Ryan, all of Ashtabula; a brother, the Rev. David Hill of Sunbury;
a sister, Susan White of Mobile, Ala.; and her fiance, Bob Ward of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her mother.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Clyde L. Lohrey, 79, died Friday,
May 15, 1998.
Born July 30, 1918, in Lakewood, he moved with his family
to Ashtabula in 1946 and lived in Saybrook Township until moving to southern
California in 1960.
Mr. Lohrey worked for Reliance Electric until he moved
to California.
He was a member of the Acacia Masonic Lodge No 651, Lyndhurst.
Survivors include a son, Ted C. of Oceanside, Calif.;
a daughter Judy Lohrey Howell of Las Gatos, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Viola,
next to whom he is buried at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Oceanside, Calif.

CONNEAUT -- Phyllis Adamovich, 78, of Main Street died

Born Oct. 9, 1919, in Youngstown, she was the daughter
of Joseph Serra and Rose Carson. She married John Adamovich Nov. 20, 1941.
A one-time resident of Hollywood, Fla., Mrs. Adamovich
was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Anthony Church in Youngstown and
Little Flower Catholic Church in Hollywood, Fla.
Survivors include a son, John N. of Conneaut; two grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, on June 27, 1997; a daughter, Miss Karalee; a brother, Vincent

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- Sandra Huetter Adler, 55, died
Thursday, June 18, 1998.
Born Oct. 13, 1942, in Painesville, she was the daughter
of Frank and Irma (Redetzke) Huetter. She married Edward J. Adler July
24, 1980.
A South Carolina resident since 1997, Mrs. Adler lived
previously in the Madison/Painesville area.
She graduated from Madison High School and Kent State
University, and was an English teacher at John R. Williams Junior High
School from 1964 to 1998.
An avid reader, she enjoyed traveling, spending time at
the beach and taking care of her cats.
Survivors include her husband; her mother, of Wisconsin;
and a sister, Samantha Rauth, of Painesville.
She was preceded in death by her father and her first
husband, Michael Evans.
Funeral is 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Behm Family Funeral Home,

GENEVA -- Charles A. Berly, 76, of West Street died Friday,
June 26, 1998, at his home, following a long illness.
A lifelong area resident, he was born Nov. 2, 1921, in
Austinburg, the son of Adam J. and Anna W. (Ohm) Berly.
Mr. Berly graduated from Austinburg High School. During
World War II, he served with the Merchant Marines.
Later, he worked at Reliance Electric in Ashtabula, retiring
in 1983.
He was a member of Madison's American Legion Post, and
attended Saybrook United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, traveling,
bowling and spending time with his family.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Huffman of Geneva and
John Berly of Geneva; a daughter, Dianne Gilbert of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren;
one great-grandson; and a sister, Josephine Howard of Port Clinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret
E., in 1996; a brother, Carl; and a sister, Erdine.
Funeral is 1 p.m. Monday at the Kennedy-Billman Funeral
Home, a Family Care Group affiliate, 323 S. Broadway, Geneva, with the
Rev. Joseph Platt officiating. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

He was born March 22, 1915, in Oil City, Pa., the son
of Kenneth Davison and Ialene Hodge.
He married Glyn Doris Miller June 8, 1971, in Warren.
Mr. Davison worked as a scarfer at Republic Steel Co.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during World War II.
He enjoyed walking, fishing and being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife of Chardon; a niece and caregiver,
Carol Barzak of New Castle, Pa.; a son, Robert E. of St. Petersburg, Fla.;
and a brother, Robert of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,
Walter and Leon; and a sister.
Mr. Davison will be cremated. A graveside committal service
is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Orwell North Cemetery, North Maple Street, Orwell.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Catherine Millberg, 95, of North
Granite Reef Road, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, following a bout with pneumonia.
Born Feb. 16, 1903, in Hazelton, Pa., she was the daughter
of Christopher and Ellen Bushline.

