SCANNED TEXT: A. Weber, E. Maloney, W. McCrone, M. Fermoile, P. Carmody, B. Brown, Hogan, Ir., A. Feigenbaum. DEBATING CLUB Patrick Carmody President Betty Brown Vice-President Mary Fermoile Secretary John V. Hogan, Jr. Treasurer ¦ The debating season at St. Mary's opened in October. As most of the members were new in this field, the Coach, Mr. Charles Piper, spent the first few weeks discussing the technique of debating and the fundamentals of public speaking. Gradually the club was worked up to a degree from whence extemporaneous speeches could be given on almost any subject. Finally the last stage of development was reached and the club was ready to take part in a regular debate. After each member had given a tryout speech, John V. Hogan, Jr., William McCrone, and Edward Maloney were chosen to prepare the affirmative side of the national question "RESOLVED: THAT ALL ELECTRIC UTILITIES SHOULD BE GOVERNMENTALLY OWNED AND OPERATED." At the same time, Mary Fermoile, Anne Weber, and John Doyle were selected to study the negative aspects of the issue. Early in November, Mr. George Donohue, a prominent lawyer of this city, presented a very interesting and enlightening discourse on the subject of "Wills." This was only one of the highlights of the many meetings. Space limits further narration of subsequent activities. It seems very evident that with a nucleus of Mary Fermoile, Anne Weber, John Doyle, and Edward Maloney, all highly trained in the essentials of debating, St. Mary's should present a formidable Forensic Society for the year 1937-38. 45 |
