MARY'S ATHLETIC CLUB • This year St. Mary's boasted another first-class basketball team, St. Mary's Athletic Club. This quintet, the result of "Bill" Peggs' endeavor for an organization of St. Mary's boys, was considered equally as strong as the Varsity Squad. The members were those students who could not afford the time for varsity practice, or who were not available for varsity ball. Mr. Peggs, having a penchant for organizing, corralled twelve athletes and moulded them into a well balanced, powerful squad, one to be reckoned with on the hardwood. Resplendent in satin suits, the A. C. stepped out and garnered thirty-eight victories against ten defeats. The team journeyed into Canada and trimmed Welland and Stamford Varsities twice. These quintets were considered the best in the Niagara Peninsula. St. Mary's High School Varsity of Lancaster was handed a 42-6 defeat before a packed house. The St. Thomas Five was twice defeated by a single point. The first contest was won after two overtime periods and the second annexed after one "extra duty" fray. The Club gained a fine reputation in Western New York and Ontario by these and other victories. Entered in the Falls' Muny "B" League the A. C.'s won the regular season crown only to lose out by one point in the playoffs. Trailing 17-2 at half time, they came hack to sweep the "Sauls" off their feet but only a fraction of a minute sent the boys to defeat, 23-22. Teams from the Muny "A" League were defeated as well as first-class, out-of-town opponents. Now, a word about "Bill" Peggs. Mr. Peggs is considered the "Foster-father" of athletics in Niagara Falls. As organizer of city leagues, coach and director, he placed athletics in this city on its present high plane. Holding a genuine affection for St. Mary's, "Bill" coached and fostered sports here for a number of years; and his ability is evident when we consider that nine of ten "varsity hoopsters" are products of his old A. C. and Grammar School quintets. It is with pride that the St. Mary's Athletic Club claims first call on him as leader and coach. 56 |