CONNEAUT -- Margaret B. Palagyi, 77, died Thursday, June
25, 1998, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 24, 1920, the daughter of Carl and Marie
(Gilulie) Burr. She married Michael Palagyi Jan. 28, 1945, in Louisiana.
A 1938 graduate of Conneaut High School, Mrs. Palagyi
later worked at Rainbow Babies Hospital in Cleveland. She then entered
Ashtabula General's School of Nursing, and earned her certification as
a registered nurse in 1943.
Employed at Brown Memorial Hospital for many years, she
also was a nurse to Conneaut's Doctor Brown for 28 years -- until he left
the area.
She loved baking, playing cards and attending church activities.
A member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, she volunteered at the St. Frances
Cabrini School library. She also enjoyed monthly dinner gatherings with
the 1943 nurses alumni organization.
Survivors include her husband; two grandchildren, Eric
and Jodie Anderson; a brother, Harry Burr of Conneaut; and a sister, Charlotte
Kelly of Lehigh, Fla.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Palagyi was preceded in death
by a son, Michael, in 1971; a sister, Helen Ritari; and a brother, Carl
"Bob" Burr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St.
Frances Cabrini Church, Conneaut, with the Rev. A. Edward Gretchko officiating.
Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut, will follow.

ASHTABULA -- Estill C. Ratliff, 84, died Thursday, June
25, 1998, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Sept. 29, 1913 in Paintsville, Ky., he was the son
of Jesse and Mildred (Spencer) Ratliff.
He was a farmer while living in Chillicothe and had worked
as a foreman for Bowdler's Fruit Farm in Ashtabula. He previously hauled
coal in Paintsville, Ky.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Etta (Slone), whom he
married Dec. 18, 1937; six daughters, Phyllis Torrance, Emma Jean Candela
and Patsy Hammond, all of Ashtabula; Barbara Rood of Geneva, Frances Flinchum
of Fairborn, and Juanita Newman of Bevinsville, Ky.; one son, Donald Ratliff
of Wittensville, Ky.; 23 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren;
one brother Lloyd Ratliff of Williamsport; and two sisters, Mary Liz Burns
of Ashtabula and Flora Noel of Waverly.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four
sisters, May Miller, Kate Tackett, Doris Stinson, and Lora Long; three
brothers William "Bud", Curt, and Joe Ratliff.
Funeral is 11 a.m. today at the Church of the Living God,
604 W. 57th St. Ashtabula. The Rev. Robert Falke will officiate. Burial
will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

PERRY -- Barbara Szaniszlo, 103, died Friday, June 26,
1998, at Inn-Madison Health Center.
Mrs. Szaniszlo was born Aug. 23, 1894, in Pany, Hungary,
the daughter of John and Katalin (Komjati) Koncz. She came to America in
1911, and married Paul Szaniszlo June 18, 1921, in Cleveland.
She had resided in Perry since 1922.
A homemaker, she belonged to the Hungarian Reformed Church
of Fairport Harbor.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha Warden of Mount Vernon;
two sons, Paul of Mentor and Ernest of Perry; two grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
in 1965; and six brothers and one sister.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hungarian Reformed Church,
601 Plum St., Fairport Harbor, with the Rev. Luois Medgyesi officiating.
Interment will be in Perry Cemetery.

Arby R. Taft
GENEVA -- Arby R. Taft, 85, of South Broadway died Friday,
June 26, 1998, at University Hospitals, Cleveland.
He was born April 24, 1913, in Adams County, Wis., the
son of Loren and Grace (Robinson) Taft. He married Alberta Stewart Nov.
1, 1942, in Pierpont.
Mr. Taft was a tool and die maker at TRW, Euclid, for
33 years. He retired in 1975.
A seven-year member of the Geneva Zoning Board, he also
was camp medic for the Civilian Conservation Camps in Montana; a member
and elder emeritus at Park Street Christian Church; and a life member of
the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club.
His hobbies included gardening.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Marjorie
Stewart of Ashtabula, Kathy Blair of Jackson, Mich. and Sue Taft of Clarksville,
Md.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first
wife, Diantha (Bates) Taft; a daughter, Patricia Wright; seven brothers,
Elmer, Clifford, Floyd, Lloyd, Joseph, Howard and Arthur "Tom"; a sister,
Lorena Case; and a granddaughter, Barbara Wright.
Memorial service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the
Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, with the Rev. Larry
Wade of Park Street Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Dorset

ERIE -- Bernice Uminski, 80, of East Ninth Street died
Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Briar Hill Health Center in Middlefield.
Born April 12, 1918, in Erie, she was the daughter of

Mrs. Uminski was employed as a private home health aide.
She enjoyed playing bingo.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Uminski of Middlefield
and Constance Bull of Venice, Fla.; and three grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Walter, in 1990; and two brothers, Peter and Henry Chrostowski.

Rutheda B. Waters
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Rutheda B. Waters, 72, died Thursday,
June 25, 1998, at Hamot Medical Center.
Born Sept. 2, 1925, in Warren, she was the daughter of
Velorus W. and Mildred E. (Hubbard) Bellows and had lived in Meadville
since 1945.
She married William V. Waters on Feb. 1, 1945, at the
Congregational Church in Jefferson.
Mrs. Waters was a secretary for 25 years at the Crawford
County Area Vocational-Tech School. Prior to that, she worked in the recorder's
office at the Ashtabula County courthouse.
She was a member of Watson Run United Church of Christ,
and served as a Sunday School teacher and Bible School helper. She also
was a life member of the Vernon Township Fire Department and a 40-year
member of the Hilltoppers Women's Club.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Susan W. Schutz
of Chino, Calif.; and four grandsons, Christopher S. Waters, Jason E. Schutz
and Devin J. and Ryan J. Naef.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant children;
and a brother, Durwood T. Bellows.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Fleming Funeral Home

MADISON - Dale Lee Cox, 38, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998,
at home.
A Madison resident since 1994, he was born Nov. 12, 1959,
in Knoxville, Tenn. He also lived in North Bloomfield for a time.
Mr. Cox married Diana Sabo Aug. 29, 1984, in Cleveland.
He and a partner owned New York-based A-One Cement Inc.
for two years.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Nichole of
Cleveland, Tonya and Grace Ann, both of Columbus and Tricia of Madison;
four sons, Jason and Clifton, both of Columbus, Richard of Madison and
Joseph of Cleveland; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann and Tammy,

He was preceded in death by his parents, Linda and Clifton

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - Harold E. Fleissner, 91, of Plymouth
Road died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at home, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 19, 1906, in Ashtabula, he was the son of George
and Stanze (Weiler) Fleissner.
He was a lifetime area resident and graduate of Ashtabula
High School's Class of 1924.
Mr. Fleissner was a mill worker for Dodge Lumber Co.
He also co-owned the Top and Body Shop in Ashtabula.
A former member of the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees,
he also was a longtime member of Plymouth United Methodist Church.
He was an avid woodworker, a Teamster, and a member of
the Oddfellows.
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Wingett), whom he married
Oct. 5, 1926; a daughter, Jean Capela of Conneaut; two granddaughters;
a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Glenn Fleissner of Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant
brother, Ernest.

ASHTABULA - Cora Mae Gardner, 79, formerly of West 14th
Street, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Carington Park Nursing Home.
Born June 24, 1919, in Saybrook Township, she was the
daughter of Ernest and Myrtle (Hazeltine) Heath.
Mrs. Gardner was a lifelong area resident and 1937 graduate
of Ashtabula High School. She was employed as a Girl Scout district director,
and later worked at Laird Lumber Co. in the Ashtabula Harbor.
She was a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church; a past
matron of Lake Erie Chapter 10, Order of Eastern Star; and a former mother
adviser and district deputy for the Rainbow Girls.
She also was a member of the Redbook Boat Club; her church
women's circle; and the Pace Club at the Chalk Box.
Her hobbies included traveling and playing bingo. She
also enjoyed being with her grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Kingston of Plymouth
Township and Joan Wolfert of Ashtabula; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death
by her husband, Chester J., in 1993; a brother, Richard Heath; and three
sisters, Mildred, Frances and Jean.

ASHTABULA - Glory Ann Hamilton, 13, of Ashtabula, died
Tuesday, June 23, 1998 in Macon, Ga. as the result of an automobile accident.
Born Sept. 23, 1984 in Cleveland, she was the daughter
of Terry and Janella (Witherspoon) Hamilton.
A home school student, she was a member of the Lighthouse
Baptist Church of Ashtabula.
Active in church activities, she participated in the
church choir and was a soloist. She was involved with the church teen group
and with the church's bus ministry.
She and her parents spent much time and resources on
missionary work.
She enjoyed playing the piano and reading books.
Survivors include her parents of Ashtabula, a brother
Daniel and sister Joy of Ashtabula, and her maternal grandmother.
She was preceded in death by a maternal grandfather and
paternal grandparents.

ARNOLDSVILLE, Ga. - James Arthur Hathaway, 71, of Owensby
Mill, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998.
Mr. Hathaway was born in Ashtabula, and had resided three

He was self-employed as a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa of Arnoldsville; two
sons, Frank Senner of Hackettstown, N.J. and Daniel Sullivan of Ft. Myers,

Gerald W. Meaney
PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - Gerald W. Meaney, 74, of Jefferson
Road died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Erie,
following a long illness.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Ashtabula, the son of Victor
C. and Benedictine (Frohnaple) Meaney. He resided in the same house all
his life.
He married Elizabeth Hassett May 6, 1950, at Mother of
Sorrows Church in Ashtabula.
Mr. Meaney was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World
War II. A lifelong dairy farmer, he also worked for the Agricultural Stabilization
Conservation Service for 30 years; and was a manager at the Production
Credit Corp. for 13 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church; Knights
of Columbus Council 4212; and a former member of the Jefferson Rotary Club
and BPOE 208.
An avid hunter, fisherman and traveler, he was a member
of the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees from 1990 to 1997.
Survivors include his wife; six children, Rebecca A.
Meaney of Dallas, Ga., Gerald W. Jr. of Plymouth Township, Michelle M.
Nosse of Jefferson, Victor M. of Harpersfield Township, Elizabeth A. Meaney

ASHTABULA - Eli M. Wiitanen, 88, died Wednesday, June

Born June 21, 1910 in Finland, he was the son of John

Mr. Wiitanen worked as a maintenance man on the Penn
Central Railroad, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World
War II. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Vienna Milner of Ashtabula,
and Helen Mackey of Fairport Harbor; and several nieces and nephews.

CONNEAUT - Andrew M. Fields, 26, of Conneaut, died Monday,
June 22, 1998, at his residence.
Born July 5, 1971, he was the son of David and Jean (Brandenberger)
Fields.
He was a 1993 graduate of Happy Hearts and was an antique
car enthusiast. He also enjoyed reading, music and family get-togethers.
He attended East Conneaut United Methodist Church and Sunday School faithfully
each week. He was also a member of the National Studebaker's Drivers Club,
and was known in all area restaurants for his order of "double fries on
one big plate."
Survivors include his parents; four sisters, Kathy Tuttle
of Dale City, Va., Laura Chapman of Walton Hill, Marideth Leonard of Westerville,
and Noelle Lydic of Columbus; and three brothers, David III of El Paso,
Texas, Christopher of Conneaut, and Bryan of Cleveland.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Rudolf
and Mary Jane Geer Brandenberger; and paternal grandparents, David and
Marguerite (Schaubhut) Fields.

Road died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at his home.

Cora Mae Gardner
ASHTABULA - Cora Mae Gardner, 79, of West 14th Street
died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at the Carrington Park Nursing Home.
Born June 24, 1919, in Saybrook Township, she was the
daughter of Ernest and Myrtle (Hazletine) Heath. She was lifetime area
resident.
A 1937 graduate of Ashtabula High School, Mrs. Gardner
was employed as a district director for the Girl Scouts and also worked
for Laird Lumber Company in the Harbor.
She was a member of the Prospect Presbyterian Church
and was a past matron of Lake Erie Chapter #10 Order of Eastern Star.
She was a former mother advisor and district deputy of
Rainbow Girls and was a member of Redbrook Boat Club, the Women's Circle
of the church, and the Pace Club at the Chalk Box.
Her hobbies included traveling, bingo and her grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Kingston of Plymouth
Township and Joan Wolfert of Ashtabula; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Chester J. Gardner, a brother, Richard Heath; and three sisters,
Mildred, Frances and Jean.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Prospect Presbyterian
Church, 1342 West Prospect, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Kevin Horrigan officiating.
Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to the
time of service Saturday at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect
Road, Ashtabula, A Family Care Group affiliate.
A Eastern Star service will be held Friday night at 8:45
p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the
Memorial Fund of the Prospect Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Ashtabula
County.

Glory A. Hamilton
MACON, Ga. - Glory A. Hamilton, 13, daughter of Terry
and Janella Hamilton, residents of Ashtabula, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998,
in Macon, Ga., the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Esmond A. Hutchinson
ASHTABULA - Esmond A. "Hutch" Hutchinson, 77, of West
35th St., died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held 10 a.m. today at the Ducro Funeral
Home, 4524 Elm Ave. Ashtabula. The Rev. Joseph Platt of Saybrook United
Methodist Church, will officate. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - Gerald W. Meaney, 74, of Jefferson
Road, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Erie,
Pa.
Service is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Calasanctius
Church, Jefferson.
Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the
Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., a Family Care Group affiliate, 49 West Jefferson

Ray Miller
MESOPOTAMIA - Ray Miller, 44, died Wednesday, June 24,
1998, after being struck by a car.
Born Jan 21, 1954, in Burton, Pastor Miller was the son
of Ervin and Emma Miller. He was a resident of Mesopotamia more than 20
years.
He was the founder and pastor of the Christ Covenant
Church in Middlefield for the last 15 years.
A 1973 graduate of Berkshire High School, Pastor Miller
was the acting regional director of the Fellowship of Christian Leaders.
He coached little league baseball and enjoyed deer hunting,
gardening and landscaping.
Besides his parents, survivors include his wife, Mary
Therese (McDougall); three daughters, Monica, Rachel, Theresa; a son, Stuart;
three brothers, Merv of Middlefield, Mahlon of Burton and Lee of Sarasota,
Fla.; and five sisters, Susie Miller and Sara Milgate, both of Sarasota,
Fla., Esther Weaver and Mary Beth Schaden, both of Middlefield and Judy
Fisher of East Claridon.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Christ Covenant Church,
16406 Kinsman Road, Middlefield, with the Pastor Ted Sandquist of the Covenant
Love Community Church in Ithica, N.Y.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday
and 10 a.m. to the time of service Saturday at the church.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Russel
Golden Rule Funeral Service, Middlefield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Envelopes
will be available at the funeral home.

Dennis A. Schlabach
PARKMAN TOWNSHIP - Dennis A. Schlabach, 65, of Patch Road
died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Geauga Hospital, Claridon.
Born Feb. 23, 1933, in Kokomo, Ind., he was the son of
Andy J. and Katie (Troyer) Schlabach.
Mr. Schlabach lived in Ohio for 60 years, coming from
Indiana. He worked at Johnson Rubber Co., Middlefield, for 35 years as
a press operator, and retired in 1993.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie (Miller), whom he
married Oct. 19, 1961; eight children, Milo at home; Andy, Crist and Roman,
all of Middlefield; Melvin of Cass City, Mich.; Harvey of Clymer, N.Y.;
Lizzie Ann Stoltzfus of West Farmington; and Mary Byler of Newago, Mich.;
15 grandchildren; and two brothers and three sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 9:30 a.m. at Mr. Schlabach's residence, 15586
Patch Road, Parkman, with Bishop Melvin M. Miller officiating. Burial will
be in Yoder Cemetery, Newcomb Road.
Calling hours are anytime at the home of Joe U. Miller
on Patch Road, east of 15586 Patch Road.
